The suggestion to practice basic shapes is so simple but practical.
The questions:
1. What's the biggest shape (of the subject matter)?
2. What is its axis?
3. How big should it be?
4. Where on the page should it (the subject matter) go?
5. What changes should I make?
TY so much. Saves me a ton of time!
I don't understand the fourth and the Fifth question, can you explain it?
@@SamA-xu9gy The subject matter of your piece. I've added it now 👍🏾
How important Is the use of a drawing board in the context of your demonstration?
i can imagine some teen feeling hurt when he sees q 3 😭
That was a really well taught lesson - explanation of why, simple steps, seeing it in action and homework practice.

Thank you so much. Glad that you're here to learn!
@@evolveyourart glad to see you pop up in my feed!!!@
I think u mean " Best drawing teacher, Pencils down..."
I came here to say that, great video
Here here.
I've been drawing this way for years, but whenever someone asks me "can you teach me how to draw", I've never been able to articulate it because I just go on "instinct" and experience. You are the first person that has been able to articulate this process for me so I can help others, thank you so much.
Well, u can so not teach anyone how to draw in the first place to begin with. Teaching drawing is like teaching someone how to ride a bicycle. That u can not teach neither. U can show it, u can give tips n tricks on how to do it, u can say do this and that, coordinate this and that, dot it all together at the same time then, but end of the day the person must teach himself how to ride a bicycle. quoted from Betty Edwards book Drawing on the right side of the brain...
Every time I listen to your advices it changes me alot. I'm so grateful for your lessons, I'm one of your students on skillshare

Wow! This is a mindblowing video on drawing, how you systematically broke it down. I'm so glad youtube recommended this. I subscribed 🙏
Awesome, thank you! I'm glad RUclips recommended it to you and I'm glad you're here to learn.
@@evolveyourart thanks so much🙏
The process outlined in this video is very similar to progress with anything really. I'm a software developer from hobby and profession and asking questions and iteratively going forward is key too, refining each step when the overal process is outlined.
I also saw the analogy with drawing and the development of algorithms when I think about the questions, more than a methodology I see it as an algorithm following a series of instructions to solve a problem it is as if a computer will execute this algorithm and I am the one who executes this fascinating program
Interesting perspectives! Design thinking is very powerful!
You are a hero to many many begineers. Hats off to you
Lovely explanation!
Glad it was helpful!
purchased this course years ago, have enjoyed it greatly.
Great to hear!
You are awesome!!!! Love every part of your teaching videos! Now I can see some light at the other end of the tunnel! Thank you! 😜🥰
You are so welcome
Concur with other comments- I’ve thoroughly benefitted from your classes on Skillshare!
Thank you for producing classes that go deeper than just “how to draw… xyz”.
I’ve been able to take the fundamentals taught in your class and apply it to everything I draw.
I’ve looked through your classes, and I can’t locate videos on color. I would be interested in your teaching style applied to a course on color theory.
Thank you for everything you’ve produced thus far! And in advance for upcoming or future projects.
Thank you for your comment and so glad to hear how much you're getting from the classes! Working on the fundamentals really does improve everything!
We currently don't have any classes on color theory but we'll add it to the list for future videos. Thanks!
Is there a course available that covers shading techniques to complete an entire sketch? I was thrilled with how my bird sketch looked for the first time, and I felt disappointed when the video ended. 😢
The Shading Fundamentals and Shading Beyond the Basics courses in my Art & Science of Drawing series teach students how to shade basic forms and complex objects. www.brenteviston.com/offers/5ZqxRRWd/checkout
Hi Brent, I follow all your art classes on skillshare. I find your classes easy to follow and comprehensive as well. I just wanted to know if you're planning to bring any portrait drawing courses on skillshare. I would love to learn to draw the head planes, facial features, construction and anatomy. Thank you!!!!
It's great to hear how much value you find in the classes. There are no current plans for Brent to do a portrait drawing course on Skillshare. Make sure to subscribe to RUclips where Brent will post all of his new tutorials.
Inspiring! practice the basics, over and over until they are second nature. Repetition....the joy of knowing the fullness of what will be

