Thanks for the comparison. Great job as always. I already own a CX-5 100th anniversary model and I am looking forward to test driving the CX-50. I am a big guy and I hope the added width will help. Finally a pano roof and wireless Android auto. Good to hear that the this new model has kept the driving fun. The terra cotta trim looks great. Thanks for the review.
I had a good look at the CX-50 few weeks back at a dealership here in Dallas. And then decided to go with the CX-5 Turbo. I don't regret it. For me, handling, steering feedback is more important than anything else. I really love the heavy steering feedback on the CX-5. Also, I don't know why everyone keep telling CX-50 is 3 inches wider. As per the Technical spec, with the mirrors folded, the width of CX-5 is 72.6 inches and CX-50 is 72.9 inches. It is actually 0.3 inches wider than CX-5 not 3.
There seems to be confusion about the width of the CX-50. Mazda’s website says it’s 72.9, exactly as you wrote. Every single other source I’ve seen says it’s 75.6, which is what this video is using. I can’t explain this discrepancy. It does look wide.
Wrong. Body is definitely 3 inches wider. Why the hell would you include the mirrors? Folded or not they are different sizes so of course its going to greatly skew the accuracy of the actual body width of the vehicle.
‘Jinba ittai’ is the design philosophy at Mazda. It is about the balance, the ‘symmetry’, between horse and rider. I believe with the lowered roof and length, the CX-50 exemplifies those attributes… for a CUV, at least. Well done Mazda! Easy choice. Thanks for the video.

My pick is definitely CX-5 thanks to its sportier handling and better driving feel. Proven Made-in-Japan quality and reliability > a new factory even if it shares with world quality benchmark Toyota.

Thanks for the comparo review! I would take the CX-50 for these reasons. I love that terra cotta interior, it has the better Bose sound system (12 speakers vs the CX-5's 10 speakers, plus the placement of the speakers) updated steering wheel, the cup holder placement, the center storage/arm rest is further forward, pano roof, more usable trunk space, more comfortable seats, better fuel economy, but the biggest reason is the higher ground clearance. I live just outside of Winnipeg in Stony Mountain and I lost 3 engine protectors on my Mazda 6 Signature this winter due to the amount of snow we received. That and I already have a CX-50 GT turbo metallic machine grey with terra cotta interior on order, lol! One question though, did you find that center stitch that runs down the middle of the seat cushion to be bothersome? The lads on the Straight Pipes channel found it uncomfortable like wearing a g-string. Thanks again for the review!
Hey Brad, I had a CX-5 on order, but I'm really thinking of calling my dealer in the morning and bumping up to the CX-50. Did your dealer give any indication how many weeks or months it would take to get the CX-50 from order?
@@Ok-cb5lw The torsion beam suspension is a much older design. It uses 2 beams “metal rods” that pivot in the middle. I have a CX-50 Turbo, and I think it handles great. I own a 2020 CX5, but admit I like the CX50 more.... looks even better & more cargo space... But given its higher ground clearance & lower roofline, I wonder if a taller person should go with the CX5 instead.
Cx5 looks so dated compared to the new kid. And I don’t know why people are adverse to having some cladding. It looks good and functional. Imagine all that salt brine in Eastern regions during winter just eating away at the thin Mazda sheet metal. Interior is restrained, conventional yet fresh and elegant.
They are both nice vehicles and are on my radar scope to replace the vehicle I am currently driving, if I decide to move on from that car. Interesting discussion below bordering on food fight about the width of these cars. I have looked carefully at the images of the cars and have a theory on the external width and interior dimensions. To my eye the CX-50 looks much larger than the CX-5. I believe, however, that is a styling illusion. Indisputably, however, the WB and OAL are greater on the CX-50. I am presuming for discussion purposes that Mazda used the same measuring protocol for arriving at Mazda's published figures. The more I looked at the images trying to reconcile the greater interior hip and shoulder widths of the CX-5 versus the CX-50 I came to the conclusion it's the shape of what I'll call the main body tub between the wheel wells. It appears to me that the CX-50 has more of a 'coke bottle' shape than the CX-5, the 50 has a more pronounced waist. If I am correct, that may explain the CX-5's greater interior width dimensions, particularly hip room. The differences are about an inch more or less at the shoulder and 2 inches more or less at the hip. Having sat in both cars, interestingly, visually to me, the 50 looks/feels wider. Another crafty styling trick me thinks. As to the exterior, I think we can all agree that putting aside the issue of mirrors the exterior width is measured at, obviously I think, the widest point. Generally speaking, I would guess on modern cars that's probably the front or rear wheel well lip. Mazda's published width difference for these two cars is only .3 inch, call it a quarter of an inch. That's nothing. But ... if my observation of a coke bottle waist on the CX-50 is correct that may suggest that the exterior mirror mounting points are closer to the middle of the car on the CX-50 than the CX-5. Put another way, the lack of a pronounced coke bottle waist on the CX-5 compared to the CX-50 places the 'foot' or mounting point of the 5's mirrors farther apart than on the 50. Therefore, presuming for discussion purposes the mirrors are fairly similarly sized, the 5 is going to measure wider at the mirror extended position than the 50 simply because the 5's body tub between the wheel wells is wider than the 50's body tub between the wheel wells. That would also fit with the 5 being wider inside than the 50. I've also become curious about the "H point" and "R point". While explanations are all over the web, and at least one source published a range of H point dimensions by vehicle type a couple of years ago, I haven't found H point dimensions published by vehicle make and model. The trigger exploration was contemplating the 50's lower roof line and higher ground clearance than the 5. At the end of the day it may not make much difference between the two cars. Arguably the seat mounting point on the 50 is higher than the 5 since the 50 has more ground clearance. Since I am a few inches shorther than the SAE 50th percentile crash test and measurement devices I have to raise the seats anyway!! I wonder if the Motormouth duo could prevail on Mazda to disclose the actual dimensions? take care, be safe.
