  • I'm continuing to paint with my new Army Painter 2.0 Speed paint. This is the 3RD troll of a three miniature set and I'm seeing some huge improvement in the results. In this video I show how I levelled up my speed painting
    I'll be using speed paints to paint a full 40 piece set of undead mermaids! Check out my channel to watch every brushstroke. Grab a mini of your own and chill and paint.

I look forward to seeing you paint other projects in the future and I gotta say, your slap chop drybrushing skill alone is a talent unto itself and worth a watch. 👍 and Merry Christmas.

    Wow! You are absolutely right. "Thinning" those colors out with lighter paints really adds a lot more dynamism than Army Painter Speed Paints original recipe.

    Hey! Lovely video, thanks for sharing your experiences!
    I am glad I see a video about Speedpaints dilution, because I experienced exactly the same issue when I started with them: I feel the dark tones have too much pigmentation on slap chop if used straight out the bottle (as opposed to being used on pure white primer), and I found that diluting is an effective solution to get nice depth without losing the pop of the colours. I use the army painter medium, usually 3:1 medium:colour, but I like your idea to dilute with other lighter colours 👍

    I find it intriguing that 90% of the models i see on youtube, that are "slapchaopped" are larger 32mm or larger models. I would argue the process is infinitely easier with larger models.

    • @chillminipainting
      @chillminipainting  7 месяцев назад

      100% I agree! Larger minis are easier to paint no matter what the style of painting in my opinion, and easier to film too. I've got tons of 28-32mm minis that I am going to try out speed paint on as well!

    • @GabrielBishop
      @GabrielBishop 7 месяцев назад +1

      Ive painted a bunch of minis now with speedpaint2 it matters more the tightness of the details that need different color. Best if you can hit the hard to reach first imo, especially if you can hit them again with a thinner adjacent color and let them mix

    • @tp6498
      @tp6498 7 месяцев назад +3

      I've used speedpaints and contrast paints on a bunch of my 28mm and 32mm miniatures and what I've noticed is that while you are correct, it is easier to paint a larger scale miniature, I find it's not so much the scale of the mini that determines the overall effectiveness of those paints but the amount of detail that is sculpted into the mini. Lots of folds and stitches in clothing. Wrinkles, scars and well defined muscles in skin. Thick, matted fur and flowing hair etc...These are the characteristics to look for in a miniature if your going to use these types of paints and achieve the full effect that the "slap chop" method can give you.

      I disagree, I use it for both 28mm and 14mm models, however I use a zenithal with an airbrush rather than dry brushing (mainly because I’m rubbish at dry brushing and usually mess it up) it’s great for the 14mm tabletop minis as all of the shading and colouring is taken care of with just the touch of some speedpaint where it would have been a bunch of fiddly work using the layering approach. I think that most RUclipsrs use larger ‘minis’ because it’s easier to film and show off the work. There’s a challenge for the chill guy, paint some daddy models ;)

    I watched your previous videos when you made them, and it's amazing to see how much you improved each time.
    The wood of the guitar from the first one looks so boring.
    With the 2nd model the wood looks great.
    Also the skin has more contrast on the 2nd one.
    And the newest one has even more contrast with the skin.
    Thinning seems to help a lot in your case.
    I do like how soft your dry brushing is, but I think it might lack the very deep shadows.
    The lack of darker shadows might cause the flatness of the first 2 tries.
    And then diluting the paint, helps to counteract that.
    Still don't have the paints, and therefore no experience.
    But that's just what I'm thinking.

    • @chillminipainting
      @chillminipainting  7 месяцев назад

      Thanks so much! Maybe as I keep painting I can find that balance where the paint is thin enough that the highlights stay bright without sacrificing the shadows.

  • @peterlageri4177
    @peterlageri4177 7 месяцев назад +1

    2:08 "and the second way it helped is it thinned out the paint so there isn't as much pigment compared to the medium of the speedpaint" I don't quite understand that one. Is it because the Zealot Yellow has less pigment compared to the Green Orcskin but both have the same amount of Speedpaint medium so all in all there is more medium in the mix all in all?

    • @chillminipainting
      @chillminipainting  7 месяцев назад +1

      Good question! And I'm not an expert so I might be using the wrong language... For the lighter color paints, there is less color in a drop of paint compared to the darker colors. The lighter colors are way more translucent. So if you mix them, the lighter color things down the darker colors.
      Does that make sense?? I hope so! Lol

    • @chillminipainting
      @chillminipainting  7 месяцев назад +1

      The pigment is the color mixed in with the medium, and the lighter colors have much less pigment then the darker ones!

    your comment about diluting the speedpaint because you don't want the dark recesses is a bit confusing. you said they zealot yellow:ork flesh mix was not diluted at all before that? and what do you mean about diluting specifically - are there ratios i should be going for? with medium? water? (ps really like your channel btw - a crash course on how you do that drybrushing would also be ace)

    • @chillminipainting
      @chillminipainting  7 месяцев назад

      Fair question! Colors like green or brown have a lot of color pigment in them compared to something like the yellow. So when I say I'm diluting the paints, I mean I'm mixing in paints with less pigment. I could also just dilute the paint with the speedpaint medium!
      With this particular model that's already drybrushed, I can get away with it because I don't need the colors to pool in the recesses of the models and darken them - they are already black!
