I have spent a lot of time and money collecting various acrylics, oils, acrylic and alcohol inks, powder pigments, pastels and acrylic paint pens whilst preparing to setup my own hobby channel. But the thing I have invested the most in is creating my own line of paints, contrast paints, washes (oil and acrylic) and effects paints. My channel will be focused on budget DIY solutions for the hobby sphere. Creating my own paints allows me to perfect and tailor my paints to my liking.
Paints are one of those things that you know you don't need but when you see a brand you haven't tried or a color you like but from a diffent brand you just want to try them and getting one or two isn't satisfying enough Makes me feel better about my paint racks though This was a fun video :)
I feel like Miniac used to very deliberately ape Alton Brown's style. Pulling out illustrative charts and giving a basic overview of the physical processes in things like airbrushing. I kind of miss that, but I guess there's only so much you can go over in that style.
The best thing my FLGS did was to bring in ProAcryl, specifically the Ninjon and VincieV custom colors - seriously, you guys are amazing. PS, I'll be cosplaying as Darrell at Adepticon next year.
The more paints I own, the worse I feel about not painting as much as I should. This is a good enough reason for me to buy more and more paints! And I'm jealous of your 1700+ pretty paints!
Two Thin Coats are my current go to for almost anything I'm painting unless I have a pro acryl equivalent. Great colors similar to citadel but in a much better dropper bottle and a better price for what you get. I have wanted to try AK paints but they are not easy to track down here in Maine.
Michigan Toy Soldier has the AK paints AND they often have weekend sales. Might be good to wait for one of those sales and use that new coupon. They also have a ton of art books and other tools.
And I thought I was a huge paint goblin . Seriously, I love collecting paint, any color that is pretty, I want it. We are like dragons and paint is our treasure hoard. Also nice new tat
Scalecolor heavy body paints are actually my favourite mini paints. I do a lot of colour mixing and they have the best magenta I've found. I'm honestly at the point where Id rather thicker paints. It just works better for how I paint. and for airbrushing I still go back to army painter paints.
I love using ScaleColor Artist paints. They have amazing matte finish, lovely colours, and they mix nicely. And the biggest advantage for me is that I don't have to shake them. I injured my hand a few years ago and if I overwork it, it hurts and I can't paint. Not having to shake bottles (and things like vibrating shakers are not any better for me) extends the time I can paint by a lot. So I almost exclusively paint with the ScaleColor Artist paints and don't mind having to thin them down. It helped me learn what consistencies I like for painting.
I absolutely love the AK 3rd gen, Ive been transitioning to them from Vallejo Model Color, only downside is that the dropper part of the bottles almost always cracks and makes a mess. Some vibrant colors for the new Vallejo Game Color are pretty cool, and the Xpress line although small in range, is great and dries very mat. Vallejo also has a less known range, Mecha Colors, intended for airbrush, but the steel metallics work wonder by brush, their primmers are nice too, a bit satin. You have some hidden gems too in the Vallejo Airbrush paints, such as a Black Metallic.
AK 3rd gem, Kimera and scale 75 are all people need. I legit vouch by that. AK 3rd gen is like other stuff but ten times better. kimera is just very solid for what it does and scale 75 is different yet excellent when mastered, beyond anything imo. (scalecolor i'm talking about mainly).
As someone who use Scalecolor artist range in almost every project i like that i know what consistency im getting every time and dont have to violently shake my bottles before every use.
I have the full range but have barely touched them yet. The first try was a bust so went back to ProAcryl for now. I need to sit down and work with them and learn to use them. My main goal with them was to actually use them thicker and go for more of a sketch/"painterly" style, but also need more practice for that. Also they have some amazing colours!
@@derekgarcia3069 they definitely require a little more work to make right. I would watch some Craftworld Studio videos they are big users of that range.
I cannot second this enough. Scalecolor's Artist Smooth range are the only paints I own (including Warcolours, Citadel, Golden, AK, Vallejo, and Daler Rowney) that transfer/blend so smoothly right out of the tube that it's almost like I can feel it *through* the brush (in a good way!) They're like painting with butter (again, in a good way!) Their only downside is that you can't-or at least shouldn't attempt to-airbrush them.
@@derekgarcia3069give them a try. I find the best way to use them is to 'massage' your thinner or water into the paint on wet palette. They have a lot of fine pigment and this needs to get flowing.
