Useful video, but all very minor problems over-all. Coming from a Ford where you're more worried about engine detonation or larger mechanical issues, I don't think any of these concerns would really be a turn-off for me.

My wife and I test drove the CX-50 turbo premium this last weekend, for about an hour overall. We absolutely love the appearance and the performance, among other things.
Most importantly, I wanted to list our main con with this vehicle:
    Comfort.
The seats simply are not very comfortable. I could imagine a long road trip becoming aggravating due to this. For reference, I’m 6’1” 230lbs and my wife is 5’3” 110lbs - we both noticed the lack of cushioning and she even stated that her lower back had begun hurting a bit, just after 30min worth of driving. The rear seats are even more stiff.
The stitching on the seats, while one might think is mainly an aesthetic aspect, actually further hinders the comfort level. We could both feel the stitching pattern down the centerline of the seat throughout the drive.
She disliked the steering wheel, stating that it felt like metal wrapped in leather (lack of softness). I think I actually liked the steering wheel but I see where she’s coming from. Nothing a wheel cover couldn’t fix though.
The weight of the steering itself, while ideal for spirited drives through a windy road, are not ideal for a small woman who’s just trying to drive through town. I noticed as soon as I started driving that she would take issue with how much work it is to steer at low speeds, and she did. I would be fine with it, but for a small lady, these things count.
Suspension. The main distinguishing factor that defines this vehicle as a sport utility and not a comfortable mall finder is the suspension tuning. It is on the stiff side. You will feel every bump on the road, but it doesn’t straight up rattle the interior. That’s how you know it’s not an issue of quality, but a deliberate tune for sport.
Overall this vehicle has the exact looks my wife is aiming for, but the wrong feels. Logically, the CX-5 would be the way to go for us, but she simply does not like the exterior design.

@Trevor. Same issue here with seats. taken a bath trading in cars (2014 Camry, Ford Fusion) too early that gave me instant sciatica. Good so far with a VW Passat which is great. I’m finding many newer car brands, esp Japanese cars are sacrificing seat cushioning to be lighter or “sportier.” Curious as to what car you guys ended up with as we were interested in the CX 50

I have owned my CX-50 since April 10th. I too have had some problem with the wireless charger. The main reason for this seems to be that the charger was placed in a spot where the sun can hit it. I have zero problem with it in the early mornings. It is later in the morning or afternoon when the car get hot and sun can hit that spot that the charging seems to become a problem. Your "fix" of using wired charging--which is what I also found most helpful--was spot on. If Mazda had placed the charger in front of the shifter and cup holders (kind of under the dash), I don't think this would have been a problem.

I think this is an honest review. By the way all the complaints to me are just minor problems. As long as it doesn't involve electrical, power train or even gear box problems like some of the popular SUV's, its considered good. Even an expensive Mercedes A45 does not include 'power adjustable seat'!!! As for the fuel consumption, it's very much rely on the way you're driving. Some just prefer the economy mode but some will always want a sport mode.

Great video. I've had my Cx-50 since November. I've had so many issues with it that I had to contact the AG of my state because the dealership hasn't been able to help fix the issue. The car wont lock or unlock without using the app, wont start without touching the fob to the start button and I've even been locked inside of the car, it simply would not unlock. Yes the batteries have been changed, no the remote isn't dead, yes it is both remotes, it's just misery. When it works it's great but it often doesn't. I second the auto break complaint, doesn't work well and is terrifying when you auto stop...especially on the high way

I was all set to purchase one until the 3-6 month delay on orders and the additional markup sent me looking at another vehicle previously ruled out. The previous price point made this a more attractive option. But the markup has opened the door to another vehicle in that price range.

  • @clutch7366
    @clutch7366 2 года назад +7

Commenting before I watch the video.
I got my turbo premium plus three weeks ago. Here are my minor complaints:
The rear headrests usually prevent the 60/40 split from folding down all the way, so the front seats need to scoot forward, then drop the 60/40, then scoot the front seats back as needed.
Next little complaint is that the piano black plastic around the shifter is a dust and fingerprint magnet.
Next is that although the 6spd transmission is reliable, it feels only a little clunky sometimes and another gear or two might have helped out MPG and acceleration. Next, I sometimes wish I could dial up the lane assist to put me more on-center rather than just bouncing me between the lane lines.
Next is that I think it’s weird that when using the dashboard brightness buttons, it only goes between bright or dim. Odd. Regardless of all these, I take great pleasure in daily driving mine.

