- We revisit the 2023 Mazda CX-5 in this video. This is easily one of the best Mazda models. It looks good, drives good and has exceptional build quality but is it getting old for 2023?
The Mazda CX5 continues unchanged for the 2023 model year and in this video we'll take a look at what made it good. We'll also take a look underneath it, outside and inside. Then we'll visit the few things that I didn't like about it.

I have a 2016 CX-5, and I absolutely love this vehicle. Absolutely the best trouble-free vehicle I have ever owned. Just reached 100k miles without any issues. 5k oil changes, transmission fluid change and just recently replaced the coolant. That is it folks. Hats off to the Mazda engineers! Zoom Zoom!

I have a 2020 CX-9 and a 2021 Mazda 6. I love both of them, especially the 6. I got the 6 after being impressed so much with the CX-9. After owning Toyotas and Hondas, Mazdas just seem better screwed together, a bit higher quality and for sure more engaging to drive.
I wish you the best after 100k. That's where the problems start in most cars.

are they reliable awd compared to fwd? should I buy the fwd to have more fuel effiency?
@@michaeljohnsalik2293AWD is also reliable, FWD is not an option on 2022+ MY. The AWD System disconnects completely from the rear diff and transfer case when not needed which helps save gas, the FWD will still get better fuel economy though.
What's the story with cylinder deactivation? I have a 2018 2.5L, no turbo. I read they all have that from 2018 on. Any exceptions to that?

Oil control solenoids on the front cover and back of the cylinder head will be there if you have cylinder deactivation. Not a big deal. Don’t think there’s a way to shut it off but it’s really not noticeable while driving and doesn’t cause any issues

This guy should have way more subscribers. He actually gives viewers what they want to hear. As much as different tech features and interior aesthetics are nice, most reviews already cover that. What people want to know, which a lot of channels don't go into, is the actual reliability of the car, from the engine to the underside of the car.
You should see the Palisade review that he did recently. Given that it's a Hyundai, it's not surprising how poorly engineered and old it really is under the hood.
For example, it's still using the Lambda II 3.8L V6, more or less the same design made since 2005. It doesn't even have hydraulic lifters, and it has a plastic oil filter housing! While plastic and engine oil isn't necessarily a bad combo, it's all too easy to destroy the housing if it is improperly removed or tightened.
Go watch that video, it's a real eye opener, you'll never want a Hyundai lmao

I bought my 2023 cx5 premium after my 97 corolla died beyond reasonable repair last month.. I never imagined myself getting a Mazda, as I've been dead-set on buying a Rav4 for MANY years when my car died. I was ABSOLUTELY blown away when I did my test drive at how much more refined the cx5 was than the rav4. Plus, the dealership had plenty of new inventory in stock, which was actually cheaper than buying even a 2018 Rav4 with 35,000 miles....... No regrets on the car. Love it

I tested the '22 CX-5 and in terms of driving feel and engine responsiveness, it absolutely blew away the RAV4. Stepping on the gas pedal in the '22 RAV4 made you feel like there's an artificial bit of lag between when your foot presses down and when the car decides to give you power, and this was just in 1st gear without any up or down shifting happening.
The CX-5 also handled quite a bit better around the corners and on the road, which is noticeable even in normal driving.
The CX-5 is also made in Japan, so you got that J VIN build quality and fit/finish too.

Just bought a 2023 CX-5 Premium for my wife, and I'm loving it.. As a Mechanical Engineer, I love the top notch quality without useless over-engineering and Mazda is the king of this .. This is my 3rd new mazda I've purchased in a row. I still have my 2011 mazda 3 with 185k miles, (my daily driver), and my wife's old 2012 Mazda 5 with 130k miles.. Both of these cars have been flawless, neither of them ever having a mechanical failure in their combined 315k miles of driving.. I simply change fluids, filters etc on schedule, and they just keep running.. Heck my Mazda 3 still has the original brakes on it...crazy stuff..

