@@Alex-qb2es, indeed, Mr. Edward “Winters” Gaunt’s understanding of metaethics is beyond reproach, which explains why he condones the MURDER of poor, innocent humans before they have the opportunity to even see the light of day. 👶

Debates between vegans and meat-eaters are some of the best illustrations of what cognitive dissonance looks like.
Cause most meat eaters don't try to discover why they are meat eaters.
that!
This comment is a great illustration of cognitive dissonance as well. Because everyone will agree, because either side will think this is a point for their side (if it was out of context).
@@serafimb2319 One side is acting in accordance with their beliefs while the other is acting contrary to their beliefs (which through the course of this video you can see are fundamentally the same beliefs, i.e. it is not necessary to eat animals and it is wrong to make them suffer). One side has confronted their beliefs and changed their actions and behaviours accordingly (Ed). The other has just come to an agreement on those same beliefs and logic but refuses to change actions or behaviour (Kyle). That's the definition of cognitive dissonance.
Facts
This guy's biggest problem is probably just that his friends and family would give him a hard time if he went vegan.
Not just him - probably the majority of Carnists.
Yeah, it's pretty isolating being in limbo. On one end, there are friends and family calling you an idiot for giving plant based a try. On the other end, you've got vegans calling you an idiot carnist with cognitive dissonance for not being 100% committed. It really does suck
@@SpaceOutlaww Yeah if vegans were actually respectful they'd probably achieve their goal of turning people vegan easier. All they do is insult meat eaters though, like they have never eaten meat before themselves, a bunch of do-gooders who can't do no wrong. I can guarantee every vegan uses products that have been tested on animals all the time without realising. Ed is the only vegan channel I can even bare watching because he doesn't scream bloody murder at who he's interviewing and actually comes off as pretty intelligent and I'm saying that as a meat eater myself.

this is interesting, because he's wearing his USA flag overalls (trying to make a point there too) and his whole demeanour is defensive and it's clear that his identity is very much caught up in his nationalism. i guess for him, a huge part of being an 'american' is hunting and eating animals.
there was no way this guy was going to be able to have a rational and reasoned discussion without getting riled up because of the entwinement of eating meat with his idea of how he sees an american to be and subsequently himself. it's like he was defending his 'americanism' more than having an isolated debate about eating animals.
@@lowkeyconvert8971 you said what I thought brother. Well said.

I kinda feel for this dude. Ultimately, he agrees with alot of the discussion, but his cultural attachment to meat is so strong he is unable to step over that line
his body NEEDS it.
@Onion Dark Knight The term “troll” usually refers to someone who maliciously harasses, attacks, or cyberbullies others. They might take your words out of context, spam you with offensive content or even engage in racist, homophobic, misogynistic, or otherwise hateful rhetoric. They usually have multiple accounts to run simultaneously on each thread. They are usually single, work in low paying jobs and have only “online” friends and associates.
Dont feel bad for him. He's a hunter
Hexs worse than the normal meat eater.
I agree, he didn’t say his body needed it At first, he said he needed it, and referenced culture. I think that the ridicule he believed he would face if he went vegan and having to alter his identity was too uncomfortable. Psychologically we are so attached to our identity that we will go to unreasonable. And self sabotaging lengths to maintain it. He probably goes hunting with friends and family. That’s his tribe that’s who he sees in self as.
Unpopular opinion, but I also don’t think him being a hunter is worse. He’s not outsourcing ethics and having somebody else do the dirty work. Some hunters control over population as well. And realistically, that is way better than factory farming, environmentally, and morally in my opinion
When I’ve had people I know, try to debate why I’m vegan, bringing up things like plants having feelings, or that small animals are killed in the process of harvesting plants that I consume, and, therefore, living beings are Harmed no matter what we eat .I ultimately say it’s the path of least harm. I believe people are gonna do whatever they gonna do, but with compassion and rapport, we can have conversations that change peoples minds, the focus should be on less harm. If someone wants to eat animals once a week, instead of every day, that is in the right direction. So if someone is choosing to hunt and kill one dear, where there might be over population, rather than buying dozens of factory farmed animals, that is also heading in the right direction.
I have never started a conversation about being Vegan. And every conversation I’ve had has been positive and left the person feeling good and interested in heading in the vacant direction. vegans will gain so much more traction if we approach conversations like this instead of aggressive condemnation. I certainly don’t have Eds amazing conversation skills. But I want to make a difference how I can, and this is really worked for me

