  • My first advice to any aspiring artist is to get proficient at gesture drawing. Once you have a figure mannequin worked out, you need to play with it, and learn how it moves. Gestures are the fastest and best way to do that.

    Thanks, David. I'm so glad I found this channel. Your figures look like Bridgeman's "wedging" construction. I'm a big fan of teaching with Bridgeman & Loomis, but especially Bridgeman bc I feel like the act of merely copying it is effective. If we get an artist who is weak on gesture or construction I make them copy Bridgeman 3x. It never fails to yield improvement. I think it's how he puts the figure in a box & makes u imagine it as lego type blocks & columns

    Excellent information here and thank you for sharing. I like how you stressed the importance of drawing hands and creating a visual library just based on them, the idea that referencing everything is not efficient, and that sourcing from various artists is the thing to absolutely take advantage of in the times with the overloads of online information.

    I love David Finch. He bought his Gnomon courses long time ago. Even in this course he did say that reference is a bit of a waste. Listened to him and got stuck. (This video might be an extract from the Gnomon Video)
    While he said "Reference is tedious", he also said to go out and look at people, to look at comic books. For drawing in the environment he did say to check comics, magazine and life.
    One way or another, you need to build your image bank in your head to be able to draw poses on command like he does and reference is the way go to. Now reference can be from the web, go sit in a café, comics, magazine, from life drawing classes, etc.
    He worked for a long time in the industry and this is why he can just draw from imagination like this.
    Maybe discrediting reference is okay for a pro artist like he is, but for a beginner, use life, use comics, use reference. Build your Visual Library.

    • @luke_Citino
      @luke_Citino 3 года назад +3

      It depends on the art style, concept artists for example use a lot of reference and textures to create their artwork.

    • @averagetrailertrash
      @averagetrailertrash Год назад

      It really depends on your goals. You don't suddenly gain the ability to draw from your head after only practicing from reference, so if your end goal is to do dynamic stuff from imagination, you need to primarily practice from imagination. Of course, you still need knowledge of reality. You still have to take the time to study each new thing (whether by observational drawing or looking at an anatomy book etc), incorporate that thing into your regular imaginative practice to cement it, rinse & repeat. I think that's what he was trying to communicate. Practicing only observational drawing teaches you to think and see in 2D, which has its benefits but is not the core skill needed when making things up on the fly.

    I took your suggestion about looking around at people for reference. Last time I was in McDonalds I just looked around at people and studied their posture and the way the light and shadow informed their poses. I stayed for a good three hours and even used my phone to take a ton of photos so I could really study them at home and get in some good practice. It was great! I've got heaps of excellent reference and it will keep me busy for many, many hours. Unfortunately, I'm not longer allowed to go to McDonalds.🤣 Seriously though, thanks Dave; another great tutorial with practical and helpful tips. Much appreciated mate.

      @@FarikoGalaxy looking at artists you look up to and trying to replicate their work to learn from their techniques is the ultimately fastest way to improve in my opinion. watching how the pros do it before doing it yourself is such a great method of learning that some people overlook because they think it's "cheating". i legit learned anatomy by doing nothing but watching Jim Lee's streams and looking at Yusuke Murata's hyper realistic bodies, and also managed to learn lineweight and crosshatching by looking at Kishimoto's manga panels, all by myself. I am a literal monkey in a human body, so if I can do it, you can probably do it twice.
      Stay strong my man, art is something that takes time and patience to learn. There's a reason for why people like Kim Jung Gi took 30+ years to get where they are right now - they didn't just come out of the womb knowing how to do perfect 5-point perspective, they had to learn it.

    I'm so glad . You are doing these new tutorials. I learned from your gnomon videos so much :D . I'm curious on how you storyboard a comic page. If you're planning to tackle the subject of comic, this would be great :)
