    I've raced and set up BMW's for the past 20 years including 4 years in VLN at the Nurburgring and I just bought an M2 Comp manual. I'm not surprised your raving about the increased traction and grip as the 3200 rpm S55 wall of torque arrives. On the OEM set up (which is a fault line between BMW accountants and BMW engineers) the car's compromised set up is safe but made to feel frenetic. I call this "Stockbroker Suspension." This means you'll have a story to tell your mates down the pub and you'll survive 99% of situations provided you leave at least MDM on. The standard suspension is Sachs I believe re-badged as BMW and up to 7/10's it does an OK but compromised job against the likes of Ohlins. The BMW engineers have created a set up that I call "M2 Diff Party" and here is how it works and why traction is compromised: The rear standard springs are 500LB (Ohlins fitted in video are rear 950LB) progressive. When you accelerate hard they build up progressively (but quickly) to their 500lb max. The OEM dampers are not valved strongly enough to control the springs especially the speed of their rebound above 7/10's and the undulations of a British Road push the spring back up vertically as they reach max 500LB progression and max push back at the peak of an undulation. The speed sensors, G sensors and diff sensors monitor this happening and the first part of the car breaking traction is essentially down to vertical movement upwards and not enough power in the damping to control this (cheap dampers made to a price target). Now the BMW engineers and test drivers (most of whom are race drivers) know this and so they have programmed the diff and systems to interfere with this damper imperfection in such a way to stroke the drivers ego. So what happens is the speed sensors see the slip and momentary difference in opposing axle speed and send in the diff to sort it out like a teacher running to break up a school fight. This produces a fish tail (under acceleration) once or twice depending on the road surface and temperature of the tyres hence the name "M2 Diff Party." Add to this the system's moving the weight transfer around by cutting and opening the fuelling and you get this frenetic personality which is BMW's way of hiding the fact they put the cheapest suspension they could get away with on your M car. 97% of owners don't care and can't drive them to their real limit anyway, it's a bit like a BMW's version of the film "The Matrix" where you can have a blue pill or red pill and "Ignorance is Bliss." That is of course until you wake up! I have just ordered my Nitron R3 kit with bespoke spring rates from Matt of Suspension Secrets who fitted the kit in this video. Nothing against Ohlins as I have won races on Ohlins I just want more fine tuning of the high and low speed bump setting's and the rebound because according to my wife I am a pain in the arse, a perfectionist and a fussy git.

      @@CarMadDad You're welcome Dale. In my opinion and as you say in the video social media has a complete lack of "real" objective and data rich information on many aspects of the M2 especially the suspension. Feel free to reference it. I'm just narrating some factual sense into a part of the M2's personality that happens in a split second as any owner will know but is actually totally unnecessary and just engineered into the car. You are raving in the video because you have now engineered it out and are enjoying your new grown up and mature M2 Comp and what it can do with "real" suspension!!!!!!! LOL.

    Hi, great camera work! I might have overheard this piece of information in the vid: what settings are you running/tried from full stiff (clicks)? How does the DFV technology perform over square edged hits? + As traction is alignment dependent as well (rear camber especially), how much did you decide to change your rear alignment after the install? Thanks.

    Great Video. I have an F80 M3 Comp and had AC Schnitzer RS Coilovers (similar to KW V3) installed and set up at Suspension Secrets. Like yourself was totally and utterly blown away with the poise and composure of the car especially at speed. It did take me a while of fettering around with the settings in order to have a comfortable compromise as I found them too stiff at lower speeds.
    I am now running the recommended setting set by ACS and the compliancy at low speed is probably similar to sport mode in EDC so absolutely acceptable. I did consider the Ohlins but had read too many reports of the rear springs being far too stiff and quite frankly I was too lazy to be bothered to research into different spring rates to get a more suitable spring replacement. If I decide to change my coilovers again I think I will try the Ohlins however after watching your review!

    Same feedback as the Subaru owner. My Rx-7 is firmer but gives a better ride in bumps even in low speeds compared to stock when adjusted to softer settings so I would recommend using softer for the road and harsher for the track and you truly get the road and track part of the name when used like that.

