SLAP CHOP with The Army Painter 2.0 Speedpaint - Let's Paint a D&D Party! Part 6
We are BACK and continuing to paint with Army Painter 2.0 Speedpaint. In this series we are going to paint a 6 figure D&D party, with a common theme. We are trying to get used to the new paints, and testing out how the paints work on regular 25-32mm sized minis.
I'm thrilled to be back painting, thanks to everyone for their patience! I'll be slap chopping a bunch of interesting, one off minis soon, so stay tuned for more!

      I've thought about that. I'll definately try it at some point. But I'd be worried the model would get really dark, it's already on the dark side with the drybrushed undercoat.

    I stopped painting detailed eyes after watching Tabletop Minions video on why painters shouldn't paint eyes because in reality, you wouldn't really see that detail from that distance. TBH, most painted eyes look creepy because they're too large. Instead, he suggests putting shadows in that area, so that's what I do for heroes and humanoids. However, I do like to paint demons and enemies eyes a solid color such as yellow or red.

    I love watching videos like this - they give me tips, color schemes, and other thoughts as I approach my own. I particularly love them when they are painting something I have or can get. So, when I found this little series I was excited. Especially because you're so measured in your approach, honest in your own self-reflection, and ended up with solid looking results. But as I started to follow along with my own copies of these minis, I realized you don't actually show all the colors you used. In some cases, they're just there. For example, Brent's skin - when did you paint that? What color? And the other armor - you only talked about the bronze, but there's obviously other metallic colors you used. Would it be possible to just list out all the paints you used as part of the description?

    • @chillminipainting
      @chillminipainting 5 месяцев назад

      Thanks for the comment! It's so cool to know someone is following along so closely. I just wanted to share my painting with folks. To answer your question about the colors, the skin is peachy flesh and the metallic is broadsword silver. I think for this particular video I didn't include it because I accidentally painted it out of frame 😅 getting this stuff on film is trickier then I expected. That's a great suggestion though! I'll add all the paints used in the descriptions.

    The one thing I'll say about slapchop (with army painter speed paints) that I don't like, is that the black basecoat almost seems too strong in some areas (faces etc...). Ive begun to base coat in gray and then highlight with white. It makes makes the model a bit brighter and less "muddy", which I like.

    I think part of it is managing expectations. We tend to be our own worst critics. Other painters’ minis look great, our own suck. Though some people are truly amazing, a lot of it is also in making it look better with editing (for YT/Insta). It’s been said by more than one RUclipsr, it’s not just me being paranoid. To improve your slapchop, I think you should look at the underpainting. Someone in your comments said to use gray and then white, and that will help. But also inspect the underpainting before you start painting. Make sure it looks good before you add speedpaints. Dana Howl has a great video about it (it’s her first video). That said, slapchopping produces slapchop results. Try speedpainting a mini that’s primed only white or light gray (you probably have already). Then place it next to a slapchopped one. You may find you love the idea of slapchop more than its results. But if you want to slapchop but want crisper results without layering afterwards, you could try doing exactly what you’re doing and then adding a drybrush highlight. Doing that will also mitigate some of the splotchiness that tends to come with speedpainting larger/flat surfaces. Then you can tie it together with a wash/shade if you like. This will probably also make the mini feel “more painted”. If you try it, see if you see what I mean 😁 If you want to layer after speedpainting, check out Andy at Mediocre Hobbies. He’s the king of reasonable effort and really great results 👍 I’m just one guy, but for me 20 minutes is the around the longest I’ll watch of a “random” painting video, that I watch out of curiosity or for inspiration. I’ll watch longer ones for research purposes however. So your really long videos are the reason I haven’t subscribed. That’s not to say you shouldn’t make those, however. You should make the videos that you want to make, otherwise YT will most likely become a burden. The best of luck with painting and YT!

      Lots of great advice in there - thank you for being so thoughtful and thanks for watching! I've gotten so many good ideas from folks about how to approach models with speedpaint. It's too cold to 3D print in Canada right now, but I'm looking forward to getting some fresh models and giving different undercoats a try. I've actually got my next video scheduled for tomorrow and in that one I do some drybrush highlighting on top of the slapchop. It's a bigger model, so the drybrush looks great! For a smaller model like these ones I would probably lean towards an edge highlight instead... But I'm realizing that slapchop by itself doesn't work for some color schemes! At least I haven't been able to make it work yet. Also thanks for the insight on the length of videos! The long ones were the first things I did and I won't really be doing that length anymore. You're right, its too long to expect anyone to sit and watch the whole thing. I'll be trying to keep it in the 10-20 range for the most part.

