When it comes to actually getting models done, speedpaints have been amazing. I know the effect isnt as nice as a well done traditional mini, but it gets minis on the tabke I'm happy with.
I love my speed paints and it has been a big help to get minis in the table.. my backlog was huge when I was using only opaque paints, but after I acquired the army painter speed paint 2.0, my painting ratio increased a lot. Definitely good enough for me quality wise, and I get so much more done.
As someone who was a traditional canvas acrylic artist, and dabbled in oil paints, I feel like learning mini painting is increasing my ability to understand both acrylic and oil painting better. Thanks for all the tips!

I'm a Vallejo/Formula P3 sort, here, when it comes to painting. I learned with P3 and am familiar with its properties and find it's good for making glazes and washes with. Vallejo is just an excellent all around brand for opaque, washes, and glazes, I find as well. I finally took the plunge and grabbed a few Army Painter Speedpaint 2.0 bottles to mess with and I'll see what I think about them once I get them opened up and going. I always enjoy the information you provide in every video as usual, Miss Lyla!
I've seen many video of speed paints being used and they have gotten pro levels of painting done, it's about know how speed paint works plus adding in some dry brush and layering. Yes they are a all in one paint but it's also knowing how to use them. I'm a nub at painting but I'm trying and looking at videos. Speed paint works for me because I don't have to much time to paint because of my work
The way you paint is amazing for me, I can really see that you know where you will end up. At the beginning things look a bit odd, but the end results is always something that only an artist could get. Amazing! Thank you very much
This is a wonderful breakdown of which paints are "best" for which use cases. And not in a specific brand light! Thank you very much for the informational content!
This is good, but I'd have also had a thick vs. flowy vs. creamy, matte vs. satin vs. gloss, and opaque vs. translucent uses breakdown. It is more on the Art side vs. tabletopper side, but that's how I've been considering paint nowadays.
Though manufactured washes are very reliable and handy, you can also create your own washes with non-wash paints (except contrast) by diluting with water and adding medium if needed. Washes have a lot in common with glazes but have a lower viscosity so they spread more and get into those crevices nicely.
A basic set of about 12 can do you good... I came in as a watercolorist/fine artist... Once I learned some techniques I learned how fun painting minis and sculptures is.
I'm trying glazes for a couple weeks now, what a challenge to get right with craft paints 😢 here in brazil speed paints are waaaay too expensive, even vallejo or citadel are luxury itens lol but your channel and ppl like you always have a tip or insight that help us get better at the hobby ❤
Maybe your next video should be along the lines of How I learned to use Contrast Paints properly, if you can get past that slopping them on with a mop technique they can be some of the most useful paints you'll have in your kit. One tip I can give for cloaks, robes and coats using contrasts is apart from not flooding them, is lay them horizontal to dry, not stood vertical and it will spread the excess all over the folds and not pool at the bottom.
Hi Lyla, many thanks for the great break down! I haven't painted a figure since 1979 (!). Oops, I built a vinyl Screamin brand Werewolf ~ '91-'92; Milliput is your friend. All of these new techniques were intimidating until now. Subbed.
there is easy technique to make glazes from opaque paints. Just dilute them with water and add some gel medium. With this method you could actually make transparent glaze-like paint with viscosity of normal paint (or actually with any viscosity you like)
Also contrasts make great glazes over normal paints, think of them as a filter. I use contrasts/speedpaints less and less as basic cover over zenithal, as I’m not satisfied how they work in shadowed areas and their interactions with grey (desaturation).
With Speedpaints/Contrast paints you want Black Primer > Gray Zenithal > White Drybrush. If you lean into TMM it's a good time to basecoat your metallics and give them a wash. That's what worked for me. Add more highlights and edge highlights and you up to a great result in a tight timeframe and low skill level. But be aware that this painting method does NOT develop painting skills other than Dry Brush. Great for big armies done quickly.
See I prefer contrast, speed paint or instant colors over a very light grey or yellow primer with no sloppy chippy or zenithal. They make it look too dirty or grimy even for grim dark with little control over the final product.
@@jasoncarpenter5974 Zenithal and Slop Chop makes your models dirty ? If by Grimy you mean patches and coffee stains, that's what Citadel Contrasts usually do. Try Army Painter Speedpaints, they don't have that effect and are especially good when you apply them on a slop chop base.
I have found the same thing. I'll do a grey basecoat, black line only the very darkest areas and drybrush very light grey and then apply a grey range speed paint. but I also am still experimenting with color priming or base coat with a lighter than normal base coat color and drybrushing with a very light color then finishing with speed paint. This gets rid of the too white high lights that speed paint look.
@@maverickman6486 yeah, nothing can beat rattlecan Black into Grey Zenithal, into white Drybrush in terms of speed. I'v done 48 infantry models in 5 hours, from zero to tabletop standard.
I've branched out from my model and game colours and bought opaque and inks. All Vallejo. You mentioned opaque (which I think are like regular paints but pigment heavy). But what about inks? I figure that the colour is the liquid so I can water down well to make them washes? So far washes are my favourite aspect of painting miniatures. Great for shadows and unifying.
Very often I hear “lost shadows after dry brush” then “so I apply a wash” then “ dry brush again to pick out the highlights lost” so the speed paint is a redundant layer at this point 😛
I'm a little curious as to why you say Citadel and Army Painter opaque paints are more difficult to work with? Is it because they are thicker out of the bottle and require you to work out how to thin your paints properly right from the start?
I'm a new miniature painter. I really like your video. I need some advice what buy as a new painter. I'm looking for a set or something. Can you give some advice what to buy. I would really appreciate thank you
I really appreciate this video. While it's intent was to clarify paint types, it really made some techniques click for me. When you make your glazes, are you just using water or actual glaze medium?
Good video! As I have little time, I'm always looking to optimize my painting (for tabletop pieces, I don't do display pieces) and remove unnecessary steps. As such, I have to ask: why go through the trouble of using a contrast/speed paint first for the feathers, if you are later going to drybrush over it and then apply a wash? It seems like the contrast paint step is wasted. Wouldn't "base color + drybrush + wash" (AKA "the traditional method") yield pretty similar results?
(I realize display pieces such as the one you're demonstrating on benefit more from subtle effects; but were this a tabletop gaming piece, wouldn't what I say above be true?)
Are you wicking excess wash off the brush by touching it softly to a paper towel or sponge before applying the glaze? In my first few years I struggled due to missing this small detail. Give it a try.
Great video! Just as a discussion question, genuinly interested, as to your comment do you consider the use of speedpaint/contrast paints not an artform?
@LylaMev Art is so hard to label, it depends so much on the painters experience and just as much on the people seeing and experiencing it. It's a interesting topic for discussion. Thank you for your reply. Again, great video.
Using speedpaints will eventually lead to a plateau and require the combining of opaque paint and eventually glazing etc. Speedpaints are an aspect of miniature painting and a very useful tool for the toolbox. In the same way you can't just go point and shoot with a camera and become a great photographer. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
I don't disagree. I was asking about a line being drawn to what is Art and what isn't. Everyone's interpretation of that will be different. It's all in the eye of the beholder.
