  • Hi people,
    a little (medium sized) video about some of the worst parts to healing in world of warcraft. Although often fun and and more active than just following the same rotation over and over again, there are also some definite downsides to it. Enjoy :)

    I played with a druid healer yesterday that talked about a mage that refused to stop taking agro and made them wipe. The druid said that after the wipe, the mage was lower on his healing prioritylist then the hunter's pet, something I found amusing. :D

      @@jimmym3352 As a hunter main, yeah, tossing a quick heal toward the pet occasionally can help a ton. Especially in TBC, pets make up a large portion of hunter DPS. I am quick to pull my pet back out of bad mechanics and always throw on Mend Pet when needed but sometimes that isn't enough to keep him alive. This is especially true through raid/party wide damage and debuffs. A quick heal/dispel from a healer is going to help the overall group. If everyone is topped off and you're just chillin', healing the pet helps the overall DPS of the group.
      If in a 5 man and I send my pet to save you from a mob hitting you in the face, that's even more reason to help keep him alive. If he dies because you didn't try to save him after he saved you, he won't save you again.

      I feel like I must be very lucky. I only remembering doing this deliberately once and I still remember the guy. It was an elemental shaman who started pulling at the beginning of Utgarde Pinnacle in Wrath. If I tried to heal him, I got aggro and died. He learned very quickly to let the tank pull, and was great the rest of the run.

      Haven't seen that in TBC. But the sheer number of warlocks is the thing in TBC. In normal dungeons I don't mind healing their life taps. But heroics require all my focus to be on the tank because tank damage can be very spikey and it only takes 1.5 seconds for them to lose 80% of their health. I have to precast for many trash packs. Anyways, every now and then I'll have time to top off warlocks, but not often. Generally on trash pulls the tank requires my full attention.

      you can always tell as a healer the tanks that are specc'd and geared well and the tanks that aren't. some may show up with low health (which is always worrying), but take hits like a champ, and other tanks show up with tons of health, but are squishy AF. i HATE squishy, mediocre tanks that pull like they're elite. they go from one pack to the next pack, with no idea that the healer is having to work extra hard. they get too far ahead and go splat and it's always, "where's the heals brah?"

    • @alanogy
      @alanogy 2 года назад +1

      And vice versa. After warrior-tanking, I started to appreciate, as a healer, that if I didn't really have to top off my mana, I really didn't want my tank to lose rage.

    as a wise man once said " the way u are playing its cheaper to cast a Res than a heal "
    im not letting people die but there are numerous abilites like Feign Death, Ice Block, Vanish, Fade or Dmg Stop entirely and if u dont do these things maybe u just gotta die.

    Ive been doing mana tombs on my alt lately and the healers have been hit or miss. Often the worst healers are druids who think that they can just put a hot on you with multiple packs and then dps.
    Most players are not good at this game, and healers are no different. Once you get used to good healers, its very easy to know if you are just squishy, or the healer is just bad.

      Exactly. Unless it's too big. It's awfully annoying when there's a melee dps who needs as much healing as the tank for a run, and SO nice to mostly just have to heal the tank when mechanics allow. And a tank who takes the time to talk and guide a group and be a leader is a joy to heal.

  • @LeviOaken
    @LeviOaken 3 года назад +3

    So I went to Bota HC as heal, and we had a warri tank, which was kinda beefy, he was pleasent to heal. As for our Dps, that were two wl and a melee (can't remember the class), they were from the same guild and the tank and I were from different guilds. So the WL decided to have a race with their Dps-meter by spamming AOE attacks...... with a warrior tank. To make this even better, the melee manages to focus not the main target, so the tank loses aggro on three mobs, every trash group, and now I have to heal four people instead of one, causing us to nearly wipe every trash group. Halfwaythrough I had enough and said something along the lines: "Stop with AOE dmg and do singletarget dmg or I'll leave." Which they then did, and we were faster than before. So if you have ever trouble with a group, sometimes it helps to threaten them with you leaving, because as heal you're not easily replaced