    As others have said, speed painting/contrast painting is designed for passable fast "slap chop" game ready mini's. ... Try using another paint line and experiment with glazing and blending. A good way to start that is to paint on some cheap minis/busts and experiment a little than do it on your miniatures.. that means no slap chop. ... I also suggest that the best method is to combine techniques so you slap chop some parts of the mini and use a light gray flat prime on others to build up with more traditional painting methods. I also start my faces and metallics with a white painted on prime (no zenithol highlighting). Suggested channels to watch for tips: "Lila Mev - The Mini Witch" (for painting technique) and "Ninjon" (for how to do fast but good)

    • @chillminipainting
      @chillminipainting 6 месяцев назад

      Thanks for those tips and recommendations! I think with a few days to reflect, I'm not playing to the speedpaints' strengths. They do a much better job on minis with a bit more variety in color and more blues, greens, yellows... as opposed to three shades of leather brown. Slap chopping by itself isn't the way for a paint job like this!

    • @LB_adventurer
      @LB_adventurer 6 месяцев назад

      @@chillminipainting Lila has a great series of videos for "getting started". And frequently reflecting back on the basics is the best way to improve. If I'm being honest, I more often go with about 90% slap chop and only use 10% (or less) on more advanced techniques. Mini's are really small and at even 2 feet distance you can't see much of a difference in details. I only use minis for gaming, I'm not an artist so I'm not making show pieces. But if you love painting, than I suggest scaling up the models and check out Lila and some of the other channels out there for show ready stuff.

I think I can see the "texture" of the print in the close ups, or am I hallucinating? Final thought: I also struggle with eyes, but a few years ago I realized that it's ok not to paint them: just shading the eye sockets will give better results at a glance than poorly painted eyeballs -- try it, and you may be surprised!

Re: the skin, maybe Speedpaints just aren't suitable for skins? Hi there, I think the skin/brown being flat issue is unfortunately a consequence of slapchop. You're adding skin tones over the grey/black areas which is going to dull down the skin to a colour somewhere between grey/orange/brown. Slapchop is great for creating variations in light and dark, but the use of greys and blacks desaturates the colours of the paint. Unfortunately, the best way to stop this would be to base the skin areas in a more saturated darker tone, something like a red/purple, and then drybrush white over, which will then get covered in the skin tone speed paint, However I appreciate that this then adds a whole basecoating step to slapchop which will impact the speed with which you can knock out painted models. The other option is to paint the mini with a slapchop method but then paint the skin (and any other areas you're not happy with) the "traditional" way of layering.

    Are you priming black then drybrushing white? If so, try prime black, heavy dry brush in a medium (dungeon/ash) grey (about as heavy as you've done the white on this model), then finish with a lighter dry brush in matt white. Looks like the model may be overall too white? Worth a shot. Also, treat yourself to a tube of UHU glue. Put a blob on there, use a cocktail stick to "string" it up to the weapons, leave it to half dry, then paint the glue with a blood colour.

    The skin on the first model looks like the speed paint hasnt really covered very well. This could be because the white is too stark for the speed paint to tint properly. I would suggest a 2nd coat of speed paint to get more coverage or alternatively zenithal with a warmer colour than just stark white. Another thing to try is to undercoat completely in a warm white, dont slap chop at all and see how the speed paints cover a solid colour and make the shadows rather than the zenithal making the shadows. If you want some inspiration an awesome youtuber is Sonic Sledgehammer Studio, simple schemes, no complex layering or highlighting but very effective.

    Hey man, looks great. The point of "speed" paints is you get to play with painted minis. Stay chill n paint on🎉 Liked the run time, like the mistake commentary. Could even go 8 min with 1min of it being pictures You rock

    Trow a wash over the shin after you paint it, then highlight/ dry brush with a bright white maybe toned w yellow. Then recoat? Might work, I'm not into the 2.0 line or I'd give it a shot for ya. Try it on failed print maybe

      I've been considering highlighting, will probably make a video about it soon... thanks for watching my friend!
