Extremely detailed, clear and useful explanation! Thank you! I am left just with one question: when you keep these directions consistent with the shape of the object, they might end up meeting with each other because of the shape itself or maybe because of the perpective that makes them converge. Lines meeting means that the area where they meet will look darker. Are there techniques to deal with this issue?
1. 6:05 Use a limited set of 2 to 4 shading directions 2. 8:15 Practice on simple 3D geometric forms 3. 14:07 Use the same technique on simple 3D shapes 4. 16:33 Applay it to shade more elaborate ink drawing
It would’ve been an interesting aid/demonstration for you to have a sheet of paper as the two dimensional front-facing object, add a shade gradient in vertical and horizontal lines, and then bend the paper itself into a tube and show it from different angles so we could see the line orientation change.
Brilliant tutorial! I have always struggled w with choosing the direction of the lines. I will use your tip to improve my pen drawings. You explain everything in the most comprehensive way. Thanks. Please do more short tutorials like this. 👍
I loved the way you demonstrated shading by putting a piece of tracing paper over a more complex drawing. That was very helpful. Sometimes it's easy to grasp a concept on a simple form but get a little lost when trying to apply it to a more challenging subject matter.
Thank goodness you’re back! I just bought both books and all I can say it AMAZING!! I’m new to pen & ink, I bought a few other books before I found yours, they do not compare. Thank you 🙏🏻💖
I just finished a pen & ink assignment at school. I wish I would have had your video to help guide me. My lines were all over the place 😂. But, it sparked my interest in continuing to use this medium and style and to practice more on my own. My birthday is coming up this month and I am putting your books on my list as must haves. Your art is beautiful!! Thank you for your tutorials.
Hey Mr. Dunn, if possible could you do more on human figure ( like layering flesh onto the mannequin ) more mannequin tutorials including animals if possible? I really think your tutorials are quite easy to learn and understand and I must say your really my inspiration ( including others who look up to you) :)
This video is wonderful, Alphonso! Well done! I recently bought a glass dip pen - it can only do hatching or stippling (unless a brush is used.. but I really only wanted to use the pen alone) - and this is just what I needed! Thank-you so much for this video!! :)
WOW!! This is SO helpful. I feel like you've given me the "magic key" I was missing. Now when I practice, I will have a good mental map to guide me, so practice can lead me to improvement (instead of frustration). THANKS SO MUCH! I have your books and am looking forward to working through them.
I am glad you made this video because I learned something new the other day that confused me even more contour hatching which I noticed those types of lines were in your book. Doing hair in ink still boggles my mind, especially really detailed dog hair.
THANK YOU! I didn't get cross hatching and deciding between infinite directions overwhelmed me. This was a great explanation and it makes so much sense!
Thank You.... 🙏🏾😔🙏🏾 This was tremendous,,,, the drawings of the hands, I get the concept now can I integrate it into my drawings,,,, it can be done, you did it.... 🙏🏾🖖🏾🙏🏾 😔🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
A lot of talking but not good examples.. I need to see better examples of shading and cross hatching.. like I hear what you’re saying.. but I’m more visual.. it’s a lot of talking. I need to see good examples.. so I can practice..
Wow! This is one of the bets contents on RUclips 😊 But sir I have a doubt so here 15.18 you stated that we could use lines and then segment them and change their angle and show curvature instead of using curved lines directly so can you show that in detail about how exactly u do that segmenting and all that stuff sir plzz at least a short😅 That would be very helpful sir😅 But thank you for the video sir I am telling em this is the best contents on RUclips 😊
Sir Randall, you cannot imagine the happiness I felt seeing your notification. You’re the reason I started doing art in a place where no art schools are available…
Thank you for sharing the video, it was the exact question going in my mind i was struggling to. However, isn't this rule would contour cross hatching technique (because basically you are using contour of the the shape (either horizontal or vertical or diagonals? So basically are you using contour cross hatching ?
Alphonso; once again, you are an amazing teacher. You help me so much by the knowledge you have of drawing, but more than that by your practical, lucidity with which you teach. You are a true master not only of your craft of drawing, but even more so with your craft of teaching. God Bless you, dar man.
This method same with pencil? Great tutorial thankyou..you are best teacher on RUclips easy to understand I am a complete newbie at drawing and have watched lots of videos to learn .
I’m a tattoo artist and I really only to like to do floral. Stems and the center of the bloom I can sort of visualize as form, but I just can’t figure leaves and pedals. They are like flat crinkly shapes. No I know they have flow out of the center and they fold and catch light. I cant get my head around it. I end up with a few lines coming out from the center of the bloom and thinking of them sort of curved and Cuped concave or convex… like a fritoes scoop chip lmao but that didn’t helps me Is there a form or concept or drawing exercise or trick I can use to finally understand how pedals and leaves work in my brain? Like how you simplified the directional shading above? Help! Thanks.
Great instruction. So in essence your lines are always coplanar and follow the form. I did notice on your hand drawing that you have some details of fingerprints/skin details. Does one apply the details after the general shading ? In pencil art one typically does shading first and the refines the details. Just curious if it’s the same approach ?
j'attends avec impatience le livre que j'ai commandé chez amazon. Avec vos vidéos j'espère arriver à bien dessiner. Dommage qu'il n'y ai pas de version française. En tout cas je regarde vos vidéos avec passion. Merci
7:30 Now the three shading lines what was used in a drawing? Should it be a horizontal and straight line, a horizontal and inclined line, or should I choose the one I want?
Very glad to hear u r going to remake some of your videos as the video quality is not satisfactory. I bought both your books, and I love them!. Excited to see the updated videos! Thank you in advance.
Thank you Alphonso for your awesome presentations! My impression , together with Part 2, is that shading with tone, however faster it is than with lines, does not render shape and orientation as palpably as the lines ...
Would love to see more 15-20 min videos from yourself. You express your thought process in a way that I greatly appreciate.
Very cool, I need to pick this up. It will calm my nerves down a little.
That one is goldust! Thank you!
Most excellent lesson Mr. Dunn !
This is wonderful advices! I will use this knowledge in my drawings. Thanks a lot! 🙏😃
Thank you for the guide! ;) Your audio is very low, though?

