Bro i created it and it was only 42k, honestly it would be everything i ever need and most other brands you have to buy the most expensive trim to get ventilated seats and the better sound system. Not with mazda,
Mazda's legroom numbers are utter nonsense, they use a completely different way to measure than most others. In reality it has significantly less legroom than Acura RDX, Hyundai Tucson, etc. you can easily see the difference if you look at Alex' videos of each model.
I agree. Their combined legroom doesn’t account for the thickness of their front seats, which are ridiculously thick, thus not accounting for actual (usable) legroom in the back. My in-laws have a CX-5 and at 5’9, I am not comfortable in the back. My knees are stuck in the seats in front (and my in-laws are both shorter than I am).
Legroom numbers are about as useless as cargo numbers. You need to go the dealership and look at this shit in-person. I don't care what manufacturer it is.
Exactly! It's a very direct competitor in size and interior quality, though it has no off-road pretensions. They may compare it to the hybrid when that shows up. I'm glad they'll be using a Toyota hybrid system, as they're the best, but I hope it's adequately powerful and refined. The RAV4 powertrain is OK, and I'd love to see it in this roomier and nicer body, as the current RAV4, with its fake truckiness, has never impressed me. It looks cheap.
Nice to see the CX-50 coming out : can't wait for the AoA full review in your home turf. I would agree, Ryan, that the chrome strip between the tail lights would look great. I love the idea of the RDX, but it is . . . unusual looking in my opinion. The CX-50 is much nicer looking.
Pandering to all the people smitten by the look of large rims. The manufacturers should not force large rims onto consumers. It should be an up-charge option regardless of trim.
I've been looking for a new car in this size range for a few weeks. I'm not a brand snob, but I test drove the Mercedes GLC300 (horrible), the Lexus NX (meh), and the BMW X3 (loved it!). I've had a Acura MDX and RL in the past, and Toyota 4Runner. They're nice cars. But, there is something about this Mazda that I love. It's so stylish, beautiful and from what I've researched extremely reliable. I'm going to go look at them this week. I'm 6'2". Would that be an issue? How would you compare this to the BMW overall? Thank you both for the great review!
Is RL Ridgeline? I have a Ridgeline and am not in love with it. What did you end up doing? I am 6'2" and also dont find the seating super comfortable in the RL so interested in your thoughts.
IM SOLD !! Panoramic roof ! I’m in love with Mazdas all over again, my friend she has a 19’ mx-5 Miata ! It’s phenomenal! I’m a Mazda fan all over again!
I have a Mazda and an Acura in the Seattle area. There are no good Mazda dealers after one of them bought the other. Acura dealers are not great, but still OK. They never damaged my car and repairs were fine. 2 Mazda dealers damaged the car twice and did a sticking brake job. We made them fix for all 3, but it was a fight. People less mechanically inclined would have been on the hook to pay for all of the issues.
This as a hybrid would be very interesting! As someone who mostly drives in heavy traffic the hybrid system would be huge fuel efficiency advantage. Hopefully we will see lots of other manufacturers bringing hybrids to market in the SUV segment. Hopefully the auto makers predicted the ramp up in fuel costs we have seen now.
1 year later and still no news about the hybrid. It was first mentioned from Mazda that they would launch a hybrid cx50 after a year or so from the original launch of the cx50 but still nothing. Not even a hint. either its not coming or its going to be delayed so much that by the time it comes out every other competitor already has their foothold in the market. These are built in the same factory as the Toyota Corolla cross I heard. Their collab with Toyota has me hoping that they would stick the Rav4 hybrid engine into it. Though I wonder if its going to use the same eCVT as well. Was looking at a Rav4 hybrid, but they're hard to find or the prices are awful. Now with the Carolla Cross Hybrid looming as well.
I would like to see the lower trim models tested with the 17” wheels and see if that softens the ride. If I was going to get one of these it wouldn’t be with 20” wheels.
It does soften the ride. I have the Select model with the 17 inch wheels. The ride is still firm, but planted. You always feel safe and in full control of the vehicle. The 17 inch wheels are the way to go.
