This is probably the best channel I have ever seen when reviewing vehicles. New or old. The honesty is so appreciated. I’ve been a mechanic for 20 years and I find it very informative when looking for a vehicle for my daughter. Keep up the awesome work.
Sorry for the long post - have a lot of information to share :) The point regarding DPF is understandable but this point really only applies to any diesel that is purchased by urban dwellers that don’t know better. Diesels must have their legs stretched. With the Skyactiv-D engines, this is stressed in the manual allowing for the DPF to burn off particulates. But many don’t leading to issues. This is the single caveat. With this said, this diesel is a peach! I purchased the a CX-5 from the first Skyactiv-D CX-5 shipment back in early 2012 after spending a lot of time in Japan speaking with car nuts. It really is a diesel unlike anything on the market and really is the best engine in the CX-5 range (if the above caveat is taken seriously). There are several reasons for this. Firstly, the engine was borne out of numerous university studies into reduction of emissions through low compress (diesels are usually high compression). Mazda was the first and only car manufacturer to attempt a low compression diesel. The Skyactiv-D engine is still the only low compression diesel on the market having a compression ratio of 14:1 rather than the 16:1 to 18:1 of other diesels. The only negative of this is cold temperate startup, which is resolved by exhaust recirculation on startup (a reason the engine is noisy when warming up). But the positives far outweigh this single negative. Positive 1: Being low compression for a diesel means that the engine can be built out of lighter component reducing weight. Positive 2: The engine has a broader rpm range sitting halfway between a typical petrol and diesel - this reduces vibration and noise. It’s certainly a diesel, but at 14:1 it loses the agricultural sounds of something like a Tiguan diesel. Positive 3: Emissions are lower than other diesels. This one is interesting, because when it was released, it passed Euro V easily but more work was needed for Euro VI and Mazda had a 6 year program to detune engine for EPA (US) during which period, VW was sending EPA approved engines to the US (as we know, using a dyno cheat to get this certification). What did come out of that was that both the German and Japanese governments audited their local manufacturers Diesel engines. Germany did not release results, but it’s well known all manufacturers were exceeding emissions (i.e. cheating). Meanwhile, Japan did release results and the Skyactiv-D was the only engine that did on the road, what they published (meaning that Mazda was being honest, and a reason for example they refused to export to the US until they did have an engine capable of EPA). This is a German test where the car is run normally up to 100,000km to find faults then stripped down to every last nut and bolt looking for wear and tear. They applauded the vehicle and engine stating that Audi for example should take note. The engine at 100,000km appear to have barely 50,000km wear. Autobild did an original endurance test on the original 2012 model passing with flying colours. They recently released a new one: www-autobild-de.translate.goog/artikel/mazda-cx-5-dauertest-20375989.html?_x_tr_sl=auto&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en-US&_x_tr_pto=wapp "the hard endurance test work of the CX-5 can hardly be seen"" This is major praise given AutoBild's Dautest is known through the industry as among the hardest showing flaws in every vehicle they test (Mazda is one of the few brands to have a couple of faultless tests through their 20 years of doing them) Other highlights were that Mazda has a policy of engineering where necessarily and keeping things straightforward where reliability is important. The auto transmission in the Mazda’s of late (Skyactiv-Drive) is superb!! It’s a torque convertor with slight change to the way the clutch plate work (almost locked up the entire time). This is noticeable in it’s use, and of note, many of the US car reviewers (such as Savagegeese and Car Care Nut Remix) that are very technical, go as far as to say hands down, this is the best auto transmission on any mainstream vehicle - and every one of them have said it’s so good, they completely overlook the fact it has 6 gears. I now have two Skyactiv-D Mazda’s (CX-5 and CX-8). They’re fun to drive, and superbly reliable when driven properly. Love the engine and the transmission. Quality and reliability are top notch.
Thank you for this! I become hesitant in getting the diesel version of this car after it was mentioned in this video to avoid them and opt for gas instead. This at least put me at some ease :)
@@logmeinhere you can't go wrong with either engine. One bonus with the petrol (Skyactiv-G) version in Australia at least is that Mazda Australia is migrating to an annual/15k service schedule, and reducing the price on these services. Great this about this is that when servicing schedules change, Mazda Australia is quick to apply this to all vehicles of the same make, and details must stick to the very clear and advertised fixed servicing pricing. Mazda Australia is very proactive with keeping service centres monitored to ensure that servicing is not only to a high standard, but customer service is as well. It's the way that Mazda has become not only one of the most trusted brands in Australia (leading to return sales), but one of the most trusted brands in Australia. Diesels will maintain the 10k service schedule. They're far more sensitive to regular oil changes (particularly with the fact that most Mazda diesels are city vehicles lacking a stretch of the legs).
