BMW e46 M3 Öhlins Road & Track - SUPER UNSCIENTIFIC First Impressions

  • In this video I compare my "OEM" e46 M3 CSL spec suspension to the Öhlins Road & Track Dual Flow Valve system.
My initial idea was to show the differences between the two setups, via the camera movement and my feedback but, a combination of lack of brains (because I was going much faster with the Öhlins VS the CSL suspension) and lack of overall awareness, the differences can only be understood by my commentary.
As I said, my first impression was a bit tainted due to the fact that I was with a clear idea that it would become tremendously supple, which it would never, but with further driving, I could understand how improved ride was.
Also, plenty of people say that you should allow 5-10 minutes of driving, before making judgment on the actual effects the clicks had on the ride.
Nonetheless, I hope you enjoy the video and if you have any question, feel free to ask.
A full review coming soon... ish.

This is a great review! I would love a follow up video now that you have had some time with the suspension and have had a chance to try some different setups.

Nice review. I’m pondering the same set up. You seem impressed in the way I think I’d be, I hope. Less crashy, more composure and quality to the ride.

Nice review, as a M3 E46 owner equipped with these Ohlins , I am a bit disappointed by them tbh... I tried several setup already and I find these coilers way way too stiff for the road. Except if it is super flat. The car copes maybe well with bumps dynamically but the level of stiffness is just annoying, and you pray before hitting a slight hole...according to the BMW specialist who fitted this ,a KW V3 would be more compliant on the road (Ohlins road and track... it says tack 🙂) . I have about the same setup as you but I will have to try to soften the hydraulics even more because that is just a disaster...
The "problem" would be the spring rate, and the gas pre charge inside the damper. Then as you mentioned, I had the same problem, for the front I am almost at the max height of these coilovers , otherwise with the standard setup I would remain planted at the first speed bump. It says everything about the destination of these coilers...
Now the positives, a car much more planted and precise and stable when cornering or drifting .But you need a nearly perfect road...

      Thank you for your comment!
I'm yet to do a full review on these, but I've had some time to experience them, and I'm happy with the end result, very much so. I'm still running 12F and 10R, and I can safely say that it deals with bumps and creases on the road very well. Perhaps you had the mindset that it would be super comfy. I know I did a little bit, but what I began to understand was the sophistication of dampening. It now deals with imperfections very nicely, and (in my case) more comfortably than before. The car is skipping less and the rear end is more planted. As I have it now, it's harder to get it sideways, because of the amount of grip, as I need to make the rear end a bit more stiff I think, but I haven't tried it yet.
I don't know which roads you're driving on, but I can say that I'm happy with my suspensions' breath of ability.
About the ride height, to me it's dumb... I'm riding on full height at the front, which will limit the adjustment that you can make, and will reduce droop travel. I'm running lower than my OEM CSL suspension, but now by much. I don't hit speed bumps or anything to be honest, but I'd like the to be more "headroom". I know a company makes a spacer, to raise the position where the sock sits, effectively raising the car, but I will not try it, at least I don't have the need currently.
I'm sorry to hear that you're not happy with your Ohlins setup, but I think that it's more on the comfort side of things.

@@DriftingSquirrel Hi, thanks for your reply, yes it is more on the comfy side. The road here in Belgium are not really good, I was expecting something more compliant especially with the "DFV", but I will soften it a bit more and continue to look for a nice setup for my liking...I was coming from a KW street comfort on a BMW 130i ( last experience with coilers).I still need to fix my diff which just collapsed after being rebuilt 9000 kms ago...

@@Gaara_du-desert. Ahhh the SC must be really nice. You're now in a mindset of that type of coilover. Perhaps that has had an impact also. I wish you the best of luck to get the suspension to a point that you like and enjoy it.

I have this setup on a Miata. They're quite good, but not the best (for the miata). I was limited by TUV certification. If it was today, I might have gone for the KW setup, although they are much, much heavier.

I can’t comment on whether these are the best or not, especially since that will vary based on what you want to do with the car, but I can vouch for the fact that they’re very well engineered and the dampening is very sophisticated/expensive feeling, allowing the car to behave super well on secondary roads with bumps, track, normal driving etc

Does Anyone know specific to E46 M3 Convertible, If Ohlins would be a better and more lasting suspension VS KW V2 or V3?
I am debating to know which one to purchase and install on my 06 M3 Cab.
    I appreciate your opinions.