@@CRVgarage No, it's a non-power (fully manual) seat and very comfortable. The materials are very durable. I originally wanted the BASE model of the CX-50 but there were none being manufactured so I had to settle for the next line up, Select. I personally prefer base models of cars since there's basically less sh*t to break on a base model and I tend to keep my cars for MANY years. Less is best.
@@CRVgarage You can go up to Preferred, Preferred Plus, and Premium before they add 20" wheels on the Premium Plus and all Turbo models. Premium has stuff like power driver and passenger seats, panoramic moonroof, leather seats, heated front seats, and Bose sound system.
@Richard Ren I’m not disagreeing with you. I just pointed out that to say this is as “luxurious” as a CX5 is false. Even the front is a couple steps down in several key areas.
well they have the 60,70 and 90 coming and measurements are all over the place and dont really make sense. a true cx7 replacement should be a sporty sleeker faster model i dont think they are going to do that. rear wheel drive and V6 option would be awesome.
CX-50 is such an amazing looking vehicle on the exterior. Almost $42k msrp at top trim though, not 100% sold on that price tag but it’s super beautiful regardless
It's high, but there is a lot of content. A luxury brand with similar features would be higher, but it remains to be seen if those buyers will find Mazda an acceptable alternative. I do wish they had a more modern transmission and that they had a better infotainment screen that was easier to reach. It's nicely high and easy to see, but quite a reach.
@@markmiller3279 has a lot of content, but that does not equal premium. Kia's offer content too, they aren't premium. I like my Mazda for what it is, but it's not a premium brand...yet.
currently drive a mazda cx30 with the 6 speed auto and have driven the cx 5 and 9 and find the tranny performs very well with zero probles...rock solid..i will admit a seventh gear for hwy crusing would be nice and will also improve mpgs.
It probably depends on what your looking for. The Outback is significantly faster while not requiring premium fuel, has more room while still having a nice interior and comfort oriented suspension. The CX-50 has a nice interior, handles better, but has a firmer ride and less space. The real let down is the powertrain.
Alex, you forgot that The latest generation Miata would never have been possible unless Mazda partnered with Fiat Chrysler. I'm sure there must have been other partnerships in the past, but I think the Toyota partnership is right in line with what Mazda has to do to scale
Great, thorough initial review, Alex! And, it certainly help to get another perspective from your co-host Brian. As a former Mazda 6 ('14 & '16 GT) and Miata MX-5 ('96 M-Edition), I love how all their cars drive & handle. Though the 6-spd is short on gear count compared to their competitors, it's the drivability that mattered the most that other vehicles that had more gears lack. The handling is better than the competition. And, the interior is simply the best compared to other at the given price point (even better than several that cost more). If I don't have a need for a full-size truck, I would still be a Mazda owner. This would certainly be a good option to replace my wife's '15 Honda Pilot. As for the off-looking center vent, I would wrap the chrome strip in black to make it more integrated with the interior.
Mazda has been creating great exterior designs. Very sexy. Their handling has always been a selling point. Their features and trim strategy continues to be off from what the mainstream buyers want. Mazda don't listen to Ryan. Don't add more chrome. Chrome drool on cars is ugly. Less is more when it comes to chrome.
Previous CX-5 owner, looking at the grille, it reminds me how difficult it was to clean properly after a long drive in bug season. For the base engine, now a behind the competition on fuel economy and gear count.
The last SUV that caught my eye was the Kia Telluride, this CX50 is a nice looking vehicle. IMO, I would prefer 18” wheels, knobby tires, a more substantial roof rack, and a cross bar. No one is going to take these vehicles overlanding but some folks want the look.
I was so excited for this model to come out. I like the CX five but it kind of missed the mark. This tries to improve on that but it’s not luxury and it’s not off-road. And the dealership experience certainly is not premium. The top trim price is way too high, and real world mpg feedback from owners puts it in the low 20’s. Sorry I don’t care how fun it would be to drive the turbo model I just can’t accept those MPG‘s.
Lift it, get rid of the torsion beam rear end and put some real wheels and tires on it Mazda. You'd compete with Subaru's Wilderness! Hopefully the Meridian edition is better, sounds expensive though.
