  • Is the Simmons SD600 still a good buy?
    I discuss long term durability and the nuance of using them with Logic Pro X. In my studio I use them to record drums on tracks for artists. I've discovered some issues that I've learned to expect and fix. However, I haven't had issues with the drums themselves.
    SIMMONS SD600 drums can be purchased at Guitar Center, Target.com and Musicians Friend. I am not sponsored nor am I an affiliate of any of those companies.

    nice review! it's great to see that someone goes back and reviews a product after using it for a number of months. I am almost 62 yrs old and regret NOT asking my Mom for a drum set when I was around 10 yrs old. I am researching all the e-kits on the market, and I want to find a kit that has a 12 inch snare ( mesh) and at least 10-12 inch Toms (mesh) and some 12+ inch cymbals ( ride + crash) and the only E-Kits I can find that have that including a high-quality Module ( the key to a good kit) are the Roland models, which may be out of my current price range. ( $500-$700)

    I've actually hooked my alesis d4 drum module to this kit and it works flawless. The only thing is I lost the ability to cut off the crash, but yeah u actually helped me decide on a budget friendly electronic kit and I couldn't be happier with this kit. So thank you sir and keep up with the great content!

    I just bought one last week, used it all last week for practice for a choir concert, and did three shows (Fri/Sat/Sun), so it got A LOT of play time. It does have some quirks in that if I changed a saved kit's cymbal or something, it saved it to a USER KIT and if you don't remember where it saved, moving around kits during a concert is a pain. Also, after 4hrs of practice the ride cymbal sensor started to skip more, even after changing the sensitivity higher. I wouldn't recommend using a drum stick lower than a 7a either.

    • @KeithronPowell
      @KeithronPowell  Год назад +1

      Wow! That’s awesome. Yeah, agreed! The stick size is important based on how hard or soft you play.

  • @PGX222
    @PGX222 Год назад +2

    It does the extra hit of triggering because the pickups just “feel” the hit . It happened on the old Roland TD even with its native sounds (before the mesh came out)

    10:30 - I've only played my SD600 thru the module and a couple of the kits have the same issue with the high hat causing phantom snare hits. I think you may be onto something with the vibration theory as it definitely is dynamic. I've also noticed the snare is just sensitive anyway. I've not messed with any of the settings to fix that yet. So, that may be another solution. Thanks for sharing a good review after owning it for a while.

    • @KeithronPowell
      @KeithronPowell  Год назад +1

      Yo, I meant to cover this in my LIVE discussion today. If you’ve got the heads too tight and the sensitivity maxed you’ll have those issues. There’s a little balancing act that you need to consider.

    Hey Keith, thanks for your videos man! Just to clarify, the SD600 has ride bell sounds in the library yes? Meaning that if we wanted to we could assign the bell sound to one the tom rims since the toms are dual zone. Yes?

    Between the SD600 and the SD1250 (not concerned about price) is the SD1250 really so much better than the SD600 for gigging?. I'm looking to get back into gigging but the SD1250 seems to have more hardware and the SD600 looks (and sounds) ideal for my use. I want to just fold up the kit and leave at the end of the nite and I like that the SD600 does NOT have that extra snare stand. But is it that inferior in some ways to gigging with the 1250? The drum brain looks very different obviously, but REALLY? Would I go wrong fussing over a snare stand when the 1250 might be head over heels better than the SD600? Also on the4 SD600 expanded kit are any of the cymbals dual zone? I already have a monster Sonor kit and am looking for quality but also compactness & ease of setup/teardown Thanks for your thoughts

    • @KeithronPowell
      @KeithronPowell  2 года назад +1

      The 600 is not dual zone… I own both and I’d go with the 1250 without question. I recorded one of my singles with the 600 and everything I was missing and wished I had it hit when I got the 1250. The only thing I did was take the kick pedal from the 600 and use it with the 1250. The snare is larger and better response…the larger toms are better… the dual and triple zones… sounds… when it comes to sounds you need to watch the video on why I don’t like to judge all sounds…. The drum sounds really good on y simmons speakers. I’d say for gigs the 1250 is the way to ho

