In today’s debate I sit down with Kyle, a hunter from Texas. We spoke about the ethics of what we do to animals and of his history of hunting, which led to a very interesting discussion about Kyle’s beliefs and in particular how he deals with the guilt he feels when he hunts. How do you think it went?

So true. I'm Hindu, and the use of milk for dahi, ghee, butter, and doodh became so normalized in our families and communities (and even ritualized, might I add, through the use of milk as offerings in pujas) that confronting these normalized logics and behaviors was an uphill battle. Unlearning is a difficult process, but sometimes it's the most noble thing to do. :)

Whether this young man will become vegan or not regardless I applaud his way of thinking and talking, he is very intelligent and courteous and this was a very pleasant debate.
And not even mentioning how tired he said he was ! I’m speechless !

Wait... don't applaud him if he doesn't go vegan. Being honest about something then refusing to change after you've been made to think more deeply about it is even worse.
I am not sure why people who defend eating animals always compare themselves to obligate carnivores like lions and tigers rather than to other primates. Could it be because primates rarely eat flesh, they don’t subsist on it at least three times per day, they often eat the flesh of their species for ritual and dominance, and of the animals that they do eat, insects would be the primary source of animal protein and they would never consider eating those for the nutrients they believe that they need to derive from animals to survive.

Kyle is a rare breed of person who's actually honest and thoughtful and not afraid to have some uncomfortable realisations and self-reflection. He's got the spirit.

Nope no cheating, I've slaughter a few chicken's myself so I'll do the dirty work for you ,you just eat. The chicken's don't have a clue what's going on and from the pen to the kill cone Is under 20 seconds and head cut clean off, no pain no suffering , so you can enjoy guilt free chicken on me we all win

He's also more honest and self-reflective than some vegans. Not everyone became a vegan exclusively by being honest and self-reflected.

I grew up in a hunting and fishing family. The one time I was about to discharge my fire arm at a large animal the only thing I felt was adrenaline. I literally could not stop shaking. I was unable to pull the trigger. I will never forget that moment and that feeling. Now I am 5 years vegan. I am very grateful for having my eyes opened.
Now think of all that remorse, regret, self-recriminations and karma you avoided by following your conscience!

That’s what got me to stop eating animals when I was 16. I asked myself that question… Would I have the ability to take an animal’s life instead of buying meat from the store, and the answer INSTANTLY was hell no. I couldn’t live with that hypocrisy. It’s been 30 years now.

I throughly recommend the book, The World Peace Diet by Will Tuttle PhD. What this chap writes about herding culture will utterly blow your mind. It should be compulsive reading in every secondary school.
Grew up in a butchering/farming family. Everyone a Butcher except my old man. Learnt the tricks of the trade at 12. Never hesitated. Some people have different sense of morals. You considered animals equal. I didn't. Never have a felt guilt for killing an inferior creature

the jargon that is utilized leads me to suspect that it is staged. In everyday life, you won't run into a hunter who will think about an animal they have killed, take off the skin, and cut off the head, as - innocent, especially not one who hunts for sport. sport can't be related to sadism, either. sport hunting is not something I support, but it is clear that sadism has no place in sports. the video is jam-packed with minute details that are so absurd and out of touch with reality that the only reasonable inference is that they were done on purpose to create a special impact.
I can relate a little with him. Before I was vegan, I would always feel bad about eating meat and wish that I "didn't have to." It seems dumb now but I really believed that you needed to eat meat to be healthy. Plus, I'm a fitness person and into bodybuilding and I didn't know it could be done without meat. I really dd feel bad about eating meat because I knew an animal had to die for me. Luckily, someone turned me onto the Game Changers and when I realized you could be athletic without meat, I literally went vegan overnight. I spent a couple of hour on the computer looking up "vegan protein", got my plan together, and I've never looked back. Now I'm jacked and guilt free! 🤣

This is the first time when a debate made me cry. It's really nice to see mind open people even if they don't plan to change. I don't know why it really hit me deep. The part about the prayer made me sobbed and you can see Ed being emotional. Such a deep conversation.
I also cried, the comments on this video are so positive and motivating as well.
I had the same reaction. It was a profoundly mutually respectful conversation on both sides and towards the end you could see that there was a softening contemplation from the hunter’s mind and heart. I hope he continues this line of thought. Maybe he’ll make the switch 💚

I have many of these conversations with strangers out on the street and have heard and experienced a lot. I can tell you, I also shed a tear with this convo. It's my belief this was the conversation Kyle needed. He recently recognized all the little hints throughout his daily routine... Putting down the chicken at the grocery store, realizing how contradictory his ethics class was, etc. Then BAM, Earthling Ed show up to paint a clearer picture for him. Much respect Kyle.