Compared to other vehicles in this segment how big is this vehicle? I was hoping to see the size comparison chart usually displayed. The inside seems a bit small compared to others in the segment. Tanks anyway
Looking forward to the full review with the detailed comparisons. I am not sure why Mazda chose to create so many trims of the CX-50. It seems they are taking on a lot for a brand new model (even though the parts are coming from models already in the market), and expecting customers to navigate through the tiers. Keep in mind that Mazda has not always been on their own. They had a longtime collaboration with Ford (primarily for the transmission, maybe?) that did not go well for Mazda. That probably explains their resistance to collaborate until now with Toyota.
I had also wondered if the ugly breakup with Ford has made them reluctant to partner with anyone. Ford owned a significant percentage of Mazda and the partnership was a deep one, with the smaller Fords closely related to Mazdas. The Mazda 323 was the basis for the Escort, and later the Mazda3 and Focus were related. The older Fusion was closely based on the Mazda6, which used a Ford V-6 as an option. Mazda and Ford developed the Escape and sister the Tribute, based on a Mazda platform. Ford got quite a lot from their ownership share of Mazda.
Wouldn’t buy. I like the idea of a more powerful cx5 but this looks like it’s trying to be halfway rugged and luxurious at the same time which is just meh. Lose the plastic cladding imo. But overall I’m liking the direction mazda is going overall.
Seen a few reviews and everyone is very confused about the chrome accent on the D pillar. I agree it looks a bit funny if you are walking around the vehicle examining it, but I think it's a really nice subtle accent in all of the press photos I have seen of the vehicle. It's not really meant to be noticeable, but it provides a little pop and I LIKE IT. Good restraint with the chrome. Don't add any more!
As a 2020 CX5 owner wanting to get rid of it, there's a theme I keep hearing in videos comparing the 50 to the 5. More Road noise, seat comfort still not fixed, slower, less headroom, rougher ride. And a pet peeve of mine, STILL has piano black inside. It looks great no doubt. Although I think the word off-road is being used far too often. If plastic cladding = off-road then Mazda has you covered. but 45 series 20" tires? Nah, this isn't any more off-road than other CUV's really. It has a bit more clearance, AWD is electronically programmed a little different than other Mazda's, that's about it. The Meridian edition is where it might get interesting. Plus they really need a Hybrid. But the price is really already up there. It looks GREAT though, and I hate plastic cladding, but at least on the top trim it looks really good. But I don't think there's enough here for me to move from CX5 to CX-50. If you are looking for just another CUV for around town and highway as a daily, I'd wait and see what the new CRV is going to be. That should be a hybrid out of the gate....but it will have a CVT which is sad.
DAMN. I've had my head around going hybrid (Rav4, Venza, Tucson - none of which are as good looking as this) - as my wife's next car. I hope the CX-50 hybrid hits sometime this year. And tbh, those 250/300 power numbers at 25mph combined are veeeery tempting...
I hope the hybrid isn't hugely more expensive but I know it will be. So many hybrid versions of cars don't offset the hybrid upgrade in fuel savings until 150k+ miles which makes it hard to justify.
@@lilyusi most Ford and Toyota hybrids have a small enough price difference that the payback time is reasonable. IMO Honda hybrids seem to be the worst value proposition, when I shopped around they were significantly more expensive than the conventional models while the Toyota hybrids seem to be $1k-$2k higher. With my driving the payback time for a Toyota hybrid is around a year, although it’s not that relevant since the resale value is also higher for hybrids.
New Rav4 hybrid model that came out in 2019 only $800 USD more then gas model. Alex mentioned this in one of his reviews and that gas savings would pay for it in 2-3 years.
We actually have a cx5 and a cx50. The 50 is very quiet inside. And not everyone wants a 3 foot wide screen. I like the gauges. People ask about the 50 every where we go. The cx5 is great but feels a little cramped.
They removed a lot of features (heated rear seat, heated steering wheel, paddle shifters, LED combo taillight, adaptive front light) from lower trim levels for CX-50 when these features are available on lower trim levels for CX-5. I guess that’s the cost of cx-50 being manufactured in USA? still 6 gears for trans? (I heard CX-70 has 8 gears trans) where's the lane centering function? a full digital instru cluster would be nice. piano black plastic 🙄 hope the brake isn't as mushy as the CX-5... even Toyota Camry has more aggressive braking than CX-5
I've driven previous year CX-5's and they are a joy to drive. However Mazda had a long way if they want to be taken seriously as a premium/luxury brand. The kodo design is getting a bit stale, and they need to class up their interiors as well.
