  • In today's video, I am sharing tips on making half-square triangle (HST) squares two at a time and eight at a time. You can use whatever technique you like to make all the HSTs you need! For smaller projects, two at a time may work best. But if you are making a quilt with many, many HSTs, the eight at a time method might be the best.
Hope my instructions and tips are helpful. Feel free to ask questions!

I don't have a square ruler, but do have a triangle ruler that I use to square up HSTs. It works essentially the same way: don't press the HST open, but use the ruler to trim to the correct size and then press. After years of frustration with HSTs not being consistently correct, I've become a devotee of doing them slightly oversized and trimming down. Same with flying geese units!

Thank you...great video..I am a visual learner so videos are a boost! I usually just make 2 at a time and use the drawn line. I have noticed that my sewing is straight until I get to the bottom and then there's a wiggle. I like your tape and see how keeping the point of the fabric aligned with the drawn line on the tape keeps the sewing true. I can hardly wait to try this...assuming I can line it up exactly at a quarter inch. Thanks so much!
