Which Healing Class Should You Play In Vanilla World Of Warcraft?

  • Druid? Paladin? Priest? Shaman?
    If you are just starting out on a Vanilla WoW private server and are thinking of rolling a healing class, this video will help you decide which to pick by giving you a brief overview of each class' play style.
    Because of the seemingly simple task of keeping the raid members’ health bars full, some people would suggest that healing is monotonous at best, or even downright boring.
    In this video I hope to convince you that this is not true, and give you the information you need to pick the most interesting class for your Vanilla experience.
    NOTE: There are some small errors in this video, as the script and development were very long. Check out my correction video! • Corrections To My Heal...

      yeah any mage spamming Frost Bolt in vanilla is a dead mage.. in Vanilla you had to wand for a small portion of a fight and then you would frost bolt until you crit or needed evocate... If you crit you had to back off for a couple secs so you didnt pull agro then back to it... Agro was really really really bad back then.

      Never knew mages to pull aggro as alliance. They were meh at best when starting MC. It wasn’t until being MC geared we had to worry about anything.

    I liked healing on my Holy Priest in vanilla.
    My biggest issue with it was that all DPS classes had so much more fun farming mobs easy with their AQ40 gear, nuking people in PvP.
    While as healer you were sitting on 200 spell power since all that +healing didn't aid you in killing mobs for mats.

    I wouldn't say healers are underrated or underappreciated at all honestly. I played a healer for many, many years through all levels of content and always felt appreciated. That's a huge part of why I played the role. Good DPS is pretty common, a good healer is rare. People know that.

      It's a blessing and a curse to be a pretty decent healer. It's super easy to find a guild, but you never ever get to play on your alts as a good healer has a huge impact on the raid. If you normally were to run 10 mediocre healers, you could do the same job with 7 good ones. This of course frees up spots for more DPS for a quicker run.

      Same with tanks.
      Healing is the role I never got in to, for one reason only.
      Sometimes you have to let someone die to save the group or teach them a lesson , I can't stand the guilt/feeling of failure that comes with that.
      Same because I enjoy healing for the reasons you stated, plus knowing that I'm filling the shortage.

    Just to clarify the errors in the video someone has already pointed out in the comment section.
    1. Flash of light was not affected by the casting time penalty all the way to patch 2.3 Sunwell of the BC.
    2. Druids and Priest HoTs were able to exist concurrently. The problem was that the same HoTs from different druids could not exist simultaneously where only the strongest healing effects (taking into account healing power) could exist and would replace the weaker. The weaker healing power caster would get "A more powerful spell is active". This is one of the main reasons why resto druids were not popular.
    Ps: The second problem was improved in the release of tBC. HoTs from different casters became stackable. The BC release patch also removed the 15-sec ceiling on HoTs and DoTs from spell and healing bonus. Hence, I personally love BC more than vanilla because the BC was the patch that actually lifted the gaming experience, depth of raid fights and PvP, quality of life... to a new and paramount level.

    The thing that isn't mentioned here that on retail vanilla FLASH OF LIGHT was the only spell that didn't suffer from spell diminishing effect, so actually you could've used rank 1 flash of light and before patch that removed manacost reducing items (twicked necklace in MC and quest orb that gave -25 mana on any cast) flash of light rank 1 was FREE of any manacost. and i played healing paladin through the whole retail. So you just stack +heal mostly with occasional +mp5 and crit

    Correction: Around 5:44 you're mistaking Nature's Swiftness with Swiftmend.
    Swiftmend consumes either Rejuv or Regrowth and heals for the equivalent of a full Rejuv.
    Nature's swiftness as you mentioned makes the next cast 10s or less instant.

    honestly i've been healing for 10 years, and having played vanilla on private servers I did find healing to be incredibly boring. I had a far more enjoyable time healing scholo/strat than i did anything else. UBRS was filled with overhealing just with 2 healers, and 20/40 man raids were even worse, to the point where all I really needed to do was buff others and throw the occasional heal. In reality what all the healers did was spam heals on targets desperately trying to get their heal in first. It's entirely possible we bring too many healers to our 40 man raids, but I've never healed a 40 man where I felt like there was any skill at all involved in healing anyone. Overhealing meters were far more exciting to look at as opposed to the actual healing meters.

    • @mustacio6002
      @mustacio6002  6 лет назад +2

      dannygmzz do you think that could have been improved by bringing fewer healers to the raid? I agree that the bill of my healing was racing to bring someone back before other healers, but I had plenty of opportunities in raids to make really strategic healing plays (such as using nature's swiftness and swiftmend to save a tank who was about to die) or planning positioning for difficult healing scenarios.

      That is the very same impression that I got. Guilds just brought way more healers than necessary and it turned into a whack-a-mole-contest where most of the heals had to be interrupted by the caster or went into overheal. There was one moment in my history of WoW that totally amazed me from a healer POV... It was one of those 25-man PUG-Raids in WotLK. The one you can do when you control this PvP-Zone.
      I don’t remember the exact circumstances of how it happened but we did one of the fights there with only 3 healers. And we succeeded. It was such a blast having to actually pull all the strings! All 3 of us were totally amazed by what is possible! We had between 22 and 30k HP/s in that fight... Normally I had like 10k with the usual amount of healers.