@@someguy2135 I agree that it’s great to surround yourself with likeminded people. But the points made about convenience and social pressure are really important. I think we won’t convince the masses on the moral issue alone, it will only work with 2 of the three, or unfortunately maybe even three of the three. While cognitive dissonance frustrates us, it’s still a real phenomenon that lots of people fall into.
@@SilentSzZ We have a long way to go, but we have made a lot of progress in terms of convenience. It has never been easier to be vegan. It has never been more important either.
It’s rare to have someone leave the table and actively be open to trying veganism like in the previous video, but it’s also a solid outcome to have some faced with their cognitive dissonance and grapple with their behavior + conscience.
Might never know if he changes, but for a normal person it’s hard to have this sort of discussion (where he directed the arguments instead of being lectured) and not rethink things over time.
Once again, thank you for your activism Ed.
Yessssssssss!!! This this this this ^^^^^^^
He certainly will never change because he has no moral problem with killing an animal if the intention is to eat that animal. He made that very clear. There are many people who simply cannot look beyond their culture and he was certainly one of them. Eating meat for him is so much a part of his identity and that is the case of many people particularly from more rural areas that it is an impregnable fortress against the idea of veganism.
This guy’s view would be identical to almost everyone where I live in Queensland, Australia. Everyone I know here thinks that I am literally making myself suffer greatly for being vegan and cannot comprehend at all why I would do that to myself. But I am originally not from these parts as an immigrant so by definition I am open to change. The people I live amongst are just not. They are prisoners of their culture but happy to be so.
@@robsengahay5614 it's all about planting seeds and he'll come away from the conversation with it on his mind . It's very hard for most people to change on the spot, the cognitive dissonance is too strong. Most of us here probably were brought up nonvegan and chose veganism later in life, but I think it's really easy to forget how it can feel to confront what you once thought was true and then realise that what you believe and how you act aren't aligned. Bearing that in mind helps to stay patient and guide people to their own conclusions, because even if they fight it on the spot it makes them really think instead of being lectured at and shutting down.
@@XxFatalSaintxX I understand all of that but sometimes seeds are scattered on stony ground and have no chance of germinating. OMG this made me so hungry I'm gonna go get a big fat juicy steak and a side burgher loan and eat it while I watch this video. I'm gonna pause and come back when I finish my burgher cause this is a very interesting video that I want to watch. Thank you for the amazing content, I really enjoy your totally not manipulative and wholesome content. You are the best ed.
P.S. I too like dogs as much as you Ed. I really....really do.

Do you have autism? That could explain your inability to empathise
@@afaultytoaster autism is not a lack of empathise. I have autism AND I am a vegan. Please educate yourself about autism.
I'm surprised you didn't call him out on the idea that livestock being "less intelligent" justifies violence our against them. It would have been a slam dunk to point out that pigs are just as intelligent as dogs. Nonetheless, excellent debate Ed. You're an inspiration to animal lovers everywhere.
True. The Nazis put mentally handicapped children in concentration camps using a similar ableist argument -- that the lives of those deemed "lesser intelligent" are worth less. The argument should be about sentience, not intelligence. I believe Ed is aware of this, which is why he uses the word "sentience" instead of "intelligence." He only pursued the intelligence line of reasoning because his argument was pursuing that line of reasoning, which Ed knew would eventually reach the conclusion "but kale is less intelligent than a cow," single-handedly refuting the carnist justification for eating cows over dogs.
His reaction reminds me of when my buddy confronted me with my actions as a meat eater 6 yrs ago. Hopefully he'll think about his actions and do the right thing.
I can see clearly how veganism will lead to a deeply better reality. Thank you Ed, you're a huge part of the revolution.
I am now 5 years vegan. Go vegan for the animals and the earth . ✊