Great review! I understand that for 2022 Cx-5 is just getting refresh. When will it receive a whole new makeover? The current generation was launched in2017, so it has to happening soon, correct? 2023? Thank you.
The rear seat room in the cx-50 has to to be more than the cx-5 despite the numbers. It just looks roomier. I think the stats from Mazda are misleading there.
if you compare same trims, you will see CX50 is about +3k USD to CX5. You will get a bit better look, big sunroof and touchscreen. I don't think this is justified. If you add +4k to CX5, you can buy CX9, which is another car class. Basically CX50 price is very similar to CX9, and it's not in the favor of CX50. Still a great car, but I would prefer CX5 or CX9.
It's interesting that you come to the opposite conclusion of other car reviewers who say that the CX-50 is a bit harsher of a ride but more sporty than the CX-5.
I hope the upcoming CX-70 offers a similar "off-road" trim package. Something that could complete in size, practicality and on-road off-road to say the Honda Passport/TrailSport trim. The Passport has tons of passenger space and cargo space for five and I think Mazda could benefit with having something similar and the plus side of great driving dynamics and reliability. I know Mazda are trying to go more premium with the CX-70 and CX-90 but there's also great demand for these "off-road" trims too, ex. new Pathfinder, Explorer Timberline, Passport TrailSport etc. I know they're not true off-roaders but the CX-50 Meridian edition with the more aggressive off-road tires and additional ground clearance is a nice trim option to have for folks that do go off the beaten path albeit not full-on Jeep territory!
How would you compare the driving dynamics of the CX-50 to that of the CX-30 given they are on the same platform. I love my CX-30 and am curious if I’d enjoy the larger version just as much.
I bought a new 2021 Mazda CX-5. I believe the CX-50 has the same engine. It burns engine oil from day one. I looked up and found a bulletin for my car to be repaired. I took it in and they agreed that my car fell under that bulletin according to the VIN but, that I had to wait for the engine light to come on. By my calculation that won't happen until one oil change after my warranty is up. Don't take a chance and buy Mazdas. They don't stand by their product unlike Honda for instance. At the time I was shopping for my car, they had fuel dilution problems with some of their engines. Similar to my problem but worse. They put out a bulletin and fix it. Mazda will do whatever it takes to avoid paying to fix the problem, even when they themselves admit that there's a problem.
In my practical opinion, if you’re a family with 2 kids I would pick CX-5. CX-50 if with 3 kids. If you live in state with lots of snow I would prefer CX50.
I just watched 2 guys do this and they come down to STYLE is the only difference basically-- Curious to see if you agree.... I may STILL go the CX-50 because I DO like the style.. :)
@@natlovell122 I know. I personally don't think it had to be quite that low. I'd like to see an inch and a half more height. I don't think that would greatly compromise the design.
@@joalblo9581 I agree, it’s a bit short, I would probably just opt for a CX-5 over the CX-50 due to price and availability anyways. The new CX70 should be here in 2023 and that thing looks absolutely amazing!
They absolutely should not replace the CX5. The CX5 exterior is historic and timeless. They should keep both. I would choose the CX5 if the interior was as nice as the CX50 interior.
I bought the 2022 CX-5 Turbo signature and it pinches above it's price point more luxury and a lot less expensive then the Lexus or Audi Q5 . The Cx-50 is more sporty and less luxury with all the black plastic . CX-50 is competing with Subaru models IMO. I wish that the CX-5 had wireless Android and CX-5 and would be perfect for me.
It appears you are sitting in a CX-5, based on the console and cup holder placement... with a panaramic roof. Is that the case? What package does that come in?