I can so relate to this. I’m still a fledgling painter so I’m still building up my paint collection. one of my other passions is collecting fountain pens so I’ve accrued inks that’ll last me for generations already. Purples are nice
Fellow paint hoarder here. I find myself migrating towards the Scale 75 Artist colours more and more. Yes, they have to be thinned down, but BUT!. If you are like me and only have about 30min per day for painting, they hold up SUPER well on the wet palette. I load my palette for the week on Monday, and by Sunday, they are just the right consistency for those final glazes. No other brand comes close in this regard. It also helps that they mix well due to the limited pigments.
I've got a lot of paints, but they're almost all Reaper. Where my hoarding comes in are the minis with around 14K total. (Been collecting since 1972.) A lot of old lead in on my shelves.
This does make me feel better about my (much smaller) paint collection! Even if you don't use them, I think it's still pretty cool to have as a collection.
I'm so glad, that me and my friend aren,t the only ones who buys every paint range they can. Also glad to hear a good words about AK paints and Creed Camo contrast
this is one of those areas that I can relate to.... I probably have too many paints... but I do enjoy trying new paints and seeing how they do... and thanks for making me feel a bit more normal...
Pretty much my same favorite Pro Acryl paints, except for ivory and magenta. I love sneaking in magenta when I can, especially in contrast to the jade. But ivory was the first bottle of their paint I needed to replace, I tend to use it instead of white 90% of the time I want white. I also found myself using the transparent orange a lot more often than I expected.
I feel like I would get decision fatigue when trying to paint with this many paints. Which is why I've given away 90% of my paints. I kept my inks and artist paints for airbrushing, and a set of craft paints for dry brushing or terrain making. All of my other paints are artist oil paints. Oil paints have made me enjoy painting because acrylic paints were not super fun (if you aren't having fun painting, try oils. they are so much fun to paint with).
Ninjon never less than watchable. You can tell the confidence he has in the interest of his audience by the way he gets his full sponsor messaging done before he even gets going. And he's right.
I aspire to your paint collection and I say that unironically. I love getting more paints, I love trying new brands, seeing how they work, what I like and don't like. I don't mind paying the cash for it, cause I've probably spent far more on ordered food that arrived cold or bland, or went to the cinema to see movies I didn't like. So yeah I'll drop a few quid on a bottle of paint to try it out! Right now I use a spectrum of acrylics, enamels, and oils. Inks, and fluorescents. Such a broad selection from different brands, to produce what I like to see on my minis.
You sir, are not alone. I have at least 6 different paint ranges ( a few here , a whole range there etc.), and a large-ish double door closet filled with models( mostly Tank models as that was the last obsession). I will say , 3d printing has saved me from being buried under a "Tsunami of Grey". Now I just have to save up for a 10Tb RAID server to hold all the "Digital Grey" that I have. I think I still have a kidney left...
The AK Interactive "Anime Figures" set is a great starter for their paints, grab some of that Vallejo Aluminium and you're good to go for a lot of painting. Though I do love the Vallejo Express colours: Cardinal Purpple, Gloomy Violet, Plasma Red and Mystic Blue and my Citadel Garaghak's Sewer and Black Legion are always at hand. I'm also a big fan of Reaper's Polished Bone, Aged Bone, Blonde Traid set and Fair Flesh traid, the last of which works great with GW's Seraphim Sepia. And I definitely don't have your paint problem, but then I haven't collected sets because someone sent them to me either. :)
I know you have to be my brother from another mother I have a similar collection just no tubes of paint or citadel Love your videos with their unique approach. Thank you for all that you do
@Ninjon - Would love to know more about your paint racks! Especially those that would fit Reaper / AK. They look like 3d print. I cut alot of PVC pipe to create vertical storage. Cheap but gets old. Thanks for your Proacryl set btw. They have more paints in their range hitting retail real soon so you'll need more room for them. I do love P3 but only have an armful. Just got some army painter. Not what I expected and dissapointed. I don't think I will ever be a speedpainter!
No matter white paints you buy, get pro-acryl's Bold Titanium White (and Titanium White Artist ink for good measures). It seriously is the best white paint in acrylic form you can get
The biggest upside to tube paints is that you don't get air into your paint when used. Bottle paint will dry in the pot faster and faster the less paint remains. If i had the option all my paints would come in tubes since most paints needs to be thinned anyways.
I’m in the same boat. Phased out my citadel colors for army painter’s entire range (because they were cheap and in a dropper), only to start phasing that out for Vallejo.
You’ve been uploading minutes before my newborns late night feed (aus time) and it’s been the perfect thing every time. It helps that the videos are quality!