Hi..... so i feel your pain on the lane assist and you are not going crazy. I believe i have figured this out as i have driven 2 suvs as wide as the cx-50 to test. So its not the width or the lane assist per se; its the car's orientation. What i mean by that is how you perceive that the car is going straight based on viewing through the windshield and over the awkward angled hood, not to mention looking in your side mirrors past the hips of the suv. Its disorienting. It could also be why you may have problems pulling in or parking.... or at least it is for me. Have never had this issue with other vehicles. Hope this may help. Would love to know if you Are experiencing something like that though. Thanks

      @clutch7366 Год назад

@@tamirdossiea3680 I gave your question some thought over the last week. The slight difficulty I have is when it comes to parking. The high belt line of the car can make it challenging to pull into a parking spot correctly the first time. Usually I have to use the camera system and retry in order to get myself centered in the spot.

  • @David-vz1yj

We bought a top trim turbo in August 2022 (sight unseen) and here are the complaints:
    1. The seats (bottoms) are too firm and become uncomfortable on longer trips.
    2. Infotainment system is not intuitive and is clunky to use. A big miss, hope a fix is in the works.
    3. Chime - Yes it is very irritating mostly bc it's such a dumb and unforced error, just like the seats (I note the OP posted a fix for ChimeZilla via disabling sensor @ seatbelt).
    4. Lane Centering is substandard. (it's not about wanting the car to drive itself per se, more the idea that this is very disappointing execution by Mazda vs peers).
But the thing looks and drives beautifully, has plenty of available power (we use 89 octane/midrange gas and find it starts more crisply and "seems" quicker than reg). We did swap out tires for 20" Contis @ dealer so that may be enhancing its really outstanding fun factor. Great value, a much more interesting aesthetic (to us) than the 5 albeit a solid notch lower on overall comfort and premium feel than its stablemate. Would say it's a legit toss up between the two depending upon your preferences.

App remote start : it is ridiculous to be able to turn your vehicle on with the app and then once you arrive to the vehicle, the ignition turns off and you get a fail message of your engine
backseat belts : If one person sits in the back, and if they put a backpack or a purse onto the next seat, it thinks that someone is sitting there and the loud chime will start going like crazy and in order to turn it off, you buckle in the seat, even though there’s no one sitting there

Love CX-50. BUT have some complaints 1) start-stop system. I have no problem using the tech but its somehow connected to the HVAC system. Mazda CX50 start/stop uses vacuum pressure to engage the cylinders but its inconsistent. Sometime it work, sometimes it doesn't. 2) strange alerts anticipating driver behavior: a) went camping this weekend. Left stuff in the car requiring lots of door opening/closing or just leaving door opening. After a short period car starting chiming about low battery and went into power saving mode (manual page 7-34) b) took long road trip, around ten hours. After the vehicle senses I've crossed lanes too many times message appears on the dash: "time to take a break" c) would like stronger tie downs in the hatch area.

I would say the CX-50 is pretty niche. So basically you will like it if you appreciate its looks, and the concept of a rugged, aggressive, but still luxury interior kind of suv. You do sacrifice a lot though compared to the CX-5 in terms of comfort with the suspension, head room, road and wind nose, interior luxuries and cabin, fuel efficiency, and japanese make. Basically I think the CX-5 is better in every way besides off-roading and looks, but the CX-50 has the panomatic moonroof and flat folding seats which I love so much! Determine what's really important to you and if you prefer value and a better car over the appearance, you will be very happy with a CX-5. I own both, but if I only owned one I would love a CX-5 with a pano moonroof

