    If you don’t have the medical tape, just put a rubber band around the ruler at its end It works just as good as the tape. Another thing working very well is a drop of hot glue used with the glue gun. Let a drop of glue fall on ruler, flatten it immediately with a knife and let dry completely. No slippage anymore. 😊

    Good video, clear & concise, to the point. Tx for that. I just did a quilt pattern I bought from another youtuber which was all HST. I made a conscious effort to press well and nest my seams, but frustrated that I have bulky seams where my blocks come together.(I have 20 large blocks made up of 9 HSTs). My first time making a quilt using HSTs. I thought about pressing my seams open, searched for videos on how to eliminate bulky seams, everyone presses to the side. You are the only one that pressed your HST seams open. Next time I'm doing that. One last comment - the template you used to trim your HSTs, I bought one too. I'm still a little unsure as to how to use the markings, but have saved your video to watch again. It was a little hard to see on the dark fabric you first showed it on. Again, great video. Thanks again. Watching from Ontario, Canada.

    Your CG ruler wouldn't slide around if your mat didn't bounce . You can make your HST and not have bias edges. If you don't like to sew the lines, as I don't, cut QST units and use your 1/4" foot. Works great, and yes you will be sewing on the bias, but it's easier to stitch the units afterwards without any square contortions

    • @CabinQuilters
      @CabinQuilters  Год назад +6

      People with mobility issues often have ruler slips that have nothing to do with a bouncing mat. The tape is a very easy gripper that is inexpensive that solves that problem. Thanks for watching.

    • @peggyr3862
      @peggyr3862 Год назад +1

      I'm with you. Easier to sew bias in middle and have 2 edges nonbias. Thanks for pointing that out.

    • @gailbroadaway3531
      @gailbroadaway3531 Год назад

      I was curious about the ruler. It looked like a CG ruler to me, and those are known for not slipping, so wondered why the tape was necessary.

    • @CabinQuilters
      @CabinQuilters  Год назад +1

      @@gailbroadaway3531 there is a little grip on the back of CG rulers that does help. But if you have any hand mobility issues it can sometimes be difficult to apply enough pressure to make the engraved grippers work. The tape seems to add more friction and prevent slipping a little better. Also using a weight on one end of the ruler helps tremendously.

    Or... you can save 50$, and just place a tape at an angle on a square ruler to the right size and tada! No slotted part but works well too.

      Not a bad idea for those that can figure out the math to place the tape. Thanks for watching.

    Initially cutting the sewn squares diagonally is an extra step. Just use the slotted trimmers to cut apart the sewn square pairs.

      You are correct but I try to make my videos accessible to beginners as well. Beginners may find that step challenging. But it’s great you can skip a step. Thanks for watching.

      The are called the Clearly Perfect slotted trimmers. They are a tool recommendation from me. Available from New Leaf Stitches.com

    I have so much of that medical tape here that I swear I'll be wrapping Christmas gifts with it! Using it on the back of the ruler is genius; thanks for the tip. Regarding making your HSTs this way, how do you handle the resulting 4 bias edges so they don't stretch out of shape? Seems like you'd about have to starch the snot out of it so it doesn't go anywhere.

    • @CabinQuilters

      Starching helps. I tend to be very soft handed with my triangles, especially if they are large. So far so good for me. My trick is not to let them sit around loose too long. The more they are handled the more they tend to stretch. You could also use a fabric stabilizer like Terial magic to keep the triangles stabile until you are finished with the top and get a border on.

    Quick question....once you've ironed do you cut off the bit of fabric that's hanging over the edges?

    • @CabinQuilters
      @CabinQuilters  Год назад +1

      You can. The trimmer I was using has slots to cut the “dog ears” off. I was too lazy to cut that part. Thanks for watching.

    I don't understand why you have all that fabric in the background to choose from and have to buy more. I've decided to use all my fabric on hand and I know I will still have fabric left when I die. I'm only splurging on wide backing fabric, but probably don't even need to do that!
    Thanks for the video. Have a great day!!😊

    Unfortunately that makes all your edges on the bias.

    • @CabinQuilters
      @CabinQuilters  Год назад

      It does but they are trimmed perfectly and ready for their last seam in the quilt. Less maneuvering of the pieces. Thanks for watching.

      @@CabinQuilters would starch make the bias seams more stable?

    • @CabinQuilters
      @CabinQuilters  Год назад

      @@omacindy1860 yes starch would help. Or a fabric stabilizer like Terial Magic.

    • @ShadowMoonFarms

      I'd rather take the extra step of marking diagonal lines and not have to deal with the bias edges myself.