7:45 Slightly off topic but I've been eyeing this rack that your P3s are on for a while now. I may have to get one now that I've seen it filled with paints... or maybe two!
This makes me feel slightly better about my overflowing paint racks. I'm a sucker for Scale 75 and AK, I'm currently using the Scale 75 Artist acrylics on a little Butterfly-Frog and I love how easily and smoothly they mix.
Thanks for the great videos and sharing your love and knowledge of painting and paints. I have both Two Thin Coats sets, a bunch of Army Painter, Vallejo, Pro Acryl (including yours and Vince's sets), a few reaper paints, war colours, huge miniatures, GSW and AK interactive. My total is no where near yours, but I have a fairly eclectic collection. My favorites right now are Two Thin Coats and Pro Acryl. Honestly have not tried the War Colours or AK interactive yet, bought them for a specific project that has been printed and primed, but I have not started painting yet. I gave all my Citadel to my wife for her to use because I cannot stand the paint pots and don't want the hassle of transferring them.
Hi I'm Vin and also a paint hoarder. I have hundreds, and hundreds of paints. And funnily enough our opinions are very similar, but I personally adore the Scale 75 range, and the speed paint 2.0 range. But my personal favorites are Ak 3.0 and Proacryl.
I keep a spare, unopened pot for all my paints, so if I run-out mid session I know there's always a replacement at hand. Now, I exclusively use Kimera, so that's just 13 extra pots.
Lovely. If you want something glorious to ad to you collection. Admittedly excessively difficult to get your hands on. Look out for - Rohrer & Klingner Antique Ink. All the colours are lovely as they look like the colours we like on miniatures and not the very singel pigment standard palette usually found in ink ranges.
Where did you get those paint shelves from? Was it something else converted to paint shelf or did you found those somewhere online? I'm really like the ones from: 7:50, 9:00, 11:50, 14:30. Also will your AK shelf from 17:20, be able to hold many citadel pots? Thanks for any info! 👋
I own the entire Monument collection as my base, then I get some recommended paints from other ranges to fit specific purposes. One I love is Snakebite Leather Contrast from citadel.
I was a pure citadel guy for years. it's what I learned on and knew colors for. but my flgs has ak and man it's become my go to. so smooth, so matte, but coverage is great.
Golden SoFlat has more colors now, I love that paint :). Have you tried the new Vallejo Game colors? Their new formula paints like a breeze, I'm quite impressed tbh.
I'm just glad there's people with larger hoards than me. I was tempted to back the recent UltraKryl Kickstarter, but denied myself after realizing I just backed 5 full different sets on various Kickstarters over 2 years and still have only used about 5% of them. I wonder what Vincent V and Barbatos Rex hoards look like? They must have rooms full.
I didn't back that one due to the timeline. 2024 isn't that far away but I have enough paints to last me until '24 and if I hear good things about them, I'll pick them up off the rack.
Glad to see I'm not the only who hoards various paint brands. Surprised to see no lacquer/acrylic hybrid paints like Tamiya and Mr Hobby. I do tend to get a lot of Life Colour mimetic, Vallejo MC, Ammo Mig, Reaper and AK paints since their range of colours are very suited for painting models based on real world stuff like a building's stone walls, brick walls and roof tiles etc. Surprisingly the only colours I use from Pro Acryl are a couple of their greys and browns. An interesting upload I have to say. I do admire those who can use a limited set of primary and secondary colour paints and make on the fly their own colour mixes.
I bought the Kimera Cartacci Red yesterday and the seller I bought from had both sets of paint and single paints. Thanks for going through all of your paints and giving some info and your thoughts on them so we can decide what colors to buy.
So glad to see I am not the only one with a horde of paints on my desk. I thought I was bad with 356 paints and counting. It’s so bad I use the app “Model Colors”on my iPhone so don’t buy doubles. Works with my tracking my pile of shame too! 😂
Really great stuff as always. Between this and your latest "cleaning house" vid, it's great to learn from someone who has tried soooo many paints out there. I've started looking at AK and Pro Acryl only, and it's overwhelming! You mentioned in this vid that you could probably get away with 25-30 paints from AK and be set...care to make a vid about those 25-30 paints? Amazing stuff sir!
I have to say, the new formulation & bottles for Vallejo Game Color have been perfection for me. The new VGC Dead White gives Pro Acryl's Titanium White a run for its money!
Awesome video, and I just bought the AK pastel set of six, cant wait to use one, thanks for the tips on the others. It's a pity or not that some are not sold over here in the UK, but hey it's the hobby we are in.
