I’m trying to get back into drawing after not doing it for years. Instead of just grabbing a pad & trying to draw, I’m looking to build up better fundamentals than I did years ago. This was really helpful!

I've watched more than 150 videos about drawing (some of which I watched more than 3 times) on RUclips
and found THIS is by far the best lecture with demonstrations about the Values and how to apply them
in a very organized way. Now I have acquired a very systematic knowledge of completing a drawing successfully.
I really thank you for these videos explaining Shading, in series.

I have made a really good progress regarding proportions, shapes, outlines, but when it comes to shading I’m always lost, I’m learning how to tattoo and I know the shading is key to stand out, this is the first time I actually understood how to make a plan and how to develop it. I’m going to try it out in my own drawings. Thank you so much

This is very good. I am taking it forward from the very basic technique I learned from TV modules by an artist called Jon Gnagy, must be over 60 years ago when I was in grade school. That understanding still holds good, but this is far more developed. I always thought I would go back to this when I finally retired from a lifetime of work, and here is all this great instruction on the internet I could never have anticipated, just waiting for me. It is a great pleasure and satisfaction to round out this interest that got lost somewhere in childhood. The kid had some little bit of talent, which is still in there, and now lots of time to play and satisfy the urge to create. Many thanks!

A fascinating and immensely helpful technique for drawing shadows. Your method helps students get right in there. So many are put off by the long structured courses that emphasise stuff like understanding light, form, and anatomy, as well as a meticulous approach to observation and rendering. All necessary stuff eventually but this allows them to dive right in and still produce good results and hopefully get addicted to art.

If you happen to read this comment, I'd love if you could clarify any further on the placement of the reflected light vs. cast shadow under the armpit. I would have expected the reflected diffuse light from yhe ground to light up the cast shadow under the armpit if it tis lighting up the area just next to it.
Undoubtedly your choice of putting a cast shadow there helps communicate the overall values in the drawing- but is this more of an occlusion shadow?

Loved how you explained the steps and different values. If I do a complex still life, would I apply these 5 steps to every object in the still life?

I might be missing something, but a lot of great artist I like draw with no terminator shadow or a very subtle one. And Im sure they are very professional. May be there are some situations where it can be dropped or is it a style choice?

Your shading is absolutely stunning. The tutorial is cohesive and accurate. However, can you share what types of pencils do you use? Is it graphite, charcoal or …? 🥲🥲🥲

this is a very useful tutorial with a clear explanation of the fundamental shading basics
but for me it's kinda feel like that "how to draw an owl" meme
i understand that all that happened in "step 5" was just a refinement, and yet i feel that a speed paint with some commentaries would help a lot more than a fading transition
(ps and sorry if it sounds like gibberish. english is not my native language)

After watching so many videos from last 5 years this is the right one what I was looking for. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I would like to know which pencil you have used to creat so many details in lighter part of the body? If it is the paper then how did you create the difference?