@@7CFlo Does not have it. I have a 2023 and it does not have cylinder deactivation. Mazda had a chip shortage so only the first two months of production had that feature. It was dropped from the car after that to save chips. Mine was built much later in the year so no such deactivation.
@@roostersideburns3440 No. Ford sold Mazda in 2008. The first version of the CX-5 came out in 2012. No CX-5s have any Ford technology in them. Some of the other cars developed before this model did however still at that time.
Mazda does red SO WELL. That color just turns heads.
Finally... a mechanic that knows his "stuff" and isn't afraid to tell it like it is! Great review! And... He's correct about the Mazda brand - Brilliant engineers. No One needs a ten-speed transmission! Six speed is just fine and 95.5% of buyers don't care about this anyway. (Except for us car nuts.) Mazda makes great cars and they're not afraid to stay away from crappy mechanical designs (CVT's etc.) I drove a MX-5 for 16 years and it was the best car I ever owned. Go MAZDA!😃
Did you leave out any problems you had with the vehicle or did not have any? They all break down.
@@bwest-yq3uc Normal maintenance on mine. Timing belts, Oil changes, Coolant, hoses and a radiator. Everything else just ran and ran...
Mazda also stays away from tiny 1.5 liter turbocharged engines, because they don't last long either.
@@bwest-yq3uc Not every car breaks down before 150k miles. I have heard of many Japanese cars going 200k on just regular oil changes.
@@danmarjenka6361meh. If a 1.8 NA Toyota motor can go 300k miles. A lightly turbo’d car like the Jetta should be able to do the same or close. They’ve made more direct inject engines than anybody with their diesels.

I love my 2016 Touring CX-5. Bought it brand new, paid in full, and I've had absolutely zero problems with it in over 8 years thus far. Easily the best car I've ever owned. I get synthetic oil changes and tire rotations every 5k miles strictly on the dot. I do my own annual maintenance like swap out the 3 wiper blade inserts and 2 air filters annually. Also changed out the battery once on my own with a Costco Interstate. Batteries these days will last you only 3-4 years, so be proactive and change them out before you get any trouble. So easy to DIY maintain this vehicle! I have the FWD non-turbo with sunroof/Bose stereo package. Still running smooth on original brakes and my original Yokohama Geoloanders with no problem. I average 30mpg highway! I have sonic silver and it still looks showroom new after all these years. I run it monthly through a touchless wash. I plan to keep this car FOREVER with the way things are going.
Mazda, as a small automaker, is smart for taking something solid & then constantly tweaking it for an extended period of time, instead of trying to reinvent the wheel every 4-5 years with a completely new model version. They also use the same basic engine/drivetrain/etc. across all their model lines. That is essentially how Toyota originally gained their (now outdated) reputation for quality (sticking to certain proven tech for longer periods of time). I finally switched to Mazda in 2022, after a pretty dismal 2020 model year Toyota ownership experience.

You get a beautiful car that looks more expensive than what it actually is and no one should complain about that and besides a man or woman can drive it because it has some masculinity to it as some of the SUVs that are too rounded in the front

I own a 2013 I bought in late 2012. 215,000 miles and I had my first repair. 1 Coil pack. I changed all 4 and plugs in front of Parts store for around $400. Also developed valve cover leak after my warm florida car was in freezing weather -1 degrees. That was done in the driveway for $20. Brakes twice and frequent oil changes and I am ready for the next 200k.

I just bought a 2024 model. Isn’t even in the market yet. Me and my wife test drove a 2023 and fell in love. Seems to be the most bang for your buck crossover. Very luxurious, drives like a sports car and according to the internet is a very reliable vehicle.

I don’t know what kind of review this is when I’ve only watched 5 minutes and 2 things are already wrong. The Mazda is definitely not quiet. And there certainly is a delay when accelerating (to the point that it’s dangerous when you’re trying to speed up and merge on the highway). Definitely selling my 2022 Mazda CX-5
@@alb0zfinest , dunno what is wrong with your cat but I've not experienced any delay while accelerating. And regirding the sound - compared to rav4 or kia sportage - it's much quieter . Compared to Q7 - well yea, audi would be quieter but it falls under completely different price segment.

Maybe something is wrong with your engine or your driving style and expectations of the performance don’t match.

