This video is great. I have been doodling my whole life but for the last few weeks every day I've spent a few hours focusing on videos to improve, this is a channel that has helped a lot thank you.
The head length measurement. Is one part of life drawing I learned. I would go about the same way in life drawing classes when I drew of a real life model.
This was my favorite method to do quick sketch about 4 years ago, before life got in the way and I stopped creating art, I started drawing and painting again and needed a refresher on the Reilly method, hands down you have done the best job reminding me the correct way to do it. Thank you.
Excellent video. I struggle a lot when it comes to drawing figures particularly around the hip area - really nice to see an in-depth reilly method video for figures.
I don't normally comment on things, I'm quiet. However. I really feel the need to express how helpful this is for me. Thank you so so so so so so much for taking the time to make this and putting it up for free!!!! Your commentary and explaination while calculating the figure is exactly what I've been looking for and struggling to find. I'll look into this method more, it fits me much better than Bridgman (no offense to his fans of course). You are amazing and I love you!!!! :)
Man, this video really unlocked some things i've been searching for but didn't know what to call it. The line rhythm using landmarks helps a lot! My art teachers never talked about any of this
Sorry Thor but your brother's 'how to' videos are so good i have to watch it over and over again (but seriously this is very informative, just keep doing what you are doing)
That was great to follow. Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Your flub with the construction lines in the leg was funny to me because after all these years after learning that same thing same in multiple classes, I still can't remember the orientation. Take care.
Hi Brad. Nice to meet you. I was pleasantly surprised to see how you work. You are absolutely GREAT! I draw for a simple passion but I am learning small, big things about how to approach a portrait or more commonly a face. This is thanks to you. I am truly grateful to you for the great videos you share, as well as your experience. I don't speak English very well and I apologize, but I believe that in this kind of thing, as in many others, it is not necessary to know the language but the approach that an artist like you is able to convey even to the layman. Thank you so much. P. S. I bought Loomis's book and, I'm sure, I will benefit from it. My goal is to make portraits of all my wonderful family. Sorry if I disturbed. Thank you again. A fraternal hug.
This is so helpful. It really has made my life so much easier. I need loads of practice but it's great I have this base. Thank you so much for sharing these. Don't stop! I lived in San Diego for three years and I was living in Carlsbad right next to Encinitas. I wish I knew Watts existed back then I would of gone religiously!
Brother saludos desde Venezuela, hermano ese manera que usted tiene de dibujar es todo un fenómeno he aprendido mucho de usted, gracias por su paciencia y la manera de dar a entender los trazos al dibujar.
OK so I've been struggling with little things here and there regarding my female characters proportions. I just sat down and followed through it drawing along with you. Thank you SO much for actually taking your time so beginners can follow with you! I've seen quite a lot of tutorials on figure drawing and this is the best one IMHO for people who don't necessarily want to do pure lifestyle posed stuff. For me, as an indie comic artist, this method will be much more helpful because I can quickly establish my pauses and indicate all of my anatomy, then use another page on top (using semi-transparent vellum paper for sketching or a light box) or a new layer for digital and add the final contour, forms, clothes, accessories and face to make up my character. Amazing technique!
I always learn something watching your videos. I just stumbled upon them one day and subscribed immediately. Please keep them coming. And no edit downs
This tutorial was so helpful! Can you please do a video on male figures with this method too? I really wanna learn figure drawing, thanks for these 1 hour long videos again!!
This is very helpful. Thank you so much. I was just starting to get into figure drawing too. Also, can you please make some more videos on head lay-ins and take them up to 2 value stage? And focus more on teaching how to map the shadows, please? I am currently following jeff watts videos and I don't understand 70 % on how he is mapping the shadows. So can you please do a tutorial on that one?
Great idea! Thank you! Jeff is super fast and probably the best draftsman on earth lol. I had the same issue and I think it’s because my anatomy knowledge is far less than his. He has built up such a vast store of anatomy knowledge that he can fly through the mapping process hitting all the muscle insertion points, bone prominences and muscle shapes. I’m much much slower lol but I will try my best to explain what I’m doing when mapping in shadows next time. Thanks again for checking out the video! I really appreciate it!
I suppose i have nothing new to add here other than i concur with all the best comments! I think i have drawn through all of your videos with the exception of your pops and Jimi Hendrix
every artist I listened says acromion wrong, there are two structures with similar names, one is acromion and the other is coracoid process. Acromion comes from the spine of scapula, on the lateral end. Coracoid process comes from the ventral part (frontal) and placed more medially.
Bit late commenting, but I've been coming to this video for weeks now, it's the most helpful body construction method I've found and you demonstrated it really well, thanks
Thank you for the demonstration. I only just heard about the Reilly Rhythms, and it's been rather enlightening. When it comes to pose, it fleshes out stuff I had been doing with what I call "power lines" (which ground and power a figure; I love studying a dancer for that). I hope you allow a couple of suggestions on my part. 33:00 the stiffer pose is due to 3 things: an oversized right-hand hip (it should basically fade behind the belly curve), an underextended left (right-hand for us) leg, and a stiff weight-bearing (left-hand for us) leg. Here comes my "power lines" concept: if you look at the extended leg in the ref, its direction extends up to the right (left-hand) shoulder from the tip of the toes, in a straight line across her navel or so. So if you draw such a line from the furthest point of the shoulder (not the acromion, but at the meeting of the outlines of the shoulder line and the arm line) across her navel and to the ground, the right-hand foot will land farther apart from the center of the body. This should restore part of the dynamism, but it's not complete if the weight-bearing leg looks stiff. If you struggle with the feet, it's partly because you treat them as "other objects pasted onto the form", instead of a continuity of the form. In this case, the feet are a continuity of the calf, so if you find the calf lines that extend into the feet, you'll be able to reconstruct nice, integrated feet. For both feet, I see an S-line sweeping from the back of the knee (along the calf muscle) onto the front of the ankle, curving down the forefoot to land at the toe articulation. S-lines following this path can be drawn twice on each leg, wrapping inside-out and outside in, criss-crossing at the ankle, and landing to form the forefeet. Then toes and heels can be added, again in the continuity of "power lines" if possible. The weight-bearing (left-hand) leg has that strong S-line we drew from her right-hand shoulder, which should inform where her heel (foot or shoe? I suggest foot, then draw the shoe heel landing straight down under it) lands. For the toes, I'd follow one of the three C-curves that converge to the end of her big toe : knee-toe, popliteus-calf-toe, waist-buttock-(across the air)-calf-toe. You should have no issue forming an elegant foot from there. :) The other foot can be a bit trickier, but if you drew the forefoot as I described before (curving down from the calf), then you can simply add another small S-line that goes from the ankle, behind the heel, under it, passing under the foot to re-emerge as the outside toes. In the end it's about applying "rhythms", big continuous lines, down to the details. I hope this helped (and didn't come across as obnoxious, which...is often my experience ^^)
A very helpful video, thank you! But you might want to clean up your audio a little. Its not hard to do, but makes a huge difference for those of us using high quality headsets. You'll help even more people then :)
