  • PART IV Final Polish & Rebuilding: Antique 70+ Year Old French Fishing Reel Custom Restoration
This is the final video of my Ru-Mer Super restoration/customization. Now, I know that when it comes to antiques, whether or not it's a good idea to polish an antique depends on several factors. In many cases, polishing can lower the value of certain antiques, particularly if they are rare or historically significant. This really isn't really the case here, but the fact remains that some collectors prefer items in their original condition, including any patina or signs of age.
Of course, if the antique is meant for display purposes only, you might have more leeway in deciding whether or not to polish it. However, if it's still functional, consider the impact of polishing on its functionality and usability. In my case, I will actually be fishing these reels otherwise I might have just made sure they were in working order and placed them on a display case with nothing more than a simple dusting.
When it comes to antiques, and rarer fishing reels, rods, and especially lures, consulting with antique appraisers or restoration experts can provide valuable insights. They can help assess the current condition of the antique and offer advice on how to proceed with it. But, ultimately, the decision, in my opinion, comes down to personal preference. Some individuals prioritize aesthetics and prefer a polished appearance, while others appreciate the character and history conveyed by an antique's natural patina.
In the end, whether or not to polish or repaint an antique is subjective and depends on factors such as its value, intended use, expert opinion, and personal preference. You should always weigh these factors carefully before making a decision.
For me, fishing with an antique reel is a unique challenge compared to modern reels. They require more manual dexterity and skill to operate effectively, which can be rewarding if you are looking for a greater level of challenge and satisfaction in your fishing pursuits. It is also a way to connect with the history of fishing and appreciate the traditional methods and equipment used in the past and honor the heritage of fishing and feel a sense of nostalgia for simpler times.
As I always say, if you are happy with the results and it works as it should, it is all that matters. Hope this has helped, thanks for watching & feel free to ask any questions-wishing you the best! 1💙
