I have made 6 Baby size quilts since I watched your video. A new group of my sewing sisters LOVE big, quick and fast quilts. (We do them for a charity which requires that the quilts measure 36 x 44). I started with the 2 1/2 x 4 - then I uped the size to 3 1/2 x 6 - and the last one was 4 1/2 x 9. Worked out Great! Can't wait to share this quilt with them. THANKS!!
A dear friend of mine has a special needs grandson who graduated from high school this year. The kids in his group were all gifted school T-shirts and she brought his over with some well worn jeans and asked me to make a quilt with them. I sat on it for quite a while without inspiration, in part because I haven't ever seen with knot fabric and partly because the color is the one that I despise among all others. Then came your Potato chip quilt. I pulled out some colors from stash and started cutting. The block is just great. Easy to make and looks good. I'm going to set the blocks individually with some dashing and use the school logo for the center block. Think this is a real win/win Thanks again.
@JustGetitDoneQuilts Will do. His Gramma was here today and she loves it. Layed out the blocks and I think grandson is really going to be happy with it. Will definitely put this pattern in my rotation.
It’s so good to see a tutorial again. I like to see what you make rather than the interviews. Thank you for showing how to use these smaller pieces of fabric.
I love your potato chip variations. One thing I tried with this block, was to change the size of the chips, which makes a quilt much quicker. As long as the length is twice as long as the width, the blocks go together the same way. I cut 10.5" x 5.5" chips from a fat quarter bundle and got a 67" x 75" quilt top. Cut and sewn in a single day. I love this block and plan on making lots more with regular and large chips.
I love this idea! I already have been saving chips for a while and I really like this idea instead of just making blocks! And thankyou for doing the math for us " non mathy" quilters🎉
Totally agree with your use of the leader / ender plan. It takes a bit of organizing to get lined up for this method, but once you actually buy into the process, you will be pleased with the ability to make two quilts at the same time. To keep my system alive with newer fabrics, I cut my leftover pieces after finishing a quilt into L/E size pieces. The best thing about quilting with friends is that they give you their scraps or we trade scraps. Sure does refresh the fabric palette. This video was so enlightening....my to-do list has a new member! Thanks for sharing your great ideas.
My quilt crew has been talking about their potato ship blocks. So I decided to see how many quilt patterns I could make using this block. I really enjoyed this one. It came together so fast and easy and with no seams to match up, it was pretty low stress too. Enjoy!!!
That's a nice version using "chips". I like the idea of making the long strip sets to use as well vs making blocks to sew together in the original version. Adding those darker outlines adds interest and movement to the quilt as well and shows off the rectangle shape even more :)
Karen, I am amazed at how much I always learn from you. The weight at the end of the ruler is genius! Thanks for sharing all your knowledge, you have built an incredibly valuable channel for quilters! 🙂
For my father's 70th birthday this year I used the potato chip block for a quilt, the center block was plain white fabric my nieces and nephew painted with fabric paint and we all chose different fabric for the chips. 9x9 blocks with thin sashing so I didn't have to nest seams or worry about fabric matching. His birthday is at the end of the month. I did make the chips bigger but it was easy enough to do.
How did you know I cleaned up my mount scrapmore just last night and I have nice piles of 2-1/2” pieces, plus oodles of 6” and 5” strips? This is perfect right now. I can’t tell you how many of your stash-buster quilts I’ve made. Thank you!
I made a beautiful snuggle size, truly scrappy potato chip quilt using leftover 4.5 × 2.5 chips. It took what felt like a lifetime because: 1) I chose each chip rather than using a grab bag technique, 2) I had to sew them end-to-end, chip by chip, 3) I hand embroidered a center panel with multicolored dragonflies as a focal point. The result was totally worth the time spent, though, and my sister loves it! I have plenty of scraps and chips leftover to make a few more, which is great bc I have had several requests from friends and family for similar quilts. I am a new quilter, but to anyone who hasn't given it a try, I say Go For It! Expect to spend some time, but with Karen's great info you'll do fine. Leah Louise gives a very chatty but wonderful potato chip quilt tutorial for using 4.5 × 2.5 chips if you want to try it. Thanks, Karen, for all of your great tips and tricks and encouragement!❤
I learned of this PCB from Lea Louise this past Sept. & found it totally addictive. Am literally attaching my Binding in the last 2 days. Was so fun to make, I had a hard time stopping. My blocks are 12" each & my top is abt 4 blocks wide by 5 blocks down w/ a thin inner border & a thicker outer border. I love it!!!