Seatbelt chime can be adjusted but it is grouped with notifications. Default is medium, but can adjusted to low.
I have my CX-50 PFP for 3 weeks now. After 1000 miles, I will add following complains or better to have:
    1. Hissing noise from vent of forward sensing camera housing during stop-go highway traffic. (happen to me twice)
    2. No light ring or silver gasket ring on start button or need ten second back light display every time you put parking brake in place.
    3. Accidental liftgate opening due to poor design of key fob. (need additional auxiliary button on the bottom edge of the fob)
    4. Cannot operate liftgate when any front doors in open position.
    5. Auto lighting do not have parking light only feature. (you are in the heavy rain but it is not dark enough to trigger high light beam, then auto turn on parking light will be ideal)
    6. Center console has waste space in front of cup holders. (the space is not reachable when you have drinks in the cup holders)
    7. Mazda app do not have feature to close liftgate.
    8. Speed needle need either different color or different shape to be better display on the dial.
    9. Weak windshield sprayer which only ooze out water on to the windshield.
    10. You cannot reach your cargo space from your backseat. This is big one due to the lower roof and higher ground clearance.
Overall, I love my CX-50 despite above complains. Hope Mazda will listen and fix those low hanging fruits.

FYI the seatbelt chime volume is tied to the other chimes so if you set the alert sound to low that will make the seatbelt chime quieter but then your other chimes like blind spot warning and what not are also quieter. On my Mazda 3 the bluetooth itself works fine for normal bluetooth audio playback but the trigger for wireless android auto only works half the time and I'm not sure what the cause is there. Also my app notifications are very timely so I wonder if it's car issue or phone issue? I am using a Pixel 6 Pro. The smart break assist has also not falsely triggered for me after a software update. I like to have it on in the off chance I actually need it and it has stopped from rear ending someone twice at very low speeds. I was creeping forward while looking to my left and didn't notice the vehicle in front of me didn't move. The other time was when I wasn't applying enough brake pressure while coming to a stop because the car in front seemed to stopping slower than it actually was. My solution for avoiding false positives is to set the warming time to early. This way it will alert early before braking and you have a chance to over ride it.

I bought my Soul Red CX 50 Premium about a month ago. Wanted to put it through it's paces. Drove from upstate NY to West Palm Beach County. Brass tax on the mileage, I go by how many miles per $10. Still have and love my 2014 Mazda 6 Grand Touring (Soul Red as well). I drove aggressive on the way down and conservative by using cruise on the way back. I don't suggest or approve on how I drove down and will not go through top comfortable speed, slalom with competitors etc. But using cruise and easy was far better on the way back. Not I 95, but I 88 to I 81 to I 77 finishing on I 95. My 6 with today's gas prices is roughly 100 miles per $14 gas. The CX 50, roughly 100 miles per $18. I wanted to try premium gas but that will be another trip, supposedly better mileage and a little more HP. Drive was great. Performance outstanding. But that f$%cking chime. And the park brake stays on if you don't have belt on. You have to put it in park again to disengage park brake. My biggest peeve is the location of cup holders in front. You are limited to size (height) of cup. My Bubba tumbler turns passenger heated seat on only because I'm tall and have to reach to passenger cup holder for comfort. At the height of low gas prices I got 100 miles per 8-9 dollars on my 6. I'm the only person besides safety inspector and two bulletins; rear brake and radar cruise control. All but 17 of 124000 miles driven by me. Oil changes, brakes and recently one of three horns.

I had been planning to buy a Mazda soon because of the incentives they offer, but if they're lying about the MPG numbers, I'm not interested in getting one anymore. I'll go back to Toyota, even if I have to pay the full sticker price for a RAV4. I've never paid full sticker price for a new car before, but these are not normal times. I'm glad I found your review today. Thank you for providing this public service!

I bought my CX-50 early July 2022. I have the turbo premium package. Zircon Sand with terracotta interior.
I have to say that I’ve not experienced anything wrong with this car; I love it.
I do agree with the ambient lighting. My last car was I 2010 Mazda3 GT hatchback. Manual transmission. Even then, Mazda had a center blue light and one at the front driver and passenger door. It does seem odd that there isn’t any.
My only other issue is the center console. Opening the storage is a bit cumbersome, and it would be nice if they softened the sides.
I’ve absolutely loved my CX-50 so far, my gas mileage seems to be better than what’s reported in this video. I’m getting very close to 22 city/ 27 highway.
The seatbelt chime is loud! 😂

My biggest concern is that it doesn’t have front acoustic ( double paned ) windows which the CX-5 has. This increases the road noise quite a bit on rougher roads.