    Healing can be really fun. The challenge comes from learning to anticipate the damage. Especially on classes with really long, powerful heals like Healing Touch and Holy Light. It's amazing if you cast a heal while a player is at full health, and as soon as the fat damage comes, your heal takes the player back to full.
    Feels awesome, and players notice that kind of thing.

(white hit, white hit, white hit, white+windfury+windfury jackpot KO). In a duel the shaman will lose most of them, but when they do win one... it's usually a 1-swing 1--shot jackpot which hardly any other class can comprehend., which is bullshit, but hey... for the memes. when and if they do release pvp content showing dominating gameplay, trust they would have had to shift through dozens and dozens of games worth of content for some decent results... and only for a few clips for the most part.

    "the priest heal over time can not be cast until yours (rejuv) runs out"
    false
    you can have one of any spell type on a target. hot isn't a spell type. renew, rejuv, and regrowth are all spell types; all ranks are of one type. the most recent one will always be up. this was specifically coded out for buffs. so if you cast prayer of fortitude and there was a stronger one already on, you will get a notification of "there is a stronger one already on teh target"but that doesn't occur for any other spell.
    this means for hots you can knock off a higher quality spell. also when you cast an over time spell, it refreshes the effect and duration, it does not add to it. thus if a hot is on a target and you cast it again you will knock off the last tick of the spell at least, which can be a 20% drop in healing mana efficiency.
    but this also applies to dots. curses and magic debuffs similarly do not stack. you wont have two separate stacks of sunder armor on a target. you wont have two separate shadow word pains either.
    there is also effect conflict. sunder armor and expose armor (the rogue version) do the same thing but they do not stack.
    heals over time do stack. regrowth + rejuv + renew + pally is a great combination. together they should give about 1k hp3

    If you want the most out of your healing, play a Priest-- Deep holy is VERY powerful early on, giving you lots of bonuses to +healing, which makes you a valuable and effective healer even in bad gear, once you get some decent gear you have the option to continue deep holy for maximum healing output, or you can specc into deep discipline and trade some of that +healing from holy for more raidwide utilities and a greater mana pool, at this point you have aquired some decent gear with +healing and can still compete with other healers on the meter while being able to boost the damage/healing of allies/yourself with Power Infusion and a huge mana pool which gives you an advantage on longer encounters. Meanwhile, you can also go for a shadow/holy, shadow/disc specc once you feel comfortable with your class and have aquired enough gear to actually make this specc doable, healing wise-- Your main prio with this specc is healing, but at the same time keeping up the Shadow Weaving Debuff to increase the damage of your Warlocks, making you not only a healer, but the ultimate dps battery of Warlocks.. Trust me, they will love you.

    Saying that faster spells didn't benefit as much from +Healing is a bit off. It's true that they get less +healing, but the HPS is the same. The reason for the penalty is so you don't have a Flash of Light that heals for 1900 on 100-some mana and a Holy Light that heals for 2900 on 600-some mana.

    I've been thinking about priest or druid. And this helped me choose. It will probably be druid due to the assumption that they are not really popular. I read all comments and payed attention to the video and if druid healing is easy and laid back as it sounds I am up for it. I don't like tension and I want relaxed time in raids. There is NO penalty built into the healing coefficient.
    1.5/3.5 is 0.43, no penalty, just math.
    It does NOT exist to penalise you for using short cast spells.
    NOR is it there to encourage "harder to use" long casts.
    The sole purpose of the spell power coefficient is to balance +damage /+healing to make it equal PER SECOND.
    Think about it, if your 1.5 second heal or damage spell received the same amount as +damage as a spell taking 3.5seconds to cast, then no one with high levels of +heal/+damage would use the longer spell. It just wouldn't be optimal. The shorter the spell would always give the higher hps/dps.
    Coefficient makes the bonus equal and allows you not to be locked into using the fastest spell for the most bonus stats per second.

    Healing coefficient isn't lower because spells are "easier" or "harder" to use, its a variable based on spell cast length to limit the healing power's ability to increase healing per second. With a 3.5 second cast you get a x1 multiplier. With a 2 second cast you get the .57 multiplier. 2/3.5 = .57. Players use the slower spells for mana efficiency and the fact that in a raid environment you can pre-cast and cancel.

    You say Paladins are plate healers, and while that is technically true it was very common to see Holy Paladins wearing cloth gear due to the poor itemization of plate healing gear. They will also be spending a significant amount of time blessing the raid members since blessings are single-target only and last 5 minutes.

    • @scottw4277

      John Kendall As a paladin you get access to a raid class wide buffs with greater blessings, I have no idea why people say buffing as a paladin is aids because it can take seconds if you know who needs which buff

    • @Kreege
      @Kreege 6 лет назад +6

      Scott those class wide greater blessings did not exist until over halfway through Vanilla's lifespan(I believe it was the AQ patch that the change was implemented). Prior to AQ Pally blessings were single target 5 minute buffs.

