@@ScrapFabricLove yes I see how in the second method you add the backing pieces as you join the sections that have quilted-together batting and quilt top . So what happens to the backing? Is it never quilted?
No it isn’t fully quilted - it is secured across the back by the next join. You can add quilting lines either side of the ditch for example if you want more quilting on the back in that method but not as intricate as what was done on the individual blocks. Thank you Kristin. Perfect timing. I have a king quilt top and back ready to baste, but I have been stalling. I prefer to hand quilt but I used a high thread count white sheet as a background fabric and it is too thick to accept the needle by hand. Dreading trying to wrestle a king quilt through the throat of my 201. I think I will go with option 1 since I like the way it looks when the back is quilted like the top and I only planned to straight line quilt anyways. Hoping it works out. Love your channel. Long time subscriber. Cheers from a fellow Canuck living in South Carolina. :)
I really like this idea bec you cd almost make a reversible sort of scrappy quilt by using different fabrics on the back of blocks rather than all one fabric.
This is a super helpful video tutorial!! You thoroughly explained the process beginning to end. Thank you so much!! I look forward to trying these methods.
This is so clever, I slowed it down as you suggested to see you making the whole quilt and although I couldn’t see you putting the backing layer on, because your hands are so deft (!) - it really helped me understand how it goes together!! Will give this a go! Thank you ❤
I’m having a great time trying this today - on our Canadian Thanksgiving. So far so good, but I think I. Going to have to insert a solid row every third just to make it bigger as I haven’t got enough 5” squares. Will let you know how it goes. Thanks sew much!
Love your video, although with process #2, where you add backing after top and batting are quilted really makes the back look "minimally quilted" but good options

I was very inspired by your method and I modified it a little bit to work easier for myself.
Here is what I did and see if you would consider to try.
I used this order:
Join row 1 with row 2
Quilt row 1
Join row 3 to row 2
Quilt row 2
Continue like that until all rows joined and quilted.
The reason for this: order:
not to join a quilted row with a non quilted row for the reason you mentioned, they might have different dimensions after one row is quilted and one not.
What else I did:
I first basted the tops together with a red color thread to make sure all the important points were matching and nothing shifted during the sawing of all layers. The basting I did was using a long stitch setting and sawn at less than 1/4 inch so it was easy to remove after the rows were joined. Basting can be done by hand too. I consider this step important when you have blocks with multiple points that are important to match exactly.
In my experience, when sawing multiple layers things tend to shift and is nice to avoid that.
I would appreciate your comment.

Thank you so much. I have avoided QAYG forever because it was so fiddley. I will use this method.
So glad you liked it - I felt the same about the other methods! Hope this works for you.
Thank you Kristen. Such an awesome quilter and teacher😊
Very sweet of you thank you
Thank you for this video. I am excited to use my scraps of fabric and batting. I have been looking for something to get me excited to quilt again.
Glad you liked it! Have fun with it!
Thank you. I’ve watched so many videos on this and still get lost but this makes so much sense to me now thank you
So glad it makes sense!
Thank you so much- THIS is the QAYG video I have been wanting and needing. LOVE! ;)
Glad you like it!
I’ll try that last one first!!! I’m a bit rusty so that assembly will be quicker for me. Thanks for the reminder about the weight.
I just learned something wonderful. Thank you thank you. I just inherited a TON of fabric and wondered what to do with it. Now I know.
So glad it was useful! I’m doing a follow up next week so let me know if you have any questions I should cover.
This made my day, thanks ever so much! I cannotuse it for my thick crumb squares, but so many other things!
This is so encouraging. I’m so intimidated by starting to quilt and this method seems so accessible. Thank you!!
Oh good! So glad it seems doable. Good luck with giving it a go - let me know if you have any issues.
These methods are nice and the quilt is reversible
Thank you, lots of options for quilt as you go - no excuses now 🙂
Thanks for watching!
I have quilted in my life! A few years ago when looking at someone else’s video, I thought what you actually made. I was like, why doesn’t she just add the batting in, quilt it with lines, or not and then add another row. Thank you for having the same idea and putting into practice!! : )
I actually found this method from other folk on RUclips who were making quilts with sergers. I am still confused why I don’t see this method more often - or why the sergers were involved in the first place 🤷♀️
Wow am i thrilled that your video popped up. This is just what I'm looking for. Thanks a million for all your sharing. 🌻 Watching you from South Africa. 🌻
So glad it was what you needed! Thanks for watching!
Kristen, watching you from Australia! I want to thank you for all your very informative videos. I’ve been watching your channel for a long time now but never commented before. You’re so down to earth and just get on with it! I love that. You’re inspiring heaps of people who have trouble with large quilts and your other research posts are always interesting. Thank you 😊
Thanks so much! So glad you find something useful in the videos and thanks for taking the time to comment! 💕
Thank you for sharing how to sandwich the quilt blocks. I have to try this method.
Hope you like it when you try it!
After watching this video, I see more ways to make quilts without buying batting. Thanks.
Fab!
I’m new to quilting and did enjoy your video. I plan to use to method when I move to quilt-as-you-go construction. Thanks.
Thanks glad you liked it.
I definitely going to try this. I don’t have a long arm machine and would like to make bigger quilts.
