My mom quilted, too. I never paid attention, and how I regret it now. She died in 2007, and I only just recently, on the 13th anniversary of her death had the strength to open up a barrel of scraps she left me. I'm now muddling through sorting, washing and ironing all the scraps and beginning a scrappy quilt.
I am now a subscriber thanks to Arne and Carlos :) Thanks to them, I've been enjoying all of your videos. I made a quilt for my daughter 30 years ago with the help of a friend and have never attempted because I don't trust the accuracy of my cutting and seam skills, but this one looks easy enough that I might try to do a wall hanging. All of your quilts are lovely especially the one you made for your mom because of the memories that go with it. Keep making videos about your quilts :)

Good afternoon flower, i had a wonderful mum too that taught me every craft that came to her. She was a perfectionist that liked things to be the best that they could be, but she was just so talented. Watching you make this Trip Around the World block, in the colours that you have, it made me think having listened to you telling us about your wonderful mum that she would have loved this block finished into a quilt as well. The trip around the world quilt was the first quilt that i fell in love with and hope to make it some day for myself. Weren't we sew (LOL)lucky to have such talented people in our lives to learn from. I am still on my first quilt(my sewing machines broke down, both of them) which is for my autistic grandson. He loves Toy Story, so that is the materials of the Disappearing Nine Patch that i have been making for him. I only have two more quilting seams to sew, before binding it. He has a double bed, even though he is only just turned 6, so it was a mammoth task doing it with only a little sewing space in my machines, but i've managed doing it from the middle outwards. The quilts are just beautiful...and such a nice memory. I was thinking of my mom today, too. She did wonderful embroidery..she would do dish towel sets and she gave many away as gifts. A quilting cousin made hers into a quilt and last year she sent it to me..I treasure it. Today we are getting snow..AGAIN...and I was feeling pretty down (it was 70 degrees yesterday!) After my mom died I kept some of her supplies and today I decided to sort through it...I found a towel she had started. It has two little bluebirds embroidered and felt a bit like a hug telling me spring will eventually get here! I dusted off my supplies and am going to finish it! Mom memories are the very best!
I grew up in a house where embroidered items and other handmade objects were everywhere. As a teenager, I was asking mom about a couple of my favorite pieces, and if she still had the patterns etc. .. I was informed she did not do those- my dad did- as a boy.... bluebirds on a pillowcase and a bedspread with a cross-stitched basket overflowing with embroidered flowers and other flower sprays scattered all over. ... thanks for the reminder of treasured memories. yes, our memories of our loved ones are the absolute best.

I started one several years before she passed but never got the chance to finish it.It would have been my first quilt. What a beautiful story about you and your mum's shared love of quilting! My mom passed in 2014 (she was 100). She was an amazing seamstress (and cook) and she made quilts and had a handquilting suspension type frame she hung from the ceiling in the spare bedroom. I came late to them and my brothers as my parents were in their 40s. So though I remember her quilting on that frame, what I really remember is the zillions of quilts she made from polyester double knit fabric scraps. Those quilts will be around forever!! Mom never taught me to do anything but I learned through osmosis, I suppose. Anyway, I was making a spider web/string pieced quilt and told her I was making it for her. I'd gotten to the quilting and was doing that on the machine and was about done by the time I told her it was for her. She told me that she didn't want it. I was crushed! I tossed it in a basket - unfinished. My goal for 2020 is to finish it and give it to someone who will love it. I loved my mom and she adored me but she really had a way of crushing your spirit without meaning to.

I made a quilt for my mom years ago and when she passed, I brought it home and it's with me always. Great snuggler when it's freezing cold! I did a log cabin. First quilt I ever finished. I'm sorry to say that you made me cry ... the love for your Mother touched my heart. I have also lost my Mother and would dearly love her to be here so I could make her a quilt. I would put a beautiful heart in the center of it to show her that she would always remain in my heart. I love the quilts (even though like your Mum green is not my "favourite" colour. But also admit that it has it's place of "necessity" in some quilts.) :) You made me feel like I was sitting with you having a tea and watching and learning as you very kindly taught everyone how to make your beautiful quilt. You make all your quilts with such Love. You were very blessed to have such a beautiful soul that you could call Mother. She must have been such a wonderful, caring and giving lady. God bless Mothers everywhere ... especially "yours" and "mine". :) And Thank You for not only being my Teacher but also making me feel like we were "old friends" ... (emphasis NOT on "old" lol)... What a precious thing to do with your mom. A very nice memory to cherish. As for the trip around the world........Girl.....nothing to it....😨........hahaha.....Maybe if you've done it a few times. But never seen it done before.....hmmm.....I know I can do it, slowly....with your video as a guide. Thank you. I think it would be lovely in a pallet of aqua. (my favorite color, anywhere from seafoam green to watery blue. I'm a water lover) You are giving me a lot of inspiration, but I am still knitting socks. I'm getting really good at it.😉
people will always need socks! I find that even now - after making a fair few of these - I still need to number them - it saves getting into a muddle - just take your time and you'll be fine! xxx

