Installing a Mercury SeaPro 115 HP Outboard on a 17' Boston Whaler Montauk ⚓
Mounting an outboard motor a Boston Whaler Montauk 15 is a fairly straightforward process, but it's essential to ensure it's done correctly for safety & performance. Here are the basics:
Be sure that the outboard motor you choose is compatible with your boat's transom. For my Boston Whaler Montauk 15 restoration I was lucky enough to get an excellent deal on a used, but practically new Mercury SeaPro 115 outboard from a local seller saving myself about $5K.

But before you begin, it's essential to ensure that it meets the required specifications & regulations for visibility & safety. Customizing the Console on My Boston Whaler Montauk 17' 🐳

A few people have asked about the work on the console since it really is different from when I first started. I did not take a lot of video, but to modify my console initially and reduce the size of some of the openings to fit my new hatches and electronics, I decided to first reinforce the openings with some treated wood, then I used filler, and repainted. The filler I used, and highly recomme...

Thank you so very very much for your video. Mine came loose and uncoiled while on the water. Took all but 30mins to reinstalled when I got home after researching. You're the best man! New subscribers
@12restoration Thank you, brother. You are welcome, and thank you for watching. I'm glad I could help, and you were able to replace yours that quickly. I really appreciate you subscribing and taking the time to leave a comment. Thanks again, Best Wishes
My spring just busted and the two pieces that hold the spring at the bottom busted off also. Now I need to find the item numbers to them so I get this fixed, Thanks for this video, Your a big help👍👍
Thank you, my pleasure, I truly appreciate it. I'm really glad you enjoyed the video, and it helped you out. I'm sure you'll get it fixed. Thanks again, Best Wishes
Thank you for the video. The information that Minnkota puts online does not show this as a lift assist. The wire you attached to the coiled spring made it simple to install. Minnkota says you need a special tool to install that. It looks like a simple wire like you used will do it. Thanks
Thanks MarkD-o1. You are welcome, and thank you for watching. I'm glad I could help. I'm sure you can do it with the wire as well. Thanks again, Best Wishes
Friend, I just watched your video, and you did a great job. Only thing I would suggest is never take it apart. I have had to replace my collar several times because they are brittle, and I always remove the head and then just slide the shaft out after removing the collar below that holds the spring assist to the shaft head. And yes, that spiring assist is a life saver. anyone that knows how heavy that motor is would agree.... Great job though!!!
Thank you so much for watching the video and your suggestion, friend. I truly appreciate it and will follow your advice next time. That's what youtube was about helping others and having others help you by pointing out what could have been done to make it easier or better. Yes, it definitely is a life saver. Thanks again. I truly appreciate it. Best Wishes

Hi. Regarding our recent chat about bail-less Centaure reels, I've seen quite a few sawed-off conversions, but this one looks like it could be the real deal, as the bail swing mechanism appears to be absent. I'm inclined to think that a sawed off might not ber that efficient as the roller end of the arm is very tight to the spool in the closed position. What do yo think? Regards. Raymondo.
Hi Raymondo, That would be awesome if it is the real deal. I personally haven't seen one but would imagine there may be some out there. I hope it is the real deal, either way you are going to have a blast fishing it. Feel free to share a picture, I truly enjoy fishing bail-less reels. Best Wishes, Ed
That looks amazing, great job on it!
Thank you so much. I appreciate your comments. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Best Wishes
Hi again. Centaures are beautiful reels, and according to some old advertising sheets I've seen on line, they were also available bail-less. I've not seen one, not a real one anyway, but what do you think a bail-less conversion would turn out like? I'm asking because I do love occasionally fishing my vintage reels, but am a bail-less convert and there's no going back now. Raymondo. Ps. I also like the Spanish 'Sagarra' reels. Do you know of them?
The Centaurs have an amazing shape. I agree, they look awesome and they remind me of the Van Staal. I had no idea they made them bail-less. I have only seen them in half-bail. I think a conversion would look and function great. The Luxor I am working on now was missing the bail, it had been cut off and sealed, so I will be making that bail-less. Most of my reels now are either half-bail or bail-less. I started fishing with yoyos when I was a kid and they remind me of that style of fishing where you have more control of the line. I missed a Sagarra in an auction once, they are really nice-- I do have a bail-less AMSA Super Casting Spanish reel I have not been able to find any information on, but it is in beautiful shape, one of my favorites, and I probably won't be refinishing that one, but I will share it when I take it out fishing. As far as converting, I always think you should do things the way you like them, if it works for you, go for it--it's all that matters. Thanks again, Best Wishes!
Hi. Great video, I just subscribed and cant wait to see all your other ones. I love vintage Ru reels, and Centaures, Luxor/Cracks etc.. you do them a great service in restoring them. I can fix them and get them going good, but the finishing job you do is something special. Regards. Raymondo.
Hi, Many thanks, I appreciate it! It's awesome to know that other people value the simplicity, beauty, and incredible durability of these vintage reels and great to hear you like fixing them as well. I will be uploading some more videos soon--just finishing a Monti Super video now that I will try to upload tonight and working on a Luxor next. Thanks again for commenting & subscribing! Best Wishes, Ed
If you would have keep the initial tension on the spring it would work even better.