Thanks I appreciate this I've been trying to draw on a bigger scale I have had to shift my picture a few times but I had already gotten stuck on detail before it was structured well.thanks it's in chalk and charcoal so I can make adjustments quite easily but it's another day or two work . You have beautiful drawings . foundations.👍

Excelent!
I feel like the key ingredient here, is having a physical reference the same size as the drawing, especially for the beginner learning to measure. Do you agree?
It can actually make it harder for a beginner to try to make a drawing with both the same proportions and the same size as the reference. Just focusing on the proportions can be a challenge. What you are referring to is referred to as sight size.
@@evolveyourart Yes I know what sight size is. What I’m saying is, sight size/reference image the same size as the drawing is preferred against using a device

Hi Brent, are these the same courses that are available on Skillshare and Udemy, or are they more in-depth on those platforms? Thanks so much!
Hello. The courses on my website, Skillshare and Udemy are much more in-depth than the videos that we post to RUclips.
Good to know, thanks! They are indeed very in depth!
@Brent Eviston, your quote in the background calles my attention but I cannot read the line at the bottom. This is what I am able to read:
“The curtain of our eyelids is raised where is the stage outside or within...”
Can you please share with me what the last line says?
Thanks.
The line is from the prologue of Bela Balazs’ libretto for Bela Bartok’s opera Bluebeard’s Castle. The opera begins with a bard speaking to the audience directly about what they are about to see.
Here is the full prologue:
Once upon a time… Where did this happen? Outside or within? Ancient fable. What does it mean ladies and gentlemen? The song goes on. You look at me. My eyes are on you. The curtain of our eyelids is raised. Where is the stage? Outside or within, ladies and gentlemen?
Bitter and joyous are the events around us but the world’s armies do not determine our fate, ladies and gentlemen. We see each other. We tell our own tales. Wherever we come from we listen with amazement, ladies and gentlemen.
The music sounds. The flames are lit. Let the play begin! The curtain of my eyelids is raised. Take notice until it drops again, ladies and gentlemen. Old is this castle. Old is the tale enclosed by its walls. Observe carefully.
Thank you so much!
You're welcome!
What supplies should i be using ?
You can get started drawing with any materials you have around the house. You can see some of the materials Brent recommends for students here: Beginner Drawing Materials: www.amazon.com/shop/theartscienceofdrawing
You explained this really well lol
Glad it was helpful for you!
Outstanding Lesson!!! 👏🏾👍🏾🔥
That drawing pad seen @15:04-16:35, the one that has 53 spirals, (yes I counted them 😂) PLEASE,

What BRAND
what paper TYPE
What paper WEIGHT is it??
Thank you!
Could u add in which pencils u use when ur using them. Like which pencil did u use when u did the light shapes?

You're welcome.
Thankyou, such great advice,I have subscribed to your channel.
Awesome, thank you!
My teachers showed me to do this (like this things) like drawing its muscles is it a wrong thing? Can you do a video doing live model?
thank you very much for the video, but I think the drawing that in the right is not appear correctly on the beginning because the color of pencil and the camera position.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
How do you know when looking at a reference when to construct with shapes or forms? My constructing ability with forms is pretty rough.
Can you please make a course for portrait drawing?i have done your basic drawing course as well as figure drawing and I am kind of used to it and I want to learn the portrait drawing in same way.