But knitting has kept me busy of late and I really needed this refresher course for the quilt I’m going to make for my disabled son. We had a big party together for my 50th and her 75th, we always celebrated together. We were very close ❤ When Mum passed, I gave her quilt to my beautiful niece, her first born grand child. Hello Kate..I must tell you my story about my very first effort with the 'Trip Around the World' quilt. I was very young and excited to get started, but I cut all my little blocks and started in the very middle...and continued my trip around the world sewing every stitch by hand and going around and around that very first block. Fabric I used was double knit and worked up quite nicely. My daughter still has that quilt. Put SO much work into it! I do love that pattern tho.
Thank you for sharing the loving memory of you and your mom. The quilts are beautiful. The first quilt I made for myself was trip around the world 40+ years ago and later made my mom one. I love the design of the one you made out of Kaffe Fasset’s fabric. I have never seen that design for trip around the world.
Lovely quilts that you and your Mom swapped. I love this idea. I'm going to plan on swapping with my Sister Julie. Our mom hand quilted many, many years ago. We lost her at the young age of 53 in an auto accident. She and I have carried on her love of sewing/quilting/cross stitch. Thank you again for sharing this will us.

I love the story about your Mum, and the photo of the two of you is wonderful. The music you use in this video is bittersweet for me. I had puppy last year but we sadly lost him aged just 1 year old. The very first video I have on my channel is a montage of photos of him set to that music.

Oh Kate what a fantastic story, both of the quilts are gorgeous but I have to say on I’m your mums side about greens, I love purples, lilacs & mauve but my absolute favourite colours are black, grey & white which I know your not a great fan of, the quilt your mum made you and the design she done is really lovely and the same with the one you made your mum, I thought that was a fantastic idea of you both making each other’s quilts . What an absolutely brilliant idea to exchange quilts with your Mum. My Mum doesn't make quilts but she sure enjoys the ones my sister and I have made for her. I infected/got my sister into quilt making. She doesn't have the quilting bug quite as bad as me though. When I attended my first quiltmaking class I just knew I had found what I had been looking for. Thank you for your video. I just know I would get muddled very easily so I very much appreciated your tips on how to keep things organised.
maybe you could try this with you and your sister? and yes - anything that can keep me from getting muddled is a good idea - I'm easily confused!!! xxx
@@thelasthomelyhouse we sort of did. She is fabulous at crocheting and I am not so when I received a crochet project at Christmas we did a swap. She made the scarf for me and I made a quilt top for her. She enjoys crocheting more than me and I enjoy quilt making more than her. I loved being able to make that quilt top for her.

I just recently found your RUclips channel videos. I've been quilting for years and I'm always looking for new ideas and inspiration. I made a Trip Around the World quilt years ago and enjoyed making it very much. I have to tell you that I loved your One Direction picture snuck in there as a visual reminder to press seams in "one direction" when appropriate. I love the band One Direction. I'm a 60 something year old woman who has been a fan of the band for about 9 years. Now I believe I will be playing their CDs while I piece and sew my quilts. Somewhere in recent history I saw it on a Facebook posting, downloaded the picture and set it as my screen background and just stared at it, trying to figure out how it was made. Such a simple way to make Trip Around the World squares. I have two batik jelly rolls calling my name. I loved the story of your Mum and the quilts. They both were lovely.
What a wonderful story of the quilt and your mum. I was making a baby block quilt for my mom in her favorite purples and lavendars, but she passed before I could finish it. I need to fi ish it for me. I made a Trip Around the World quilt in the year 2000 with 2 1/2 inch blocks from quilters exchange from around the world, 2000 blocks on top and on the back (backing has 2000 written all over the fabric) I put all the signature squares I received with the blocks.