Man can i relate. I paint mini's, busts, scale models of all kinds (air, armour, scifi, auto etc) so have soooo many paints etc. Entire Minitaire, AK Real Color, Vallejo Model Air and large amounts of Tamiya Acrylic, Tamiya LP, P3, Citadel Contrast, Ammo Acrylics (man they are rubbish), AK Acrylics and so much more. I have just moved to a nice drawer based storage system to free up bench space and it means i have 90% of my psints and most used supplies within reach. So many worse things to spend ya $$ on.
Your sir are not alone I been collecting and paint since 1988 and I have so many models and paints of all types. It's a awesome lovely healthy addition! Paint on!
Thanks for sharing 👍. When you got to the Pro Acryl range my wife thought I was going crazy because I was audibly agreeing with you that they are all great, I use Olive Flesh all the time oh and Dark Ivory is great too.
I have 2 AK paints, Saddle Brown and Medium Rust. I bought the crackle medium in hopes of using it with the Medium Rust to make crackling rust effects on some of my robot minis. I haven't figured out how to do that and there are no tutorials on this specific crackle medium. I have watched tutorials on other crackle mediums, they didn't work. I have contacted AK about it, after 2 years, they haven't gotten back to me. I have put the medium down, let it dry, paint the rust over it. I have put the medium down and painted over it while the medium was still wet. I have done both, but the rust first. I have mixed the medium and the rust together in different ratios. I have thinned the rust in different ratios, I have thinned the medium in different ratios. I have done all combinations of all of those, I have not been able to get it to make crackling rust effects. I've even googled how to use this exact crackle medium, no results for this specific medium. Do you have any idea on this, Ninjon?
I agree with your stand on AK interactive. Most consistent major paint line in the market. I adore their intense colours. I'll try the pastel tubes then. Cheers
I fell down the AK rabbit hole on Sunday when I was having some finish and coverage issues with Vallejo Model Color paints I had used for years. I bought all the non-metallic/transparent Pro Acryl paints this past January, and while it's the best range I've used top to bottom when it comes to expectation and consistency, their range isn't super deep (yet) compared to others and some tones just aren't there yet, so you still reach for -some- things. In my frustration, I remembered that AK has keyed their colors to match VMC colors and have been told they're matt and have great coverage, so I just went on a mini spree. 36 AK paints arriving from Michigan Toy Soldier this week. Can't imagine I will end up with the suitcase (or even the new 120 paints for x set), but if they perform like I've been told/read, I can't imagine the need for anything between AK and Pro Acryl outside of inks/contrast style stuff. Though ol Alex from Sweden still makes me want to play with So Flat paints... /end of Ted Talk gimmick.
One of us! One of us! One of us! Also, it's very niche, but you can't get a better metal then Ak's Xtreme Metal. It's not acrylic, and it's definitely for airbrush(mostly), but it's for when you want people to think a thing is made of metal, not painted metal.
No, you are not alone I have been painting since the 1980's, but I use to paint with flat enamel paint by Testers. I did this because the paints would not dry out when you had to store them for any amount of time. Keep painting I am here to support you and you paints of choice.
I just moved from Citadel paints to Vallejo model colour and am blown away by the quality jump. Turns out I'm a few years behind. Been eyeing the Pro acryl starter box
I enjoy collecting paint as well. Probably what kicked off my desire for more paints was finding a great deal of the entire Reaper Core Colors range about four years ago. Since then added the following ranges: Reaper Bones, AK Gen 3, Scale Artists and Instant Colors and new Vallejo Game Color and Express paints. Have many from other ranges like Citadel, ProAcryl and SoFlat and about 100 oils.
The AK 3rd gen paints are what I started with a few years ago and I love them, they always seem to work exactly how I want them to and the colour range is so damn good! I just picked up the basic starter set for my little girl and the packaging for the box is outstanding, it provides a colour wheel and they have explanations for all kinds of things like primary/secondary/complementary colours and tips on how to mix them to achieve the colours you want, I think it's gonna be a great little resource for her.
I used to piecemeal my paint collection together by project, then I sprung for the full ak 3rd gen range and haven't felt like I needed any paints since.
I love how you broke down the pros and cons, what to keep and what not to keep. I live in Japan so some of these things are not available here. Have you ever heard or used Turner Acrylic? They come in those tubes and was curious about them as I will soon be starting my painting adventure.
