I’m trying to get back into drawing after not doing it for years. Instead of just grabbing a pad & trying to draw, I’m looking to build up better fundamentals than I did years ago. This was really helpful!

I agree! Thank you for the great informative video, and, with no music. By the way you don't have to shave your hands, natural is good. You're an artist!!
I have learnt so much more through this video than I have in years, you have no idea how much I struggled all these years with my muddy shading now I feel like anything is possible and that life is worth living. So so grateful, thank you 🌻
I saw this exact tutorial like approximately few months ago and I just cant thank you enough, I am an artist in digital for around 4-5 years (2024 will mark my 5th year) and this exact shading tutorial just altered my art COMPLETELY. Really I cant, I watched so many tutorials for so many years and this simple 40min shading guide just covering all of that I learned on previously, this tutorial is truthly lifechanging and every, EVERY artist that I will come across in future, Ill send them this if either they struggle with shading or in general need help with art. Its mind boggling how you share this knowlege for free and Im VERY thankfull for that Brent, you are a hero.
I have made a really good progress regarding proportions, shapes, outlines, but when it comes to shading I’m always lost, I’m learning how to tattoo and I know the shading is key to stand out, this is the first time I actually understood how to make a plan and how to develop it. I’m going to try it out in my own drawings. Thank you so much
The way you explain the process is so good. I usually get easily distracted when watching videos like this. But I can't look away from the video. And it's so much easier to understand. Thanks for this
I have had this explained to me time and time again and have never really been able to put all the pieces together. Your 5 step process makes perfect sense to me! Thank you, sir
This is the first time I really sat down to take notes from an art video, I knew something was lacking in my comprehension of shading and light, but I couldn't put my finger on it. The process you've laid out is straightforward and filled in the blanks I had, many thanks!
I've watched more than 150 videos about drawing (some of which I watched more than 3 times) on RUclips and found THIS is by far the best lecture with demonstrations about the Values and how to apply them in a very organized way. Now I have acquired a very systematic knowledge of completing a drawing successfully. I really thank you for these videos explaining Shading, in series.
i usually never fully watch any art teaching video, but you explained everything so well and easily (english is not my first language) that i kept looking at your shading process in awe. thank you for making this video

For me all of his courses are worth it. I love how clear he teaches every topic and lesson. Reason why i still keep my skillshare subscription until now. In my own opinion, his art and science of drawing series are gold mine. I always go back to his courses whenever i feel lost in my drawing skills.
This is a well structured video. Sometimes I become overwhelmed with the wealth of information about drawing that I'm not sure where to start. Thanks for providing a basic template for shading to work on and providing much direction as a free resource. I subscribed to your mailing list. I am working a tiring 9-5 and drawing is what lights a fire in me so this guidance is invaluable.
I‘m still very much a newbie, couldn’t for the life of me understand shading as it should be, until just now as you have shown and explained, so well, that I have finally comprehended it, now I just have to put it to practice. Thank you so much! You have a calm voice, have taken your time and easily explained it. A very worthy Tutorial! Very much appreciated!
A fascinating and immensely helpful technique for drawing shadows. Your method helps students get right in there. So many are put off by the long structured courses that emphasise stuff like understanding light, form, and anatomy, as well as a meticulous approach to observation and rendering. All necessary stuff eventually but this allows them to dive right in and still produce good results and hopefully get addicted to art.
Brent is so clear and descriptive when instructing. I'm looking forward to his new book, coming next month. Thank you, Brent, for sharing your love of art and your wonderful knowledge on the subject..
This is very good. I am taking it forward from the very basic technique I learned from TV modules by an artist called Jon Gnagy, must be over 60 years ago when I was in grade school. That understanding still holds good, but this is far more developed. I always thought I would go back to this when I finally retired from a lifetime of work, and here is all this great instruction on the internet I could never have anticipated, just waiting for me. It is a great pleasure and satisfaction to round out this interest that got lost somewhere in childhood. The kid had some little bit of talent, which is still in there, and now lots of time to play and satisfy the urge to create. Many thanks!
Thank you for showing how you can move from the sphere to a next step. I've been stuck on shapes unsure of how to take that and put into other objects. I saw it, but this demonstration helped it click.
Gratitude for this amazing lesson. You took an amazingly complex subject and formulated a clear and concise approach that no one in any art school i attended has ever done.. thank you kindly
As an artist, I use various mediums but haven't done much with pencil. am anxious to try it. The instructor explains the process very well. Thanks so much!
From one teacher to another, you are a damn great teacher. The step by step approach and explanations will help me draw better, but also help me to improve as teacher. Keep posting. From the French Caribbean
I took incredible value from this video! I would love it if you did a version of the shading process but for charcoal. I can have a lot of control using pencil but I'm struggling with charcoal so much.
Best free drawing lesson on youtube, greatly appreciated... On the brown paper, have you tried using a slightly lighter brown pencil for the light and then the white only for the highlights? Might look like a brown sculpture with your shading prowess
I'm glad I came across this video. For me, this is the best breakdown of shading. I haven't applied it to my drawings yet (I will later today), but you made me understand shading more than others I came across on RUclips.

Your approach reminds me quite a bit of the cartoons Michaelangelo would make before he would proceed with a painting or sculpture. Particularly the Madonna with Child and the Piéta.