      @@KeithronPowell Thanks Keith great advice. Do you know if there is a rim click sound in the SD2250 library? Y’know the kind of click you get when you lay the stick down on the snare head and click the other side against the rim. Otherwise I’m getting the SD1250 thanks to you. Need your honest opinion. I know you'll give it to me, lol! Just need something to practice and play along with music. Is it worth the extra $ to buy the sd1200 or 1250 vs the 600? Really like the Bluetooth feature and app is why I'm probably not going Alesis

    • @KeithronPowell
      @KeithronPowell  2 года назад

      That’s a good one! So I bought the 600 because I didn’t want to spend the money but wanted the 1200 (1250 wasn’t out yet) but I was using it to literally make records.
      If I’m just practicing and not going in the public or making music to be on Spotify or Apple Music for people to listen too… I’m going 600. I ca then take my acoustic set out when I need to.

    • @heelfan66
      @heelfan66 2 года назад

      @@KeithronPowell That makes sense, thanks! Yeah the difference in price from the 600 to 1200 is $340 where I am. And about 280 bucks difference between the 600 extended and 1200 basic. Pretty significant, so I'm leaning toward 600. Just hope I don't get frustrated with cymbals. I think I'll really miss having my bell sound like on acoustic 😕

      @@heelfan66 I must say… when I recorded my single with it I just had to remember to go change it in the DAW to the heel sound. A lil more work but it worked.

    • @heelfan66
      @heelfan66 2 года назад

      @@KeithronPowell Right. Another question if you don't mind. Are the snare and kick triggers pretty comparable to the 1200 in consistency? Also any noticeable difference in hi hat? They don't have one set up at my gc to try out, is why I'm asking you because I know you've played both. And every time I ask salespeople there about Simmons they try to steer me towards alesis in that price range, lol. Which is strange to me, given that Simmons is literally their own brand. 🤔 I'm starting to think they get more commission on Alesis maybe? Got to be some reason they're pushing them so hard, lol

    • @KeithronPowell
      @KeithronPowell  2 года назад

      @@heelfan66 I know for a fact they don’t get paid more to sell with Alesis. They just know Alesis as a name brand and they assume that since simmons is the stores brand it’s gotta be cheap.
      As to the the triggers… I didn’t have any issues as long as I was playing from the Module. When connected to my DAW I I’d notice issues but I learned how to work around it and fix it.
      Now, I haven’t seen one drum l, in any brand l, that was 100% perfect but I really didn’t notice any issues on it playing through the module.

      I actually just spoke with Simmons CS and the told me they are not making an android app for their products.. also, it took 2 emails (never answered either of them) and numerous phone calls with HOURS of hold time. To finally get an incredibly rude CS rep that just flat out said "no". But the worst part was the AWFUL customer service. I spent wayyy too much time trying to get that answer I couldn't imagine if I had one of these kits and it had an issue.. it would never get remedied. That's a HARD pass on any Simmons product for me. I have an alesis dm6 that I bought used and it had an issue shortly after I bought it. I contacted them and they sent me a new module even tho I wasn't the original owner.. good CS sells products. I guess I'll buy another alesis.

      @@jjmar66 I have it on good authority that one is being created. Now, customer service may not know because it’s being created behind the scenes and it don’t make sense for them to tell cs and have them throwing out dates all over the place. As a person who built an app and submitted to both apple and android I know the android platform is the worst for builders. So, while I know it’s coming I’ve not been given a release date.

      @Keithron Powell Thank you for your response! I really hope they are working on an android app cause it's not smart business to exclude halfish of your potential customers. I currently work for a company that makes electronic devices with a worldwide customer base. I work in testing and very closely with our app developers so I do hear all the "fun" stuff about both platforms. Since our products are 100% app controlled we cannot exclude either platform but I also know it is not that hard to make both android and ios work if you already have a foundation built.
