  • Boston Whaler Montauk Project: Installing Lift Assist Spring on Minn Kota Riptide/Terrova Trolling Motor
In this video I will show you how I installed a lift assist on a Minn Kota Riptide/Terrova Trolling Motor. Of course, the steps can vary slightly depending on the specific model and lift assist system you have, but here are some general steps to guide you through the process.
You can find Minn Kota Lift Assist parts on Amazon at: amzn.to/43iNe56, but I also recommend shopping around for the best deal. Of course, I do love my Milwaukee tools and those can be found here: amzn.to/3PcMRTy or at your local hardware store.(As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.)
First, you want to make sure you have all the necessary tools and parts for installation. This typically includes the lift assist kit, screwdriver, wrench, drill (if needed), and any additional hardware specified in the instructions. (all I needed was some wire, vise grip pliers, safety goggles, and a Phillips screw driver).
Before installation, you want to ensure the trolling motor is securely mounted to your boat and is in a stable position. If necessary, remove any obstacles or accessories that may obstruct the installation process.
If available (I didn't have one) I would also recommend that you carefully read through the installation manual provided with your lift assist kit. The manual will provide specific instructions and diagrams tailored to your model of trolling motor and lift assist system.
Whenever possible you should always follow the step-by-step instructions provided in the manual. Typically, this involves attaching the lift assist bracket or assembly to the trolling motor housing using the supplied hardware. Make sure to tighten all screws and bolts securely.
Once the lift assist is installed, test the functionality to ensure it operates smoothly. If necessary, make any adjustments to the tension or positioning according to the instructions provided.
If your lift assist system includes cables or springs, ensure they are properly secured to prevent tangling or interference with the trolling motor's operation.
After installation, test the trolling motor to ensure it operates correctly with the lift assist installed. Verify that the motor raises and lowers smoothly and that there are no unusual noises or vibrations.
Finally, you should always double-check all connections and fastenings to ensure everything is secure. Inspect the surrounding area for any loose hardware or potential hazards.
It is important to periodically inspect the lift assist system to ensure it remains in good working condition. Lubricate moving parts as needed and address any issues promptly to prevent damage or malfunction.
And remember to always prioritize safety when installing and using your trolling motor and lift assist system. Follow all safety precautions outlined in the manual, and never attempt to modify or alter the equipment beyond its intended use.
If you encounter any difficulties during installation, consult the manufacturer's customer support or seek assistance from a professional technician.
Thanks for watching. Hope this has helped, feel free to ask any questions-wishing you the best! 1💙

Friend, I just watched your video, and you did a great job. Only thing I would suggest is never take it apart. I have had to replace my collar several times because they are brittle, and I always remove the head and then just slide the shaft out after removing the collar below that holds the spring assist to the shaft head. And yes, that spiring assist is a life saver. anyone that knows how heavy that motor is would agree.... Great job though!!!

Thank you so much for watching the video and your suggestion, friend. I truly appreciate it and will follow your advice next time. That's what youtube was about helping others and having others help you by pointing out what could have been done to make it easier or better. Yes, it definitely is a life saver. Thanks again. I truly appreciate it. Best Wishes

Thank you for the video. The information that Minnkota puts online does not show this as a lift assist. The wire you attached to the coiled spring made it simple to install. Minnkota says you need a special tool to install that. It looks like a simple wire like you used will do it. Thanks

If you would have keep the initial tension on the spring it would work even better.