    For me, the worst part of healing was having to deal with other healers.
    Whenever healing problems arose it felt like every guilds solution was "let's bring more healers" instead of "let's bring better healers," and it made raids really fucking boring having to 10 heal BWL.
    In p5 I quit the game because I was so frustrated by how many awful healers were getting carried in really good guilds. I looked at the logs of every priest in the top 20 guilds on my server, and only found 5 Priests that weren't either wearing gear worse than pre raid bis, or using spells that should pretty much never be used.
    In TBC I rolled ENH shaman and the nice thing about playing dps is if you're a shit dps there's a number that says so and you get cut, so I don't have to deal with other players in my role being turbo shit and no one noticing.

    Another annoying type of tank, is the "I'll pull 2 extra packs to make this go quicker"-tank. Loosing the small advantage in speed the group could have made with longer recovery time between pulls and if even just one wipe it is way way slower than just doing things methodically.

  • @jensenandu5477

    As a tank, my priorities are, keep the healer alive, have an eye on the healers mana, have Great gear/DEF cap/remove debuffs/move from AOE/spin away bosses, so that the healer have an easier time, and hold what i pull.
    if a DPS does a trashpull while the healer in Drinking, i will not Taunt them off, that is, if healer doesnt start panic heal them.
    DPS will use all their Cooldowns, pots and whatnot. after that fight, they have hopefully learned that if they tank ain´t moving, the healer is OOM.
    if its the healer pulling, its a sign that they want to pick up the pace a notch

    I haven't encountered most of these problems, at least not much. Voice chat seems to get through to tanks that healers are drinking, and basically all tanks wait for full mana on a boss fight. Letting dps who pull die works well, but I've only had to do that once in 15 years. Letting dps who accidentally get aggro die, it's not deliberate but it's often too instant to prevent. What I most relate to in the video is the pre-casting that's built into the game for my holy priest in TBC classic - vert definitely annoying yet necessary. Not a problem for my resto druid in retail, but then I mostly do M+ in retail and everyone seems to blame everyone else for every death or wipe there. Uninstalling solved the problem. I've always liked the challenge of healing when things go wrong. It's a sort of fun you don't usually get to enjoy so much as dps, though I've seen many a good dps prevent a wipe as the lone survivor of a boss fight over the years.

    I have had to call out in discord for a heal before as a DPS. In this particular instances on Sapphiron it was around halfway through the fight. A air phase started and I did not receive a single heal from the beginning to the end of that phase. I think that is about 15 seconds. I was using Frost pots, using shadow pots, avoiding blizzards, not getting tail swiped, and spreading properly during air phase the whole fight so I wasnt taking unnecessary damage. For our raid we had 1 to 2 healers designated to heal a group of 3 to 4 dps. My group had 2 healers, a Priest and a Druid both full T3. So, as I am dying for those 15 seconds with no abilities to heal myself as my frost pot was on CD, no HS, and bandages would be instantly interrupted I had to call out. I did get in trouble, but I would later find out my 2 healers were actually not doing their jobs correctly. The priest would regularly get in melee range of the boss so they could heal the other side of the room to boost their parses and the druid would regularly doing nothing with plenty of mana or had died from standing in a very avoidable blizzard. So I feel that in that specific instance calling out for heal was in retrospect justified.

      Can relate and I’m a healer :( as the lead healer in a raid trying to get the other healers to stay healing their group was so hard. Especially when you have that zoo animal priest that just wants “good parses”. It gets even worse when you have players like that Druid who hang around with a thumb up their ass expecting loot every raid. Healing is stressful.