Thank you ed for giving the innocent animals a voice. How you remain patient is beyond me 💚💚💚💚
I hope it gave him something to think about later, but really I'm glad for the impact these debates have for the audience who can stumble onto these videos and learn a lot from watching them
Love your work Ed! I bought two of your books already, once for myself and one for my girlfriend! 🌱
The Connections (2021) [short documentary] 💖
Oh Ed … ❤ Thank you, for your unwavering passion for all animals. Much love 💗
finally a new earthling ed video!!!
Yes, Mr. Edward “Winters” Gaunt’s understanding of metaethics is beyond reproach, which explains why he condones the MURDER of poor, innocent humans before they have the opportunity to even see the light of day. 👶
The fact that he repeatedly asserts that “humans are animals” shows what an abject hypocrite is that MURDEROUS sinner. 😩
Furthermore, it is debatable whether Ed is truly vegan in his outlook, since he recently stated on the national television programme, GBNews, that he believes we ought NOT ban animal agriculture!
“I’m not even saying that we should ban meat, dairy and eggs right now”.
Mr. Ed Gaunt, So-called “VEGAN” activist. 😐

Go to the 8:15 mark.
What a frustrating watch, you bring him all the way to the point of agreeing with you on literally everything and he *still* refuses to concede his actions are unjustifiably immoral
The only true conclusion would have been for the guy to admit that selfishness drives his actions. He agreed with everything Ed said but just values his own wants over the preferences and interests of animals.
It can be hard for people to concede things like that on the spot, but Ed's done a great job at planting seeds and that guy's never going to think of eating meat in the way he did before.
@@christophed8936 That's exactly what I was thinking too
That’s because they’re not immoral
@@FIshfood500 lol
"We as people are above animals"... The point of being above, of having civilization, is to protect those more vulnerable than ourselves. Being greater, we have a greater responsibility.
That's the downside. We are making humanity weaker.
Humans are animals, so it's a nonstarter
@@nattyfatty413 Nobody here is using "animals" in that context but you. Try again.
@@MustardSkaven Yeah. Everyone here is using a word disingenuously. That was my point. Now you can try again and this time without anthropocentrism and argumentum ad populum
Thank you for speaking up to animals, Ed 💚
Based on his summary at the end:
- I _need_ to eat animals because it's what I do.
- I _choose_ to think the animals I eat had a happy life until I killed them/paid to have them killed so I don't feel _guilty_ for killing them.
Although he didn't concede anything, I think he knows he was being illogical. Hopefully he'll ponder this some more and conclude he needs to change.
What if he is simply okay with animal abuse but isn't honest about it cause of both the camera and societal stigma?
@@MustardSkaven That's quite possible too.
@@MustardSkaven
I'm ok with whatever you want to call it. It's my food,
Well done, Ed.
Thank you Ed. I love your compassion and empathy for the voiceless animals 🙏✌️♥️♥️♥️
He claims intelligence but cows are more intelligent than dogs and pigs are as intelligent as 3 year old human children. He should be eating dogs, then. Lol
I like how he uses “that’s a loaded question” instead of “yes, you’re right and I can’t admit it”
much love ed , thanks for the video
"Bye Kyle!" Seeds planted. Ed, you are legend.
I wish there was a way to count how many "at the end of the day" we hear in these videos hahaha it's kind of funny how often these statements pop up and it's usually followed by something in the lines of "I get your point but I just don't want to change". Looking back before I was vegan, I think I used to say similar things to myself to stop the reasoning that would lead me to change my habits and views. Anyways, great work Ed!
I was thinking the same thing. Lol. That and "it's a lifestyle" No moral justification. Just an admission that that's how they want to live. We all default to that when we don't really have a better reason.
People have a hard time admitting that they kill animals for taste pleasure.
I hope he will contemplate & realize how his own values goes against his actions.
I am so grateful for your logical, calm way of approaching activism. I get so caught up in my emotions, your way of debating and your kindness are such inspiration. Thank you for your work to advance this info in the world.
Watching this guy slowly devolve into ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ is at once amusing, but also frustrating.
i'm vegan and i thought this was very funny. We cant expect people to change their world view in one day. hahaha. They both did a great job accepting this conversation!
@@beccafireflystar I thought it was funny too. The look on his face was priceless at the end, and the way he kept desperately grabbing his phone to save him.
He didn't want to admit that he eats animals and hunts them to continue fitting into the lifestyle and mindset of his friends who do the same. New vegans would do well to find new vegan friends if need be. The free web site and app Meetup is a good way to find them.
Thanks Ed, as always you are an inspiration. been vegan now for 1 year. (i was raised vegetarian) I was looking on youtube; how to better argue against meat consumption. Stumbled upon your videos, and turned me and my mother into vegans.

