      It’s not immoral for omnivore’s to eat animals. End of story. An animals evolution is not their fault.

      It doesn't always happen. It's important to consider peer pressure. The carnivores often come from carnivorous, unquestioning social environments. I, actually, hate it when people say things like "You wouldn't know it wasn't meat!" because, most of the time, they are going to go straight back to "I couldn't kill for myself. I know it's wrong but, if I don't think about it, I can still do it." That's the dominant pattern in my experience. The 'dissonance' just becomes more entrenched.

      "Im still gonna eat meat" he says rifht after saying he agrees with Ed's previous point. Translation "I know I'm wrong but I won't admit to it and change becsuse being stubborn and saying I'll continue to support an unethical industry makes me look "tough" and "strong" because I'm disagreeable. If I agreed with you and changed people watching this video would think I'm "weak". The other translation that correct at the same time is "everyone I know eats meat. I am a yolo fomo type. I only live once and have a fear of missing out. I don't want my corpse loving friends or family to look at me funny for being vegan or make fun of me, because I have no backbone or true self confidence to defend myself and realize they make fun of my veganism because they feel challenged and insecure, I just want to fit in and not have the status quo who've put a "stigma" on vegans to judge me or not hire me or laugh at me".
      This guy is so pathetic. Keeps saying "im still gonna eat meat" even though he agrees with Ed's points. Anything not to seem agreeable and change on camera because society thinks being agreeable in ANY situation even when one is CLEARLY wrong and everyone else is rifht, looks "weak"

    • @Scorpioide
      @Scorpioide Год назад +5

      Well, it actually does last long for the vast majority of people. Also, we have to consider that people are not actually honnest when saying they care about animal welfare. Sure we all do to some extent, but the more I debate this topic, the more I realize that there is a strong social desirability bias that leads people to overstate their "love" for animal.
      Don't get me wrong, I still think dissonance is real and prevents some people from turning vegan, but I also think most people are fully aware of the consequences of producing animal products, and they just do not care as much as they pretend, or at least not enough to change their habit. They make their choice several times a day, and I think we gotta accept that most people do not change how they feel even when they are given more than enough information about animal suffering. Point is : you can realize something is wrong when going into a rational debate, but if you are not sensitive enough to that thing, you won't make the effort anyway.

That is solely what it comes down to. Thank you for making people think about what they are saying versus what they are doing.

    • @silverblaize

      Exactly. They come in with all of their arguments about the food chain, the overpopulation of animals if we don't hunt them, the nutrients that their body needs from eating meat in order to survive (despite all the vegans in the world surviving just fine), so on and on, etc. But once they see how those arguments hold no logic, they finally just admit that they like the taste, and simply don't care about causing animal suffering. And I'm like, oh okay well you could have just been honest and said that from the beginning instead of coming up with these excuses. They give up any logic and debate at that point, and simply resort to childish excuses like "I want my candy, and I want it now!"
      It's sad, but there will always be people like that. The guy in this video even states that he isn't a moral person, and that he does many immoral things. So just think about it, if someone is already immoral in other areas of their life, why should they care about veganism? They don't care because they simply cannot care. They are the types of people who only care about an issue until it affects them personally.

Or responding to “you haven’t cleaned your room in months, you don’t want to live in filth do you” with “yes, I DO want to live in filth”. It just means “I don’t want to admit it” / “go away”. People are naturally stubborn with family members to start with so they’ll say things they don’t mean just to make it sound like they disagree. You are a feeling, sentient individual and deserve as much love and respect as other individuals. I've seen other instances where it's accepted as well. E.g. some vegans who have to take certain medications with animal products, or someone suffering from EDs binging on them and then breaking down and regretting their decisions. These people have my full sympathy and I would hate to see someone punching them down even further in the name of compassion!

    I mean maybe I noticed something only now and nothing changed, or maybe I (mis)noticed something that isn't there. If that's the case, I take everything back. It starts to feel like people just don't care or don't want to learn anything that might change their mind and there's nothing you can say to help them and you just start to let that frustration seep out. I have a feeling it's going to come in phases. Like I'll have times where I can be super patient and understanding and times when I'm so sick of people and their apathy I just want to explode. I hope and believe it's a skill that can be worked on and improved over time and Ed is probably just going through a more frustrating phase right now.

Last time family's friends really wanted to argue, which we eventually did as they felt full of arguments on nature, sustainability, human right, health, biology... etc, but the whole thing started with me saying "at the end of this, in about an hour or so, your only point will be that you eat meat because you like it". Which eventually was what happened. For some reason though, this cognitive dissonance and contraddictions were never enough: in the end people are quite ok with it. I even feel that they're MORE ok, kind of forgiveful for themselves after aknowledging this contrddiction (as it was a little sin you'd be loving to yourself in accepting). I feel you! Me and my sister are vegan, yet our parents are not. To them the only argument is taste and health, in which health can easily be debunked, I mean, it’s SERIOUSLY not a secret anymore that a plant-based diet is completely healthy. And the taste thing, it’s SO horrendous, especially when the same people then say, they wouldn’t do the same thing to a dog or would never ever work in a slaughterhouse and kill the animals themselves. The hypocrisy is SO big it hurts. The only thing I can say that might help, is really throwing the facts at them, and letting themselves come to the hypocrisy and flawed argument they have. I’d recommend watching Ed’s debates, which you already do, and his video on all arguments against veganism (It’s a TEDx Talk!) if you don’t have his book or don’t really like reading. This comment probably didn’t help you, so I’m sorry for that LOL. If you ever get good tips though, I’ll need them asap😭 Have a blessed day!! x

      Honestly I don’t think the *apparent* apathy is as big of a problem as we might think. A lot of people are just like this guy. They acknowledge that it’s not moral, or sustainable, and that a perfect world would be vegan. Yet they still go on to eat meat because of the taste. But if I think deeper about this dissonance I can see, that our culture makes it incredibly difficult to be plant based. We have to change our entire lifestyle. He won’t consider being vegan not because he’s apathetic, he’s not, he won’t go vegan because he’s never had to try any alternatives, and if he were to do so he wouldn’t be able to eat out where his friends eat, or cook the only recipes he knows, or not have to worry what he’s going to eat when he’s out, he knows the ridicule that comes with it too… I think that simply making alternatives and vegan options much more widespread a lot of these “apathetic” people wouldn’t be so apathetic anymore, because they could still continue living their life pretty normally. Idk, like maybe he’s so hung up on the taste because it’s all he knows and has grown up with and trying to change it would be overwhelming. Most people only discover the possibilities of plant based food when another person exposes them to it.
