You: start practicing drawing get good
your parents: wooh you have a gift
Lol
I'm so happy I stumbled upon your channel, you're so helpful! You're whole channel has taught me more than high school art 1, art 2, and art 3 has taught me! Thank you!!
Thanks so much! Glad I was able to help : )
I had a friend who taught high school art. She was not able to teach as the students' bad manners got in the way. The principal would not allow the students to be grouped by ability and the classes had too many students. I'm glad that you have You Tube and the internet!
honestly dude im a musician who talks about music in crazy ways and the way you talk about drawing is like the same type of way and its so crazy
Good to see that you're back!
most definitely. Thanks
I've watched a lot of your videos.. they're very good. I'm going to try
Thanks much. You definitely should
Thank you for teaching me and what kind of pens are those
CarlosJ_14 if you want to you can buy microns and not his pen
A bit closer to draw like Kentaro Miura
Am I the only one here who finds sketches are far more elegant than a fully executed portrait drawing? , sorry for my bad English, im Filipino *eats a dog*
I often feel the same way
So do I

From Spain: you are a great teacher. (I bought the book in Amazon)
thank you!!
E yo también soy español saludos desde castilla y león 😁
David M huh?
@@_david_mp he’s saying he’s Spanish too and he was greeting him
I don't know why, but I find crosshatching to be so darn complicated for me.. :(
nothing that practice can fix, yeah sounds redundant but it works
I will be doing more videos on this dont worry
I agree
Me too :c
squappa keep practicing
Just came by to say thanks. Thanks for an amazing book such as Pen and Ink Drawing: A Simple Guide. It's been a blast reading and learning. Cheers!
Great thanks

2022!
I recently wanted to learn to crosshatch, but I couldn’t figure out how. This video taught me a lot and I improved really quickly! Thank you!
Definitely Inspiring
Damn keep these lessons coming
You inspire me to become a better artist
And wanting to learn everything I can
I have to say thank you
Best video out I’d say
Alphonso, I suggest to all of my printmaking students that they should watch your videos and own your book. (pen and ink translates easily into an intaglio print.) the care you take in describing how to see and draw is amazing. any artist can benefit from your words, whatever medium they choose to work in.
Thanks so much! That means so much to me :-)
I love your enthusiasm :)
I try and sit each night and draw something or practice something. I find drawing from memory the hardest, I need more practice in cross hatching to show where the light it coming from... arggggg its hard lol
Forever a huge fan and many thanks
Rene'
Thanks so much Rene! I will continue this series on crosshatching to address some of those issues. Dont worry :-)
I LOVE your crosshatching tutorials, it's my favorite way to shade and it helps me focus when I have no idea on what to draw, I even made a design that's made with opposing crosshatches in my free time, wish i could show you though, keep up the vids man they're awesome
Thanks much! You can share it on fb
Very cool!! as allways, a great tutorial :)
thanks much
I have just purchased your book as I was so impressed by your youtube videos. I look forward to learning more about pen and ink drawing using water colour as well. Thank you for your great instructions.
thanks so much! that support means alot : )
Alphonso Dunn do you sell at bookstores like barns and Nobel.
Alfonso, I ordered your book and it put me on my way to becoming a really good pen and ink artist! I took one class locally, then worked through your workbook and it was like magic for me, turned on all the lightbulbs I needed. Thank you, great job.
I seldom leave comments on videos, only on the truly exceptional and your videos are just that. I will try to keep this short. I wanted with all my heart, as teen, to be an artist. But I had really bad ADHD. I lacked the focus and patience needed to learn. I took art in high school and was heartbroken at my lack of success. I gave up that dream and turned my creativity to many forms of crafting. I am now 63 years old and over the course of my life I have learned how to overcome much of my attention deficit. I stumbled on your videos. They are perfect for me. You explain everything so clearly while simultaneously demonstrating the principles. I am going to start drawing again. I'm saving up to buy your books (I'm on disability and my income is limited,) In the meantime I will keep watching your videos and practicing what you teach. Thank you for being so generous with your videos. You have the eye and heart of an artist combined with the soul of a teacher.
Hey awesome as usual, But I wonder how you go about the second layer of lines (straight, Diagnol) ...How you think about the orientation of the second layer, Because in your drawing sometimes its up-down from the cross contour and sometimes reverse - what the thought behind it??. Thank you
I just ordered your book. I don’t know where to start? I Love cross-hatching. Thank You for your help.
Thanks
Jerry