i have had this jacket so long. ❤️ the colour. I think it's my favourite. I purchased it off a deep discount rack at the GAP. I will be very sad when it's too thread worn to wear
Thanks Karen for another great stash-buster quilt! I like your idea of fussy cutting a center for the quilt. I might try it with a larger center block with a fabric I have. I appreciate all you do
Thanks Karen! Videos like this is exactly why I watch your channel. In this political climate, I really need something to occupy my mind and your videos are like a cool drink of water on a very hot day.
This looks like a great one to do and I have a whole bucket of 2 1/2” strips I’ve been looking for a quick and easy pattern to use them for! Thank you!
This is great! I just got my first Tula Pink fabric and I stressed out about what to make. It's the Alice in Wonderland collection and I wanted it to be special, as it's my first quilting purchase actually intended for a qulit! I used scraps before from other projects making garments or other non-quilting sewing. But I think this is just the sweet spot between fun and exciting and the faric actually being the star of the show! Thank you so much!
OH HAPPY DAYS ! have been hoping you were coming up with another Stashbuster. Then felt guilty wondering where you would have found time to do😂 so. Your schedule is already jammed packed. I recently spent a weekend organizing my stash. It’s going to pay off now. The best part your quilt is easy to make, being a beginner I like a no stress sewing. Thank you so much. I sure appreciate you!
When I want to put 12 inch blocks together for a relaxing sewing evening, potato chip blocks are the way to go. I finally had to start sewing the blocks together to make quilt tops for my quilt guild. Also use 2 by 3.5 inch chips. Great for smaller scraps. Thank you, Karen!
What a creative and neat way to make use of the remnants. Love the way you’ve played with different shades of fabrics. Thank you for sharing this, I’m sure to try it soon 💕
I have had fun with this block. Just finished my fourth variation. 3 have large floral 8.5" squares in the center and two layers of chips to finish at 16" square. The inner layer colour matched the flowers and the outer layer was green for the leaves. Then I tried half colour half light. Now I have another size in my scrap stash!
Oh, I love this version of the potato chip block! I’m in the middle of using a group of fabrics that are not all quilting cotton, but they are all from my husband’s aunt (98 y/o) and his grandmother who passed 35 years ago. I look forward to having it completed!
I love sewing Potato Chip blocks. A whole quilt as one block sounds like a lot of fun. I tried opening the Free Pattern Download 3 times. I can't get it to open. I'll just have to live, cut, and sew without it. Thank you for this wonderful stash busting pattern.
Thank you for this pattern! I love the Potato Chip block and this looks like an interesting variation. It is also a good size for making charity quilts.
And here's another pattern to add to my list.......lucky for me i have a TON of scraps, and many are already cut 2.5 by 4.5.......this one was meant to be accomplished. THANK YOU for sharing. God's Blessings.
Thanks Karen for sharing another wonderful and educational video! I’m here wishing I had this beautiful fabric collection. It looks like Moda Basic Grey Cider Collection is in there. I love how all the colors are so harmonious and fun! It turned out so wonderful! I’m a new quilter and having fun with small quilting projects to build my confidence and knowledge. I don’t have a lot of storage space so I’m enjoying making things as gifts. This is a great quilting choice! 🥳🤩
I started watching you in the very beginnings of your channel. At that time I was a new quilter, in another country and a long distance relationship. The years have passed and I'm now in Canada, married and more experienced in my quilting journey. And yet: for the last month I've been returning to your organisational videos as I set up my space in our house. This last weekend was spent organising my stash (for the first time ever!!) AND processing Mt. Scrapmore. As I sorted I found that pile of "too big to be a scrap, but too small for much else" and thought...I wonder if Karen can tell me what to do with that? This video is the answer. If you ever find yourself in the Maritimes we'd love to have you stay. Love and best wishes from PEI.
Thank you for sharing how to do a potato chip quilt. I have been wondering that everyone on you tube was talking about but I really like your instructions!
What fun! I have lots of jelly rolls that I’m eager to use. I started piecing some of them last week, but I must wait to finish it till after the holidays. I’m so slow at cutting that it’s ridiculous. 😂 Thanks for this fabulous idea, Karen! 😘
I love all your stashbuster videos, and especially want to dig into my scraps with this one! Thank you❤ & I hope you design another over the winter (hint, hint😊)
Thanks for a new twist in the potato chip block/quilt! I have an OVERFLOWING bin of 2.5” strips and pieces! Also I’d like to mention you can vary the size of the chips as long as they’re twice as long as they are wide (taking into consideration seam allowance).

