One thing I absolutely love about these kinds of videos is that even if I'm not at the level to execute this, it really really increases my ability to study other people's drawings and appreciate them even more deeply. 🙌🏽
This is the first time I've heard anyone explain 'why.' I literally had this question back in college and my professor told me to just study what others do, nothing about the technique. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Mr Finch sir
David began working at top cow for Marc silvestri in 1995. By that time Jim Lee already established his own style. So yeah many were inspired by Jim. Nothing wrong with that.
I’ve been drawing in a western comic book style, mainly focusing on poster and cover art, for over 20+ years. I have never felt strong in my inking skills because I just couldn’t get a ‘professional’ look with my finished inked drawings. These videos have taught me so much in an amazingly short amount of time. Thank you so much for doing this series David, I have been a fan of your artwork for as long as I can remember. Much ❤️
In my humble opinion I think it can be better to forge your own style and not compare your work with anyone else's. Someday people will look at your art and say "That's instantly recognizable as a Light Echo and it's fantastic ".
Sure does dude! That's why I love learning from guys like David Finch; a treasure trove of experience and he damn well knows what he is doing. Thumbs up to this guy!
I've watched this video several times and it never ceases to amaze me, how effortless David is with his drawing. His skill level is really insane. Thanks to Proko and David for sharing this!
Yes I can’t wait to watch!! Been waiting for David to make a tutorial on this, and it’s nice and long. So much to learn! And on top of that my commission made an appearance at 7:10. So cool! This is the way
I’m so glad Proko is inviting David Finch he and his wife are very nice people and all artists are struggling in these crazy times! Love to Meredith , Dave and Proko from the bottom of my heart! ✨✨💕💕💕👍✨✨
All of these videos have really helped me improve in countless different ways. Without taking art classes or ever having the opportunity to do so, these videos have been huge in my journey with art. I am very appreciative of every video. Thank you!
This guy is an amazing fucking teacher. Actual comprehensive steps that break down the most intimidating aspect of that stunning style of comic book everyone wants to make. This is rare
My 6th grade art teacher (back in 1962-'63) made learning crosshatching sound like some mysterious rite of passage that we would only get to as more advanced artists. Over the years I just taught myself as I never had anyone actually teach me outright.
Decided to become a comic book artist. Wanted to be a manga artist but the diversity and realism of comics is just amazing. Here's to hoping 2021 is my year to finally push my career forward and escape the horrors of general labor. Fingers crossed 🤞
Aaah man, three decades I’ve been rendering and ink drawing, almost but never clearing the hurdle, too many times I overworked, lost consistency of form direction, and this genius nails it it one, WOW thank you so much for the knowledge ....simply and perfectly put.🙏🏻
I'm left-handed too!!! It's so nice to see another left-handed person do it instead of a right-handed person and trying to adjust it my brain. That never works out right
He is really amazing, good teacher and he didn't mind to share his technique completely ,I always struggled using this cross hatch technique, not any more, nice video
This was definitely a treat. It's nice to see how to render, especially when other processes proceed rendering, such as coloring or watercolor. I have the problem of turning everything into what looks like a lithograph. I like working in detail like Alphonso Dunn, who is a great pen and ink artist, but seeing a tasteful, succinct method of rendering is great. Knowing when less is more...
The tip on "form shadow" vs. "cast shadow" was very very helpful for me. I have been doing what you're talking about. Thank you. I think it's around 9:30 if anyone is wondering what I'm talking about.
Such great advice! The separation from form shadows and cast shadows finally made sense to me in this video, and it revealed to me different philosophies to crosshatching that I had no idea existed. Thank you David Finch and the Proko team!
I've watched so many friggin videos and couldn't get a real understanding of cross hatching....then comes Finch with this lesson and all was ok with the world
Thank you for posting, I found this instantly useable and am already happier with my drawings after implementing the hatching towards the light trick he shared here! :)
This is the first time I’ve seen something like this before and it was incredible for me to watch. I learn so much just watching him do some cross hatching at the beginning it was amazing. Thank you so much for sharing David Finch you are truly a master.!!
This video was double informative. For the information on cross hatching and because he's left handed. His wrist/arm movements feel so much more natural to me
I graduated almost 10 years ago with an Illustration degree, and have NEVER seen this technique. This is a game changer! But I don’t work in comics so maybe thats why. Thank you!
Slap!!! That sound is my hand hitting my forehead. I've been struggling with crosshatching after watching this video it finally makes more sense. Davids channel is awesome everyone check it out.
Thank you! I love D. Finch's attention to detail (like when he removed the vein). It was just so humbling and inspiring to watch. This video was very helpful.
One of the best tutorials on how to advance your cross hatching I’ve seen. It can be challenging to find advice that covers how to actually create different quality lines and what to bear in mind in relation to direction and type of line to use. Having a base of shading in place was really useful. I’m keen to develop a more representative (?figurative) style of drawing rather than totally realistic yet still keep form and shape. Thank you so much.
Loved the demo! Always thought cross hatching had to be, well, crossed! But this type of rendering to soften things up really adds to the overall look.
I think David is the best artist currently working in comics because of his versatility and ability to draw *_everything_* brilliantly and excitingly. And although they may not be connected thru any living continuity, I think his rendering style is a worthy successor to the incredible inking of Rudy Nebres. Thanks, David!
IKR, ZHC's version explaining his style was inadequate, he is a great artist but not a good teacher. So it is satisfying to learn it from someone who is both a good teacher and a good artist.

The existence of David Finch and David Fincher implies the existence of a David Finchest.
And a David Finchless.
A scale of David Finchness.
😂This comment underrated
Finding this comment just now I realize I have lived the last two years in total darkness.

At the end you can really analize it better, the techniques come together as a whole!
well said
Idk how Proko manages to top themselves every single year, 12 days of proko and lightbox always blows me away but this year is on a whol other level!
Also the production level is high on the sky!

The single greatest description of not only how, but why, on crosshatching. Bravo! Very well done!
That is what I call service to humanity with unconditional LOVE...THANKS
I come back to this video so many times, all those artist here are just incredible, I'm in awe every time I come to this channel
I'm left handed, so this video is a godsend.

It makes absolutely no difference

Finch's probably the most detail oriented comics artist on the planet and in the best way possible. Love his work!
@1:38 "If you draw a circle just like this."
Me: "Thank God. There's hope for me still."
I've come to understand that most artists can't make a perfect circle in one stroke. They just give a lot more effort making one.
Yeah ghosting is real helpful for circles amd lines
You just described the first exercise from the book Fun with a pencil by Andrew Loomis. Check that out.
@@reallyoriginalusername4574 yes it isss!! ghosting > lots of confusing lines

David is the man, everysingle advice is gold OMG.
David Finch is for sure one of my favorite artists and one of the best comic book artists ever.
Excellent. I've never studied comic art, but I noticed that the crosshatching seemed codified, and this explained it very well.