Thank you for this video. I have been a Toyota customer for over 30 years. Recently my 4Runner had to go after 20 years due to frame rust and hydraulic failure. Went to the dealer to buy a replacement, looking at a change to a smaller SUV, in this case the RAV4. I did not like the gasoline only model because of lack of power and very noisy. They had absolutely no stock of any vehicles on their lot. This was the same with every dealership for all of eastern Ontario. I ordered a RAV4 Hybrid but would not get delivery until December 2024. Well. I needed a vehicle right now and Toyota was selling their used RAV4, Camry, and other cars in some cases over $5,00.00 over the price of a new one. That when I started to look at other vehicle and came to find Mazda had new stock on hand. Did a lot of research of the company and vehicles, including this fantastic video from the car nut guy, that I’ve followed for years now. When you listen to him, a previous Toyota master technician, he knows a lot about all cars. Anyway, I made the plunge and bough5 myself a 2023 Mazda Signature Turbo in June that is Made in Japan, awesome quality, RAV4 Limited Hybrid I ordered doesn’t even come close. Needless to say, I cancelled the RAV4. In conclusion, I am now a Mazda customer with absolutely no regrets. If you need a vehicle, check out Mazda. You will be amazed at the quality, reliability and performance of their vehicles.
For me, a modern Mazda hold it's self to the standard the Toyota use to. Not that Toyota has lost it's away, but it's not what it use to be.

People need seriously look at the revamped mazada line. Toyota bought majority ownership of mazada in 2016. And most mazada are now using same engineering and similar parts as Toyota, and they are built in same plants as Toyota. The new 6 sp dual clutch transmission (not a cvt) is being used every where beats a toyota cvt.
My 2015 cx5 is way better than my moms 2020 rav4 and i bought it dirt cheap $7k with 110k miles. The cheapest rav4 in that age, mileage is $15k. My 2015 cx5 gets better 33-34 mpg , is quieter, handles road better, interior is way nicer than any rav4.
Wow, except for it being in 2022, my story is almost identical to yours. So glad I canceled the RAV4 and bought the CX5. Every drive puts a smile on my face and I look for reasons to drive it. It's that good.
Love your detailed review focusing on more of the mechanical aspects of this CX-5 turbo signature model. The quality is usually above the other manufacturers ( made in Japan door jamb label is a big plus ). Driving dynamics also take a higher priority versus the competition.
Glad that you are branching to do reviews on other car models. I have a 2014 CX-5 and that car is a joy to drive and my wife drives a Mazda Biante MPV. Never give us any problems.
Will be passing ithe CX-5 down to my son soon and upgrade to a CX-90 when that car is released.

Great review, great information! I've been driving Mazdas since 1988 and never a day in the shop except normal maintenance. I bought a new 2022 CX-5 last year and I love everything about it. It was a bit of a leap for me: 1) my first SUV 2) my first automatic transmission 3) my first all-wheel-drive 4) and believe it or not my first car that didn't have manual crank-down windows! (Only base models for me until now.) So I am NOT hungry for more tech. This car has far more tech than I need, and it's the next-to-base model.
This guy is refreshing to listen to and gives accurate detailed technical information. He lends his opinion on subjective aspects with a fair and non biased approach! Better than 99.9% of the “legend in your own mind” types on youtube. I hereby rename thee” Car Care Sage”!

I like that the center screen has a very simple display, not cluttered with stuff like my girlfriend's Accord though hers is a very nice car. I also much prefer the control knob over a touch screen in a car.
@@robertd9850 I agree on the control knob. Much easier to manage with occasional glances to the screen, rather than total refocus from road to screen needed with a touch screen.

I just bought me a 2024 Mazda CX-5 Select and one of the reasons is this man's two videos on the car. Granted I've only had it 3 days and 127 miles on it, but I cannot complain. I'm glad I traded my 2012 Hyundai Elantra for this car. I just wish I could have gotten the blue or the red instead of the gray.

I own a 2014 Mazda 6 with the 2.5 Skyatic powertrain. It has been an absolute dream to own. Zero issues in almost 9yrs and and 105k. It definitely feels a little down on power and MPG vs when it was new, so im sure it probably needs the valves cleaned but still plenty quick and the interior build quality has held up.....other than the well documented steering wheel cover of course.
AMD has been flirting with Mazda for a while now. Maybe he knows deep down that Mazda is the new Toyota in terms of quality and reliability.

