Alpine just feels like most of french cars. Lack of attention to detail! Cayman four cylinder is boxer and it is special engine. Those two jesters do not understood uniqness of that combo in Cayman!
I have chosen already and bought the A110S (same color and options like in the video) Why? I have driven both and the ALPINE is a different kind of getting engaged by the car on the road. It's so amazing and I use it as daily car. In normal mode no problem at all and the automatic gear box is perfect through the city. Why a Cayman T is in that point better? No way and I have driven both versions of the Cayman S and T. My hint for everyone who has the money for these cars ... test drive the ALPINE A110S Not only for 10 minutes. Drive it some hours also through normal traffic and of course on fancy roads ... Then decide ... I did it and selected the A110S

I love Renault for making the Alpine. In a world of quasi SUVs and uninspiring Crossovers, it’s a refreshing change, however at 60k I would take the Porka hands down. I think the Porsche is the more complete car
The predictable , sensible & logical choice would be the Cayman , the best engineered all-round daily drivers sports car , but somehow the Alpine to me is more desirable , it has more soul & character , it will be much more rare & exclusive for those drivers who want to be different & not follow the herd , the design whether you like it or not stands out compared to the Porsche which have all looked much the same for decades & obviously that 4 cylinder in the Cayman is the biggest drawback when the A110 sounds better & despite being smaller has superior performance due to it's lightweight & is cheaper to run , no doubt the Cayman would be the winner if they bring back that 6 pot engine !.
I actually love the exhaust note on the Cayman. I have a 718 with the Sports Exhaust (which the T has as standard) & it sounds amazing inside & out. I thought I might be a bit disappointed coming from a 981, but after a few months of ownership I really do like it.
The hydraulic steering on my 986 makes the car engaging at all speeds. Feeling the camber of the road, the surface and the kickback. Porsche only filter it out because of modern power steering, not because they want to. IMO.
I really wish we got the A110 in the US (with a manual); or, failing that, they replaced the base turbo 4s in the Cayman with a de-turboed version of the 911's 3.0 liter flat-6.
A used new Cayman GTS would fit my taste better than one of the cars shown in the video. This season is unhappily anyway over and already next year you will get a GTS for almost the same money like a T entry model with the smallest Turbo Engine they offer.
Cayman GTS 4.0 is a 70-75k car for decent spec, so in a slight category above these 55-60k cars. I don't think I could spend 60k on either of those cars as tested, something from the used market I think would be a lot more exciting for less money (even with some set aside for maintenance) a 987.2 3.4s or 987 R 981 S or GTS, Alternately original M2 coupe for 30k would have 1 years bmw warranty and a 3.0L 6cyl and some back seats....

This is not the day yet where turbo engines are as good as N/A, just a fact, they are getting better, but not there yet. And no they are not daily drivers, all you need is to go on the used market and have a look on the average mileage, these are week end cars mostly, hence why you will rarely see the A110 on the road. And having driven both, you can live with the A110, good for you if you prefer the Porsche, but both are able to fulfill the daily duties.
@@chumaxa Well - I owned a Boxster and it is a great daily driver. I also owned other small coupes/convertibles as well as have test driven a lot of others. I have seen this video at least 3 times and James' verdict baffles me, after his being so effusive in praise for the Cayman T. I was really expecting a split-decision. That said, the engineering recipe of the Alpine does not appear original to me. Those who have read a recent revisit of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL's report by Autocar in the 1950's will know how this machine outdid the heavier and more powerful Ferraris of the day. The Mercedes 300 SL, like the Alpine, drew upon aluminium components to achieve this engineering superiority. And, I am sure that the Alpine, like the Mercedes 300 SL, gained in sheer agility from this. So, as admirably agile as the Renault is, I think that this was a recipe borrowed from great cars of the past like the Mercedes 300 SL gull-wing. With safety being such a high priority on my list, I would prefer the safer handling Porsche over the exhilaration of sheer agility and value for money which together I think, sadly, constitute the main criterion for the verdict of this video review.