I bought a new 2021 Mazda CX-5. I believe the CX-50 has the same engine. It burns engine oil from day one. I looked up and found a bulletin for my car to be repaired. I took it in and they agreed that my car fell under that bulletin according to the VIN but, that I had to wait for the engine light to come on. By my calculation that won't happen until one oil change after my warranty is up. Don't take a chance and buy Mazdas. They don't stand by their product unlike Honda for instance. At the time I was shopping for my car, they had fuel dilution problems with some of their engines. Similar to my problem but worse. They put out a bulletin and fixed it. Mazda will do whatever it takes to avoid paying to fix the problem, even when they themselves admit that there's a problem.
Don't add oil and let the CEL or oil pressure light come on. Demand they fix it or tell them you will be in everyday for a free top off of oil. What a bunch of idiots
Why does @Mazda insist on sticking with the 6-spd transmission when 8+ is the norm for automatic transmissions at this time? They could use the Aisin 8-spd and tune the lockup to be as aggressive as they have it in their 6-spd and get better ratio spread and spacing. Truly an “almost” vehicle.
Because they make their own transmissions. This will be a volume seller and they need to keep that transmission plant busy to justify having it. Paying someone else would cost more.
I would like to see an 8 speed, but the reliability of the 6 speed in undeniable. I also like it still has a shifter unlike an Acura with push buttons or others with dials. My only real need for an 8 speed isn't driving dynamics, I don't expect this to be an AMG Mercedes, but I do want lower MPG which the 8 speed should improve.
Great initial impressions video. Really liked the questioning comparo dialogue at the end - much more fun to listen to. Would you buy this over the XC-40 or Ioniq 5?
I am from Europe and I have no clue how much is 23MPG in the city and all the time I need to use a converter to be able to understand something. I would apreciate if you can add into the next videos also the Metric measurements beside the Imperial ones. Thank you.
Please get Dave Coleman from Mazda on to explain some of the CX-50 minutia, ie., why is the Radar Sensor mounted down low and more subject to potential damage? As always, thanks for your great review.
Thank you, I was wondering why is the Radar System so low? Especially in an area where you have to parallel park, I think it would be risky… IMO. Anyway, I still love the CX 5 ❤️
I was hoping that Mazda was gonna offer this with the new PHEV system coming in 2024. Apparently, it will not (big mistake) and the coming CX-70 PHEV will be too expensive. I will be shopping for the new Sportage/Tucson PHEV in 2024.
@@mathewperryfan That's not what I've read. But really hope you're right. Kinda considering waiting for 2024-25 Mazda60 sedan PHEV. Also haven't announced if it will offered PHEV. Must be patient and stash money away in the meantime. Time will tell.
@@lornestein7248 Where did you hear about Mazda 60 sedan?? Never heard that rumor before. It was confirmed they disconnected the development of a new Mazda 6 based on the new RWD/inline-6 platform because sedans just don't sell in the US.
That's nice until a minor fender bender means you need to pay for an expensive hood. That bumper area would need replacing anyhow, and it's designed to crush and absorb energy. Nobody wants a hood coming through the windshield.
@@markmiller3279 🤣😂 wow! A hood coming thru the windshield? Under what circumstances? A minor fender bender? Wow dude!😂🤣 many cars have a hood that goes to the grille but I have never seen a hood go thru a windshield in any situation. Never.
Man i really wish they made it a wagon to destroy the subaru outback. I own a '17 outback and my gripe with it is the mpg, NVH and the infotainment. That being said its stupid comfy, great cargo space, cheap to run(bought for 20k 2 years ago and now could sell for 22k if i wanted). I really wish mazda would ramp up their cargo space somehow. At least make it competative to the rav4 or crv. Shoot even the tucson is dramatically bigger than those two. A mazda wagon would be sick, make it a budget audi/mercedes wagon. Some of us do not need 3 rows but want the same cargo space.
