Please do more on cross hatching. I usually blend with a blending stump but it looks weird. I have not mastered shading yet but I will. Your skills are awesome.
I prefer cross-hatching as well when I draw comic art. I think it looks better. But when I do realistic portraits, I prefer smudging to get the proper tones. Different kinds of art require different techniques.
Yeah "smudging" or blending is good for getting a good realism going on a piece. But if not done correctly, you'd just get a muddy mess but for that awesome comic feel cross hatching is the way to go
@@lancelottyrell9491 I'd say practice it every once in a while. Just because it's not part of curriculum doesn't mean it cant help on certain styles/projects
Thank you for your clear and functional tutorials. I'm a traditional graphite artist and shade primarily edge to value, blending, gardations of value, etc. Your tutorials on line weight and alternative shading is helping tremendously in my more imaginative drawings. Thank you so much for your time to do these. Your art is amazing btw!!!
I’ve always been a smudger. Haven’t really experimented with crosshatching before yesterday. I decided to do the Inktober challenge with no real inking experience. I watched this with the hope of learning a little about crosshatching. I was not disappointed. Much of it is common sense, but was great to watch it in practice and listen to your common sense tips. Thanks!
If you want realism, smudging is better. If that's not vital, both represent form and lighting perfectly well, and each achieves a different aesthetic result.
Smudging would result in an uneven distribution of shade. Artists such as Andrew Loomis handle cross hatching really well in their realistic works. It has more to do with the artist's level of technique than with the technique itself.
I have never heard of cross hatching. This is fantastic! I was an art major 20 years ago and started drawing again but damn I feel like a novice now that I have seen your pictures! Please make some videos on how you draw for the novice watchers such as myself. Your basic techniques and the way you see the object you are putting on paper. I see them in shapes as I draw them before I put it down on paper.
I used to follow this tutorial back when this was uploaded but cant understand it. Good thing David finch became a consistent youtube and taught me how to actually do it
When you talk about crosshatching verses smudging or side pencil shading it is just a matter of medium. With pen you crosshatch, with pencil you can shade with one stroke instead of 10,000 lines. They both are great. The discovery is what's beautiful. You did a beautiful video because we already had a full picture of the desired effect. Very Nice!
im a 31 year old who wants to do something with his art,not ashamed to admit that alot of depth is missing in my work,i feel like you are helping me on my journey, thank you friend
Love love LOVE cross hatching!!! Adds so much to the drawing. When your trying to draw something exciting with action there's no better way 😀 love that venom drawing btw!

man,i have confess something. when i watch your videos,at same i like them and i am thankful but,i feel so bad, it isn't your fault. but your drawings are so amazing that when i look at my ''''''arts'''''' and i see the difference. it is taking my will to draw away. again,it isnt your fault.
You can make a better Venom than anyone I know, it just impresses me being the way he should be in the first place, tall heavy , lean muscle while very defined and perfectly cross hatched. I am still subbriffied and will stay that way ZHC. Thank you for your guides too, they are great to follow along with as I must practise these things, like hatch/crosshatch and doublecrosshatching. You shred ZHC!~ keep shredding please.
I mean imagine rubbing out a drawing that he likes a lot trying to show how he did the technique and accidentally messing up , makes more sense now doesn’t it
For the end of your vid, the shading technique is solely a matter of the effect you want and continuity of the piece. If the whole drawing is blended and you decide to crosshatch a spot or two, it may look out of place (and vice versa). I do think they can be used together in a single piece if 1) it compliments the piece and 2) it is distributed evenly enough that both techniques compliment each other
I'm looking forward for more useful tips. I liked and subscribed and even join your notification squad too. btw, the person on the bed is intriguing me
My biggest issue with art is patience. I wanna do it quick, and I speed over parts I find boring, esp. shading large areas, leaving hatching that doesn’t match the curve of a material and is completely out of place with the more interesting parts of the drawing. Hope this helps somebody realize they have a similar problem

Im challenging you to make high detail drawling using graded pencils (H2-B8) >:D your drawlings are cool i just think if you put more detail they will be even better
Crosshatching looks way more appealing. Looking up close at a drawing, and seeing all the intricately placed lines and pencil strokes, can stare at a drawing for a long time taking it in. On the other hand, smudging doesn't really look like a "drawing". Sure you can get some up-close photorealism, but it doesn't look like traditional art.
I prefer cross hatching it looks more cartoony. I enjoyed this tutorial and I see that you follow the same rules for cross hatching that David Finch. What's your opinion about more like Olivier Coipel's rendering style ? It have some similarities here and there but it looks completely different. I'm interested in your opinion on it ;)
H_L3M4 because you dont learn tonal values and transitions so good. With cross hatching you have to develop tones and their transitions by placing specific hatches. Smudging does that for you, its not cheating generally, but it is sort of cheating if you are trying to learn the exact way to do tonal transitions manually, which feeds into your general understanding. Its better for learning, personally i prefer smudge because i dont have the patience for cross hatching. But i do know how to do it :)
This is a great channel! Anyone who likes David Finch so much must be doing something right! I liked and sub'd. If I had any money, I'd contribute to your Patreon! (What?! No Patreon? Well, get with it and start begging!) ;) Since you seem to be talking comics, I don't know how you would "smudge"--?