The A pillar of these cars is really thick ! The Porsche is more spacious inside, but the interior design is not as exciting as that of the Alpine, with the blue colour also being partly used in the doors. Motor of the Porsche is much easier accessible

When AUTOCAR reviews got so boring? Blá blá blá...Where are the track tests, the lap times? And why so much whining about the automatic transmission? After so many years with crappy auto transmissions, finally PDK and others DCT’s are so good and selling so much and some testers now want the manual transmission to engage?! Here is an idea: engage with a 987 Cayman. It’s a great car and you’ll be pleased!
I wish Renault would produce an A110 'Plus', with the engine and steering-mapping/geometry of the 'S', but produce a 'hybrid' suspension-tuning that was much closer to the standard car's damping (perhaps, identical to it), but with stiffer anti-roll bars. I'd keep the smaller wheels of the standard car - tires, I'm not sure about... That would be a truly perfect package.
The decision was pretty easy for me. Which one offers a manual? Right. So my lava orange T arrives in 10 weeks now. Good job, Alpine… you made a car designed specifically for that I didn’t even bother to look at.
Porsche should take the new 6 cylinder engine from the GTS, and make a 4 cylinder version and stick it into the T, and reduce the tire width. IT needs to have some models in lineup that focus on fun for the street, and not outright speed which endangers the drivers license. Currently would always take the Alpine base model
The way they tried to make the Porsche win this one when even they know the Alpine is miles better... should be considered corrupted journalism. If were not for the fact that at the very end the even Porsche guy, recognizes the truth.
Sound edition guys... please get the music lower, this happens in every video, when the music starts, the voices are much difficult to hear. I really don’t car about the music and i believe that most of us think the same. Don’t get me wrong, i like the editing but that part is quite annoying. Thank you
Confused first Guy is incredibly critical in comparison then choses the car he can’t get comfortable in..for me for what it’s worth..it’s the Alpine everyday, brilliant car
As good as the Alpine might be it doesn't have everyday usability - plus it doesn't have a manual box. The Cayman remains the benchmark, so my money would go on the Porsche. Every time.
The video started with two lovely looking sports cars, then some cool music and i got all excited thinking about my love for sports cars, racing and the evocativeness of it all...... Then those two dorks entered the picture and my dream was shattered 😡😂
@@craigyirush3492 Craig Yirush They're so dull and nerdy!! I'm sure many would agree..he can't even make up his mind! You'll get so much a better idea of how a car makes you feel than this drivel unless you sympathise with these two dorks 😂😉
Did I miss something or did you guys go through your review without mentioning the most critical difference between the two cars - the Alpine weighs 700 LBS LESS THAN THE CAYMAN - hello? Mentioning that they have similar HP without giving the HP to weight ratio is a sin when comparing sports cars!
The problem for the Alpine is the badge versus cost. £60k is a lot of money when you can own a Porsche badge... even if it's the obvious choice. I would love an Alpine A110S but at £30k. Needs to be like 370z money really to be a real viable choice. £60k gets you a lot of second hand car. eg an Aston Martin Vantage. It's gonna cost in maintenance but it's an Aston Martin, different level.
I tried the Alpine and liked the noise of the engine. Then I went to test if it was real. Lowered the windows and went full steam in the next available tunnel and.... nothing! The noise is just a loudspeaker inside! I will stick with Porsche for quite a while 😁 Cheers,
only if they shifted the indicator & headlamp stalk to right of the steering wheel & the wiper stalk to the left!!! really don't understand why cars built inherently as LHD are also built for RHD markets simple elements like the indicator stalk & gear selector display on the floor mounted 6-spd or 10-spd auto transmission remain unchanged in the RHD variant, deliberately not configured for RHD disciplines!!! they should be on the the right side, because that's how a RHD vehicle is configured!!! legendary automobile publications like Auto Car & Top Gear should protest & take up the matter with OEMs for the sake of safety at the very least if not anything else!!! I'm more than confident your subscribers & fans will support you in your protest without a shred of doubt!!! because your protest is 100% legitimate!!!