Hi, Never a Subaru fan, I wanted a new CR-V to replace my old CR-V after having tree Hondas. Nope... Disappointment with the new CR-V (small engine + turbo + CVT). After a THOROUGH research, test drives, nose-to-nose comparisons I decided to make an "exception" for Subaru's CVT. So I bought a new Outback. After one year with the Outback and Forester (as his running mate - my close friends car), and rethinking the whole story, I realize that I bought the best affordable compact crossover in the market. Yes, it's a crossover. However, 95% of all crossovers are wagons by definition. The new CX-50 is not and exception - it's a wagon. And it's a crossover of course. I test drove two CX-50 (turbo and non-turbo) and compared them cheek to cheek with my nicely tuned Outback Premium. While a nice car, the CX-50 won't hold a candle to the Outback in any aspect (except for dynamics - in case of turbo). The cargo space is petty impressive. The driver's position is still not perfect but noticeably better than the awkwardness of CX-5 (it was one of the candidates! ) ruclips.net/video/LpOi-Jj5V8U/видео.html&t=s
Same stiff suspension and seats. Hopefully 18" wheels and AT tires soften up the ride a bit. Falken Wildpeak AT Trail tires on my Rav4 have far exceeded highway and softroading!
Love this CX50. No way I’d get rid of my 4runner for it, but maybe as a nice second car for when I’m not off-roading. Also, Right said Fred! 🤣🤣🤣 I’m now singing “I’m a model, ya know what I mean”.
I really wish Mazda build the really thing, the real offroad based crossover like Subaru Wilderness. I also say they should do it right. I see Toyota has Rav4 Adventure and TRD with torque vectoring AWD but I saw that AWD system nowhere near as Subaru Symmetrical AWD or Honda's torque vectoring awd system iVTM4. I guess Mazda would also come with a torque-vectoring all-wheel drive but please make it right vs just a marketing thing.
@@naveenthemachine I was watching 2022 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road review on Driving SportsTV. That was very disappointing to watch for a $40460 "offroad focus" Rav4.
@@naveenthemachine It sounds superior on paper, but in practice the performance falls short. You can watch the recent Driving SportsTV video with the RAV4 with their torque vectoring AWD. Yes, he also took a Subaru up the same trail and there is a video on that too.
@@niuhuskieguy What does a RAV4 have to do with this Mazda? The hybrid version will be more like one, but there's no resemblance between this and a RAV4.
Good point, though I think the GV70 is really in a class above this. The Mazda competes well with the semi-luxury Acura and Buick brands, and the lower-end Lexuses, but not well against the truly luxurious brands. I'd have to put Genesis in that category now. The GV70 is really nice.
I been wondering what the Mazda brand has been doing… they look great but they still need to keep pace with the competition. Where are the new models? Are they just going to keep refreshing??
Mazda is actually the one designing and building all the new powertrains in the partnership with Toyota. Not the other way around. So yes, Mazda did finally partner up with another manufacturer. But they’re still doing all the design work and building. So some future Toyota models will use Mazda designed and built engines, not the opposite. A quick Google search will show that Mazda has been designing new inline-4 and inline-6 engines for the passed 3-4 years. Including one with a 48-volt mild hybrid system. These engines will find their way into Mazda’s new “large architecture” RWD drive based upcoming products, but also into vehicles like this CX-50.
Can't believe they use Kenda tires. Thought they make bicycle tires LOL. No wow for this styling and functionality. Quite dated by now I'd say. Japanese designs don't last on the look department for very long. But very good review again.
Don't care about the lack of a chrome strip across the rear. Do care that the exhaust is surrounded by plastic. The wheels on what I'm seeing are part of the problem with today's vehicles. The profile is absurdly low. That might be why what your driving "feels firm". Also shows that nobody considers this an off road crossover. In this segment, look to the Bronco Sport if you want to go off road. Good engine choices. Acceleration is 'meh', but very usable. MPG is questionable. They don't seem to overdo the bells and whistles on this high end model. Hopefully, fewer in the lower end trim. I've driven the high end version of my car and feel no need to upgrade. Don't like the loud cabin. Good looking. Price is high, especially considering the size, but that seems to be the theme now. Put enough cash on the hood (once things stabilize) and I'd very much consider this.