I always hoped you'd write a book and now I'm awaiting it's delivery with anticipation. I like the non-speeded up tutorials too. I am envious of your ability and inspired by it! Keep on keeping on!
: ) thanks so much for supporting it
Just baught the book..... yay..... looking forward to reading it and learning some more of your awesome tips

Look forward to each video and love your book. Drawing with 6 kids 9-13 years old and using your book as a reference. Now when I ask "what is your favourite medium", they all answer "pen and ink" Cheers!
yayyyyy!! thats so awesome!
Thanks a lot....you have really helped me understand how to cross hatch and what's a better way of using it with my Architecture drawings
I think many of us would like to help you via Patreon.
Hmmm will give that some thought
How do you know when to use which kind of cross hatch?
I love this! Thank you for making these and elaborating on cross hatching. I am a hand engraver and I engrave a lot of small ornamental scrollwork with chisels and shading really involves using tapered parallel lines and hatching selectively to add depth to the work. And with scroll work designs you really need to follow the contours of the growth of the plant to make it look natural and real. This helps a ton!
Thank you very much for so much shared
Extremely helpful, I'm learning how to draw and create shades and this helped a lot. I'm glad I stumbled on to your channel.🥰
What pen size you normally uses
I just love your tutorials. Thank you, Alphonso. :)
Very welcome : )
Thank you for your instructions :) very useful!
Yay! New Alphonso Dunn vid!
I set aside time to draw every day, and I know it is thanks to you that whenever I don't want to draw (probably avoiding my drapery practice) or am just brain dead I practice basic shapes and parallel lines. I'm finding that I'm improving even on my bad days! (and on my good days I work through your book, so thanks for that as well!)
verywelcome! and thanks so much for supporting it too :-)
Thank you or the video.
I've been studying alone, and many videos just show the hand drawing something, but they have no explanation, about WHY are they using this or that.
Thank you!
Tus videos son geniales, gracias por compartir tu conocimiento Alphonso Dunn
Thank you for demonstrating and teaching a simple concept of cross hatching. It was very helpful!
Very inspiring, Really appriate this video.. looking forward to see the rest of them, It gives me a kick in the butt in the right direction :) Cheers!
Lol glad they help!
Amazing video! Not only did it improve my hatching, but it hyped me up to immediately get working. Also, what pen did you use in this?
Thank you for some great drawing tips, just getting back into drawing at 57. Liked and subscribed
You are a great instructor.
And I could actually understand what your saying and what you mean. It's awesome! I'm learning so much from this. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge . 💕💞💕💕💞💞
2:22 start of the actual video
Yo, if you're still around and making content, is your book good for people who can't really even draw stick figures? My art experience ended after elementary school and then, in my 30s, I took ONE single "intro to drawing" course at a local art school. That instructor taught his way of making art, which consists of hours and hours of shading in graphite. I want to learn something faster, like pen & ink, so I can actually put my thoughts down on paper and honestly have no idea where to start. I came across this because I'm absolutely in love with Landis Blair's art and want to do something similar. Cheers!
I enjoined your video. And I have a question to you. WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE PENS YOU ARE USING.
I bought your book, start the basic, strokes,it including stippling and hatching, and hatching have 8 kinds of type, the number 5 is cross hatching
I find that sometimes my crosshatched drawings look hairy because the lines stick out and look jagged. How do I control where the lines end so they don't have jagged edges, I happens when I draw faster than my skill level... As a beginner, the energy gets ahead of my skill in depicting light and shadow. Where can we get your book?
So glad to have found your channel! I'm just beginning pen & ink drawing so this is a real win. I ordered your book yesterday and subscribed to your channel. Thank you for taking the time to help so many of us!
Hi hi. I am starting out with pen and ink. Do you have a strp by step video on a start to finish completed drawing using hatching and cross hatching?
I i will take a look at your book. Heard amaxing things about it but i lesrn better wiyh videos. If there is a compsnion video for this book it would be so great. Thanks
