    The suggestion to practice basic shapes is so simple but practical.

  • @holamissmusica
    @holamissmusica Год назад +196

    The questions:
    1. What's the biggest shape (of the subject matter)?
    2. What is its axis?
    3. How big should it be?
    4. Where on the page should it (the subject matter) go?
    5. What changes should I make?

    I've been drawing this way for years, but whenever someone asks me "can you teach me how to draw", I've never been able to articulate it because I just go on "instinct" and experience. You are the first person that has been able to articulate this process for me so I can help others, thank you so much.

      Well, u can so not teach anyone how to draw in the first place to begin with. Teaching drawing is like teaching someone how to ride a bicycle. That u can not teach neither. U can show it, u can give tips n tricks on how to do it, u can say do this and that, coordinate this and that, dot it all together at the same time then, but end of the day the person must teach himself how to ride a bicycle. quoted from Betty Edwards book Drawing on the right side of the brain...

      I also saw the analogy with drawing and the development of algorithms when I think about the questions, more than a methodology I see it as an algorithm following a series of instructions to solve a problem it is as if a computer will execute this algorithm and I am the one who executes this fascinating program

    Thank you for producing classes that go deeper than just “how to draw… xyz”.
    I’ve been able to take the fundamentals taught in your class and apply it to everything I draw.
    I’ve looked through your classes, and I can’t locate videos on color. I would be interested in your teaching style applied to a course on color theory.

      It can actually make it harder for a beginner to try to make a drawing with both the same proportions and the same size as the reference. Just focusing on the proportions can be a challenge. What you are referring to is referred to as sight size.

    @Brent Eviston, your quote in the background calles my attention but I cannot read the line at the bottom. This is what I am able to read:

    Can you please share with me what the last line says?
    Thanks.

    • @evolveyourart
      @evolveyourart  Год назад +1

      The line is from the prologue of Bela Balazs’ libretto for Bela Bartok’s opera Bluebeard’s Castle. The opera begins with a bard speaking to the audience directly about what they are about to see.
      Here is the full prologue:
      Once upon a time… Where did this happen? Outside or within? Ancient fable. What does it mean ladies and gentlemen? The song goes on. You look at me. My eyes are on you. The curtain of our eyelids is raised. Where is the stage? Outside or within, ladies and gentlemen?
      Bitter and joyous are the events around us but the world’s armies do not determine our fate, ladies and gentlemen. We see each other. We tell our own tales. Wherever we come from we listen with amazement, ladies and gentlemen.
      The music sounds. The flames are lit. Let the play begin! The curtain of my eyelids is raised. Take notice until it drops again, ladies and gentlemen. Old is this castle. Old is the tale enclosed by its walls. Observe carefully.

    Very basic (possibly silly) question - when you say you practiced drawing hundreds of basic shapes, I assume you meant free-hand and not with a ruler?

    “That will allow you to draw any subject.”
    Adding the word literally didn’t clarify the sentence in any way and is just meaningless filler.

    More talking than actual drawing instruction

    • @evolveyourart

      The reason that I talk so much, other than the fact that I love drawing, is that I am trying to teach students to think like artists, not merely copy techniques. Learning to think like an artist is much more valuable over the long run than technique alone. But I'll try to be as concise as I can!

      Excellent reply. We do need to be able to think like an artist.

    your teaching is so comforting and reassuring, must people give up drawing because they often doubt themselves and they dont have directions, and the most tragic thing is, it's not their mistake for doubting themselves since their teacher simply sucks at teaching(those teachers only know how to draw by themselves, but they dont know how to teach).

    Every art teacher tells us to break it down into simpler shaoes but I'm NEVER able to do it right. For example you drew the birds body as an oval but I would draw it as a parallelogram with soft curves here and there. I think that considering its entire body an oval is over simplifying the shape. I take every tiny curve into consideration and I think that is what I'm doing wrong but I'm really not sure I really really want some guidance!
