You're a great artist but an even better teacher.
I've been learning to draw recently as someone with no prior experience so I've been watching lots of tutorials and the way you're able to so CLEARLY and confidently communicate concepts is astounding. I almost feel like im being tricked, like...how are you able to explain it so clearly when most of the videos i watch have instructors 'doing' but floundering to properly explain the 'why'

Thank you so much for doing this video!! 🙏🏼
For two years I’ve searched high and low for a guide to shading that was simple and clear. Every single day I searched and experimented with my drawings. I was just so confused on how to apply shading to my art. Just today, I felt so defeated, and for the first time, considered giving up completely.
A few hours later and your video popped up on my homepage, and I’m so glad I clicked it. You’ve solved my biggest art problem!! 🎉🎉😂
    Thanks!
I FINALLY understand how to apply shading to my drawings!
Thank you, you’re helping so many aspiring artists.

This is a very professional demonstration and a great shading system. Thank you from Australia! One question, I struggle with the core shadow. For instance, it is very clear on the foot drawing example in this video where the core shadow needs to be. However, do all shadows (that are not a cast shadow) have a core shadow and a reflected light component? I struggle to identify which shadows need a core shadow and which don't (some non-cast shadows appear to be mostly black with no reflected light). Hope that makes sense.

I got your course on shading on Udemy Brent and I won't say that I've finished it, because I'm hopeless and super busy, but it quickly changed the way I understood shade, and ever since I've completely changed the way I approach shading in my comic, and after all the years I've spent drawing I'm now doing shading how I always thought it should be. So thanks for making it easy to understand!

How do you pick the right values on a colour wheel?
Let's say I want to paint imaginary blue cube, I pick any blue for the mid tone but then how much should the value change for other shades ? To be realistic E.g 20% on saturation in HSV colour model ? Do I change saturation or value or both in HSV? What in the rule of thumb here ?

What about local value ? The intensity of light or how far & close an object is to a light source ?

I used to do shading like it was a highlight. Like a spot of dark like how lighting can be a spot of light. I'd just never taken the time to understand shade is a region cast by the object or surface in front of the light source. I mean, of course I KNOW that's what it is, I know what shadows are, but I'd just never taken the time to ... interpret... how to translate that to my comic art.

So is it best to use a colour or B&W source photo to do a value scale for sketching on toned paper. I assume you are looking at gradations of tone to match to the scale. Do you look at a photo and decide thats a highlight or thats a core shadow or thats reflected light for example, and then create comparably toned value for each swatch? Sort of reverse engineer the source photo as it were? Or do you say this toned paper represents the mid tone and then using the coloured pencils you have to hand or the soft or hard charcoal maybe you create suitably spaced graduations and then match that when sketching from the photo. Im just not sure which way around the process happens.

When I use the writing grip to shade the darkest value, the pencil is likely to break, but the marks on the paper are more noticeable. They look like scratch marks. How do I avoid that?
