The 2023 Mazda CX-50 Turbo Is A Ruggedly Handsome New Premium SUV

  • Mazda has been working hard to become more of a premium brand and years, the CX-5 has been that vehicle to showcase the best that Mazda has to offer for a great value. For 2023, the company is expanding their SUV family into the more rugged space with the new #MazdaCX50. The new #CX50 is more than just a wider #Mazda #CX5 with fatter tires. Built on the newer #MazdaCX30 and #Mazda3 platform, which is an updated version of the older CX-5 platform and built at their Toyota shared Alabama manufacturing facility, Mazda seemed to have perfectly paired its #KODO design language with a tougher, more butch design. Expect an even more hardcore #CX50MeridianEdition to show up later this

Happy Monday everyone and thank you for being so patient! We’ve been super excited to drive this one since Mazda first announced it last year and it’s a welcome upgrade over the CX-30 and CX-5 in space, capability, design, and comfort. We’re very excited to see the electrified option Mazda has planned in the near future. We also wanted to clarify, this vehicle technically shares the newer platform with the current Mazda3 and CX-30, not the older CX-5 platform. We imagine a lot of people may mistake it for a CX-5 platform but it’s the reason why the rear suspension is a non-independent torsion beam, instead of the multi-link setup in the CX-5.

While Mazdas usually all look alike, I didn’t know what it was until I saw the Mazda emblem on the grill. Definitely a top vehicle in this class. A very good design to a great design. I had a Mazda 626 LX (1988) that I got in August of '88. My model had a 133 cubic inch 4 in line. The horsepower was a measly 110 at 130 foot pound torque. Got that car at a top speed of 94 m.p.h. trying to catch a hot Porsche one day...that's the last of my "speed chasing" which was few in my years of driving. The one thing that Mazda promote back then for a few years was their "Twin Trapezoidal Links", which today are (?) multi-link suspension in the rear of cars.
One noticeable thing on the engine sound...it sounds great. To me, 6 speeds gets the job done fine over the 7, 8, and 9 speed models. Less gears mean less break down in the transmission (?).
I like the design of this car! Consumer Reports rate Mazda make cars literally on top of reliability. Maybe...this car will replace my nearly 18 year old Subaru Forester. At least one thing...they had a winning car at LeMans in '88.

They removed a lot of features from lower trim levels for CX-50 when these features are available on lower trim levels for CX-5. I guess that’s the cost of cx-50 being manufactured in USA?

Is there no cargo cover? If not I'd think that'd add to interior noise.

I can’t wait to try one out. The base turbo model seems well optioned for the money. For me it would see the beach and occasional snow so it should be perfect for that.

Finally a reviewer the understands the CX50 isn't replacing the CX5. Two different markets. The CX50 is going after the Subaru market. The CX5 is going for the European market. By the time Mazda releases the new CX5 with the inline 6 my CX5 Signature will be ready for trade.

I originally chose Mazda because they DON’T do touchscreens. Not all of us want fingerprints all over everything. This was on my short list coming out of a 2021 CX9, but the light headliner is a dealbreaker. It stands out so badly. Love the terra-cotta seats! Also, the lack of air vents up front might be challenging to cool the vehicle in Florida heat. The pano roof is a bummer too for Florida. It just heats up the car. My hope now is that the Euro CX60 replaces the CX5 for 2025, which would create a solid naming structure across the lineup. That’s now my prediction after the CX70 reveal. Nice review, thanks.

I was hoping the center console width issue would be addressed. I have a CX-5, and at 6'2", the needlessly wide center-console encroaches on my knee room. Sounds like it's a tight squeeze on the CX-50 as well. Too bad, as it looks amazing otherwise.
Thank you for the informative review!

    Too slow (>> 7sec 0..60mph)
    Cheap rear suspension (torsion beam)

Went in for the preferred plus package. Almost 35k. But the dealer marks ups raised it to 42k . I’ll just wait till the car markets cools down and get the cx50 with the Toyota hybrid model . 24 mpg is bad.