Garhering my scraps now for my first QAYG! Thank you for a very HELPFUL and easy to understand video!
Glad you liked it! Thanks!
Many thanks for this wonderful version of the QAYG method. I shall be using it from now on. It is exactly what I have been looking for.
Yeah! So glad it was what you needed! Thanks!
Ive been doing something similar to this, lately but i do whole 10 inch blocks at a time . Works for me
This is genius. I can't wait to try it! TFS
Let me know how it goes!
Love the way you go straight to explaining, and you're very instructive. I subscribed.
Thanks!
Wow. That 3rd method is my favorite. I’ll definitely be trying it next time thanks for sharing!
Glad you liked it!
Genius! Thank you! I am definitely going to try this. I can’t afford to send out my quilts to have them done. I like the fact that you’re working to the left and won’t have the bulk on the right.
Glad you liked it! Have fun trying it!
This method still amazes me to this day !
Excellent instructions. Thanks so much from a Canadian in America !
Thanks so much! From a Canadian in Scotland! 😀 🇨🇦
Ha ha an English woman watching from Australia 🇦🇺!!!😊
Fabulous tutorial! Thank you so much ❤
Thanks so much 💕💕
Super helpful and fun. Thank you. I actually have a long arm but for smaller quilts or just a change of pace, this looks great. xx Karen
Thank you so much. This is brilliant for me as I love to quit as I go.
Fantastic, remarkable, awesome, etc.. I can't wait to try this on my next quilt. Now, I don't have to restrict myself to baby or lap quilts.❤ ❤❤
Yeah! So glad this can help you make bigger quilts - hope it works for you!
This is fabulous. I just found your channel and I’m so glad I did. I am gonna try doing this method of quilting as it’s so hard for me to wrangle a full sized quilt to get it quilted nicely. I’m too short 😅. So I’m a new subscriber.
Welcome! So glad you liked this - I hope it works for you!
So glad I found this video I love the tips you gave us. I do not have room or money to buy one of the long arm quilting machines that automatically quilt the quilt. I am so anxious to try your method.
Glad you liked it - hope it works for you too!
YES!!! What a great idea I can’t wait to try this! Yes this is the first time meeting you I enjoyed your video and plan on watching more. Thank you,Jacqueline from Michigan 😊
Thanks so much! Have fun with this!
This is a wonderful tutorial - thank you so much.
Really love this idea! Can’t wait to try it!
I like to quilt as you go and find this method very interesting, thank you.
Gotta say, I’ll be trying this! Thank you!!!
Thank you so much. Can't wait to try this join and flip
Thank you so much! Love this method. I have a bunch of blocks finished but want to do a quilt as you go method....you have solved my dilemma❣️❣️❣️
Oh good - glad it was useful!
Glad this came at the right time for you! I’m hoping it works for you - do let me know if you run into any issues! Good luck!
haven't tried this yet. thank you for the demo at the end on something larger!!
Glad that bit was useful. Do let me know how it goes if you try it!
I really like this idea bec you cd almost make a reversible sort of scrappy quilt by using different fabrics on the back of blocks rather than all one fabric.
Yes I like not having to piece a big backing and having that ‘striped ‘ quilt look on the back.
Good to see how both methods work. I'm going to try this with a smaller block quilt...Sometime🤷♀
Thanks Sue! Hope you like it when you get a chance to try it!
Absolutely love this tutorial. You did an awesome job. Thank you for giving us this additional methods.
Thanks so much! So glad you liked it!
I really love all the quilt blocks u make especially the improve blocks
Thanks so much!
The things you teach and share are wonderful..Love Love Love
Thank you!
This is a super helpful video tutorial!! You thoroughly explained the process beginning to end. Thank you so much!! I look forward to trying these methods.
Thanks so much! Hope you have fun with it!
This is so clever, I slowed it down as you suggested to see you making the whole quilt and although I couldn’t see you putting the backing layer on, because your hands are so deft (!) - it really helped me understand how it goes together!! Will give this a go! Thank you ❤
Oh good glad slowing it down helped it to make sense. You can pin the backing strips on of course but I just slip them under and adjust as I go.
Great QAYG tutorial, I need this technique in my life, thank you so much
So glad you liked it! Enjoy!
I wish I seen that sooner. Will do that on my next quilt. Thank you so much.
Hope it helps on the next one!
Thanks! This may encourage me to quilt!
Yeah! Hope it works for you!
Just found you today! I am a beginner...looking forward to trying this.
Hi! Thanks for watching! Hope this method works for you!
Thank you for this wonderful video. Yes, I am going to try this method. Looks fun and easy.
Have fun with it!
Lovely presentation. The last one looks great
Thanks!
I’m so glad I found this video!!! I have RA and hand stitching is not an option!
Oh so glad it can help you! Have fun with it!
Thank you so much for showing your technics step by step , it has been very helpful
Glad it was helpful!
I’m having a great time trying this today - on our Canadian Thanksgiving. So far so good, but I think I. Going to have to insert a solid row every third just to make it bigger as I haven’t got enough 5” squares. Will let you know how it goes. Thanks sew much!
Glad you are enjoying it! Hope you had a good thanksgiving! My kids gobbled up all the pumpkin pie 😂
Love your video, although with process #2, where you add backing after top and batting are quilted really makes the back look "minimally quilted" but good options