The CX-50 non-turbo gets 9.7L/100km, 24 MPG in the city and 7.9L/100 km, 30 MPG on the highway. The CX-5 non-turbo gets 9.9L/100 km, 24 MPG in the city and 7.9L/100 km, 30 MPG on the highway.
What is not discussed is whether the CX-50 has the shared air-to-water intercooler from the Mazda3 & CX-30 have versus the better air-to-air intercooler that the CX-5 (and CX-9 & Mazda6) has. The packaging in the Mazda3 & CX-30 required a more compact system. Air-to-water is less efficient and prone to heat-soak, and thereby lower performance in hot / hard work situations. Given the increased cooling that the CX-50 has which increased its towing capacity vs. the CX-5, it would be interesting to know what’s what in each.
Mazda can break the market if or when they make a hybrid of these if they can keep that price bump to like 2.5k or so. I would strongly consider these otherwise if they can keep most of the driving characteristics that are trademark Mazda, zoom zoom!
YOU stated it BACKWARD to what everyone else is saying--- saying the CX5 was HEAVIER DRIVING and the CX5o was actuall LIGHTER softer driving... everyone else says the OPPOSITE... I don't care about the towing- etc.. I DO just like the STYLE of the CX50 and IT is the one with the STIFFER suspension... YOu have it backward1!!!

The CX- 5 is built in Japan so it has better quality (Lexus like)than the CX-50. Also the differential and drive shaft on the Cx-50 are not as heavy duty as on the CX-5.They are for a car not an SUV.They saved money everywhere they could (underneath)on the CX-50 so it wont last as long as the CX-5.
The CX-5 Signature styling is far better than the overwrought black plastic cladding on the CX-50. The additional headroom on the CX-5 is needed for us tall Americans 🇺🇸
As always, great video. My only real concern with the CX-50 is the width. I have to see this thing in person to get a feel for it. I hear 3 inches wider than the CX-5 and that's actually quite a bit. Does the car feel big with driving or shoe-horning into a tight parking spot? I like the CX-5 a lot but prefer some of the features (like touch screen) on the CX-50. Plus the Cx-5 looks more like a jelly bean compared to the more sculpted CX-50. The lonely vent in the middle of the dash seems weird on camera. But again, I need to see this thing in person I guess.
@@michaels3003 We got the measurements from Mazda Canada at the launch and there's a 3" difference in width. CX-5 72.6" vs. the CX-50 at 75.6" so that is what all the Canadian journalists went with. There were no dimensions with or without mirrors released at that time.
My wife and I test drove the CX-50 and the CX-30. We are planning on driving the CX-5 in the next few weeks. Between the two that we drove, we felt the CX-30 has a higher quality interior, is much quieter, and the seats were more comfortable than the CX-50, which was loud and felt much cheaper. The extra room in the CX-50 was a positive, and if we do get the CX-30, we'd probably have to get a Thule or something. It will be interesting to see which direction we go after driving the CX-5, which I'm kind of guessing we are eventually going to get because it does have more interior volume and offers a better quality interior than the CX-50.
A friend had a mid level CX5 until recently, then swapped it for a top level 3. I liked the seats and didn’t notice firmness of the suspension. Great car. Mazda in Japan doesn’t currently sell the CX9 or CX50. The CX9 is too wide so a narrow version CX8 is sold there, and I’m guessing it could be the same with the CX50. Maybe in the near future there will be a new CX5…

I wonder if the Motormouth duo could prevail on Mazda to disclose the actual dimensions?
take care, be safe.
which of the two require making more micro-adjustments to the steering wheel while driving?
Cool 😎 Video But the CX-5 🏆 Wins Because the Front-end Does Not Have Fake Vents, More Aerodynamic Appearance!!
Front vent are functional
Great review! I understand that for 2022 Cx-5 is just getting refresh. When will it receive a whole new makeover? The current generation was launched in2017, so it has to happening soon, correct? 2023? Thank you.
Which of the two has the quietest ride?? I've heard that Mazda didn't use the same acoustic glass in the CX50 that they did in the CX5.
The rear seat room in the cx-50 has to to be more than the cx-5 despite the numbers. It just looks roomier. I think the stats from Mazda are misleading there.
I will go for the cx50. It’s new modern and looks fantastic. Can’t wait to get mine this yr lol
Great video you two! Does Canada have different regs and that is why there are different models?
Tailored to each Market
Do either models have a hybrid option?
I'm still debating between the 2024 CX-5 Kuro Edition and the 2024 CX-50 GS-L which are basically the same price...(regular 2.5l)🤔
IF you were to choose between the cx50 and xc40 which would you pick?
I’m surprised that Mazda didn’t at least go with a 7 speed auto? But I do like the look of the new cx-50. Can’t wait to see this design on the CX-9?
Which is quieter? I notice the cx-50 didn’t have the noise isolating front windows
if you compare same trims, you will see CX50 is about +3k USD to CX5.