This is a premium trim with the 20" wheels and low profile tires. Lower trims have smaller wheels. The more off-road focused Meridian trim will have 18" wheels. This is quite normal.
This is going to be a huge success for Mazda, calling it now. They've understood what the market wants in this segment and delivered exactly that, hybrid is coming too to cover that side as well.
Is that why RAV4 Prime snap oversteers (Savage Geese) and has failed moose tests by both Teknikens Värld and Km77 (the latter after Toyota claimed to have fixed the snap oversteer)? It's enough to drive through snow, like Haldex, but it makes for bad and unpredictable limit handling. No one is going to race their Toyota or Mazda but limit handling matters in emergency maneuvers.
@@Ficon Moose test fail was on gas model only which was fixed with VSC update in 2021+ models. Hybrid and Prime Rav4s have lower center of gravity with battery packs. EAWD not as good as traditional AWD for performance but in snow, softroading and low speeds does surprisingly well.
I'm interested in the non turbo version, or the hybrid version. Since the Rav 4 hybrid is tough to get, its the powertrain I'm interested in. The Rav4 currently is in about its 4th year in its current gen and its interior is, okay I guess. Given how much the scalperships are asking for it it doesn't seem great. If anything the CRV interior looks much better subjectively. But if I can get the Rav4's powertrain inside a CX50 and I'm not price gouged, I'm interested. Interesting to know if it would be an ecvt from the toyota as well, but its all proven to be pretty reliable. The worst part of Toyota are its dealers. Honda isn't much better.
Agree! Touch screens within reasonable reach of driver with AA/Carplay (wireless preferably) what most buyers want. Control pads/wheels are cumbersome.
Sorry, guys, some folks like the knob that falls nicely underhand, and the less cluttered screen. Go for the big new, beautiful, touchscreen-only in the Subaru Outback if that’s your preference.
Alex on Autos, imagine you’re a weekend warrior who often takes hour+ trips on forest roads up into the mountains: would you rather have the CX50 Meridian or Subaru Wilderness?
He said he'd rather have even this trim over the Subie - and that was largely because its off-road (really soft-road) abilities were as good or better. The Meridian should be even more capable.
I guess Mazda is avoiding the name, "CX-7", even though the dimensions are very similar and both are turbo 4 cylinders, 2.3L vs 2.5L. Speaking as someone who has owned 3 Mazdas, including the CX-7. Back then, I had cross-shopped the CX-7 with the 1st gen Acura RDX, which had a 2.3L turbo as well.
i dont think they are gonna do a true cx7 replacement as that vehicle (had the soul of a sports car lol.) a true cx7 replacement should be more sporty oriented. i currently own cx7
Alex do you think the gearing in this Mazda 6 speed is very similar to the Toyota 8 speed in the Rav4 or nx? You mentioned the 1-2 gear shift feels wide. I’ve heard very similar aspects for the Toyota 8 speed
In response to the brief comparison to the RAV4, do modern Mazda's employ an oil catch can or other techniques to combat carbon buildup associated with direct injection engines? Toyota employs both port and direct injection to tackle it. I want to avoid having to undergo the recurring expense of having the the intake manifold and intake valves blasted with crushed walnut shells to remove the carbon every x-thousand miles. Thanks.
It's a huge market category (the best selling of all). Toyota already has two, and I fully expect other brands to do the same. Dealers will promote this as the more rugged and the CX-5 as the sportier.
Premium only in Mazda's mind! Torsion beam rear suspension isn't premium. 6-speed traditional automotive is at least two gears too little to be considered premium. Inferior electronics isn't premium. Toyota collaboration? Does this mean a new driving philosophy that is bland and boring. Inferior quality materials noted - hard plastics in the back seating are compared to the CX-5. No 40-20-40 back seating folding option available in comparison to the CX-5. Built in the USA vs Japan for what that's worth.
Mazda has always made their own transmissions, this the rather dated six-speed. While this is made in a jointly-owned factory, this is all Mazda. The hybrid version will use the Toyota "Hybrid Synergy Drive", but there's nothing much Toyota in this.