      Sounds like he's a private server player only, Kreege. There's a _ton_ of them that think they know what vanilla was like but have no clue as to how vanilla actually progressed.
      As a Paladin in one of the guilds first breaking into MC, I could easily spend over 1/2 my time buffing. It was _minimum_ 20%, because at a 1.5sec gcd it took 60 seconds to buff 40 players with a 5 minute buff. Start adding in deaths, out of range issues, disconnects, Garr buff purging, other idiot paladins overwriting, etc and it got fucking annoying _fast._

    • @mustacio6002

      I agree that in end-game priests are the strongest overall healers.
      However, if you consider the entire life of the character from pre-raid through naxx, I think Paladin has the most juice throughout all the gear levels.
      Shaman is also very good throughout all gear levels, but its roughly on par with priest, so I think its just dependent on what you raid needs.

    • @nevermore3928
      @nevermore3928 6 лет назад

      Yes you are correct, if downranked and geared correctly priests can out heal paladins in vanilla, however paladins and preists are the top healers and I would always fight for number 1 with a really awesome paladin every raid. Downranked druid is next but pretty far behind typically unless outgearing other healers followed by Shaman far far behind. The priests in this video suck so don't go buy this raid's meter.

    You did not mention that paladin gets all the mana back every time any healing crits because they have a talent called illumination, for my understanding paladins get by far the most spell crit from all classes from intellect, so that makes them even more mana efficient. The 2 hour Onyxia buff is very potent for a paladin healer because it gives 10% more spell crit, that just means 10% more free heals. Also you are guaranteed to crit a heal on demand using divine favor and may cast a instant heal while moving with holy shock that you can also combine with divine favor to always get a critical heal.
    You were talking about priest bubbles, but Paladins can also cast blessing of protection to save spell casters from dying in tight spots making them immune to any physical damage for 12 seconds. The fact they can wear plate armor is not the main reason they were/are good at healing main tanks, usually holy paladins didn't even have plate armor to wear as a healer in vanilla, most pre-raid bis gear was leather and cloth. They had talents not to lose casting time when taking damage, they could give different auras to nearby players, like more armor or fire resistance to the tanks, and have skills like divine shield/blessing of protection, lay on hands to survive long periods of time when there is trouble. Getting all the different blessings was the final reason it was wise to include 4-6 paladins in any 40-man raid.

    • @Joey_1999
      @Joey_1999 5 лет назад

      people way overestimate stacking crit on an hpala. its only really semi useful for very long fights like twin emps. for the most part flash of light is so efficent you can just stack +healing gear. for example wild growth shoulders are on par with palas tier 3. sounds crazy but if you have brilliant mana oil/mana pots you wont go oom even without crit stacking. just your natural crits will come in and you'll just heal more because of +healing gear.

      @@mikevlegels1220 Don't get me wrong, regrowth is a great spell, short cast time, extremely powerful. :) With the +50% crit talent in resto tree, it can be interesting to use it at lower ranks. Only issue is that it's quite mana inefficient, moreover the following hot might go into overheal since your target will probably be topped off by other healers.

    Do you have something similar for HoTs? There is no casting time for Rejuvenation and Regrowth applies an additional HoT. How do you account for casting time and penalty? At the moment I simply assume it's 1.5 sec cast time.

    Help me pick 2 classes to play.
    I used to play vanilla and mostly warrior and shaman. a little bit warlock, rogue.
    I felt quite useless in raids as non-tank warrior, and it was quite boring tbh. Shaman a bit more fun, I did damage and healed as elemental but was forced to be healbot even though I felt like I wanted to be more useful. Warlock seems ok but is mage more useful? and rogue is ok to play, I would like to try out full sublety-build.
    I want a character to raid/dungeon with premade teams with. One that is useful to the team without being forced to spec a specific way, if healer someone with a bit more tools. Will probably pvp atleast a little when max level.
    I want a character to raid/dungeon/grind solo play with, so should be able to solo pvp, preferebly a ranged character, would prefer a class that would survive being jumped on in world pvp, and the class should not be unwanted if I look for a group.

  • @morthim
    @morthim 6 лет назад

    out of curiosity, why would you not want to keep max hots on your tank? it also is safer in terms of threat.
    there is also a meme of "wait until third sunder" but your tank will be dead by then if you don't heal them. especially by hots as they effectively act like bonus armor or virtual health pool.

    • @mustacio6002
      @mustacio6002  6 лет назад

      morthim you can keep hots on the tank, but two things become an issue. Even with a max rank renew and a max rank rejuvenation on the tank, he will still be healed for less than 1k per tick.
      It is fine to use them, but tanks rely on avoidance (block, dodge, parry) as well as mitigation (raw armor) to avoid damage. Because of this your HoT might tick several times without doing any healing, or your tank might take two crushing blows in quick succession, something than rejuvenation cannot compensate for.
      In those cases, it is fine to have/keep a rejuvenation on your tank, but keeping heals cooking up on him is far more important for keeping him alive.
