8 gears is great, yes Mazda has been slow to change but 6 gears is fine for everyday driving because we dont all drive like lunatics. The new cx-60 has 8 gears so we can expect 8 gears to be finally rolled out on models soon. The cx-60 has duel clutch as it's more responsive than a torque converter, so they say.

This is impressive and the cx-50 has potential. The cx-50 with an 8 speed can easily run high 5's 0-60 and have 35mpg on the hwy.

The 6 speed automatic is the sweet spot for reliability & function. Plus, the Mazda SkyActiv 6 speed automatic is actually a pretty refined & brilliantly simple design per The Care Care Nut Remix channel guy mechanical breakdown/review of the CX-5. Have fun with those imploding belt/chain CVTs that often fail around the time an extended warranty would expire, or the overly complicated, over-engineered, less-reliable 8/10 speed geared automatics and/or dual-clutch transmissions.

I know that it's not in the same size class, but I paid $44k for our new Tucson Limited PHEV. We're getting 145 MPG with it so far, as we plug it in when the battery gets depleted. We'll likely get over 1,500 miles per fill up with gas. The tech is fantastic, and the blend of electric power to the 1.6L turbo is amazingly smooth. Also, it qualifies for $6,587 in Federal tax credits, bringing the price way down below the CX-50. That vehicle has a full digital gauge cluster, an 8-speed auto trans, plug-in hybrid and inline-6 powertrains, RWD based architecture, etc. The CX-70 that is coming to NA is basically the same, but wider. So we'll see if these features will trickle down to the CX-50 when they refresh the vehicle, or will Mazda reserve them for the more premium and expensive CX-70?

It has a rattling noise coming from the back. I did not expect that from a new car. My wife old car was a Honda Accord touring and it was quieter. Great things about the CX50 are the leather quality is way better than Honda and the AC is way cooler and it looks great, but the back seat of a Honda was way bigger. I got rid of my CX-5 a couple years ago. It was only 2 years old. Everyone already had Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so the fact that Mazda didn’t offer this was ridiculous. It wasn’t something I considered much when I bought the car. The blind-spot mirrors were very buggy (would light up in the right lane on the passenger side), and a few other items were less than reliable as well. It was a nice engine and I like the look of the vehicle inside and out. I opted to dump it and pick up a Tucson. The Tucson has so many more safety features, Apple CarPlay, remote start/lock/locator, better braking, and really seems much more modern technology-wise. There’s no reason for a vehicle in the price ranges we deal with that they shouldn’t include reliable blind spot monitoring, lane assist, CarPlay or Auto, collision avoidance, or other safety features we see on many models now. Mazda is charging the same prices for cars that exclude what others give you for the same or a tiny bit more cost.

I love the more traditional interior dashboard and layout... I also love the traditional shifter... But the main problem here in America for the Mazda SUV's (and crossovers) - like the CX-5, CX-9, etc) was the lack of interior room - including lack of headroom. I was really hoping the new redesigned crossovers and SUV's would fix this major problem. So far with the redesigned CX-50 - I am disappointed. The interior still is cramped.. We would like more interior room - raising the roofline and making a taller roofline would improve so many things. It would increase all around comfort, interior room, increase headroom, increase driving enjoyment, and improve visibiility and improve safety - you see out better - means less accidents.. I know this (a higher roof) would make the vehicle slightly less fuel efficient.. But I would gladly trade bit less gas mileage for better visibility and better safety and the other benefits I mentioned earlier.. Hopefully Mazda remembers this when redesigning future SUV's/crossovers.

My current car has a very tall roof and there's tons of head room inside because of it. After stepping into a CX50 at a local dealer, I can't say I'd miss the height in my current car. I thought it was fine, and I'm 6' tall. I thought the same about interior space as well. The cargo area was much narrower than my current car though, that I could find as a small annoyance.

@@ReDiiKuLuS Thanks Andrew for your thoughts.. I not only like more headroom but I also just like to sit up higher. I like the high commanding view for good visibility. Another thing I have noticed is that they are putting like a black box at the top middle of the windshield (on the windshield side of the rear view mirror).. This further reduces visibility and with less visibility it hurts safety in my view..

So unless the Mazda has a problem getting started, those extra gears Ford has are pretty much irrelevant. Probably not needed, and probably not going to mean any better fuel mileage. But the Ford is going to do a lot more shifting to get started!