Can I please know which is the car you guys are sitting in during the talk ?
What’s weird is I had an Audi Q3 rental and when I got back my CX 5 I was like “I hate this steering is way too hard” it’s so bad
CX-50 all the way… mostly on the looks! Also excited for the CX-50 hybrid
I like the new fading turn signals on the Mazda3, CX30 and CX50. I notice in the video it's not on the CX5
Agree with uncomfortable seats. Wife and I took CX5 for 30 min test drive and we both found seats and suspension way too firm!
Short seat bottoms as well
what option did you go for? I found cx5 suspension jumping on the road. I wonder if cx30 or cx50 is more comfortable
In my practical opinion, if you’re a family with 2 kids I would pick CX-5. CX-50 if with 3 kids. If you live in state with lots of snow I would prefer CX50.
You could get some nice cushy inflatable pads for your seats. That way you feel comfy on your way to get groceries or at McDonald’s.

I just watched 2 guys do this and they come down to STYLE is the only difference basically-- Curious to see if you agree.... I may STILL go the CX-50 because I DO like the style.. :)
Let's see a CX-5 Hybrid. I will purchase sight unseen. Should also be a refresh/redesign of the CX-5 SOON.
I'll stick with the CX-5 over the vehicle that's trying to look like a Toyota.
If they raise the roof on the cx50, I'm in.
The lower design is to make things like kayaks easier to get on and off the roof
What year are these cars?
Just picked up my CX50 3 days ago here in BC (just b4 the snow fell) and ICBC calls it a wagon
How did it handle in the snow ?
Never tried to go to far tho
This year it did well
Mazda CX-5 Made in Japan while Mazda CX-50 Made in Alabama.
If we look at Toyota, it makes a difference.
@@reece758 bahahaha

It appears you are sitting in a CX-5, based on the console and cup holder placement... with a panaramic roof. Is that the case? What package does that come in?
There is no panoramic sunroof offering in the CX-5, only a moonroof
Do you know what’s the fuel economy for the non-turbo CX-50? Thx again for that comparison!
The CX-50 non-turbo gets
9.7L/100km, 24 MPG in the city and 7.9L/100 km, 30 MPG
on the highway. The CX-5 non-turbo
gets 9.9L/100 km, 24 MPG in the city and
7.9L/100 km, 30 MPG on the highway.
I wish Mazda Cx-50 would be also available in asia.
I hv Cx5 2021.5, upgrading to cx 50
I would strongly consider these otherwise if they can keep most of the driving characteristics that are trademark Mazda, zoom zoom!
i think the meridian trim is more practical
The black plastic trim is the one thing they got 100% wrong
YOU stated it BACKWARD to what everyone else is saying--- saying the CX5 was HEAVIER DRIVING and the CX5o was actuall LIGHTER softer driving... everyone else says the OPPOSITE... I don't care about the towing- etc.. I DO just like the STYLE of the CX50 and IT is the one with the STIFFER suspension... YOu have it backward1!!!
I like the CX-50 more, but having the turn signal on the bottom of the car….that’s just a bad idea
No offence but I hate when channels tell you to subscribe every single video. Anyone who uses RUclips knows how to subscribe if they like a channel we really dont need you telling us every single video
I still don’t know the different between a sunroof and a moonroof
When started to leak , doesn’t matter sunroof or moonroof , speaking of personal experience !
For me, a moonroof covers almost all of the roof area, whereas a sunroof is much smaller.
Depends what time of day it is.
The CX-5 is looking long in the tooth. The CX-50 is dialed.
Nice review as always! You guys do allow time for yourselves to eat and sleep, right? :-)
Haha, sometimes!!!
good
Is just me or do the CX-50 looks like a Subaru outback?
Cx50 looks like it has a wider stance and more substantial than the cx5 to me. I could be wrong ……don’t want to offend anyone 😃
It is 3" wider than the CX-5.
According to Mazda USA, the width difference is 0.3" when the side mirrors are not taken into account.
@@michaels3003 We got the measurements from Mazda Canada at the launch and there's a 3" difference in width. CX-5 72.6" vs. the CX-50 at 75.6" so that is what all the Canadian journalists went with. There were no dimensions with or without mirrors released at that time.
@@andreaspencer9813 , yes, it is possible that the Mazda USA specification is incorrect.
@@michaels3003 Could be, I guess we'll see as more measurements are released
Torsion beam is one thing, crappy seats is yet another. That's a no-go, for me.
Go with cx5 instead
Start test driving the base models. Most people can’t afford the ones you review.
CX-50 definitely does not have a softer suspension--and feels more like a sport wagon than CUV.
Sorry but these new thumbnail designs look cheap and low budget; when actually you guys have high quality production value! Great vids either way!
We thought we would try them out, thanks for letting us know you are not crazy about them. Should we just go back to the old ones?