Great review . The CX-5 is the most genius design . Simple yet functional with very proven and trusted old school technology with Beautiful interior . The CX-5 is not competing with Toyota RAV4 or Subaru or other suvs in this segment . It is way more quality oriented that even BMW X3 or X5 cannot come close to it . I don't care about latest technology with 500 sensors that can break down any minute . CX-5 has Excellent ride quality . Handling . Quietness and driving dynamics . The best in its class .
Its like they're following Toyota's old playbook.. Simple, proven, but nice enough. No cheapness on anything you touch or look at. Like what Toyota products would/could have been like if they didn't pull a GM start cost cutting in early 2000s.
I own a 2016 I bought new. I still love it! Starts fine without being plugged in in -30 celcius. Works excellent in winter conditions with deeper snow. Looks good, easy to drive and park downtown and it’s plenty fast enough.

Because this guy who wears this classic coverall of a car mechanic seems like a guy you can really trust. And off course, he really knows what he is talking about.
Simplicity of this eingine and transmission is the best thing about this car and that is exactly what the guy pointed out. Many people would say it is slow because it is 2,5L eingine with "only" 194 bhp and no turbo. But those are the people that don't have idea that if you take small egine and put turbo or 2 or 3 turbos in it, it will have a much bigger pressure in the engine and will release bigger temperature. All fo these things will lead to comlications and mailfunctions in the future. That is why Mazda keeps it plain and simple. A car that looks great, feels great, has enough power for a great passenger car and is built to last.
And I totaly agree about the electronic hatch. People are proud when they can open the trunk with a single button and they are trying to impress others by doing that. What they don't understand that all this kind of electronic features will break some day and when they do, it won't be simple and cheap to repair.

I have a 2019 CX-5 GT Turbo. Best car I ever owned. No issues what so ever in 4 years. Will keep this car till I die. So much fun to drive and wife loves the look and supportive seats. I love the passing power most.

We are on our second CX-5. First was a 2018 GT, and the new one is a 2023 non-turbo Premium Plus. They drive excellent and the engine is quite responsive. I much prefer the command knob over a touch screen. The command dial is fantastic, to be honest. Also, I never felt the front end bump that AMD mentioned. The A-pillar is also not an issue at all. Otherwise, mostly accurate review.
I'm over the touchscreen, never use it.
I love my Bose sound system. What's the problem?
@@derricksearles610There is no problem. It’s an excellent system with heaps of boom boom. Some the car care nut's views are just that, his views, that doesn’t make them fact. He criticised the heads up display yet I find it pretty awesome. The control dial is also excellent. But hey that’s just my view. I do find the A pillars a bit chunky though.
I just bought a 2019 with 30,000 miles. I do like the command knob as well. Easier to control while driving for sure.

I got a Mazda 6 GT 2021, love how the car handles and drives and zooms at higher speeds with just a little touch of the gas. Same soul red crystal metallic color too.
I have 2022 mazda cx5 ce. and the more i put millage into it. the more the drive gets better! Great car handles corner real good enough power to accelerate on the freeway easy to merge! and the look simple yet elegant timeless! Unlike other over styled car.
I was told by the service dept that the transmission is adaptive, so the more you drive the better it will perform to your driving habits.
I know this video is a year old but can you please do more like this with other car brands? I have found this SO thorough and so helpful. As someone who cares about everything (not just the looks or the engine) I really appreciate you doing a full walk around (and under) of the vehicle, pointing out good points and weak points. This is great. I have watched your videos on the Rav4 Prime since we have one but we also have a 2021 CX5 Signature. The 23 is virtually unchanged except for a minor refresh.
I really appreciate these reviews! I really appreciate seeing how a vehicle is built which is missing from most reviews. I can take it for a test drive and see the layout of the buttons myself.