I will address this in the next video where we actually practice this. Let me know if you have any questions after or if I didnt clear it up
@@alphonsodunn Oh really? Wonderful!😊 and thank you again!
can we get a demo of this on a still image...?
where to use the horizontal and or the vertical?
1. 6:05 Use a limited set of 2 to 4 shading directions
2. 8:15 Practice on simple 3D geometric forms
3. 14:07 Use the same technique on simple 3D shapes

Shading is my strongest opponent currently. Thanks for this, Alphonso!
So glad to have you back...
🙂
I was 108 and the 18th like! Just sayin..

Nice idea
This almost looks like math graphs

The Man is back! We missed you!
Missed making content for you all 🙂
Ive had your books for ages. Its so good to have you back doing tutorials. I really found your teaching style works for me.
I loved the way you demonstrated shading by putting a piece of tracing paper over a more complex drawing. That was very helpful. Sometimes it's easy to grasp a concept on a simple form but get a little lost when trying to apply it to a more challenging subject matter.
I'm in the process of getting a better understanding forms so that I can tackle Human anatomy. This helped so much! Thank you!
Watch his anatomy videos and practice gesture drawing often. Use lots of references
Thank goodness you’re back! I just bought both books and all I can say it AMAZING!! I’m new to pen & ink, I bought a few other books before I found yours, they do not compare. Thank you 🙏🏻💖
The best unintentional asmr

Totally, the way he shows his process...its the reason I got back into art!
"Drawing is just an excuse to crosshatch". - R.Crumb :)

Alphonso, your choices of language and structure throughout videos are S-TIER amongst the tutorial world. Great stuff.
What about foreshortening? Do you use perspective lines?
I really appreciate your teaching gift. Thank you for being on You Tube!
You have an amazing way of teaching. Thanks a bunch because of you my art improves a lot! I appreciate you a lot
I hope someday people ask me if I had a mentor when I started drawing and I will be so glad to talk about you to them
In other words, follow the form. Don’t get it? Look at comic art.