It is very soothing to the soul to listen to you talk, cook, love on your cats, sew and work in your garden. I love your pink room.

For my first marriage she gave us a "Around the World" quilt. It was in what I call autumn colors. Browns and yellows.

Oh my favorite pattern! A large central pattern like for your Mum's quilt is the first quilt I made. Best bang of a big effect for your buck, only straight seams, and it looks so complicated but isn't. LOVE.

Your video about the quilt your mum made for you and added her tag on the back to you inspired me to make a grandmothers garden quilt for each of my daughters. Brought back memories of my grandmothers quilts. My mom never did handstitching only sewing clothes for the 4 girls in my family. The video brought tears to my eyes and so grateful that you shared. What a wonderful idea. I have a quilt my grandma made me. My mom embroidered a table cloth with the 12 days of Christmas on it. I treasure them. I love the quilts and the memories you have of you and your mom.
what a lovely thing to share with your Mum who looks like a real treasure...I recently lost my darling mother Margaret at 87...its one of the hardest of life's lessons, losing ones mother...but she was ready to go to her heaven and I was lucky to have her until I was 63 and she left me with 5 siblings (+ 1 decd) so she had a very full life with 7 kids and lots of extended family...Marg was a cross stitcher (as was Dad) & I treasure the ones I have that they made & one of my Grans..thankyou for sharing your lovely story and your crafts Kate...I was looking for Norma :)
my Mum was 93, never one for giving up on a project! she had a great life. it felt really appropriate for her to go when she did. It's the people here who are telling me about their own child, or a young parent ... thats where the tragedy lies and I can't imagine what that must be like. xxxxx

She is in hospice care for cancer and has been suffering a great deal of pain. I am an only child and my mother always encouraged my creativity and taught me to sew when I was quite young. It was comforting to watch your video and see your lovely quilts.❤️

There are so many challenges we face - thinking of you Roseanna as you care for your Mum - harder when it is just you - I have two brothers and some really great nieces and nephews, plus my own three kids - I think we cared for my Mum at the end pretty well - but everyone has their own way of dealing with the difficult times in our lives - I hope you have some good people taking care of you - Paloma for one - I love how these commenters become a source of friendship - its rather amazing! xxx

She came home for Christmas last year and her gift to me was fabric and her time. We made a quilt together and got it done before she had to go home, I will always treasure the time we had working together and the quilt we made.
Hello Kate ~ That is the quilt around the world block that I would like to try some day. It is the very middle section that I am stumped on. I did try Eleanor Burn`s quilt around the world layout which does give you a very uneven top and bottom. At least mine came out that way. Plus she used the full length of the strips to sew into a tube. If you decide to make another quilt your way please show what you do for the middle. TIA. Enjoy your week and thanks for the video.
Busy Beaver Just a tip.If you are sewing the full fabric width and strips, you can get bowing or curving. To avoid this alternate when sewing the strips. One, top to bottom, the next bottom to top, the next top to bottom, etc. First time I sewed strips, it bowed so much it looked like a rainbow. So much, that the teacher asked for it as an example of what not to do, lol..happy quilting
oh - that's always a bad sign if the teacher uses it as what NOT to do! I have more info on this block - I'll add that in when we get started with the Liberty series - xxx

I started one several years before she passed but never got the chance to finish it.It would have been my first quilt. What a beautiful story about you and your mum's shared love of quilting! My mom passed in 2014 (she was 100). She was an amazing seamstress (and cook) and she made quilts and had a handquilting suspension type frame she hung from the ceiling in the spare bedroom. I came late to them and my brothers as my parents were in their 40s. So though I remember her quilting on that frame, what I really remember is the zillions of quilts she made from polyester double knit fabric scraps. Those quilts will be around forever!! Mom never taught me to do anything but I learned through osmosis, I suppose. Anyway, I was making a spider web/string pieced quilt and told her I was making it for her. I'd gotten to the quilting and was doing that on the machine and was about done by the time I told her it was for her. She told me that she didn't want it. I was crushed! I tossed it in a basket - unfinished. My goal for 2020 is to finish it and give it to someone who will love it. I loved my mom and she adored me but she really had a way of crushing your spirit without meaning to.

