Sometimes I feel as though Ed could turn a lot of people's minds around about racial inequality, wealth inequality, etc. He's so calm, kind, and he listens. He doesn't just spew the same script over and over, he meets people where they are.
Those with racist views would put up the same arguments and use the same tactics as those with non-vegan views.
Sometimes I think the Americans are just captivated with his accent and patos.

Even brainwashed kids are waking up to all the trendy woke nonsense and rebelling against these goody-goody control freaks... They're also fed up of being demonised for wanting to protect their land and eat farmed animals that graze grasslands - Vegans can't eat grass even though it's the most common form of greenery, grazers can, and we can eat them. Replacing this system with more mono-crops instead of less is maximum environmental destruction. As a non-fake Green Guy I'd start by banning grain crops and the decorative plant industry, all greenhouses used from food production.

I don't own an iphone and thrift when ever I can. Veganism is not about perfection. We live in a world driven by money and unfortunately avoiding cell phones or the occasional new garment is just not possible for some of us including vegans. It took me a really long time to give up animal products because I didn't understand or want to hear about my impact and the damage and suffering my consumption was causing. Six years after going vegan I can't imagine returning to my old ways. It's been the most rewarding and also eye opening decision I've ever made. It's possible to do your best maybe not be perfect but when you stop eating animals you're already reducing your impact and incredible amount. I hope all the people who are considering a vegan diet will take the leap. It's worth it.

Good message, but the world isn't driven by money. It's driven by the self-interested choices of the populace. People choose to have animals killed for taste pleasure and convenience. People choose to support exploitative businesses if doing so benefits them personally. There's no accountability among the people, so we blame selfish decisions on our ability to trade rather than looking in the mirror for everything that's wrong with the world.
When you understand why you become vegan it’s like a switch that gets flipped in your brain. I think these conversations are so important bc it helps people see different perspectives.

Whether it’s wilful ignorance or a lack of empathy, it bothers me to my core how normalised we have allowed this to become.

Great discussion - many of my leftist friends have similar counterpoints to veganism that appeal to futility which Sahil brings up, such as the common, "There's no ethical consumption under capitalism." It's odd and inconsistent to hear that from leftists, and I think Ed does a great job of approaching the conversation (as always) with grace and consistency.
the statement is true but even under capitalism its possible to have not only worker exploitation but also animal exploitation, so its preferable to have one over both.

I think this is the Achilles heel of this movement. Many Vegans dumb it down to left vs right, Theist vs Atheist, capitalism vs communism argument. There's somehow this notion among people that Vegans are leftists, Atheists, communists and have some large insidious plan which they propagate under the garb of veganism.
Vegans just can't comprehend to appeal this cause in a stand alone manner. They must have same same political or ideological or theological consensus.
And when people start to associate Veganism with left, they also associate it with other left ideologies like wokeism. And their grudge or presumption for one leftist ideology percolates and seeps down to veganism.
So their mind turns up their defense systems whenever in a debate with Vegan, and starts to give all types of contradictory reasons for not being a vegan. They become stubborn and make it an ego issue. Like if they accept that veganism has some points to ponder upon, they will have to suffer from an identity crisis and they have to change each and every aspect of their life. Like if they are believe in God they have to be an atheist or if they are republican they will have to be a democrat or whatever.
I mean how hard can it be to convince the people to not kill a living being unnecessarily when we have better alternatives. Turns out it is very hard, so there must be something that they are trying to defend that they hold very precious. And they think Veganism will destroy it and impact the society in a bad way.

I hazard a guess that since he grew up vegetarian he understands how meat is dispensable, thus there is less of a mental/cultural hurdle to bypass. He probably is honest that is it mostly about taste than anything else. That being said I could see myself being good friends with someone with his personality, because he is a deep thinker who reflects rather than reacts.

I was, much to my surprise, moved to tears watching this. Sadness for the suffering of the animals, hope for the change that is, can and will occur on this world, and admiration for both of these men. Yes, let us not forget, in all of the areas where we can do better. And, as we know, veganism can be difficult if you only think of yourself, but easy when you think of the animals. 💖

Why would a vegan call an animal abuser a "lovely guy"? Do you call a child abuser a "lovely guy"? Why is it different when the victims don't look the same?

Also, I honestly do not think we should equal those two issues. There are many many differences, but what I am primary thinking about is that child abusers in any case know that it is wrong what they do, and they live in a society where it is impossible if Not really actively wanting to believe otherwise it is more than clear that this is not okay.
With buying animal products in the supermarket, which is sadly a completely normalized Thing, a lot of cognitive dissonance and missing knowledge is connected.
A very easy thing that shows it is not the same: Nearly all of us were animal abusers once and first had to learn that we are and that we can change.
The Same does NOT hold for child abuse.
However, even if you still consider this a valid comparison, I still would like to encourage you to not use it in Public. You only reach the opposite from what you would like to reach.

Second hand technology is reducing the environment impact and exploitation but nevertheless when you buy a second hand product there was somebody who used it first hand, which still causes environmental and ethical issues.

There isn't a vegan phone. To use a smartphone one must purchase something that resulted in great death and destruction. So of course purchasing a second-hand one is massively superior in every respect.
@@rangv733 One could say the same about electric vehicles, they aren't necessarily better than cars but y'know, it's a compromise bc people can't or don't want to rely on different modes of transportation. The best option is owning no car, but what if you need one for work? What if you like to travel alot? Are you gonna force everyone to take trains, buses, or simply walk on foot? What about hitchhiking, now you're just relying on someone else to volunteer for your own pleasure.
This is a joint effort! The solution would be not to stop buying smartphones, but for working conditions to improve, for retired phones to be recycled, etc. If you want to be mad at someone, be mad at the big companies who are not taking their responsibility towards making these solutions become a reality, and instead prefer to exploit for profit!
Sick of people that think having vegan friends is an inconvenience. Seriously, when given that facts it comes down to how selfish you are.

Such a good discussion once again Ed! Bravo for this young man saying what many might also feel. I was there before I became vegetarian, then where I was before becoming vegan. My progress was a succession of bargaining with myself. Finally, I could no longer lie to myself. Society is so set up for not doing these things but has come a long way in the last 35 years. Just be sure if you go vegan you actually pay attention to nutrition. Just because it's vegan doesn't mean it's healthy. As we know better, we do better.

I think how we treat animals also directly correlates to how we treat other humans, female genital mutilation, sexual assault, and human trafficking are major issues around the world once people have determined something as having lower worth than them (wether it be a person or an animal), scary justifications are made.