@@robcig yes, seems turbos will also be 10k. Japanese companies tend to be very conservative with their servicing. It’s ironic though because mechanically many of the decisions Japanese companies make with the functional parts of the car are often demonstrably more reliable than similar parts on European cars. Euro brands will often go the route of trying something new out only to find sometimes the new route is great, and sometimes the new thing proves to be a reliability liability. The MX-5 though is a super interesting car to use as an example. Mazda over engineered and over specified many components on the MX-5 mainly because they know that a very small subset of them are track cars. Regular consumers see the benefit of this in extreme reliability. So what you have in the MX-5 is a car that could easily handle long service intervals, but a car company that would rather you show up often than get a fault. (Sorry thought you wrote MX-5 only to facepalm knowing they don’t turbo those…. I’m so grateful that Mazda exists. It’s as reliable as Toyota, but feels far more premium and fun to drive for the same money, and as the old adage goes feels like you’re getting a vehicle and not an appliance. Toyota would gladly upsell you into a Lexus if you were after something premium.

Bought a 2019 CX-5 in July at the advice of our Grandson and absolutely love it. Handles really well. Had to get use to all the bells and wistles. Love the automatic headlights and cruise .
An Aussie here. Bought a CX-5 GT in Soul Red Metallic back in 2018 brand new after much research. One of the few Japanese manufacturers to use a torque converter and not a cvt gearbox, which was an advantage. Nice blend of luxury interior. Had the recall to fix the software controlling the cylinder deactivation, two leaking rear shocks replaced during a service, and had the motorised wing mirrors fail too possibly due to water ingress all replaced under warranty. I experienced the flaky paint where it chipped off and never thought Mazda would do anything about it. I contacted Mazda who did an inspection and agreed to a full respray. Kudos to Mazda. I will definitely consider the brand for another car.
And even then your experience is probably the worst it gets for a reliable mainstream Japanese car like this bar a very rare few lemons I’d guess. Compared to Euro car where the worst it gets is the car being totally undriveable and the repair bill isn’t picked up by the manufacturer. 90% of Mazdas probably wouldn’t have even had the leaky shocks or mirror motors die, your experience is probably in the minority and even then you deemed it to be a minor issue fixed quickly without much fuss.
Lost count on how many 2nd hand cars I've gone through over the years. Bought my first new car a 2017 Mazda CX-5 GT with sunroof, black leather seats (love the 10spk sound system) and towbar, doesn't need turbo, it's Soul Red fast and gorgeous. Great car for its class and price. I think I’ll hang on to this one for a while. Great review.
Best part is it actually will let you hang onto it should you so choose. Had you gone for a VW, the Euro alternative for this price bracket, it’s probably close to having some sort of issue crop up by now.
I'm in the US. I have a 2014 with 110k miles on it. I've done nothing to it other than oil, tires, brakes, and belts. It's the most reliable car I've ever owned. I recently have had an issue with the power seat. Not sure if I have something stick in the track or if the motor has gone bad. I'm taking it in soon to find out.
@@gkcarpenter98 Over 130k miles now.. Seat issue was a frayed cable. Mazda wanted to charge me $900 for a new seat. I fixed it myself with a $3 part from Home Depot. kind of a pain because I removed the seat to get to it, but relatively easy fix with RUclips guidance. I did have to get some other work done last year that cost me over $1k (tie rod ends, I forget what else, etc., etc.) Overall still the best car I've owned and still going strong. I think I need a trans fluid flush soon.

Sounds pretty good but power seat sounds early, have a toyota camery 2001 sle v6 convertible, power seats still good, 188, 000 miles....wish the new rav 4s were as good as 2017 etc.
Bought a 2016 CX-5 Touring edition and love it! Love the way it handles especially. Only trouble we've had after 100,000 miles is one defective headlight, which Mazda replaced at no costs, and two broken rear coil springs.
I also got a used cx5 2016 model GS...Superb performance. fast, fun to drive, gas efficient, handling is good. the only thing i dont like is the sporty shock absorber, too bumpy. its a reliable car, very comparable to Toyota standards. The only issue I have is the front wheel bearing needs to be replaced. It got damaged due to the nasty potholes here in Toronto.