I made a quilt for my mom years ago and when she passed, I brought it home and it's with me always. Great snuggler when it's freezing cold! I did a log cabin. First quilt I ever finished. Imagine making a quilt for a master seamstress. Kind of like bringing coals to Newcastle!!! Did I really see a pic of the boy band, One Direction???? Honestly Kate, you are so funny! @@thelasthomelyhouse I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed but it's not that easy to pull the wool over my head. A person HAS to be sharp if they're going to keep up with you! Well, it's snowing again!!. We're getting the edges of the storm going throught the midwest up through Minnesota and into Ontario, Canada. Is it EVER going to be spring?? I'm sorry to say that you made me cry ... the love for your Mother touched my heart. I have also lost my Mother and would dearly love her to be here so I could make her a quilt. I would put a beautiful heart in the center of it to show her that she would always remain in my heart. I love the quilts (even though like your Mum green is not my "favourite" colour. But also admit that it has it's place of "necessity" in some quilts.) :) You made me feel like I was sitting with you having a tea and watching and learning as you very kindly taught everyone how to make your beautiful quilt. You make all your quilts with such Love. You were very blessed to have such a beautiful soul that you could call Mother. She must have been such a wonderful, caring and giving lady. God bless Mothers everywhere ... especially "yours" and "mine". :) And Thank You for not only being my Teacher but also making me feel like we were "old friends" ... (emphasis NOT on "old" lol)... As for the trip around the world........Girl.....nothing to it....😨........hahaha.....Maybe if you've done it a few times. But never seen it done before.....hmmm.....I know I can do it, slowly....with your video as a guide. Thank you. I think it would be lovely in a pallet of aqua. (my favorite color, anywhere from seafoam green to watery blue. I'm a water lover) You are giving me a lot of inspiration, but I am still knitting socks. I'm getting really good at it.😉
people will always need socks! I find that even now - after making a fair few of these - I still need to number them - it saves getting into a muddle - just take your time and you'll be fine! xxx

But knitting has kept me busy of late and I really needed this refresher course for the quilt I’m going to make for my disabled son. That’s awesome Kate, I’ve heard about and seen the trip around the world block, but have never seen it being made, thank you. 😊 I absolutely loved the photos of you and your dear Mum and the beautiful quilts you made for each other, very precious. ❤ I designed & made my darling Mum a quilt for her 75th birthday (& made the same one for myself,) mums birthday was the 10th and mine the 14th of October, she was 25 years old when I was born. We had a big party together for my 50th and her 75th, we always celebrated together. We were very close ❤ When Mum passed, I gave her quilt to my beautiful niece, her first born grand child. Hello Kate..I must tell you my story about my very first effort with the 'Trip Around the World' quilt. I was very young and excited to get started, but I cut all my little blocks and started in the very middle...and continued my trip around the world sewing every stitch by hand and going around and around that very first block. Fabric I used was double knit and worked up quite nicely. My daughter still has that quilt. Put SO much work into it! I do love that pattern tho.

I love the design of the one you made out of Kaffe Fasset’s fabric. I have never seen that design for trip around the world.

Lovely quilts that you and your Mom swapped. I love this idea. I'm going to plan on swapping with my Sister Julie. Our mom hand quilted many, many years ago. We lost her at the young age of 53 in an auto accident. She and I have carried on her love of sewing/quilting/cross stitch. Thank you again for sharing this will us.

I love the story about your Mum, and the photo of the two of you is wonderful. The music you use in this video is bittersweet for me. I had puppy last year but we sadly lost him aged just 1 year old. The very first video I have on my channel is a montage of photos of him set to that music.

Oh Kate what a fantastic story, both of the quilts are gorgeous but I have to say on I’m your mums side about greens, I love purples, lilacs & mauve but my absolute favourite colours are black, grey & white which I know your not a great fan of, the quilt your mum made you and the design she done is really lovely and the same with the one you made your mum, I thought that was a fantastic idea of you both making each other’s quilts . What an absolutely brilliant idea to exchange quilts with your Mum. My Mum doesn't make quilts but she sure enjoys the ones my sister and I have made for her. I infected/got my sister into quilt making. She doesn't have the quilting bug quite as bad as me though. When I attended my first quiltmaking class I just knew I had found what I had been looking for. Thank you for your video. I just know I would get muddled very easily so I very much appreciated your tips on how to keep things organised.
maybe you could try this with you and your sister? and yes - anything that can keep me from getting muddled is a good idea - I'm easily confused!!! xxx
@@thelasthomelyhouse we sort of did. She is fabulous at crocheting and I am not so when I received a crochet project at Christmas we did a swap. She made the scarf for me and I made a quilt top for her. She enjoys crocheting more than me and I enjoy quilt making more than her. I loved being able to make that quilt top for her.