ABSOLUTELY!!! 😍🤩😇
great video thank you so much
Thank you for this. I've brought your books early in the year but didn't start it yet. I need to get started on it.
Ello from the Philippines! Until now i'm having trouble when shading may it be in pencil or ink.
Please remake your old videos , it’s a very good idea
So glad to have find you!!!
I think this video just changed my life
I am glad you made this video because I learned something new the other day that confused me even more contour hatching which I noticed those types of lines were in your book. Doing hair in ink still boggles my mind, especially really detailed dog hair.
This concept was so helpful thank you very much
Outstanding video! It would be cool to encourage people to practice by ending the video with some blank shapes that we need to shade!
Esse vídeo me deu uns insights sobre umas dúvidas que eu tinha há um bom tempo... Obrigado!
THANK YOU! I didn't get cross hatching and deciding between infinite directions overwhelmed me. This was a great explanation and it makes so much sense!
Clear and super helpful, as always. Thanks, Alphonso.
Thank You.... 🙏🏾😔🙏🏾
This was tremendous,,,, the drawings of the hands, I get the concept now can I integrate it into my drawings,,,, it can be done, you did it....
🙏🏾🖖🏾🙏🏾 😔🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
So simple, but extremly helpfull! This really shows the simplicity - and that you dont have to get intimitated!
Awesome. Been waiting for this since I'm always confused about the direction. Thank you!
A lot of talking but not good examples.. I need to see better examples of shading and cross hatching.. like I hear what you’re saying.. but I’m more visual.. it’s a lot of talking. I need to see good examples.. so I can practice..
This is very enlightening... thank you for demystifying the principle of crosshatching.
you're out here just EXPERIENCING the Cartesian plane

Thank you. I'm watching this to improve my linoleum carving. I'll practice.
Awesome video, thanks man. Explained it perfectly for me as a beginner in hatching!
Yes, I was practicing this last night but I was struggling. Thx 😀
Thank you, Alphonso, for the clear and lucid explanation. Have a great week.
Excellent lessons! Tyvm mr. Dunn! Helps allot! Cheers from Romania :)

I've been inking for years and never had it demonstrated better. You taught me something today... thanks 😊
Would recommend using a fountain pen for ink drawing because you can get various thicknesses if you use it right
Thank you! Thank you!
Still watching the video,, thanks for your tutorial,, keep writing
my brain: bring out them dip pens and the ink bottle RIGHT NOW
This is what i need
Thank you so much and super happy that you’re back! 🌈

One of the best videos I've ever stumbled upon....thanku alphose
Thank you for an awesome video! I've been looking for this 😁
You're a good teacher bro. I didn't think about the diagonal warping. 😅
hey like why not drawsome meme figures or shrek perhaps batteling rick astley
Thank you so much for this video. Help me a lot in my drawings!
I like how you tell the beginners to limit themselves to 3 directions and then proceed to use unlimited directions anyway lol.
Really informative, I will buy your book!
Thank you so much sir. Really appreciated.
These little nuggets are SO good. Simple concepts that can be endlessly applied. Please keep them coming! PS love your books!
Very glad to hear u r going to remake some of your videos as the video quality is not satisfactory. I bought both your books, and I love them!. Excited to see the updated videos! Thank you in advance.
This is so helpful - thank you!
Priceless information. Thank you
I just rub the ink when using a ball point pen to create dark spots.
From your voice you look tired, I hope you are fine ❤️
i will be purchasing your books, thank you
Oh wow so good to see you again You ok? Cant wait to see some more of your excellent videos
You have given us an Excellent explanation! 😮
Thank you you art is amazingly beautiful
This was so helpful. Thank you a hundred times.
Thank you, I understand shading much better now.
Very helpful tips for beginners 👌😀💚
Thank you ❤️
horizontal and vertical could translate to across and along the shape's axes
As a beginner I had an "AHA!" moment with this video!
This simplifies very much! Thank you
mds esse cara é muito bom, até eu q sou bem lerdinha entendi perfeitamente
Yay! I have been waiting for this video!
Thank you Alphonso for your awesome presentations! My impression , together with Part 2, is that shading with tone, however faster it is than with lines, does not render shape and orientation as palpably as the lines ...
Agreed
You’re a really great teacher! Thank you