thank you using a modified version of this I stripped 800 ft of # 6 with the help of my wife and my john deere tractor pulled two hundred feet at a time in about 30 minutes adain thanks for sharing
Thank you, I really appreciate it. l'm glad you enjoyed it, found it helpful, and were able to use your modified version to strip all that wire. The amount of wire you were able to strip in that time is awesome. Thanks again for sharing your experience. Best Wishes
I saw from the description that you are aware that anodizing can be stripped with sodium hydroxide, so I'm surprised you went with mechanical removal instead. Sodium hydroxide would have stripped the finish in a minute or two, even in all the little nooks and crannies, while barely affecting the underlying aluminum.
Thank you for watching. You are 100% correct. The chemical removal would have been much easier and quicker. The reason I chose this route was because the reel with its age had lots of scrapes, nicks, and scratches, as well as many imperfections from mold that I figured would show if I didn't take it to a smooth finish by buffing when I gave it the final polish. By sanding the whole reel with the buffing discs as was able to see as went along how smooth it was becoming due to color difference between the sanded parts and anodized. But again, you are right. If it were a cleaner reel, your method would have been the way to go. Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. 👍 Best Wishes
@@awhaletale Ah I see, that makes sense.

Greetings to you. I am a fan of Ru mer because I inherited it from my father and bought several copies of ru plagr, ru Recordette, and ru 602.
Greetings. They are neat reals, I love the fact that most of them are bailess. The fact that you got the reel from your dad makes it special since I'm sure there are many precious memories that came with it. There is nothing like spending time with loved ones by the water. Please feel free to share your progress with your reels. Thanks again, I appreciate your comments and sharing your story. Best Wishes

I tried this with two different cutters and new cut wheels didn’t work with either
Thank you for watching. I'm sorry it didn't work for you. I'm not sure what could have gone wrong. As you can see from the video, it worked fine in my application and has as well for others. Maybe the coating on the wires you are stripping is different. Best Wishes
I'm so glad I found this video. You idea is brilliant. I am dealing with the same problem: Delamination on my runabout floor. Water is between the layers, so I figured I'd have to cut out the bad, dry everything, then re-lay a traditional fiber and resin combo. I was JUST about to order the glass and resin when I ran across your video. If it works for me, it'll not only save me money, it'll save me a lot of time and hard work! PS Love the blue tape idea. And drilling the Glue applicator!
Thanks for watching, I'm really glad you found it helpful. The gorilla glue forms a foam when exposed to the moisture that is rock solid and waterproof. If you do a section and find the section next to it is soft, just keep applying blue tape and drilling and filling that new section. Patching those small holes is a breeze, and it becomes super strong. Just make sure you use the classic gorilla original glue. Thanks again for your comments. I really appreciate it. Best Wishes
Keep going 👍
Thank you for watching. I'm glad you enjoyed it. As soon as I have some time off, I will continue. Best Wishes