People forget, the CX5 didn't have that at first either. I'd imagine by year 3 Mazda will add that to the car. Not good for now but they improve each model slightly every year. They'll likely end up removing the striping out of the seat base too. Why run off buyers for something so minor?

Just picked up the 2024 CX-50 Premium. Very Pleased. It is solid and prefer the lower ride feeling. It has upgraded shocks and lighter steering compared to the 23' Model. Within 2 days, I found a coding bug. You can use the favorite button to add a radio station to favorites. Discovered you can add the same station multiple times. Ideally, should be limited to once. Also, instead of a delete a favorite screen action, it would be easier to hold down the favorite button to unfavorite a station, essentially a double click.

Man right on the money! I have 5 days with my Turbo PP. The brake thing has happened to me twice already. Iv had a CRV for 3 years and that has never happened . I can say Honda sensing is much accurate , no to mention the Traffic Jam Assist sucks! My CrV Can drive the highway alone with me just tapping from time to time the steering wheel. Don’t get me wrong I Love the looks and the sportiness. I drove the QX55 and that thing costs about 15k more and has much less plus is CVT.
Anyways for me the main complain is the charger. That was one of the reasons of my selection and it seems this will eventually end in a recall. This can damage the batteries of the smartphones. It doesn’t only get hot and can’t charge , it actually drains it. ….
    ..
One thing is like to mention if it helps, there is a setting in the BT where you can change it to have the Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto to be completely touch, even when driving. Seller didn’t know this and I came to it by mistake!

Might just be subjective differences between you and I but I find mine completely sufficient even in the 100 degree temps we've been having lately. Actually feels superior to the 2021 Mazda 3 Turbo Hatch I traded in on it and makes me wonder if I should have gotten it checked instead of just suffering with a warmer car in the summer.

The mpg is relative to every driver. It depends on many factors like:
-how flat or elevation have the roads on your daily drive. Flat +mpg, uphill -mpg.
-what is the temperature in your area. Hot(AC) -mpg, Chill +mpg.
    -tire pressure
    -gas quality
    -oil quality
-driver weight(no every body is lightweight)
    -how many passengers.
-how many stuff you carry on all the time in the car.
    -driving style
-among others like wind, road conditions and tires brands.

Spot on with the chime as well as the ambient lighting. I feel these two items are big misses, especially as the brand is trying to become premium. The chime is overly aggressive and not sophisticated sounding. Also, a little ambient lighting, even as basic as a soft white glow would do a lot to add to a premium feeling cabin.

The smart brake sounds like a potential issue. Reminds me of our Honda Pilot which granted has never actually braked but gives off a lot of false BRAKE messages leading to me turn it off. I have a Subaru and I feel their eyesight system is superior - it's saved me from rear ending a car which cut me off and rarely gives false alarms. The negative to their camera system is that it can't see if you can't see, compared with sensor based systems which I'm guessing Mazda's is.

The car seems to 'float' a little in the lane. And the brakes don't seem to respond quickly. I am open to others opinions of their experience. Keep in mind it's brand new and maybe it will get better. Overall, a great car. It will take some time to get used to all the technology also.

It sure looks like a sweet ride. Most of these gripes are pretty minor as you noted. MPG not so much so that is a negative. However most SUVs that get better mileage either have CVTS and are not fun to drive, or have poor ABS systems. So I guess that is just one of the niggles I will have to live with. The other minor issue I see is no USB-C? Just about everyone else has both incorporated. Mazda get with it!