The Porsche is over-refined. Filtered steering feel, bah, that's an excuse for not being able to get as much feel as with the hydraulic rack. I have to wonder though, this doesn't seem like as good a comparison as the Alpine would have been with a 4C or an Elise SC.
alpine shouldn't be considered as everyday car i believe, because everything makes it special is about its drivetrain. the moment you consider the cabin and screens etc, alpine loses that being special feeling instantly.
@@rodneyapcar9384 you can use it as one for sure, but you cant convince me that it is a good daily, nonetheless if they improve even the screen to new cpu and android version we see in new clio 5 , facelift megane, talisman etc when they facelift it, I think it will be good enough for everyone even tho in cabin spaces are not enough and almost don't exist.
@@millipekmez577 A few points, the car is a two seater like many other "sports" cars. It's onboard functions provide connectivity via Alpine App along with radio, SD card, Nav. Do you think the folks at Alpine only designed it not to be a daily drive. If fact I know of 3 local owners that use the A110 as daily drives. The car is about minimum weight, one can add accessories for storage such as a bin on the back fire wall between the seats. Leather pouches that live each side of seats next to doors. By all means buy a Porsche for more storage but less handling, performance and enjoyment. But then I am so bias.
@@rodneyapcar9384 i know and agree where are you coming from but I'm looking at this topic from many point of views, I would prefer alpine and even tho I like my fast reaction screens and fast cpus I wouldn't care less in an alpine car. personal preferences dont change the facts tho no matter what we feel :) because it is personal and bad screen, bad phone holder, great drivetrain are facts :)
Cayman has classic styling. 110 looks like a bit plainer, like a kit car. Cayman is a Porsche, 110 basically a Renault. Cayman has built in quality, 110 I suspect far less. Cayman is manual, 110 isn't, Porsche more common, 110 more exclusive. No competition in my view, the Porsche every day, but each to his own. Wonder how many people saying the 110 would still make that choice if they were actually walking into a showroom with a pocket of cash?
Never drove one but every tester I've seen testing it said the Alpine was a banger and a real joy to drive for sportscar enthousiast. This makes me think we need to drive the Alpine to understand how enjoyable it is to drive.
I personally think the alpine is an ugly looking car and the engine sounds tinny. Too many compromises with the alpine such as poor gearbox, little practical storage space, compromised driving position. The Porsche wins by miles

The way they tried to make the Porsche win this one when even they know the Alpine is miles better... should be considered corrupted journalism. If were not for the fact that at the very end the even Porsche guy, recognizes the truth.
Skipped over the Cayman part, engine 'regrettable' in the summary is accurate
Bills have to be paid, and VAG has quite a spiteful reputation when it comes to critical reviews.
Sound edition guys... please get the music lower, this happens in every video, when the music starts, the voices are much difficult to hear. I really don’t car about the music and i believe that most of us think the same. Don’t get me wrong, i like the editing but that part is quite annoying.
Thank you
Luv the T, wudve bought it if it had the 2.5 ... & didnt have a roof 😜
Confused first Guy is incredibly critical in comparison then choses the car he can’t get comfortable in..for me for what it’s worth..it’s the Alpine everyday, brilliant car
It's weird that Alpine didnt use a 2.0 for the S.
Not at all, they're on a tight budget.
It's heavier whereas they're looking to gain weight

braking in the corner like that...
Mid corner braking has kept me alive, just have to be careful
@@GadgetMart Happens to all of us sometimes, but it's sloppy driving and I would not be happy if I got caught on video with it ;)
Probably doing a cornering shot for a stills photographer and then chucking on the anchors for a three-point turn.
I saw dedicated Alpine shop in Paris!!! That was incredible, only Alpine cars.
Porsche is charging close to one hundred thousand dollars for a loaded up four pot. It's a meme at this point.
Patrick Bateman dorks? What are you, twelve? Did they use too many big words for you?
@@craigyirush3492 Craig Yirush They're so dull and nerdy!! I'm sure many would agree..he can't even make up his mind! He says the Cayman is the best sports car with manual and driving position is spot on and says the Alpine doesn't do it for him and then goes onto say he'd take the Alpine ffs! 🙈😂😂
Watch Davide Cironi reviews in comparison. You'll get so much a better idea of how a car makes you feel than this drivel unless you sympathise with these two dorks 😂😉
Patrick Bateman they both know more about cars than you do you pillock.