    • @eladrioliii3593

      There's nothing wrong with healing multiple groups, saph is a numbers game you do genuinely want as much HPS as possible out of each and every healer rather than have them sit on their hands. WRT to air phase, it's likely that you LOS your healers and they need to move, so it's not surprising that you don't receive heals.
      Saph is really the worst possible boss to call out for heals for. From a healers perspective, the entire raids health bar is in the red, you're clicking bars every gcd, have been for the past 3 minutes and will do for the next 3 minutes - it takes up so much of your mental space that healers are the most likely to get caught out by blizzard. Whenever someone said that, I would just think "yeah you and 39 other people need healing"

    Honestly I played healer for about half of my time in TBC, as in real TBC. I was bad. I also hated it more the better I got. As I learned to balance mana better and use which heals where, I became more aware of how stressful it was when every single wipe was, in the end, partially my fault. With the exception of ridiculous pulls, if people took damage, it was me who was at fault for not balancing my abilities better. It honestly made me quit healing. I've had bad interactions as well but honestly it was just the feeling of knowing I was not up to snuff in some way, not playing perfect, mixed with ALOT of toxicity I received when I was truly bad.
    So I moved on and eventually became a mage main, and eventually a tank main once I realized exactly how much a perfect tank could make a healer's life easy. Ironically perfect was a goal I strove for, but when I learned it could never be truly achieved, I quit that too and just mained rogue because screw my group, if I do big dps and play perfect, even if things go wrong I can just vanish.
    My point is player toxicity made me incredibly stressed. Stress made healing harder the better I got. If you wonder why there are 'no good healers' you could just become the change they want to see and be nice to the baddies, and instead of verbally abusing them for 40 minutes in guild chat or whispers, tell them it's alright and help them. It takes a kind soul to be a healer and utilize the most annoying gameplay loop in the history of MMO's. Show them a little bit of respect.

    HARD disagree on the point of players asking in coms for heals. Like maybe if ur in shit guilds that would get old but a lot of the time people know there going to take incoming damage before the healer does and thus help the healer get heals cast before they would normally have and saved the player from dying. I guess it gets annoying or whatever but common now.

E hadde ikkji nok MP5, og tanks & dmg dealers tok masse dmg, då er det veldig iriterandis når følk ikkji ser på manaen, og fortsett å pulle.

    This is why in raids you should have a Druid healer because they front load heals and can really act as a buffer for other healers, a Shaman can also help with this. Anyone not watching their healers to make sure they have mana and anyone not doing this doesn’t not deserve to call themselves a Tank. Taking into consideration that tanks only have two jobs, lead the group and hold aggression and pop survivability CDs. Well third, mark mobs and direct CC. If you’re dual wielding then don’t call yourself a tank, and if someone tells you another healer could do X, then tell them to go find that healer because that isn’t going to happen with your current gear.

Many times I would login and immediately have 3 or 4 whispers wanting me to come heal in other guilds raids once people found out that I was an extremely competent healer. I also took great pride in always being top healer, who knew that blizzard made the holy spec priest just for me, LoL.
    As far as heroics dungeons went I would always tell the tanks to not stop for nothing. Nothing in wow was better than being a healer!

    Where I agree with you about this type of finger-pointing in pugs, I haven't really had this experience within my guild D: I feel really bad for healers in general due to the blamegame, but in general (at least in TBC) tanks dying is due to crushcap (in a paladins case) and crit cap not being respected on some bosses, in TBC there is little to no point healing DPS that pull aggro as 95% of the time it will just 1 shot them. I never played retail so I never know if this gets better in the future -- that is -- the healerbashing.

    I started playing healer in original TBC all the way to BFA. The whole active mana regeneration and manapool size that got removed from game kinda ruined it for me.
    Atleast olden times i could enjoy end game content as a god, never needing to drink or worry about my mana at all. Blizz sure knows how to remove everything fun from the game.
    It feels like there is no progression for healer through expansion when your manapool and mana regeneration will always be a fixed value.