I just recently found your RUclips channel videos. I've been quilting for years and I'm always looking for new ideas and inspiration. I made a Trip Around the World quilt years ago and enjoyed making it very much. I have to tell you that I loved your One Direction picture snuck in there as a visual reminder to press seams in "one direction" when appropriate. I love the band One Direction. I'm a 60 something year old woman who has been a fan of the band for about 9 years. Now I believe I will be playing their CDs while I piece and sew my quilts. Thank you so very much for your ideas and inspiration!

What a wonderful story of the quilt and your mum. I was making a baby block quilt for my mom in her favorite purples and lavendars, but she passed before I could finish it. I need to fi ish it for me.
I made a Trip Around the World quilt in the year 2000 with 2 1/2 inch blocks from quilters exchange from around the world, 2000 blocks on top and on the back (backing has 2000 written all over the fabric) I put all the signature squares I received with the blocks.

That certain quilt block brought back so many memories of my grandmother. She too was a hand quilter. For my first marriage she gave us a "Around the World" quilt. It was in what I call autumn colors. Browns and yellows.

Oh my favorite pattern! A large central pattern like for your Mum's quilt is the first quilt I made. Best bang of a big effect for your buck, only straight seams, and it looks so complicated but isn't. LOVE.
PS: The quilt-making-and-swapping story is so special. How I wish I had that experience with my crafting life. You're a lucky and talented one, Kate!

Brought back memories of my grandmothers quilts. My mom never did handstitching only sewing clothes for the 4 girls in my family. The video brought tears to my eyes and so grateful that you shared. What a wonderful idea. I have a quilt my grandma made me. My mom embroidered a table cloth with the 12 days of Christmas on it. I treasure them. I love the quilts and the memories you have of you and your mom.
what a lovely thing to share with your Mum who looks like a real treasure...I recently lost my darling mother Margaret at 87...its one of the hardest of life's lessons, losing ones mother...but she was ready to go to her heaven and I was lucky to have her until I was 63 and she left me with 5 siblings (+ 1 decd) so she had a very full life with 7 kids and lots of extended family...Marg was a cross stitcher (as was Dad) & I treasure the ones I have that they made & one of my Grans..thankyou for sharing your lovely story and your crafts Kate...I was looking for Norma :)
my Mum was 93, never one for giving up on a project! she had a great life. it felt really appropriate for her to go when she did. It's the people here who are telling me about their own child, or a young parent ... thats where the tragedy lies and I can't imagine what that must be like. xxxxx

Thank you, Kate for sharing your story of your Mom. I watched this after an especially difficult day with my Mom at the hospital. She is in hospice care for cancer and has been suffering a great deal of pain. I am an only child and my mother always encouraged my creativity and taught me to sew when I was quite young. It was comforting to watch your video and see your lovely quilts.❤️

There are so many challenges we face - thinking of you Roseanna as you care for your Mum - harder when it is just you - I have two brothers and some really great nieces and nephews, plus my own three kids - I think we cared for my Mum at the end pretty well - but everyone has their own way of dealing with the difficult times in our lives - I hope you have some good people taking care of you - Paloma for one - I love how these commenters become a source of friendship - its rather amazing! xxx

Thank you for sharing your story about your quilt swap with your mom. My youngest daughter is a quilter and she lives in another state. She came home for Christmas last year and her gift to me was fabric and her time. We made a quilt together and got it done before she had to go home, I will always treasure the time we had working together and the quilt we made.

Hello Kate ~ That is the quilt around the world block that I would like to try some day. It is the very middle section that I am stumped on. I did try Eleanor Burn`s quilt around the world layout which does give you a very uneven top and bottom. At least mine came out that way. Plus she used the full length of the strips to sew into a tube. If you decide to make another quilt your way please show what you do for the middle. TIA. Enjoy your week and thanks for the video.
Busy Beaver Just a tip.If you are sewing the full fabric width and strips, you can get bowing or curving. To avoid this alternate when sewing the strips. One, top to bottom, the next bottom to top, the next top to bottom, etc. First time I sewed strips, it bowed so much it looked like a rainbow. So much, that the teacher asked for it as an example of what not to do, lol..happy quilting
oh - that's always a bad sign if the teacher uses it as what NOT to do! I have more info on this block - I'll add that in when we get started with the Liberty series - xxx