Thx u soooo much my guy please make more this tutorial gave me so much insight on how to shade tatts which I 6een having difficulties. On some said try cross hatch seen your video and found a plug thx please make more🙏🙏🙏🙏
I’m an very talented pen artist, I’m actually the Olympic champion at light weight, what diet should I use ?
I am a self taught artist, and have always wanted to learn the right/ professional way to cross hatch, I have watched a ton of videos and have found yours to be one of the most helpful. I seem to understand most of the basics and everything you have pointed out in this video alone, but the one thing I cannot seem to grasp is this. At 9:35min into your video, when drawing a basic rectangle, why do you draw 3 different rows of shorter verticle lines instead of one row of long verticle lines? Why break it up into 3 seperate rows instead of one consistent row? I am not questioning your method, simply just want to understand the reasoning as I have not been taught professionally. I also know this might be a daft question lol But once again within my ignorance, is cross hatching mostly a pen and ink medium? Or can it be used with pencil as well? Why or why not if so?
Thanks a lot for this video Alphonso !! Very instructive :D I thank you in advance for your upcoming videos, given what you said we can expect :-)
No worries at all :)
Thanks for your input! I appreciate this so much because I thought this was just a bunch of random lines!
If you are learning cross hatching it also helps to study the work of others. Look up two cartoonist Thomas Nast and Robert crumb. Both use tons of cross hatching.
Thank you! It's super important topic for me as a self-educated beginner artist)
How can we use crosshatching and texturing together? Or how do we can create shading on any objects with textures at all?
i'll address that soon :-)
This video is old. Any I bought your book but I have not read it and I am going to watch this first. I hope I am not going to regret it but then again thank you for making a video. G'luck
i love the bla bla bla!😂😂😂
Lol
We are currently working on crosshatching in my art course, and I was struggling to understand it. But, THIS helped me so much! So thank you 💛
Very welcome! Glad it helped
So good to use the material itself to consult it must be a great feeling of achievement, let’s buy and draw.
Really useful tips as always Alphonso. The tutorial format is really great. Keep up the good work!
Superb Tutorial
15 mins and you don't cross hatch 1 thing from start to finish. You are very articulate but focus on conveying your thoughts through the pen.
This was incredibly helpful. You got a new sub!
I always tend to hatch/cross-hatch most part of my drawing if there's even the slightest change in value. Is there any way to help with that?
please darw something as an example using cross hatching, like a still life or draw something round and show hout to use round cross hatching
found a teacher
Do your basically saying that cross hatching helps with shadowing. Correct?
if i keep watching smoothing might rub off on me.. i started drawing as a kid in the 60s.. never got any kind of good. but i kind of learnt to shade.. restarted not to ong ago. i probably got a heads up on a rank armature.. just older.. you never know you might have a 65 year old armatures that never picked i up a panicle to draw. but always wanted to. just needed a reminder like RUclips to bring up the fire for the first time or again... its still the same . wanting to draw or wanting to draw again and get better this time are almost the same.. im doing it again.. just picked up a new pen today. its looking like a good pen but nat really for art. pilot g2 .05.is not going to hurt to look around.. sakura are great but not cheep..
Great video as usual. I bought your book from Amazon and I'm so glad I did. Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much for supporting it! : )
Awesome as usual!
This is the second video I’ve come across that has helped my doodling... again what sorcery is this!?
Bout to by this man’s book
Thanks so much
so helpful and perfect teaching... planning to buy the book!
Ahh my brain is bursting with ideas of how i can use these lines.... thank you so much. and i dont like the fact that i saw this video so late.
I just bought your book and it's so amazing! This book is the kind of book I wished WAY back in my younger age about 15 years ago to have but no buddy really made at that time. Thank you very much for making this awesome book for all to enjoy!
thanks so much for supporting it! And you're very very welcome :-)

GOOD TO B BACK :) Ya well i had to because that job stole my life!!! But why did i forget to draw so fast again? WOWWW a friend wants me to draw a grim reaper holding a baby? How do I start? Can you show how u would do something cool using a references and changing the things in it you want?