Sounds amazing. Send photos
@JustGetitDoneQuilts Will do. His Gramma was here today and she loves it. Layed out the blocks and I think grandson is really going to be happy with it. Will definitely put this pattern in my rotation.
I love this. I'm going to make pillows using this idea.
Funny, I never thought of a pillow. Great idea
It’s so good to see a tutorial again. I like to see what you make rather than the interviews. Thank you for showing how to use these smaller pieces of fabric.
I totally agree. The interviews to me are boring.
Thank you, Karen! The potato chip blocks will be a fun project for next year. After the holiday projects 😅
Yes, I think it would work with layer cakes cut in half too
Thanks for that idea! I had been thinking of such a concept 🤔
I love this idea! I already have been saving chips for a while and I really like this idea instead of just making blocks!
And thankyou for doing the math for us " non mathy" quilters🎉
@@JustGetitDoneQuilts I believe layer cakes should to be cut into two pieces @ 9.5"x5" so they would finish @ 9"x4.5".
Thanks so much Karen!!
Yeah! Chips that are calorie free! Awesome.
😂😂😂😂
The best!
My sewing friend and agree that it’s much easier to give up sugar than it is to give up fabric.
Carb free too!!

Your comment on rotary blade changing cracked me up - I now write with a sharpie on the blade to remind me of the date!
I had been sharpening this one for weeks. It was about time that I started fresh
Using a sharpie to mark the date is a great idea! Thanks for the tip
My quilt crew has been talking about their potato ship blocks. So I decided to see how many quilt patterns I could make using this block. I really enjoyed this one. It came together so fast and easy and with no seams to match up, it was pretty low stress too. Enjoy!!!
Karen I think you are a creative genius. Thank you for sharing your talent and expertise in such a kind and encouraging manner
That's a nice version using "chips". I like the idea of making the long strip sets to use as well vs making blocks to sew together in the original version. Adding those darker outlines adds interest and movement to the quilt as well and shows off the rectangle shape even more :)
I hadn't thought about aligning the center line. What a help. Thanks Karen!
Karen, I am amazed at how much I always learn from you. The weight at the end of the ruler is genius! Thanks for sharing all your knowledge, you have built an incredibly valuable channel for quilters! 🙂
GREAT description of what they are, sizes and options. This is actually the BEST description I’ve seen yet. Thank you! 🥰
🤗🤗🤗
For my father's 70th birthday this year I used the potato chip block for a quilt, the center block was plain white fabric my nieces and nephew painted with fabric paint and we all chose different fabric for the chips. 9x9 blocks with thin sashing so I didn't have to nest seams or worry about fabric matching. I love the sashing idea to avoid having to line the seams up!
I use the chips as leader/enders. It's amazing how quickly you have enough for a baby quilt or lap size quilt. It's like I make two quilts at once.
How did you know I cleaned up my mount scrapmore just last night and I have nice piles of 2-1/2” pieces, plus oodles of 6” and 5” strips? This is perfect right now. I can’t tell you how many of your stash-buster quilts I’ve made. Thank you!
those 5" strips are just perfect for this 🎉
I just love to watch aand listen to your videos. You explain everything so detailed and failurefriendly. Thank you!!!
mistakes happen...it's almost more about to recover
I made a beautiful snuggle size, truly scrappy potato chip quilt using leftover 4.5 × 2.5 chips.