Before choosing a CX50 you should consider the following:
    1. The GT’s 20” rims and standard Goodyears (Canada) cannot be considered an off-road tire. Hopefully it works in winter but you don’t have much tread depth.
    2. This is no competitor to a Subaru product as there is no suspension travel, little ground clearance and a metric tonne-load of plastic under the Mazda (can you find the oil filter DIY’s)
    3. Fussy interior: Beautiful sure but it marks so easily and that surface around the shifter is hard to clean and scratches easily.
    4. How do you clean the heads-up display that sits in the well in the dash and do you find the display in the glass distorted or clear?
    5. Don’t count on great mileage and oil change intervals seem to be more frequent.
    6. Body: so many crevices to trap sand and salt over winter = early rust potential? Just wondering (had literally miles of weather strip components)
    7. Rear storage: Disappointing! The problem is the roof height. If you travel with small family (4) you must consider bringing empty luggage to the dealership. You may find a CX5 works better as luggage can stand vertically back to back?Try it! Or reconsider other brands. Don’t simply rely on volume data.
    8. Purchase experience: Maybe this is happening every where but freight and PDI seems greatly inflated and acting like a surcharge.
    9. Ergonomics: Not bad. Glad to see some buttons but the stitching on the steering wheel isn’t smooth, spokes are awkward and grip width at the 9 and 3 position aren’t good. You might agree after 500 miles.
    10. Chassis should be an inch or 2 taller to minimize height of tunnel. Isn’t this meant to be a better off-asphalt Mazda?
    11. Seats. Be sure you are ok with the Mazda designed butt-floss. This is weird and should be changed mid-production. Seats are hard. Bolsters are very hard.
    12. Look hard at the CX5 before you buy the 50.
    13. Outward visibility is poor due to the tall door sills and low seating position. This is greatly annoying and further, the shape of the mirror looks nice but is less functional. I recommend looking at Subaru as outward visibility is fantastic.

    7) Consumption - accept it (you have Turbo + 2,5l engine + SUV)

I struggle with connecting my phone from time to time, and have shut the car off to get it back to a state I can deal with when I turn it back on. Probably just me and my propensity to ignore user manuals... I sometimes drive on narrow, winding country roads, and the CX-50 is a great point-and-shoot partner. OTOH, I often get an annoying audible warning of an impending road departure, and a warning to steer the car to the right... right now! I'm going to have to get rid of that or stop driving otherwise pleasant country roads..

I wanted a Cx-50 but ended up with a Subaru Outback wilderness. It really was the dealers fault though, the Mazda dealer held me hostage because I was naive enough to give them my keys. And he didn't tell me the mark up until after I did the credit check and wanted to negotiate on a monthly payment rather then the out the door cost. By the way, fhats my piece of advice for anyone buying a car, ask the dealer what the out the door price is

I came from a 2021 Signature CX9. The lack of ambient lighting in the CX50 is quite a disappointment for me as well. My CX9 also had a light strip in the grill that looked great as well.
I echo the gripe with the wireless charging pad. So far it has proved completely useless. Although I do think the location of it is in precisely the optimal spot on the CX50 unlike my CX9.

Guess it's true what they say never buy the first model made. Think I'll opt for the CX5

That was a very insightful vid! The wireless charger issues was the biggest surprise.

Great video. No mainstream car review has this kind of info.
The whole smart brakes thing scares me. I had it on a Honda CR-V and it once saved me from having an accident. But I am always worried it will come on when not needed and potentially cause an accident.

Thank you, I originally wanted to do a review but there are so many I tried to think outside the box. Yea I don't think us old schoolers need smart brake at all

As a techy, I was a bit turned off with the thick bezel on each side of the infotainment screen. When it's off, it looks beautiful, that low, widescreen, but when the screen turns on, you feel like you wish you had more of bezel-less look. Similar to new TVs these days. No one want that thick cladding. So for me, that is a stylistic miss as the '22 CX-5 has a more seamless bezel.

I hear you, I had a RAV4 temporarily which had that big blocky push button screen so this was definitely better than that, but this should've had the same if not better than the CX-5

I own a cx50 turbo and they already changed transmission after 10 k miles.transmission is still doing the same problem. When in heavy traffic and slightly pressing on gas pedal and rpm reaches exactly 1000 it jerks hard. They also got to change a whole module behind the bumper cause many dashboard lights keep flashing.
    I stop, check engine …..
I had a cx 30 turbo before and it was way more fun to drive and pretty more quick as it is 500 lbs lighter . I got this one purely on aesthetics and so far I’m very disappointed. Mazda service staff are excellent so that is the only thing making my experience less painful lol

Just purchased the cx-50 and I noticed after 50mph the air from the sunroof is loud. I don’t know if anyone else is having a problem with this. It’s closed all the way too.
