How to Make A Scrappy Trip Around the World Quilt Block

- Hi, Everyone! I'm making a scrappy trip around the world quilt and wanted to share with you how I make a block.
A few things I refer to in the video-
The fabric I'm using is called Holiday Cheer by My Mind's Eye for Riley Blake Designs. This collection is due to arrive in quilt shops in May 2023.

Another great tutorial--thanks Jessica! I suppose it is a catch-22 thing…I would probably dial down my stitch length to under 2.0 to keep the seams from unraveling, but then probably harder to pick out the seam. Hmmm…
You are correct! For this size pieces, I find a 2 to 2.25 the best. You could do whatever length you’d like though!

I just made this quilt for my mother in law. I said I would never make it again because of all the un picking, but thinking of it as a take along project and doing one block at a time while doing another project the way u are doing it makes it much more appealing. Thanks I want to try it again now.

It always cracks me up that to "unpick" a seam is the same as to "pick" a seam and remove it. Like in raveling and unraveling. The fabric will ravel, which is called unraveling. English is a fascinating language!

This is great! Guessing the same process could be used with larger (wider) strips. Our church group cuts everything into squares then sees them all back together. This would save a lot of time.

❤Back in the day, Eleanor Burns developed this technique. She was known for “Quilt in a Day” series. I made 3 of these trip around the world quilts using this technique.

Sew your strips together with a shorter stitch length and they'll be less likely to unsew themselves when you get to sewing the strip sets together. Thank you for your video!

Happy that your video came up in my youtube feed today. Thx for very clear instructions. (I need that). My daughter made a quilt before I did, & she used beautiful pastels/jelly rolls & the pattern called "Just Squares", for her daughter's bed. I think i was more enamored with it than she was! I think this pattern is similar. I'd like to try it once i finish 2 UFO's. I recvd pretty Christmas fat quarters as a gift this past year that might work well. Your handiwork is very nice. Excellent tutorial, Jessica, thank you. So I need 23 fat quarters to get 160 strips (with one left over). Then just do a mix-and-match to get a good distribution of lights and darks, just so there’s some contrast between each strip and the one beside it. I like the size of this quilt top, so I’ll definitely have to add it to my “must make” list of quilts.

When strip piecing, especially, using a smaller stitch length eliminates a lot of your seams coming open. I use at a maximum 2.0, most often 1.8. They are slightly harder to pick out, but worth not having to worry about your seams being compromised. Thanks for the great tutorial.

Such a wonderful presentation of a time efficient way to make these blocks. Thank you also for your relaxed attitudes to the little fudges we sometimes gave to make when stitching the components. I had an initial teacher of patchwork twenty years ago who really put me off when she demanded excellence and showed no patience with our beginner mistakes. You truly are inspirational!!!!

In 2020, I made this pattern twice, in small and large lap sizes. I used additional strip sets to tie four blocks together to make four quadrants and more strip sets to sew the quadrants together. I used some nontraditional Halloween fabric by RSS. It turned out so cool that I almost kept it. My brother's family loved it! I want to make another for myself. I love that it's fq friendly. Happy sewing!

Thanks! I did not use the same colors, in the same position, in each of my blocks. You can do it anyway you'd like though!

Thank you! My mat is designed by Christopher Thompson for Riley Blake Designs. They were out of stock for a while but I believe they are back in stock now (or will be really soon). Any fabric store that sells Riley Blake fabric can order it for you of they don't already have it in stock. I love the Oliso iron so much- both the full size and the mini.