@@craigyirush3492 great come back 🙈🙈👍
Patrick Bateman it’s the truth. You couldn’t get a job doing what they do.
If Renault built a MANUAL I would rob a bank to get one. Instead I just watch and contemplate.
Alpine Formula 1 brought me here.
You're just care about what others think or to flex, that's fine if you need to flaunt your money. These guys are talking about the drive
Depend if you buy a sport car for the experience and the fun or for the badge and the social status
I sticking with the Porsche
I tried the Alpine and liked the noise of the engine. Then I went to test if it was real. Lowered the windows and went full steam in the next available tunnel and.... nothing! The noise is just a loudspeaker inside! I will stick with Porsche for quite a while 😁
Cheers,
I like your lie. try sport mode or track mode, you know, the bif red spot. The sound is real.
@@bobbychouffe6988 nope! All fake!
I hate to be a pedant, but it's sub-lime, not sue-blime. It cut through me every time!
Too capable I mean...Does this guy wanna maybe say something that not everyone says about the Cayman try something new
I will go for the Cayman 981 over the Alpine, I will go for the Alpine over the Cayman 718.
So you like sound over anything else...including vehicle dynamics. Try ASMR. It is cheaper.
only if they shifted the indicator & headlamp stalk to right of the steering wheel & the wiper stalk to the left!!! really don't understand why cars built inherently as LHD are also built for RHD markets simple elements like the indicator stalk & gear selector display on the floor mounted 6-spd or 10-spd auto transmission remain unchanged in the RHD variant, deliberately not configured for RHD disciplines!!! they should be on the the right side, because that's how a RHD vehicle is configured!!! legendary automobile publications like Auto Car & Top Gear should protest & take up the matter with OEMs for the sake of safety at the very least if not anything else!!! I'm more than confident your subscribers & fans will support you in your protest without a shred of doubt!!! because your protest is 100% legitimate!!!
Porsche looks good but Alpine looks classical
really??
Color grading is important 🤔
Evora 400 for me please :)
The Porsche is over-refined. Filtered steering feel, bah, that's an excuse for not being able to get as much feel as with the hydraulic rack. I have to wonder though, this doesn't seem like as good a comparison as the Alpine would have been with a 4C or an Elise SC.
if you think the Alpine A110S isn't extreme then you don't know what your driving!!!
alpine shouldn't be considered as everyday car i believe, because everything makes it special is about its drivetrain. the moment you consider the cabin and screens etc, alpine loses that being special feeling instantly.
Mt A110 PE is a every time car, daily/track/social runs
I use my A110 as daily driver. And I assure You, I couldn' care less about that screen or about the interior !
French everytime 👍♥️
Rolf Harris because you don’t have a drivers license?
Well I did having sold two Porsches and I have not regretted it for a moment.
I personally think the alpine is an ugly looking car and the engine sounds tinny. Too many compromises with the alpine such as poor gearbox, little practical storage space, compromised driving position. The Porsche wins by miles
To me the alpine was a good idea but never quite got it right. Maybe its not available in the US. Not sure why i just don't care about it
You have 2 sports car to track day or to be enjoy...who tf can choose the one which wheight over 250kg more!!?
If we talk about cayman gts for 100k€ ok, but for the same 60k I have no doubt: A110 (with no S)
Instead of constantly showing the presenter telling us again and again and again how well the Cayman handles, how about showing the car driving around or its interior? It's not a new car, we've seen it countless times, but it beats seeing the same guy driving for 10 minutes, repeating ad nauseum how good the cayman is.
A Porsche car always looks as... a Porsche car.
No imagination in design, no risk 😴😴😴
guys, please spend a little more care setting up your sound recording. The sound is awful, we can't hear you over the road noises. This video is about my 2 favorite cars and it was sadly very unpleasant.
I'd have the Cayman, manual gearbox is essential for the experience. Otherwise why bother?
If the Alpine has no manual then there is no comparison.
Im the only person who loves automatics here I think