Loved the tip to cut 4.5 inch strips, sew them together and cut them into 2.5 inch width. You think outside the box!
Just lovely! The colours work well and I love the dark blue. Sets it off Great
Can't wait to try this!! I love the jacket you are wearing - it's a great color for you!!
i have had this jacket so long. ❤️ the colour. I think it's my favourite. I purchased it off a deep discount rack at the GAP. I will be very sad when it's too thread worn to wear
I love how detailed your tutorials are - you think of everything we might run into. Your design turned out great!
Thanks, I am glad you think so.
Thanks Karen for another great stash-buster quilt! I like your idea of fussy cutting a center for the quilt. I might try it with a larger center block with a fabric I have. I appreciate all you do
Yes, I think the technique will work with any sized centre with sides that are even numbers
Thanks Karen! Videos like this is exactly why I watch your channel. In this political climate, I really need something to occupy my mind and your videos are like a cool drink of water on a very hot day.
Very timely program, I have a whole bag of 2 1/2 x 4 1/2-inch pieces. this is wonderful scrap pattern, thank you.
This looks like a great one to do and I have a whole bucket of 2 1/2” strips I’ve been looking for a quick and easy pattern to use them for! Thank you!
Thank you, that was the first time I’ve ever seen a Potato chip quilt sewn and assembled!😊
You’re welcome 😊
Thank you for your simple explanation of a potato chip block. I love how versatile it can be. Thank you.
it's a favourite of mine
Another fun variation on my block! My favorite size is 2.0 x 3.5 inch. Thanks Karen!
Thank you, Karen...especially for the free download!
yes - Thank you!
Your videos are fantastic!!! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. For giving free patterns of your fabulous quilts!

thanks so much for the pattern instructions. I am a new quilter and love your videos!
i am new to quilting, and i never heard of the potato chip block... now i have a new block for my scraps, yay!!
There are so many ways to use pieces this size! Just search for potato chip quilts or blocks. (They are addicting just like their namesake. 😉)
I have had fun with this block. Just finished my fourth variation. 3 have large floral 8.5" squares in the center and two layers of chips to finish at 16" square. Cider! I love those fabrics, and also have a significant stash of about 3 years old! Thanks Karen, terrific vid ❤
Thank you for these wonderful stashbusting videos. I look forward to sewing one or two.
Thanks Karen, maybe just maybe I’ll do this up with Christmas fabrics. I thinking I’d really enjoy that. Again thanks for sharing with us. 👍❤️😊

Love your shirt and jacket - that color is perfect on you! Thanks for the free patterns and video!
I love potato chip quilts more than the salty crisp ones! Thanks for another pattern to use the fabric chips in! 🥰
Thanks, Karen! Love it 🙂I especially like how you used occasional dark rows.
You look particularly beautiful in this video. That color looks really good on you and even your hair looks great. 😊
Thank you
Thanks for this. A great one for charity quilts!

What a great way to make use of scraps! Love this variation of potato chip blocks.
You make it look so easy. Thank you for your wonderful content.

I just love that brooch.
I am wearing that exact corduroy blazer today. I paused the video to confirm!
What fun! I have lots of jelly rolls that I’m eager to use. I started piecing some of them last week, but I must wait to finish it till after the holidays. I’m so slow at cutting that it’s ridiculous. 😂 Thanks for this fabulous idea, Karen! 😘

Thank you! You too!
And that is so pretty! I love it👏👏👏
Thanks for a new twist in the potato chip block/quilt! I have an OVERFLOWING bin of 2.5” strips and pieces! Also I’d like to mention you can vary the size of the chips as long as they’re twice as long as they are wide (taking into consideration seam allowance).
👍
this is great thank you 😊
i’ve been making a chevron one and a brick pavement one so far, and was wondering where to go next. i wanted to do this idea but it seemed quite daunting to just wing it. now i have an actual structure to work with. again thank you 🌸 so much 💕
I love that Karen "wings it" and videos as she goes. Those of us that cant always think outside the box appreciate the Karen Browns of the world.
Awesome Sauce, great job Karen!
This is great. I love scrappy quilts & need a new one for my bed. I think I've found the pattern to use.😊
this is so fun to put together
Love your color choices.
This is my fourth quilt with these fabrics. I have enjoyed working with the colours every time
Thank you!
Thanks for another great scrap busting pattern. I'm so glad to see another tutorial. I was beginning to think you switched to doing just podcasts, which isn't my favorite thing.