Nice review. I'm on my third Mazda (all leased), and second CX-5. My first Mazda was a 2016 Mazda3 hatchback Touring 2.0. Great little car, excellent fuel economy. Only thing was that it wasn't great if the streets weren't properly plowed of snow (Long Island, NY). So in 2018 I traded up to a 2018 CX-5 AWD Touring (non-turbo). In 2020 I went to a 2020 CX-5 FWD (in Florida no snow, so no need for AWD) Touring (again non-turbo). I find that the base 2.5 has more than enough power for me. When I need to accelerate quickly I just mash the gas pedal down and it takes off like a rocket, in normal mode (not even sport mode). It handles great, excellent brakes, and is reliable. Mine all have the display being touch screen, but only at stop or very slow speeds (I believe up to 10 mph). Above that you have to use the knob. Personally I think that touch screens in moving cars is just as dumb as using a hand held cell phone.
Now I'm looking at the CX-50, because I like that it has a longer and wider cargo area than the CX-5. Again, non-turbo. I also don't like the Bose system because the subwoofer sits in the middle of the spare, which is where I like to keep my jumper cables. Also, on the subject of spare tires, Mazda including spare tires is one of the reasons I went with Mazda back in 2016. At the time I got the Mazda3 I was also considering comparable models from Kia and Hyundai. But they didn't come with a spare, plus they were about to be replaced with new versions for 2017, so I went with Mazda3. I'm glad I did, because a year later when driving I hit a monster pothole, which had claimed about a dozen other cars that morning. It cracked the right front alloy wheel, causing a loss of air. If I didn't have the spare I would have needed to be towed, but because I had the spare, I was able to drive the car to the dealer to check what other damage had been caused by the impact with the pothole (fortunately none). Just had to replace the wheel and get an alignment.

Love this channel, and a major reason why I went with Mazda. Never owned an import in my life. With prices so crazy now, I looked at damn near every small SUV out there. For the money, this is the most reliable, and well equipped vehicle, period. Got my 2023 Mazda CX5 Carbon edition just a few months ago, can already say best vehicle I have ever owned.
Having owned an "All Singing - All Dancing" Audi A6 with touch controls for nearly everything needing the driver to take their eyes out of forward field of vision, give me the rotary dial and elevated screen every time.
I have the 2019 CX5 Grand touring Preffered, with turbo. Great vehicle, and I have no problem with the pillars, and the six speed transmission is fine. The audio system not the greatest though. I find it sounds better after I unplugged the sub woofer. I do recommend the turbo option, but still a nice car without.
Your videos have taught me what to look at in purchasing a new vehicle. This time, for me, you pointed out a few negatives that will keep me from purchasing the CX5. Although a stylish SUV, the alloy wheels appear as if from the early to mid 2000s. As always thank you for your expert analysis.

Great review! thanks! My CX-5 doesn't have the Bose Audio system, but I'm pretty sure that if you go to Audio settings you'll find "Advance Mode" which enables a very cool 13 band EQ

Just leased a 2023 cx5 turbo and have watched many reviews. One thing I have yet to hear anyone mention is that the headlights turn when turning a corner (at least on my model).

Great video....thanks! I had a 2007 Lexus ES350 and then bought a '21 CX-5. My one and only beef. is that the "hopping" (as you said), is very annoying. I too would have wanted the "mid" adjust with the EQ - I agree, completely! And I did add an Alpine 12" subwoofer in a sealed type enclosure, driven by a JL Audio amp, to address that "missing bass" you were talking about!

i own 2013 cx5 2.2d awd manual shifter,had minor problems when new,was fixed under warranty,got low km,76k,so far i only had to exchange ball joints front and back and break pads, had problems with dpf but they fixed that with different oil cap i think,wish there was a dpf warning light though
AMD, The independent rear suspension in the CX-5 will never get old. The torsion beam in their other CUVs and cars will get old really quickly. On the positive side, I wish Toyota would follow Mazda in sharing their efficient and powerful 2.5 engine across multiple models . The Corolla Cross and Corolla could really use it.
The transmission will be great! Toyota’s transmission feel sluggish
The torsion beam rear axle was around on the 2010 Mazda2, they just went that same cheap route on their current cars and CUVs. I doubt they will be adding more independent suspensions, when this platform dies that will be it.

I have a 2021 Turbo CX-5. It is a great car. I don't consider it outdated because it has all the technology I want (plus some I don't really care about) and neither stands out from the crowd nor gets lost in it. When I come out of the gym or grocery store and look at the cars, all the late model SUV's pretty much look the same so I see no reason for Mazda to rush to change the CX-5.
I have a 2014 cx5 GT, bought with 45000 miles, just turned 150000, replaced both front and rear brakes, tires, transmission service at 99000, Coolant change at 12000, Oil changes at 7 to 8000 with additive, (castrol 0 20w used 1/2 qt, Kendall 0 20w uses 1 qt) use 91 non ethanol since I owned it no issues with idle or signs of valve issues, tight steering, original exhaust, few paint chips on front, no rust any where and here the roads get chemicals when there are flurries, Had 08 cx-9 before drove to 180000 ford engine started to leak in rear main seal, I sold Mazda's in early 90's, buy a Mazada that has a vin number that starts with a J

