  • Öhlins Racing transformed my Porsche 718 Cayman T to a proper GT car. I was shocked by how much the chassis from Öhlins made an impact on the character of my car. I rest my case.

    Same experience. When I fitted the Ohlins R&T to my e90M3 the car was totally transformed. I was dumbstruck ! Absolutely astounded at how much better the car felt. If you are going to modify your car a top quality set of coilovers will do more for the car than any other single modification. You have to do it in order to experience it. Should be the first modification anyone does to their car IMO :)

      Ziggy Freud Did you keep standard alignment? What damper settings did you go for?

    • @ziggyfreud5357
      @ziggyfreud5357 3 года назад +1

      @@Franzino I was intending to use the car as a daily driver come track car but I bought a GT3RS and use the M3 as my daily. I eventually put the car back to standard alignment as I was destroying front tyres. I have an extra 0.5 degrees of neg camber on the front. I run the Ohlins at 13 clicks. That might still be too firm for some for a daily but I like a responsive car - response > comfort :) The few times that I did track it I had the dampers on 3 clicks all around - the track surface is very smooth. When I was tarting up the car I should have gone straight to quality coilovers but I tried some Eibach springs first - they were good but if the coilovers are within the budget range do that. Most amazing transformation ever. Coilovers and some racing rotors and pads will give you 95% of the NA cars ability - money well spent imo - happy modding.

    The Öhlins that come standard with my V60 Polestar transform a heavy mundane station wagon that meanders and teeters between understeer and oversteer and struggles to maintain a cornering line into a super stable, planted and always-unfazed track weapon… the Öhlins effect is real 🤷🏻‍♂️
    Every time I get a loaner base model sedan without the Öhlins I get into serious trouble because of the amount of secondary body motion and pitch and roll… not every driver needs or appreciates the need for such stability but there’s a reason certain AMG Black Series cars come equipped with Öhlins and why Audi RS5 competition gets KW dampers… you can’t beat the impressive valving on a well-sorted set of coilovers… or at least Bosch doesn’t want you to think that when it puts its electronically adjustable dampers in every car…
    Only dampers more impressive than these is the multimatic spool valve dampers such as those equipped on the ZL1 1LE 👀

    Great review! I keep hearing rumors of the new 4ltr GT4 engine possibly being used in other Porsches. If they put that engine in a different Cayman, I will absolutely sell my 991.2 and buy one! I loved my 981 Cayman and can only imagine it with the NA 4 liter engine. Since the new GT4 won’t be a “limited” edition, I can’t imagine they would have developed that engine only for that one car. We’ll see what happens. Another wonderful video, Janko!

    Again the dampers are great and worth it specially at the track but dont be expecting the full range of clicks to be useful. I spent the time to dyno them. My recommendation is that for any any aftermarket damper you get run a dyno on them to really understand what the adjustment is providing .... they are normally called click run.

      @@martinmendiolamm very well, though I’ve really only gotten to play with it in a limited way (a freeway cloverleaf that is-miraculously-set up so that you can do four loops rapid-fire). The car is much better on/in city potholes. I have it set firm, but not too firm (daily driver, no plans to track the car). Was going to test it out next month on Tail of the Dragon in Tennessee, but change of plans may take me to Colorado instead. So the true reveal of whether or not the R&Ts were worth it might have to wait.

    The Ohlins are pretty good and certainly great improvement over stock specially when tracking the car. But there is drawback by using same valve to adjust compression and rebound .... the rebound increases exponentially specially close to 10 clicks from full stiff. At this point rebound is excessive and useless....in order words the useful adjustment is only ~ 10 clicks from soft.

    I just ordered a Cayman T last week, and yes it’s after watching your video as a reference. I have a Toyota 86 and also married it with ohlins DFV. I admit it’s a huge change compared with stock suspension(which is prone to oversteer a lot). However I wonder how much better ohlins DFV compared to porsche sport suspension. Porsche is said to be the best chassis maker after all. Is ohlins DFV firmer? Has ohlins engineer changed the alignment?

I was/am considering these Ohlins R&T for my 997.1 S X51, but I'm not sure how they will influence comfort / ride quality on the road, because I drive on road mostly (like, 99.9% of the time). Would you care to share some more thoughts on this setup for street usage? Perhaps I should add that currently I'm riding on old/somewhat worn M030 sport suspension (non-PASM, 20mm lowered and stiffer springs) which was installed in the factory back in 2006. I find it a bit harsh and jittery. Hence looking to overhaul.

      @@JankoLind I had mixed thoughts about my Ohlin R/T's I got for my 2016 M3. While the damping was AMAZING, I found for the street under the bigger bumps and dips in the freeway, it would launch my head into the headliner on the rebound stroke. It would also activate the traction control system on said large bumps at speed. I played with all click settings and maybe they just had too high a spring rate, but I wasn't impressed as I should have been for the money spent. Maybe they did a better job on the Porsche line-up, but for the F80 M3 platform, it was too harsh for daily driving when you hit the bigger bumps.

    • @brianyue9633
      @brianyue9633 3 года назад

    • @TRZ0612
      @TRZ0612 3 года назад +1

      Brian Yue it was definitely worth it from a chassis control and rear-end control standpoint. That was the reason I bought them in the first place.
      BMW did a HORRIBLE job tuning the stock shocks. The lack of rebound control was embarrassing for a //M product.
      I was stuck in the M3 on a 3 year lease, so I did it to not hate the car for 3 years.
      If I had to do it again , I would do it and experiment with different spring rates. That option wasn’t available when I got mine as Ohlin had just released them and there was no spring rate options.
      Although if I knew what I know now, I would have skipped the F series M3 all together, as that was only one of many issues I had with it.

    Janko, the car is looking great! I would love to do this to my 991.2 gts but ill have to wait until I'm done putting the money aside for an exhaust before I can even start saving for dampers..after this, I don't know what upgrade to get 1st?

      @Janko Lind I looked up the Ohlins suspension price for my GT4 and they are very expensive, $9300 US. I have not felt any need for better dampening during my summer track weekend events. I did upgrade to Ohlins on a Miata I used to own years ago and It truly was a night and day change from stock. Ohlins are excellent. The biggest modifications I have seen from GT4 owners are 19" wheel size change with 265 front tires to eliminate understeer. Personally I am perfectly happy with my car being stock since I still have to improve on my driving skills before I start modifying the car. The GT4 is a fantastic automobile. Your 718 T looks awesome too, I understand your excitement. Anyways, imagine a 981 GT4 with 265 front tires, Ohlins and a Dundon D4 engine package, wow.

    The over used constantly regurgitated lame and meaningless saying that manual gearboxes are so much more engaging is almost as gay as saying epic. PDK's are far superior for fastest lap times, flawless shifts and your hand never leaves the steering wheel. There's a reason F1 cars use paddle shifts. If you want something to grab and be engaged when you drive try becoming a better, faster driver.

    • @JankoLind
