I never even attempted free-hand figure drawing before coming across this video. I definitely surprised myself and it didn't look half bad! Thank you for sharing this technique, it was a real joy to do!
I watched this video yesterday and something just clicked today. Since then I've drawn fifty little people and I'm proud of all of them. Both from photos and real life. Seeing how you draw gave me confidence that I could also see in this way and wrangle the overwhelming visual stimulus of reality into cute little pen sketches. This way of drawing is a visual metaphor for making sense of the world, of seeing what matters most. Thanks Scottie!
So many people have said "7 or 8 heads" but breaking it down specifically like this really clicked for some reason, especially the "knee is 1.5 heads down" part. Thank you!!
This was brilliant, I'm sketching again after 16 years and to say I'm rusty would be an understatement. Today we were tasked with sketching a live model, and boy was I struggling to figure out how to best capture his proportions. I'll definitely be trying to develop using your technique as it seems it'll be very useful, especially with enough practice.
What an amazing video. You get straight to the point, show fantastic (and varied) examples, and you make it look so easy. I can't wait to try this later.
I just realised after watching your free hand sketch video that all the while I was right!! I thought this style is not by the books ,but you made me realise that art is a personal style of expressing your imagination and not just following rules blindly... I thank you infinitely .... You gave me wings ❤️❤️❤️
Super tutorials. I've been taking a figure drawing class, and was taught the traditional approach of the stick figure and the bone structure. Spending 10 minutes learning your 4 dots is worth 3 months of classes I had. The light color washes at the end are very nice too. FWIW I prefer using a fountain pen to get some variations in the lines instead of using a marker. In any case, I subscribed and have to remember to check your tutorials often. I learn a lot for sure.
thank you so much for these tips, Scottie! I remembered another cool artist I look up to use these tips for his approach to ink sketching and your guide has been a wonderful help to keep in mind! It’s a fun approach that’s also applicable to other subject matters as well, Hope I can improve my ink drawing abilities so I can continue enjoying the process more freely and share my love for drawing with others too!
That was really helpful, thank you. One problem I tend to have is that without the security of line such as you display here, it is still difficult to get some satisfying results, especially at such sketch-outlines.
I do struggle a lot while sketching humans. They always turn out looking very cartoony. Shall definitely practice this method of yours .I am sure it will help me. Thank you for sharing.
This is great. I am learning that proportion is so key. It can really free up your creativity in a way. I understand the method for figure standing up. I am struggling a bit with the sitting down. From what I understand it's head to knees, knees to feet that determine spacing? So any angle really from head to knee determines the directionality of the lines. I think I may have just answered my own question 😂
Awesome method! On the second character, if I'm right, we're more on a 2.5 heads ratio for torso. I've checked on photoshop and this seems to be the right proportion more than 3 Heads.
oooh, I love this! I've been an illustrator for a while but I always struggled with drawing people. Somehow the 8 heads method never stuck with me, bc I can't deal with the 1/3 of this or that, I'm looking forward to try your method. Thank you for sharing :)
Method is super cool! Neve been able to draw well, I can never keep things the same size! I just need more practice, then my people wont need two different size boots haha
First time I see this way to approach the figure. Can’t say to the effectiveness since it is new to me. Seen David finch comic book style of doing figures, bean method in proko videos, skeletal method, and gestural with line of action method which I learned. Many method, guess it depends on which one clicks with a person easiest.
yea you're right! This suits quick loose sketching from observation, like urban sketching etc.. Those other methods are great for structuring a character for comics/movies or building figures with pencil for fine art drawings.
This tip helped SO much! Legit tried it today and my sketches compared to the other day have drastically improved. Thanks so much for sharing this
So good to hear! Keep up the great work👍🏼

For those who did not understand:
Step 1: Draw the dots.
Step 2: Draw the sketch.
And viola you are a certified artist.
Can you say f-a-c-e-t-i-o-u-s ?
FYI: voilà
So many people have said "7 or 8 heads" but breaking it down specifically like this really clicked for some reason, especially the "knee is 1.5 heads down" part. Thank you!!
Wow, I can imagine the placement of every limbs and the models' pose just from the dots. Thank you, this so helpful!
This has been GAME CHANGING!! I have always been so intimidated by figure forms and getting the proportions correct. Thank you thank you!!
I'm always awed by people who are confident enough to sketch in pen. Great tutorial. Thanks!
this has honestly been way more helpful for me understanding proportions than a good majority of other videos.
This is a game changer for portfolio builders.
Thanks you so much for the demonstration.

Omg your so talented and I’m extremely envious
This man loved connect the dots as a child and never stopped playing it
Dot approach verses boxes means less erasing. Dots help you to better measure distance.
Awesome method! On the second character, if I'm right, we're more on a 2.5 heads ratio for torso.
I've checked on photoshop and this seems to be the right proportion more than 3 Heads.