    • @BenderdickCumbersnatch
      @BenderdickCumbersnatch 2 года назад +1

      Those are remnants from Vanilla when Blizzard thought about making Shaman Tanks. They had talents for defense, parry, threat, etc. It was all removed during vanilla and later expansions.
      Here is a good summary: "Blizzard specifically removed the increased threat that Rockbiter used to cause (and intentionally made it useless past level 30). They then baked lowering your threat generation into the talent that used to be Parry and is now Spirit Weapons.
      They removed Shield Specialization, changed Anticipation from +defense skill to +dodge% then later lowered the dodge from 5% to 3%.
      During an overhaul of Vanilla items they also replaced all of the Strength/Defense mail with dps stats.
      The fact that over the last 2-3 years Blizzard has repeatedly and consistently removed, lowered, or replaced all of the legacy tanking talents from Beta should show anybody very clearly that shaman are not intended to fill a tank role - and more so, are not suited to doing it outside of groups specifically created to support them in doing so: a context in which basically any class can "tank"."

    Mostly a jaded rant by someone who has had to pug too much with idiots. Healing is the first thing examined when someone dies, but that’s because it’s the easiest and most apparent thing to look at with how game events are recorded.
    I think in general this a important lesson when playing with PuGs or less invested players. Healing can be hardest role in the game by far. Killing something faster is a reasonable goal and more fun than just simply surviving to many players.
    I think what is key is playing with like minded players and knowing limits and when others are on board to test them.

      still he makes a very valid point, if there were mechanics that instead of punishing you by taking more damage it reduced dps, people would make them as flawless as possible, being a win-win. Add an enrage timer on bosses along with that mechanic and you'll see all those 2 min boss kills turn into 5 or 6 but with everyone ACTUALLY moving and shit to avoid damage + dps reduction

I don't know how many times I've been raged at for stuff that was out of my control, while at the same time almost never getting any recognition for carrying a group. I'm at least happy that the community these days seem to have made a choice to rage on tanks instead. Long story short, I never PuG in WoW these days since I exclusively play tank and healer for high end content... why anyone would play DPS in WoW eludes me, especially in retail with the wack-a-mole specs, It's a bit more fun in classic.

      @@tomandrews1429 Well I like Star wars the old republic healing the most. Otherwise i pretty much like healing in all games without a problematic community.
      I like healing in WoW, but only without addons. Using any of the addons makes the healing way too easy, it becomes sort of brainless tbh. If it wasn't for the community I would probably enjoy it way more, since the chaos of a PuG keeps it somewhat entertaining.
      Have been raiding since back in vanilla as a healer, however I would not touch a healer role in Shadowlands since I'm no longer a active raider just a tourist in the guild me and my friends created in TBC.

      As a prot pally that sometimes goes holy I never blame my healers if I'm gonna die from two hits. I have as much of a heart attack when I see my health go from 100% to 10% and back to 100% all in like 2 seconds. I tend to look at the healer's mana way more than my own and have accidentally pulled stuff when I was oom just because I'd see the healer was full of mana. I also feel like I learn the best about tanking from talking to my healers about stuff since they mitigate the mistakes everyone makes.

    • @ryuranzou
      @ryuranzou 3 года назад

      I also always look at the combat log to see what killed me. It's easier to see when your healer has a hot on you so you can even tell how fast you were hit. I remember one of my first heroics that I've done overpulling mobs and getting hit like 6 times all at once with hots on me and I could tell, because between the ticks all 6 hits were there. I asked the healer why he didn't heal me through that and had a good laugh, because it was obviously my own fault and I always make dang sure everyone knows it's not the healers fault.

    Calling out for the healers to heal the tank, especially in PUGs, often leads to heals going onto the tank and not a DPS when a medium amount of raid damage goes out. It's not uncommon to have healers just see, 50% empty bar on half the raid, and in unison, stop healing the tank to heal others.
    A random DPS calling out for a heal though, is silly.

    I have an easy solution that has added a lot of fun to the game for me. I give every dps the benefit of the doubt, and I'll give them a notice if they're attacking too fast and not managing their threat. After that, if the DPS pulls aggro I will not heal them once. I'm talking to the level of petty where they will be 10% after the pull and I won't heal them before the next pull. I think if more healers did this instead of catering to ignorant DPS, they would be forced to learn threat management. I can understand being a new player and not understanding threat, but if you do understand and just refuse to be patient, you deserve to die and deserve your repair bill.