What a relief dude. I’m fifteen years vegan and from the American South. If you aren’t attacking someone and actually posing questions, you may be surprised at the amount of people you run into that have this consideration and help to gain traction towards the goal of ending animal suffering. Well done again Ed.
Attacking someone will NEVER work. It’ll only cause them to hate veganism even more. Unfortunately a lot of vegans forget this fact. We don’t hate the person, we hate what the person pays for and consumes. If the best way to change what they consume is to be calm and understanding then that’s what we should do. It’s all about the animals at the end of the day.

This guy should start doing wildlife photography! I used to help teach spearfishing (hunting underwater), stopped that, went vegan nearly 7 years ago and now I film the beautiful sea life and make underwater and nature films isntead. I believe he will go vegan, he is where I was 7+ years ago.
I love to scuba dive, I have NEVER felt very safe diving with spearfishing, not only was I afraid of some one getting killed by a 'missed' shot but because I'm a Vegan.

The profoundly sad thing here is that with the way we are destroying the fishes ecosystem and killing so many fish and marine animals every day you are chronicling something with your photographs and film which your children or grandchildren may never have the opportunity to experience.

Can you explain why shooting one deer for food is considered 'unecessary' and solely for pleasure whereas eating crops grown using pesticide/tilling etc is considered 'necessary'? I understand that an animal might not die in the production of an equatable number of calories during crop production, but realistically it's extremely likely that more will die. So why is the hunting of one deer worse?

An animal that has been killed by hunting doesn’t really care whether the hunter’s motivation is food or sport. And, how can it be ethical, when both are unnecessary? Great point.

Jesus never ate meat. His parents never ate meat. They were in the Essenes. Nobody in the Essenes ate meat. They were all vegetarian. Jesus was always preaching about loving animals and how we should treat them as humans and not kill them and eat them. He only ate fruit, nuts and goat cheese and milk. At that time they had only few vegetables.

We the vegans always get the blame when a conversation is on the negative side, but it's so obvious that it is the non-vegan that dictates the mood and tone 100% of the time. We all wish every outreach conversation would go as well as this one, and yet we ourselves or our method of activism gets blamed every time there is any negativity.
It can be a mixture of both
It happens to anyone daring to challenge the status quo. They have to walk on eggshells, even if their activism is legal.

That's why outreach is all about talking to people who are ready. Not finding someone to "debate" with. Those debates are more for showing the audience, like in eds case when he goes on live TV against animal farmers
I swear this dudes a vegan trolling as a hunter, he has so much more knowledge about animal welfare, more so even than most vegans I know!
He said he learned about some things in his university classes about the ethics of eating animals. He even read some research papers about it. Hopefully that knowledge plants a seed in his mind for the better.

"How did that make you feel...." such a powerful & important question, & very easy to overlook when debates turn into both parties simply regurgitating their facts at each other.
This is something I'm trying more and more to incorporate into my street outreach, and so far I'm really liking the results.
Hey, enjoy your channel and I'm interested in what your reply would be if the hunter had said something like "well if you think me killing one deer to eat is unecessary and only for pleasure, then I think the 80kg of lentils you eat instead (along with the insect deaths, pesticide use, water use, land use, fertiliser/manure use) are equally unecessary...and that causes more animal deaths through poisoning, starvation, chopping etc"?
What would a solid, logical reply be? Degrees of sentience? The nuances of intent between shooting and pesticide use?
You could argue that growing/harvesting 80kg doesn't necessarily definitely kill more than one animal, but in reality I don't think that's realistic or could possibly be true.

I find it quite sickening how even the majority of meat eaters believe slaughter of animals is unethical and done really badly yet still continue...
Cognitive dissonance is sometimes a very difficult thing to overcome.
because most people do not distinguish between morality and ethics and use these terms interchangeably. it is perfectly ethical to buy meat in a butcher's shop, but it is not ethical to kill an elephant just because the tusks would look good next to the fireplace
nothing wrong with eating meat. the methods can be better, for better quality of meat.

One of the rare hunters who's truly just done this because of the bonding with grandpa and being programmed to do it, rather than doing it to make up for a lack of power he feels within by taking it away from others.
An honest hunter is hard to find and he found one.

Grew up hunting, taught by my father when I was about 7-years old. I'm now 21 and went vegan a year ago.
I shot my last animal (pigeon) when I was 19, so it took another year to go vegan, but hunting is actually what planted the original seed of thought. As soon as the pigeon hit the ground, I thought to myself, "Why did I do that?". It really made me think about how we view animals.
@@jamesthorogood1479 Thank you for sharing that I can relate somewhat to this because I grew up in a family that rode horses and supported rodeo and there were many moments where I had that same why did I do that thought. It's a shame in these situations children are not allowed to feel and show their innate compassion

I never expected for the conversation to go this way with a hunter. He was respectful in the conversation and was not trying to debate with you with the typical ignorant comments. I think he could very well find it in his heart to go vegan.
He seemed very sensitive and not full of ego, unlike a lot of the other guys who seem to want to take part in this conversation.
I love the way Ed gets Kyle to explain how trophy hunting is always wrong, then asks him what the difference is between hunting for food and trophy hunting. Kyle there are many good vegan options in San Marcos make the change you will feel an immeasurable amount of “feel good” in your life.
I'm vegan and I'm currently a vet student, I've been working on farm placements as part of my course and have found it surprising how much easier it's been having open conversations with farmers than it has been with some of my non-vegan friends. Great video 👍

