OMG, thank you for the tips on the rag quilt. No more wrestling the entire quilt at the end. So much easier doing it by rows. It made my seams more accurate also. Thanks again.
Use a printer, set to Greyscale (black only) and copy any medium value fabric to see just how “light” or “dark” your fabric is. This works especially well if you need 3-4 values, especially if using different colors, for your quilt. I used this for Lover’s Knot. I had a multicolor print and three colors. I was able to see there wasn’t much of a difference between the dark purple and medium green originally chosen, and so changed the green to one which read lighter. 😊
Love your channel, very interesting, informative and inspiring. I am an old quilter 40 plus years but l always need some new ideas! Thanks keep posting such great content ❤
If you don’t have the medical tape, just put a rubber band around the ruler at its end It works just as good as the tape. Another thing working very well is a drop of hot glue used with the glue gun. Let a drop of glue fall on ruler, flatten it immediately with a knife and let dry completely. No slippage anymore. 😊
Good video, clear & concise, to the point. Tx for that. I just did a quilt pattern I bought from another youtuber which was all HST. I made a conscious effort to press well and nest my seams, but frustrated that I have bulky seams where my blocks come together.(I have 20 large blocks made up of 9 HSTs). My first time making a quilt using HSTs. I thought about pressing my seams open, searched for videos on how to eliminate bulky seams, everyone presses to the side. You are the only one that pressed your HST seams open. Next time I'm doing that. One last comment - the template you used to trim your HSTs, I bought one too. I'm still a little unsure as to how to use the markings, but have saved your video to watch again. It was a little hard to see on the dark fabric you first showed it on. Again, great video. Thanks again. Watching from Ontario, Canada.
I’m just taking my first quilting class in September and found your video. I love the tape trick and all the opinions you showed on the layout. Thank you!
Love love love this channel. So many tips Treasures she had gave us in this tutorial. What a sweetheart. She is very efficient very well explanatory making it easy to understand even for a beginner. She's a treasure.❤
Thanks! I haven’t quilted in awhile, I’m thrilled to see the new tools and techniques! (My grandmother would be blown away! She was born in 1896!) So I am a subscriber even though I haven’t pieced a quilt in a while, it looks tempting to start again….
Really helpful video. I saved it for later reference. I have watched others, and some were really good, but yours was calm, concise, and very easy to follow. I have the slotted trimmer, but it only came with one - I didn't know what I was doing when ordering it :D And, I did get a rotating mat, since I'm in an extremely small space. I've been a subscriber for a few months now, but hadn't seen this one yet. 👍👍👍😃
Thank you for watching. The Slotter Trimmer should definitely come with two pieces. Maybe check back with the company your ordered it from. Rotating mats are the best. Cheers.
Fantastic tip on the ruler. Very needful I've had a lot of problems with the ruler slipping and sliding very frustrating. Thank you so much for sharing that. It's a lifesaver LOL
Glad it helped! For longer rulers, considering putting the end of a 3 lb weight on the far end of the ruler. That with the tape helps tremendously for new quilters and those with hand mobility issues.
I have the slotted trimmer and I have to say it is the BEST one to use for the half square triangles! I used to dread lining up the square and trying to get my squares all the same. The slits for the dog ears are genius!
❤ I just came across your video, I like how you made your HSTS. You gave me some great ideas, and your idea of the tape is a good one. I have some in my medical kit and will apply that tape to my “slippy” rulers. Thanks for sharing. 😊
Really enjoyed seeing all the ways you turned the half square triangles. I also love the perfect slotted trimmer… It was a great investment. Looking forward to trying the medical tape on my rulers. Thanks for a great video!
Your CG ruler wouldn't slide around if your mat didn't bounce . You can make your HST and not have bias edges. If you don't like to sew the lines, as I don't, cut QST units and use your 1/4" foot. Works great, and yes you will be sewing on the bias, but it's easier to stitch the units afterwards without any square contortions
People with mobility issues often have ruler slips that have nothing to do with a bouncing mat. The tape is a very easy gripper that is inexpensive that solves that problem. Thanks for watching.
@@gailbroadaway3531 there is a little grip on the back of CG rulers that does help. But if you have any hand mobility issues it can sometimes be difficult to apply enough pressure to make the engraved grippers work. The tape seems to add more friction and prevent slipping a little better. Also using a weight on one end of the ruler helps tremendously.
Nurse here. If you use transpore tape, remove it after using and clean the back of the ruler with liquid soap or rubbing alcohol. That stuff will STICK and will be hard to get off if you just leave it.
Do not clean the ruler with rubbing alcohol as it could remove the markings on the ruler. If you need to remove the tape soap and water or undo works well. I do not remove the tape from the rulers as there is no reason to. Thanks for watching.
You are correct but I try to make my videos accessible to beginners as well. Beginners may find that step challenging. But it’s great you can skip a step. Thanks for watching.
@@jeanettegrinter668 you sure can. I have a quilt started using the same method. You can also sew around the outside and cut the blocks apart to make 4 patch blocks. I will hav to do a video on that one too. Just remember your triangles will be much smaller. Thanks for watching.
@@CabinQuilters thanks so much. Have been very sick and needed the motivation to start Gain. These are easy suggestions for quick results. Thank you again

Thank you so much for your videos. I just discovered your channel and woooeee. I absolutely love this and no kidding fall in love. Gorgeous 😍 I would love to have that pattern of your barn raising concept if you happened to sell it. I let out a gasp when I saw it. ❤
That is correct. They are trimmed to size before pressing and should be sewn into a quilt shortly after. You can also use a fabric stabilizer before handling. You don’t have to fear the bias. Thanks for watching.
Some customers may not have a ruler large enough to use the diagonal line but if you have a way that works for you then you should stick with it. Thanks for watching.
I have so much of that medical tape here that I swear I'll be wrapping Christmas gifts with it! Using it on the back of the ruler is genius; thanks for the tip. Regarding making your HSTs this way, how do you handle the resulting 4 bias edges so they don't stretch out of shape? Seems like you'd about have to starch the snot out of it so it doesn't go anywhere.
Starching helps. I tend to be very soft handed with my triangles, especially if they are large. So far so good for me. My trick is not to let them sit around loose too long. The more they are handled the more they tend to stretch. You could also use a fabric stabilizer like Terial magic to keep the triangles stabile until you are finished with the top and get a border on.
Oh, Penni! Did you iron on your cutting board? 😉Great vid! Thank you for giving me good reasons to cut into my pkgs of 10” squares!! I have such a hard time pressing seams open…paranoid about weakened seams. Old dog new trick😊
Love your trick with the medical tape!
I wish I could take credit for the idea... but we all need to thank a nurse. But its a great tip.

I'm with you. Easier to sew bias in middle and have 2 edges nonbias. Thanks for pointing that out.
I was curious about the ruler. It looked like a CG ruler to me, and those are known for not slipping, so wondered why the tape was necessary.
