  • My speedpaint arrived today! I've never used contrast paints or speedpaints before, so this is my honest first impression.
I'll be using speedpaints to paint a full 40 piece set of undead mermaids! Check out my channel to watch every brushstroke. Grab a mini of your own and chill and paint.

For a lighter brown, you can mix the paint with speedpaint medium to make it more transparent - this is the key to making speedpaints lighter, because they rarely contain white pigments - white pigments makes paints opaque which isn't what you want with these - so instead you rely on the undercoat to make it lighter by making the paint itself more transparent. Or you can use Ruddy Fur or Hardened Leather for a more reddish hue which feels a bit lighter.
Interesting tidbit, but speedpaints tend to work almost exactly like Overlay layers in Photoshop or other paint programs - you can see this by taking a photo, opening it in PS, creating a new layer, setting it to Overlay then blocking in an area with a single color. This actually helps a lot with figuring out what colors to use with these before putting the paint on the model :)

Thanks for the advice! I've been experimenting with mixing the brown with the lighter colors like Peachy Flesh and Bone and its been pretty successful in dialing down the brown.
The overlay idea is super interesting and I could do that easily in Premier Pro...

What paints did you use for the zhenital highlights?

For all the drybrushing on the channel I've been using a cheap hobby grey (Artist's Loft) and the Vallejo black and white primer!

Ah I see these are different than other colors 🧐🧐
I'm used to oil paint on canvas but I started playing HeroQuest and it really bothers me that the miniatures aren't painted so I ordered the speedpaints out of the blue 😆 is it still possible to layer with these?🧐

I've never tried it... but honestly, I don't think it would work. Any layering would only make it darker since the paint is translucent.

@@chillminipainting I see, but if you paint for example a portrait you most likely would also use a few translucent layers on top of each other 🤔 I would guess that you can use that for gradients.
Gonna try that out once I get the paint 😁

@@rowennightfall1369 if you use the same speedpaint over the same spot multiple times it does get more saturated and therefore darker... lemme know how it goes!

@@chillminipainting okay 😁 but it takes a few days the speedpaints weren't on stock when I ordered. Shop is sending them out when they get their refill

U can layer them, but it's an different effect. Reminding more of an filter or glaze. The colour U choose as the last step will give the biggest influence, but u still get influence from the colour below (a bit like with different understanding). Some edge highlights or light drybrush easily enhance the result further (and fix some pooling if u screwed up somewhere). Give each layer proper drying time.

Great job. Speed paints/Contrast paints have a learning curve. Some need thinning down like the brown, some work well off the pot. Looking forward to more

I seriously, seriously encourage you to MIX these colors. You can achieve a MUCH more cool, unique green color by doing so. Experiment. This green color by itself is not great, but once you start mixing a lot, you get a MUCH better result.