Was it diesel or petrol? I'm thinking about buying an Diesel Cx-5 for Towing, eventhough it would be the first gen with the first face-lift (2015-2016)
There's a good reason why the CX5 is so popular - quality throughout. Have a 2015 KE Grand Touring 2.2lt TD with 180000km. It'll tow my 4m tinny on 1000km trips no problems, seats 4 adults comfortably and has all the features one would need. You get out of the car after long drives feeling very good, not drained. I'll drive it until it dies, then look at another one...
No issues at all with engine oil level rising / carbon build up / blockages? Which can destroy engine in the matter of minutes when it happens. Mine is at 140k (bought at 135k) and found now that this is a common problem with their diesels. Lucky I could stop immediately and only cooping a $3k bill. Now looking at selling and buying a Petrol version.
Your experience echos Autobild's endurance testing in Germany (which does a rapid 100,000km and then checks every part down to bolts for wear and tear). The very experience Germany option (translated): "Conclusion: Mazda can pat itself on the back. With no defects worth mentioning and with flawless workshop performance, the grade 1 shines in the final certificate" This is for the 2017 CX-5, but the original was so good that it almost became of of the few fault free cars (and in a couple of decades of this German magazine testing cars, Mazda still holds record for most number of flawless cars).

@@luckystrike656 My Girlfriend has a 2021 cx-5, for 6 Months now, got it with 30k kms on it. It's a 194hp non turbo one, it get going not to bad and we average 9l on 100km on it, in summer it's more like 8,5l/100km. Can't go wrong with mazda, i myself drive a mazda 6 2020 with also the 194 2.5l petrol (same engine). Rock solid cars, mine is at 75k km my girlfriends cx-5 at 40k km. Got just 1 repair done, that mazda covered... 1 side mirror motor blew and it did fold properly. Nothing else, put fuel in it and drive it hassle free ... just do the yearly checks and you will be fine for a long time.
@@nassernathanas far as reliability and everything I've read...... Getting a 2016 or 2017 Mazda CX-5, used, with 70,000 miles is essentially like getting a newer Ford Escape from 2021 or 2020 and with only 20,000 to 25,000 miles. That's how much better the Mazda engines are, as well as their life expectancy. Plus, I'd generally stay away from CVT engines and the whole EcoBoost and Turboboost crap. Just, many, many more problems with that. Also, make the sure the Mazda CX-5 is a 2.5L and not a 2.0 L. The 2.0L don't add enough oomph.
Also... Ford had still been adding components to these Mazda engines, up until about 2015 or 2016. I'd make sure to get a CX-5, that has no Ford components, whatsoever. It's kind of hard to research, though. I mean, there's some really good 2014 CX-5's out there--well priced, but I'm not sure if they have the Ford components or not. I'd probably spend a few thousand more and opt for a '16 or '17 CX-5 model, because I think in just those few years, there's been huge improvements with handing; noise reduction; shocks; overall drive--all that kind of stuff.
If anyone more knowledgeable wants to chime in, please do! I still have numerous unanswered questions on these statements, but this is kind of what I've come up with, from researching this quite a bit.

I put Continental tyres on my cx5 and the road noise difference was a huge improvement. I would compare it to a VWPassat which would be the benchmark in this category for road noise

One suggestion to everyone, since I had to replace the stock TOYO's with Pirelli Scorpion AS plus 3. I only gave up 5% of absolute sharpness of steering but what you gain is a very compliant tire. It grips better in the wet and very good longevity ( over 100000 km. ) compare to about only under 50000 km on the stock tires. The biggest improvement with Pirelli's is ride comfort and low noise (super smooth). I would consider next time when I buy another CX 5 I would change the tires right away and sell the new stock tires so I don't have to wait 4+ years until they wear. (owner of 2 different CX 5's) !
Ive been trying to pull the trigger on a used Med SUV to do some light camping with for a year now and this channel has just accelerated my knowledge so much. I've gone from wanting a Sportage > Forester > XTrail... but i think I'll now look for a 2019 CX5. Love that there is a Turbo option. Also the other cars don't get great used reviews post warranty period . THANK YOU SO MUCH! :)
Great video - and channel idea. I have a 2018 CX-5 GT and this video is spot on in all aspects. Reliable beast sprinkled with a touch of aesthetic elegance.