Basically my collection of paints are Citadel, Ak interactive and Vallejo, plus some tamiya stuff for special things(vividly suggest tamiya x-22 clear to paint all the glass cockpits from flyers, they look amazing)
I have mostly citadel, but I have started to experiment with other brand, I have vajelo , pro acrylic, Kimera, scale 75, , buy my favourite it white Kimera, pro acrylic, but I use them all with each other any way , but I would like few more paints with a unusual colours which brand and colours do you think I should keep an eye out, great videos, love your collection and you have some great different videos to watch .😊
I am new to painting minis and started with vallejo but recently a friend pointed me towards Holbien acrylic gauche which comes in tubes but is beautiful
I love this episode! I collect paints simply because I am curious about the properties of different ranges, and if a paint shows up on someone's "best of" list, then I have to check that one out also. I do have a lot of heavy bodied paints from Scale and from Golden, which I bought with the goal of creating actual surface texture and visible brush strokes. i could probably omit those paints and simply add a heavy medium to my regular paints instead.
the golden so flat yellows are seriously the best yellow paints ever they can get full coverage over white in one thin coat and over black it only takes 2-4 coats. for a vibrant strong yellow. they're insanely good for being yellow

Nice new tattoo. I look forward to seeing a close up when you’re back at the table.
You’ve been uploading minutes before my newborns late night feed (aus time) and it’s been the perfect thing every time. It helps that the videos are quality!
Bro!!! I already love the channel, but the fact that you have Gath of Baal on your wall makes me love it even more. Keep up the great work.
Cosigning the Golden Soflat. Great paints to use.
Came here to say this. They’re at 60 colors now, I think.
ive found it a bummer they dropped some of my favorite colors in the reformulation. almost the entirety of the heavy range got cut.
First time seeing the new tattoo - looks sick! You got some great work there 🖤
I’m not sure ‘sick’ is a complement.
Tattoos are great - especially if you’re a pirate or an inmate in a Russian prison.
I love these simple videos on paint ranges. Everything like this gets saved in a hobby list.
i started hobbying 6 months ago and ive become a paint goblin ever since and i this is like looking at a future i aspire to be
Thanks for reminding me about your's and Vince's paint sets. Just picked them up.
This had the unintended effect of making me want more paint... Damnit Jon!
P3 paints are so good. Their ink range is still to this day my absolute favorite. They are also impossible to find.
Super helpful thanks for throwing this up.
New and might first Tattoo!? Iooks great !! I love it ❤
When I received my Wave 1 TTC paints, I gave my corresponding Citadel colours to a friend of mine. Waiting on Wave 2 to arrive now.
This makes me feel better about having all the Scale75, all the Pro Acryl and most of the army painter and Vallejo ranges.
This makes my plastic tub of paints look like a good start. Damn brother!
I paint most of my minis in oils but I quite liked Scale 75 artist ones. They behaved like I wanted paints to do on a wet palette.
P3 Coal Black, and Sanguine Base, are two must haves. Molten Bronze is also one of my favorite Golds.
I haven't found a color like your Pro acryl Dark Plum in YEARS. So glad I have that color in my repertoire again.
I have to say, the new formulation & bottles for Vallejo Game Color have been perfection for me. The new VGC Dead White gives Pro Acryl's Titanium White a run for its money!
I also own a lot of paints from different ranges. One thing I really enjoy, is to paint Warhammer Underworld Bands with certain Ranges.
I think I use Dark Ivory on 90% of my models 😅
Scale75 Red Leather is definitely one of my favorites. I use it as the base for layering with red, always
Nice, I use a mix of Vallejo model color, Pro-Acryl, Citadel contrast, Valleoj metal color, Daller-Rowley inks, and a little Citadel.
Great video I am in the uk and managed to get my hands on your pro Acryl signature range its frickin awsome !!
I am new to painting minis and started with vallejo but recently a friend pointed me towards Holbien acrylic gauche which comes in tubes but is beautiful
I think the only thing to note with more professional acrylics is they need to be watered down more or maybe use a medium.
Very interesting that AK seems to have got the top marks. I swear by them 100% actually, like them better than all my others
I like that of all the paints you have, the two sets that I actually own are the ones that you're taking off your racks to make space.
I write some hobby tutorial content for Rick and the guys at Michtoy. Awesome to see you working with them. Have always loved your content!
the golden so flat yellows are seriously the best yellow paints ever they can get full coverage over white in one thin coat and over black it only takes 2-4 coats. for a vibrant strong yellow. they're insanely good for being yellow