@@markmiller3279 Time will tell. Best automakers are open to sourcing transmissions made by others. Regardless, this Mazda is a nice mainstay product. It just has to realize this. But premium it is not.

Mazda's claimed legrooms are just absurd. Both CX-5 and CX-50 have way less room than RDX or even RAV4.
Needs more upvotes, I just commented the same thing.
Legroom numbers are about as useless as cargo numbers. You need to go the dealership and look at this shit in-person. I don't care what manufacturer it is.

I'm guessing the 20 inch wheels aren't helping with firmness and road noise. Odd choice for something that is designed for light trails.
Pandering to all the people smitten by the look of large rims. The manufacturers should not force large rims onto consumers. It should be an up-charge option regardless of trim.
I agree. Anything more than an 18 inch wheel is not going to work for offroading.
I like the way my daughters CX-5 drives. Very firm, and command of the road. Much different than my wife's Nissan Rogue. Nice work on the CX 50.
The nonturbo premium plus comes with the heads up display along with the turbo premium
IM SOLD !! Panoramic roof ! I’m in love with Mazdas all over again, my friend she has a 19’ mx-5 Miata ! It’s phenomenal! I’m a Mazda fan all over again!
ride Quality is very smooth and quiet on the 17 inch wheels... I love it
I have a Mazda and an Acura in the Seattle area.
Yea but if something goes wrong with a hybrid, isnt it expensive to fix as opposed to a gasoline only engine?

I agree. Anything over 18 inch for wheels is a big NO. Especially when its an off-road oriented vehicle.
@@girlperson1 Does SELECT come with power driver seat??
This is certainly more rugged than a CX-5 but not really more premium. There are quite a few more hard plastic bits inside than the CX-5.
@Richard Ren I’m not disagreeing with you. I just pointed out that to say this is as “luxurious” as a CX5 is false. Even the front is a couple steps down in several key areas.
I just read that the CX-50 was a possible long due replacement for the CX-7 which was discontinued in 2012.
well they have the 60,70 and 90 coming and measurements are all over the place and dont really make sense. a true cx7 replacement should be a sporty sleeker faster model i dont think they are going to do that. rear wheel drive and V6 option would be awesome.

The rumor for the longest time is they're working on an eight-speed.
Seems like a direct competitor to the Outback XT. Which do you prefer?
It probably depends on what your looking for. The Outback is significantly faster while not requiring premium fuel, has more room while still having a nice interior and comfort oriented suspension. The CX-50 has a nice interior, handles better, but has a firmer ride and less space. The real let down is the powertrain.
Alex, you forgot that The latest generation Miata would never have been possible unless Mazda partnered with Fiat Chrysler. I'm sure there must have been other partnerships in the past, but I think the Toyota partnership is right in line with what Mazda has to do to scale
How did you guys manage to not compare this to the outback?
Thanks for the review. Does it come with pre-installed trailer hitch for all the trims?
Previous CX-5 owner, looking at the grille, it reminds me how difficult it was to clean properly after a long drive in bug season. For the base engine, now a behind the competition on fuel economy and gear count.
The last SUV that caught my eye was the Kia Telluride, this CX50 is a nice looking vehicle. IMO, I would prefer 18” wheels, knobby tires, a more substantial roof rack, and a cross bar. No one is going to take these vehicles overlanding but some folks want the look.
That sounds like the upcoming Meridian trim level, more or less.
I wish it had more headroom and a higher seating position (not necessarily ride height).
Test drove non turbo cx 50. It was nice. Passed on it for now. I'm going to wait for the hybrid version. I'd get the cx 50 hybrid over rav4 or crv.
It’s really great! I love and dislike the color all at the same time ! It’s got great stance! I would purchase one ! In blue for sure !
@8:38 Fun choice in music!
Your "dynamic duo" presentation is top notch and extremely informative! Keep up the great work -- but NO spandex, PLEASE! :-)
I hope the hybrid isn't hugely more expensive but I know it will be. So many hybrid versions of cars don't offset the hybrid upgrade in fuel savings until 150k+ miles which makes it hard to justify.
so far the maverick if gotten at MSRP is the only hybrid that doesnt
The rav4 hybrid is 800 more than a gasoline AWD rav4
@@naveenthemachine yeah but I’m referring to relative to the base model
(I heard CX-70 has 8 gears trans)
where's the lane centering function?
a full digital instru cluster would be nice.
piano black plastic 🙄
hope the brake isn't as mushy as the CX-5... even Toyota Camry has more aggressive braking than CX-5
I suspect the chip shortage also caused that. Every electric/electronic feature needs chips. Other makers have also omitted features right now.