Great detailed review, the Cx5 generally is a good car I have a 2016 and and the transmission is a dream, however, the diesel engine is somewhat troublesome if I buy another it will be the same model but with the petrol engine, the petrol engines made by mazda are truly trouble free engines.
My wife just upgraded her 2017 CX-5 for a 2024. It's mostly the same, but that's a good thing. Ride and noise levels seem improved and tech is slightly better. Also, I have a Subaru Outback and it's one of the other rare models that offer a turbo and non-turbo engine in the same trims. Mine is a 2015 non-turbo and I'd gladly trade up to another non-turbo. It's a great car, although painfully underpowered at times.

We have had a 2.5 petrol CX-5 LTD 4WD for 3 years since new and have had 40000ks of absolutely trouble free motoring . It is a great family car . We love it

Well that's one advantage. Less weight means more fuel efficiency and better performance. Though the refinements are still a nice addition.
The best most accurate review I’ve seen on RUclips…….The pillar is something that I thought was just in my mind. I found that it plays as a blindspot especially on turns. I use a seat cushion and that has resolved as I’m on 5”4”
The car is hoppy I thought it was because of the tires I guess not. Other than that I love my 2021 Carbon Edition Turbo👍
Great review! Just picked up a 2023 hoping for 200k miles with basic maintenance.
After test driving and researching the major Japanese brands and Korean names , i chose the CX 5 as my first non German car ! One reason or the major reason was 1) how simple the car is non gimmicky things here and there , its pretty much as old school as you could get in 2021. I chose the second model from the bottom (Touring) mainly bec it doesnt have leather ( it cooks and dries in Florida) . It also had the lowest insurance cost among other similar small SUVsand according to IIHS super tough crash 40 MPH offset testing it was the only model to pass with a Good Rating . And the transmission has a diostick ! Cant find that anymore. Ive done 2 long 1200 miles each (5 plus hours behind the wheel) , super comfortable seats ! In comparison my 5 series BMW feels like your sitting on concrete slabs after 2 hours . Ive driven it fast ( over 100mph ) and feels solid even zig zagged at that speed and felt reassured ..no wobbling uneasy feeling. Gripes !!? Very few 1) smallish gas tank for highway travel range is 320 or so miles a couple more gallons would help the range anxiety, 2) Plastic thermostat housing ….3) I would have liked to see more aluminum in the suspension control arms ( for longevity. )
The dealership expeerience has been excellent in Miami ( the Rudeness capital of the US ) in comparison the upscale BMW dealer always makes u feel as if youre asking for a free favor. Sinve ive owned german cars all my life, when I bought the Mazda ( new) i immediately bought extra oil and coolant - because i dont leave home without that on my BMWs ….never had to use that on my Mazda ..
22 cx5 signature was also my first non German coming from Mercedes and I love it.

The screen on my 2020 CX-5 is touch capable but only when you’re not moving. I realized this like 2 years into owning the car. It won’t allow touch while driving as a safety measure but when stopped or in park you can swipe the screen and touch on the screen to operate it when I use Apple CarPlay.
80k miles on my 2014 mazda 3 gt. No trouble with just regular maintenance and very easy to work on. Gets 35-40mpg. The looks didn't age at all and it rides as well as it did when it bought it.
Had car for 10 years and used my spare twice. But it came in handy. Did notice the popping feeling while test. Nice looking vehicle.
Still have a 2014 that I bought new. 140k miles and it’s easily the best car I ever owned. The fit and finish is so good it makes my 2017 F150 look like it was assembled by gerbils. It’s stunning the level of quality Mazda can churn out.
American Korean and German cars is a trash
Just bought a 2023 Carbon Edition last month, after owning a 2014 CRV. No doubt a little smaller in cargo space, but better ride quality and seating comfort. No turbo, no cvt; just a standard 6 speed automatic. It may seem behind on technology, but I'm okay with the "old school" luxury feel. Gas mileage to 34 mpg freeway, 29 in mixed driving. Great curb appeal and simple luxury.
Sounds awesome! Mazda interior quality is ahead of their league.

I have the non-turbo 2018 model and can say this: At stop and go she has pick up, at higher speeds of 70-80 mph range you definitely feel it get sluggish.
