I just finished this job on my Terrova following you step by step. All is well and it's back together and working but I have a couple of comments to help others. The pivot pin is impossible to put back on unless you remove both retainer clips. Just one screw on the end where the motor mount sits moves that bracket out of the way. It was easy to put back correctly. Also, it is a two-person job to put the shaft back through the new steering housing. Holding that heavy motor and trying to stick those wires through the hole 5 feet away is not going to happen. My grown daughter came out and did the threading while I supported and pushed. Even then the brown wire kept getting caught. For some reason it was 8 inches long! BTW, here is the part number and cost info from Northland Marine. I ordered last Friday and it came on Thursday morning here in central Ohio. I could have shopped around I guess but Northland has good reviews. Minn Kota 24 Volt Terrova Steering Housing 2997020 for $121.50 each Subtotal : $121.50 USD OH State Tax : $7.62 USD Henry County Tax : $1.99 USD Shipping : $10.99 USD Total : $142.10 USD
Great video! Well done & I didn’t have to watch 4 screws being taken out for 15 minutes. Lol FYI: When you don’t raise your trolling motor before you hit the throttle to take off you’re going have to spend 3 hours replacing the $1.50 steering sleeve. (Haven’t done it yet, parts on order but will prob take 3 hours as the repair has to be done on the lift instead of on the trailer. (Also, can’t remove trolling motor mount from boat to make it easy) Drop one part or wrench in the water & it gets even more interesting. 🙁
why not skip taking the pin our and just tip up the unit and take out the allen screws and and pry the top off? I have not done it yet and just looking at the video which is great. just asking have not looke to see if all screws are accessable with a ext. thanks again for the video very informative.
Great information! How do you get that collar off of the wire of the old steering housing to put on the wires of the new housing? It has to open up somehow.
Thank you for the video! Good description of the entire disassembly process. I have a concern, in that my steering motor quit suddenly while fishing. I had no nasty noises prior to that. Neither the fob or the foot control will make it turn. Do you know how to to determine if the problem is the steering motor or the control board inside the housing?
I know you said there were other video's on the lift assist replacement, but for the life of me, I can not find any. Any chance you have that part of the video or recommend where to find a good replacement/repair video.
Great video! I have a question... I have a Riptide which is approximately 3-4 years old, the unit gets power, the prop spins as per usual however there is no steering. I can hear mechanical sounds as if the shaft is trying to spin but it seems to be severely jammed. I could previously rotate the shaft by hand, but this is no longer possible. Any ideas? Thanks in advance! Ash.
Thank you for the video brutha and yes your right there isn’t too many videos on how to do this!! I messed up mine today was running boat at about 30 mph and the trolling motor just decided to deploy on its own🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️ had to order part today. Quick question you think it’s kind of the same process for a powerdrive with Bluetooth??
Saw your comment and wanted to chime in and let you know that you're supposed to set the depth collar all the way down and tighten it before you travel over water or land on the trailer! That way it can never prematurely deploy
Sir thanks for the video. In my collar a piece of the plastic has broken off and now the spot lock is fighting to work. Apologize if the question has been asked. Where did you get the part from, if possible with part number and how much did it cost?
Very instructional! I’m having a turning issue with my powerdrive V2 . I’m using the hand remote and when I turn either way, it doesn’t turn very fast and it will stop after a second or 2 while still holding the button down. When I release the button it nudges a little bit farther. Could this be the steering housing as well? I don’t think it’s my control board because if it was it wouldn’t turn at all I would think. Idk
Noah, great video on the replacement of the steering box on your Terrova 80. I just experienced turning issues today on mine (i.e. sometimes the trolling motor would turn as desired or just turn approx. 45 degrees or so left to right). How did you determine it was the steering box and not a bad wire or board? Please advise
On my motor, I had rusty grease leaking out of the top and bottom seals where the shaft slides through, as well as some noise coming from the housing when I would turn the motor.
@@MadisonAngling I appreciate the quick response! I've not seen any rusty grease leaking from the seals, but have intermittent "full" turning capabilities... sometimes when I try to turn 180 or 360 degrees the motor will only rotate 45. Powering ON and OFF doesn't seem to clear the issue. Then a few moments later, it'll work fine. According to the trolling motor sticker, this was mfg in 2019. Spending the approx $150 or so sounds like a good bet even if it doesn't solve the problem.
Hi Noah I have a 2017 Minn Kota Riptide 24v And the steering housing box got ripped off my boat at a dock the other day the bottom piece of the housing is damaged and the two pins. Do you need to replace the complete upper & Lower housing or can I just replace the lower and 2-pins? I watched this video I notice you replaced the upper & Lower housing. Is it best to just replace the complete housing? Thank you
Hey Toni! That is a great question. Generally you won't be able to find the steering housing available in each "half", but rather the whole unit. I've ripped them apart before, however they are press fit together (and screwed together) making them hard to get apart and reassemble. You are better off just replacing the whole steering box - more time/cost effective and much easier!
Does the terrova turn 360 degrees? Or would it be possible to reverse the motor when putting the shaft back in? Looking to mount on the back of a boat.
Yes, terrovas spin as many times around as they can until the cord attaching the head of the motor to the base gets too tight. But yes, 360 degrees of motion
Thanks a lot from Germany But I have one further question: is there a trick to open the case? My Terrova is from 2012 and I think the ball bearings need to be replaced. I have loosened all the screws, but the housing cannot be opened Any Idea?
You may have to use a screwdriver or some type of "wedge" like tool to pry open the housing. I took the old housing on mine apart to inspect the damage, and it appears that the two halves are pressure fit together, along with being held by screws.
@@MadisonAngling Hi Mad, I have been able to open the housing with a lot of patience and effort. Both ball bearings are defect and now I have to have them pressed out professionally, because I unfortunately have no tools to do it by myself. But now I have only to pay for pressing them out, get new ones and pressing them in round about 50€ Without your Video it would have cost me over 300€ I thank you for the answer
what exactly does the lift assist do other than helping to raise and lowering the motor...why is it needed? I want to remove mine to give the motor greater depth thx.
Basically just helps when stowing the motor. The problem is the fitting that controls the steering between the depth colar and the steering housing. The lift assist bridges the gap between the two fittings and it won't work without it
@@MadisonAngling hi thanks we removed our depth collar and the lift assist for greater depth but now the spot lock is not engaging, the prop doesnt turn in stop lock thx
Not wise to remove those things, that's why it's not working. Also the depth collar is not only for depth adjustment, it's also a safety to keep your motor from prematurely deploying!
What symptoms did you have? Mine steers super loud and sounds laborsome. I’ve already had mine apart about a year ago to replace a steering collar. I also replaced the bearings inside which were horribly corroded.
Mine was leaking rusty grease out of both seals on the steering housing, as well as making some fun noises while turning (not all of the time, but every 5 minutes or so while in use).
It could be a steering housing issue, or it could be the foot pedal wearing out. I would try a different foot pedal first, and if it still won't turn it may need a new steering housing.