My truth I have no problem killing animals for food
18:27 "I... objectively do not need to eat meat. I do feel, in my situation, the way I eat and the way I live my life, that I do." 🤡
'It's a way of life...full circle.' The Lion King has so much to answer for.
This really felt like a deprogramming session that was almost successful.
Thank you for doing outreach and debating at my former university (TXST '22 Graduate)! Good to see you're showing TX some love and giving us whack-o's a chance.
Ed is such a master of his craft - when the guy says 'I would eat my dog if I had to', most people would immediately lose their minds and the debate would spiral out of control, however Ed calmly nods in agreement 😅
Would they...? I mean I too admire his calm and patience in keeping up the debate when the "opponent" just stubbornly refuses to concede, but I feel like I know very few people who would actually spiral at that statement... and they're all over 55
@@melitrophium that's lovely to hear you know lots of people who aren't upset by the notion of killing and eating their pet dog
@@adamprotz upset, yes. They would care, even lot. But freaking out? Not at all. The amount of people who are basically desensitized to these statements (including me) is large... and kind of scary

Ed - please come to NZ! Our animal farmers and New Zealanders so engrained and nostalgic to our farming history need these conversations with you!
Hey Ed! Hope you’re enjoying your time in Texas. HEB has a ton of vegan options and despite the stereotypes Texas is a great place to be vegan.
I can confirm. I went shopping there while visiting my brother who lives in Texas.
Texas loves meat and Texas is not the ideal place for vegans
Texas consumes a lot of meat
This had me laughing so much😂😂 Ed you’re the best. You manage to debate so eloquently and respectfully but also won’t back down. Kudos!!!
Thank you so much Ed, you tried so hard to have him comfortable enough to be vulnerable and accept that what he does to animals is immoral. Your calm non threatening voice, giving him time to speak and think is very respectful and respectable. You’re talented.🙏🫂🥂
Where is morality defined?
I love the moments of self-reflection and acknowledgment of the hypocrisy or failure in their own arguments. It's so brave and touching and humble. Not because its a win for veganism but because it's a moment of growth and awareness that is so powerful to see.
He understands. It’s actually quite beautiful. He’s struggling with the contradiction between his actions and what he knows to be true in his heart and all the cultural indoctrination and normalization of animal consumption.
I think the next step in leading people is to give them emotional cover for making the switch. “It’s not your fault that you believe that. We have been taught from a young age that it’s okay to kill some animals for our own purposes. Just know that it’s okay to rethink what you never had a choice to believe.”
Then reaffirm their humanity and mirror and then make the ask. “I think you understand this dilemma and I think you’re a good person. You seem to get it. You’re just fighting the cultural indoctrination right now. Look I totally understand that. I went through the same process myself. I think I knew in my heart that it was not right what we do to animals unnecessarily. But why not challenge yourself and give it a try for a week or a month?”
This is perfect! Absolutely facts.
Beautifully said!
A great conversation. I hope this will make him reflect and question his habits in the future. It is so hardwired into our brains to eat meat. It’s just what people do.
