Alphonso, I suggest to all of my printmaking students that they should watch your videos and own your book. (pen and ink translates easily into an intaglio print.) the care you take in describing how to see and draw is amazing. any artist can benefit from your words, whatever medium they choose to work in.

I seldom leave comments on videos, only on the truly exceptional and your videos are just that. I will try to keep this short. I wanted with all my heart, as teen, to be an artist. But I had really bad ADHD. I lacked the focus and patience needed to learn. I took art in high school and was heartbroken at my lack of success. I gave up that dream and turned my creativity to many forms of crafting. I am now 63 years old and over the course of my life I have learned how to overcome much of my attention deficit. I stumbled on your videos. They are perfect for me. You explain everything so clearly while simultaneously demonstrating the principles. I am going to start drawing again. I'm saving up to buy your books (I'm on disability and my income is limited,) In the meantime I will keep watching your videos and practicing what you teach. Thank you for being so generous with your videos. You have the eye and heart of an artist combined with the soul of a teacher.

Hey awesome as usual, But I wonder how you go about the second layer of lines (straight, Diagnol) ...How you think about the orientation of the second layer, Because in your drawing sometimes its up-down from the cross contour and sometimes reverse - what the thought behind it??. Thank you

I love this! Thank you for making these and elaborating on cross hatching. I am a hand engraver and I engrave a lot of small ornamental scrollwork with chisels and shading really involves using tapered parallel lines and hatching selectively to add depth to the work. And with scroll work designs you really need to follow the contours of the growth of the plant to make it look natural and real. This helps a ton!

Yo, if you're still around and making content, is your book good for people who can't really even draw stick figures? My art experience ended after elementary school and then, in my 30s, I took ONE single "intro to drawing" course at a local art school. That instructor taught his way of making art, which consists of hours and hours of shading in graphite. I want to learn something faster, like pen & ink, so I can actually put my thoughts down on paper and honestly have no idea where to start. I came across this because I'm absolutely in love with Landis Blair's art and want to do something similar. Cheers!

I find that sometimes my crosshatched drawings look hairy because the lines stick out and look jagged. How do I control where the lines end so they don't have jagged edges, I happens when I draw faster than my skill level... As a beginner, the energy gets ahead of my skill in depicting light and shadow. Where can we get your book?

I am a self taught artist, and have always wanted to learn the right/ professional way to cross hatch, I have watched a ton of videos and have found yours to be one of the most helpful. I seem to understand most of the basics and everything you have pointed out in this video alone, but the one thing I cannot seem to grasp is this. At 9:35min into your video, when drawing a basic rectangle, why do you draw 3 different rows of shorter verticle lines instead of one row of long verticle lines? Why break it up into 3 seperate rows instead of one consistent row? I am not questioning your method, simply just want to understand the reasoning as I have not been taught professionally. I also know this might be a daft question lol But once again within my ignorance, is cross hatching mostly a pen and ink medium? Or can it be used with pencil as well? Why or why not if so?