Excellent video. I grew up in a small, rural community with many people that are similar to this man (the student). I am vegan now but I feel like right before I became vegan I thought just as he did. I felt entitled to animals as if I had dominion over them to do what I want but what I really believe is that we are stewards of the earth and we need to take care of animals and their environment. I hope he makes the switch. It is an adjustment at first but so worth it. Thanks Ed.
Absolutely! I think having dominion is interpreted by many to mean absolute control, which includes unbridled violence and destruction. Stewardship is more about protecting/caring for. Obviously the opposite. Maybe one day, when we have moved away from satisfying the savage beast in us and developed a greater connection with the higher self; the spirit of compassion, we will know and live what it means to be stewards.
so, what's the difference? what gives you the right to feel like the steward of the earth? you used to feel like one of animals and now you are above them?

There are certain things that we do to seek a bond with others in which case we don't think about the moral consequences. When I was little I always wanted to go fishing with my dad to bond with him but when I did it, it felt horrible. I imagined the pain of a fish getting hooked through its mouth and being dragged by it's own weight through the water. After that I never stopped eating fish though. Until I really took time to watch videos like these and consider whether I was against animal abuse or not.
I really appreciate you sharing your experience like this since it's great for developing empathy in others!
Though one thing I'd suggest is that you change 'it' to them because, as talked about in the video, animals aren't objects and by addressing them as such ('othering' them) we make it easier to treat them like they are. Language is powerful.
That's great you reconnected your empathy. Children are born with this compassion for animals, but it's mentally beaten out of them by their parents and society who lie and indoctrinate them.
(There are exceptions of course, like psychopaths born without empathy)
I really enjoyed the way you two engaged with each other. Both very thoughtful & open-minded humans who let each other finish their sentences while always being polite. It's honestly so refreshing to watch! And the way you two complimented each other in the end was just so heartwarming. It was exactly the opposite of toxic masculinity; just honest respect and willing to show yourself vulnerable :)

As someone who used to eat meat, pretty much every meal, 3 times a day. I respect this conversation so much. When i was a meat eater, i had no logic and would argue why i should eat meat, whilst contradicting myself. This guy actually has such an open view, which is rare for meat eaters to have and such an honest look at it objectively. Without health issues, i most likely would have still been eating meat because i was so stubborn to why i should eat meat. We need more meat eaters to see this meat eater, with such a logical stance and maybe more people would convert.
Amazing conversation, nice to see such an open mind. I appreciate your composure because I lost my mind a bit today and needed something to ground me back to sanity for the best interest of the animals. All the love, Ed.

WOW, crazy to have such a conversation with a hunter! I've already spoken with hunters a few times, a euphemism would be to say that these were not the best discussions I've had on veganism ^^' Kyle was way more open-minded and genuine than most hunters or even quite a few omnivores!
One point I'll take from this discussion, Ed, is when you underline that there is no difference between hunting for pleasure and hunting for food, which is a distinction I often get from omnivores who claim that food justifies the killing. But indeed, killing for food means killing for pleasure, as we can get what we need from plants. I'll keep this argument for the next time I need it! I always learn so much from your videos, and quite a few of my replies are literally sentences I've heard from your mouth in your videos! I often say that my ability to outreach with omnivores during cubes of truth mainly comes from you, as I've learnt so much from your videos! Thank you for the amazing work you are doing!

Please please please come to Madison, Wisconsin, Ed, to debate the deer hunting that is rampant in the area beginning in Autumn. Too few people here realize how deer populations are increased for hunters.

One can fully understand and agree with the ethics and morals for being vegan, but that won’t necessarily motivate change with that one person, but as more and more non vegans are exposed to vegan morals it can help change.
I don’t think this individual’s thinking is “profound”. Most “God fearing people” never stop doing doing morally wrong things and chalk it up to “well, we’ll see what happens during the moment of reckoning i when the day of judgment comes at the pearly gates, so real change isn’t necessary and I’ll worry about it then , oh well.”
Those “pearly gates” talks are sometimes the only thing keeping people aligned on the path of even having a moral compass. That is why veganism gets pegged for ideology and if it is indeed ideology, it is going to reside in a very restricted lens in terms of what *is* looked at vs what *could* be looked at. For example, Buddhism is a better starting lens to become and stay vegan or the capacity to connect with nature at a higher level, rather than resting on a point-solution of the sole ideology of veganism to substantiate that we don’t need meat and let animals live.
The flaw in the logic is relying on feelings at *all* times to decide right vs wrong. It’s unreliable and too vulnerable to shaky grounds on even small situational deviations

I just ignore all these crazy theories, because it's been my happiest 15 months for me personally. I know my morals, compassion and sense of justice are now all align with each other. The future is full of hope and the future is vegan.