      @CarMadDad  2 года назад

      Hi Karl
      Great to hear and thank you.
      Obviously it depends where you set the Ohlins… however for the “fast road” set up I’d say these are an 8 out of 10 - still a stiff ride but soo much more traction and feel in steering.
      On track - will “track” set up it’s a solid 10 out of 10 from me!!!

    • @karlxu782
      @karlxu782 2 года назад +1

      @@CarMadDad wow, that sounds like a huge improvement on both side. I am running 3 sets of wheels, ps4s on advan gt for daily, re71 on stock for track, and pa4 on a replica for winter. So I will have to change wheel before I go to and back from the track. So the fact that I will have to go under the car to change the setup isn’t really a downside for me. I am pretty sure any cool over will be a + for track use, so if you say it a 8/10 against 5/10 stock, I will definitely get the Ohline. Thanks so much for your info. Cheers!

    Great video but a contrast that may help some. I have a USDM 2019 Subaru STI Limitted that came stock with stiff shocks by KYB. Coilover selections is enormous....had a chance to get the Ohlins road and tracks. They are actually a lot smoother and calmer at 12 (toward soft). And all of your positives.... I did all of the needed adjustable at top tier level (LCA in the rear, links, toe arms, etc.) and had a top tier alignment. It is way better and I have no negatives.
    On top of that, the quality of the units is staggeringly high.
    Just FYI.....no downsides ....
    I think suspension is more important than power.... then brakes.
    And, weight went down too...a plus.

    Seems like in terms of daily comfort M2cs($95K)>M2C($60K)>M2C Ohlins($64K); M2CS should be a bit faster than M2C at any given track in stock form too. With the ohlins r&t setting on youre somewhere around 2.0hz of suspension natural frequence,hence you've got a harsh ride below 40mph and a more firm,confidence ride above 40mph. ohlins dampers are much strong than the driver needs,try to play around load transefer,or even optimal brake performance though the dampers.Talking about the ride quality,bigger rims provide down side since there were less tire wall to absorb the bumps.Meanwhile,smaller rims are offen lighter and could provide much more response,while its transfer more bump force to the cabin through the chassis.One more thing is that you might want slightly bigger arb to control body roll,not to only rely on dampers.Anyway, just like you've mentioned in the video,its a personal choice.Nice video!

      Wouldn’t suggest softer tyres, the m2 really needs a tyre with a strong side wall, the car becomes vague and less confidence inspiring with a softer tyre.
      Best bet is setting the coilovers up with more ride height than usual and use coilover with a good quality damper for British roads.

    How does the damping feel when riding undulations and bumps when pressing on? That’s probably where Ohlins excel.
    Litchfield have the Bilstein & Nitron setup on their website now. Possibly more compliant than the Ohlins.

    I hope I don't come across like a giant prick from the wrong side of the pond. But I watched both of these related videos.
    Honestly I can't say I know anything about your setup. Other then you installed Ohlins.
    No clue what kit you have. No clue what spring rates you have f and r. No clue what settings you have the dampers adjusted to, or even what your tire pressure is.
    The only thing I came away with is the ride is firmer and you installed Ohlins and you love your car.
    Do you omit all this information by design?

    • @CarMadDad
      @CarMadDad  3 года назад

      Michael - thank you for your views and comments. You are correct to an extent - The information is not detailed in the video - as I myself am not technically / mechanically minded to the extent that I have looked into the attributions of different spring rates AT THIS STAGE...
      However, this is to follow in the coming months as I learn more about the set up and characteristics of the Ohlins.
      However, in the meantime, I have taken all of 30 seconds out of my day to visit the extremely efficient ohlins website which provides full information on product, installation and setup like most mechanically minded people might in order to research such things.
      I hope I don't come across rude (perish the thought) and so have included a link for you to follow...
      www.ohlins.com/product/road-track/bmw-m2-2016-2017-f87/
      Im available if you would like to me look into this matter for you further at any time.

      Thanks for the video. I think the point about specs on the Ohlins RT is that for the M2 they come in two different configurations from Ohlins, one with 90/190 and one with 90/160 and also many people opt for swift springs with even more variations in spring rates. The differences could be quite striking but I don't have personal knowledge with my M2 Comp. The settings on the dampers can of course make a huge difference in ride characteristics.
      Again thanks for the video and perhaps more specs could be added to aid us in selecting the combination of attributes that suites our driving style.