Did the engineers explain why the LED turn signals fade?
The hybrid system must be the one being used in the Venza/Rav4
Probably, though there's a chance it may use a Mazda ICE. It's easy enough to do that, and I'd prefer that over the rather coarse Toyota engine.
Why is this not compared with a Ford Bronco Sport? Are they not similarly sized, Horsepower, Price, packaging?
Bronco is a bit smaller length wise. That would be the only reason I can think of.
god that front end looks so good. love the wide, aggressive stance of this thing.
I've driven previous year CX-5's and they are a joy to drive. However Mazda had a long way if they want to be taken seriously as a premium/luxury brand. The kodo design is getting a bit stale, and they need to class up their interiors as well.
Check out the Mazda CX-60 that other markets are getting and see what you think. Personally, I love it but not so much with the white paint.
One word: cost. Also, cost.
Cost and reliability I imagine. I don’t mind their 6-speed transmission at all, never feels like it gear searching. I’m just glad it’s not a CVT!!!
Would be nice to know the range of information reported on the HUD, e.g., whether it includes blind spot notifications.
The hud on cx9 does, dont know why they would remove it for this.
Great initial impressions video. Really liked the questioning comparo dialogue at the end - much more fun to listen to. Would you buy this over the XC-40 or Ioniq 5?

Through your cameras I really hear the road noise. That's definitely not a luxury feature but overall, packaging looks good.
Great first drive review! I think it looks wonderful and I'm hopeful that the meridian (sp) looks package will help to soften the ride a bit.
The soften rife would be more for better comfort on the trail. Otherwise, great package!
This can kick 4runners butt. It can surely do 90% of the offroading.

Nice video. Sort of wish they'd answer whether they'd buy this or CX5.
Alex said the Toyota torque vectoring is superior to the Subaru AWD and ties with the iVTM4 system

I think hearing comparisons with the genesis GV70 would have been helpful. All in all a good video.
Good point, though I think the GV70 is really in a class above this. The Mazda competes well with the semi-luxury Acura and Buick brands, and the lower-end Lexuses, but not well against the truly luxurious brands. I'd have to put Genesis in that category now. The GV70 is really nice.
Why don’t you compare it to a Outback, since this model is trying to go against Subaru?
Brian is a nice addition
Yes, it was especially nice to.have the two of you in conversation. You handled that very well.
Blustery day , totally a word I’d use 🤣
All is good. Would have been awesome if it had 40/20/40 rear seating arrangement.
PLEASE MAZDA give 2023 Mazda 3 wireless phone integration & ventilated front seats 🥺

Lol I don’t think a lack of chrome is a legit knock against this vehicle. What an odd thing to say.
Can't believe they use Kenda tires. Thought they make bicycle tires LOL. No wow for this styling and functionality. Quite dated by now I'd say. Japanese designs don't last on the look department for very long. But very good review again.
Would you say the 50 has a firmer ride than the 5?
Absolutely. It rides stiff & doesn't help with offroading.
Throwing cheap plastic over a car does not make it more rugged. Just makes it look cheap
What no one mentions is how Mazda only offers one wheel style for All levels of this suv. Interestingly enough
Liking the CX-50 but I prefer the more luxurious looking CX-5. Both those FWD crossover look far better than the RWD CX-60 imo
This is going to be a huge success for Mazda, calling it now. They've understood what the market wants in this segment and delivered exactly that, hybrid is coming too to cover that side as well.
What hybrid system is Mazda using? I haven’t heard anything about Mazda hybrids.

What is with the “off road” fixation. It is not a premium car. Not a rav4 or cry beater
Thanks.
No are you kidding
The market will be confused by having two vehicles with overlapping prices and sizes.
Why premium? The CX-50 is a mass market compact SUV. Nicely looking, with its pros and cons.