thx 👍👍👍👍
You're welcome!
I tried to find you on insta- I was completely over whelmed when you said minimum a hundred circles- my gosh- how long did that take?! Broke out the sketch, book and minutes later, have more circles than I can count! From half dollar size to 1cm diameter, already seeing improvement with form, line connectivity, and consistency! When you said you did 10 pages back and front, what’s the best paper to do this with? I need to be cost effective as possible- I’m a self funded artist haha
He used paper.
You can use any paper that you have around the house. Keep on practicing your circles! I do have a list of drawing material recommendations for beginner students: www.amazon.com/shop/theartscienceofdrawing but you can get started with Any Material!
6:18 I cant see them on your page at all...
I did not understand the fourth and fifth questions, can you explain? Thank you
Would you rather recommend buying your video tutorials or your book? I personally prefer books, but maybe I can get more info from the videos?
I recommend that students start with The Art & Science of Drawing. The courses provide a more complete look at the drawing process. My first book is an excellent supplement that covers most of the ideas in the courses, a few new ideas, and the book has dozens of new illustrations and diagrams. You can use the coupon code RUclips for 10% off the courses on my website: www.brenteviston.com/store
@@evolveyourart Thank you for your answer! :)
Arigatou sensai....🙏
Weird question, but how do you hand stuff on the wall?
Not weird, but probably the first! Silver push pins like these amzn.to/45lS7tI.
@@evolveyourart thank you!
This process works for clay as well
Brent you don't know what you've done for me. You just put me on
Great lesson but the background sound is distracting and unnecessary.
nice video but make a video about details
Basic shapes : an ellipse, a spear, a cone.
4:59 I probably have trouble with my phone
💚
Hi..was going to say something smart, intellectual or even compliments, decided to just say"jazzy"
👌🙏✨️
Thank you.
Very basic (possibly silly) question - when you say you practiced drawing hundreds of basic shapes, I assume you meant free-hand and not with a ruler?
“That will allow you to draw any subject.”
Adding the word literally didn’t clarify the sentence in any way and is just meaningless filler.
To mucho bla bla bla. Go directly onthe practice
I stopped tryin to draw because I always go frustrated when it looked funny
More talking than actual drawing instruction
The reason that I talk so much, other than the fact that I love drawing, is that I am trying to teach students to think like artists, not merely copy techniques. Learning to think like an artist is much more valuable over the long run than technique alone. But I'll try to be as concise as I can!
Excellent reply. We do need to be able to think like an artist.
@@evolveyourart
You didn’t talk too much.
What you did was give us a FABULOUS lesson.
It was beautiful.
You have a great teaching gift.
Thank you. 🙏🏾☺️
5 minutes, hasn’t drawn a shape yet
I remember watching your skillshare class years ago, and I still use the light sketching technique to this day. It gave me so much confidence to draw.
That's great to hear. Keep on practicing!
I'm so glad I found you on Skillshare. You're by far the best drawing teacher in my opinion
Thanks and welcome! Subscribe to the RUclips channel to get notified when new tutorials are posted.
@@evolveyourart I think the method fails in the case of face and hair.
your teaching is so comforting and reassuring, must people give up drawing because they often doubt themselves and they dont have directions, and the most tragic thing is, it's not their mistake for doubting themselves since their teacher simply sucks at teaching(those teachers only know how to draw by themselves, but they dont know how to teach).
I’m currently doing your course on Udemy and love it. I’m learning so much and my drawing is improving massively. You’re an incredible teacher and artist. Excited to find you on RUclips! Deep gratitude for sharing your talent 🙏
Great to hear! Keep on practicing. I'm glad that you're here to learn.
What is the name of the course?
Check out the courses: www.brenteviston.com/learn-to-draw
Thank you so much for your effort. Your clear and simple instructions are really helping me and are exactly what I need to be motivated and positive as I often feel overwhelmed and don't know how or where to start or how to practice.
Thank you again good sir.
Every art teacher tells us to break it down into simpler shaoes but I'm NEVER able to do it right. For example you drew the birds body as an oval but I would draw it as a parallelogram with soft curves here and there. I think that considering its entire body an oval is over simplifying the shape. I take every tiny curve into consideration and I think that is what I'm doing wrong but I'm really not sure I really really want some guidance!