I've had a new CX-5 for 5 years and it has been a great car to drive and carry my bike. I have been looking to update and my gripe is that Mazda only put Daytime Running Lights on all their upper model variants. It will be 2022 soon so Mazda should put DRL on all their models, like all the other car brands.
Hold out 1-2 years, they’re entirely overhauling the CX-5 next year, a completely new generation. Probably following in the footsteps of the updated Mazda 3/CX-30 but applied to the 6 and CX-50, etc.
I drove a CX7 for 3 years. It had the turbo petrol engine. A nice car but very thirsty especially when towing. I brought a new CX5 GT 2.2 diesel turbo and I have had it now over 8 years with 120,000 kms. A perfect car with no issues and it uses 7.4l per hundred average. In my opinion the petrol motor is rubbish. Diesel is supreme especially if you tow.
It would also be worth making a difference between the model years - the older Diesel engines in the cx5 had problems but since 2019 I don’t think that is still the case…
We are looking at the CX-5, and there's one really important point (especially for a family car) that you need to take into consideration when buying used. In 2019, Mazda introduced the safety pack (lane departure warning, radar cruise control, autonomous emergency braking) as standard across the range. Beforehand, it was only standard on the top-line Akera. For mine, that means that it's worth stretching the extra couple of grand to get a 2019 CX-5 over the earlier versions. All it takes is one avoided head-on smash to pay itself back...
I forgot to add in my previous post that I had a problem with my CX-5 key fob. Quote from Mazda was an eye watering $701 for each fob and programming. An after market fob on EBay was $50 plus programming. In the end is was just a battery problem. Mazda price for headlight globe $45, Supercheap Auto $10, same globe. Spares and accessories are SO expensive from Mazda. Front and rear mudflaps from Mazda $460, Ebay $40.
I purchased a 2018 CX 5 GT a year and a half ago, based on a video from Redriven. I had spent some time in the hospital, and while getting better I researched used cars. I didn't look at domestic models as I had too many problems with them in the past. I had checked out Volvo, Audi, VW, Honda, Nissan, Lexus, etc, and all had a pretty large problem associated with each model I looked at. The only one I had not heard any complaints about was the CX 5. I have some disabilities still, and the safety features in this car are top notch. My favorite thing about it though is the headroom. I'm 6'3" tall and in 90% of past cars, my head was just touching the roof while driving, and when I came to a 4 way stop, I would have to duck my head down a bit because the rear view mirror would block my view to the right. Not in this car. Great visibility all around.
Diesel is a quite nice engine. Just do not forget to care about it with regular oil and filters changes and ofc do not forget sometimes put the pedal to the metal on highways and everything will be ok
I mean dude are we gonna take a face level “Diesel is nice” or trust the mechanic who has seen it all and says things still go wrong even with proper maintenance. You’d have problems if you don’t change the oil in the petrol too, but they said petrol is trouble free and diesel has issues so clearly it’s comparing two on equal maintenance standing.
@@User-cb4jm maybe the mechanic has a limited sample of data and doesn’t properly differentiate between different Diesel engines..? It’s well known that the older Diesel engine had problems but the newer one of 2019~ should be Problem free.
Lots of issues with the Diesel engines prior to 2018 I think, (do your research). I’m on the Facebook CX5 page and it’s mostly all bad with the diesels.
Upd here One of the biggest problems is made of steel rings nozzle seals. But nowadays they are changing to made of copper ones and that resolves most of the problems. Plus need to clean of soot intake and exhaust manifolds. Both procedures are well known to official maintenance stations, so just ask them about those rings. And if your car has steel ones, change them to copper ones p.s. have two cx5 in family, diesel and turbo, both are very nice p.p.s. Sorry for possible mistakes, English is not my native language
Mazda have been found guilty by ACCC of ‘unconscionable conduct and false or misleading representations’ particularly with the diesel motor in the CX5. Have consumers forgotten this? This is the main reason I would not consider a Mazda.
As a first time mazda owner I have to say they make some awesome cars. A little tid bit if your looking to buy a used Mazda....don't buy one made before 2016. Prior to 2015 Mazda was part owned by Ford. Meaning not all their cars were 100 percent made in Japan. Once they got rid of Ford their quality and reliability improved. Oh and for driving dynamics car drives like a BMW or Audi for almost half the price!
Had 626 from 80-280ks for 15yrs, fuel pump and windscreen washer were it for unexpected repairs. After >200k clutch hydraulics, AC refrigerate needed replenishing occasionally and leaky tappet gasket. None of which are unexpected on any car of this age even a toyota.
The Mazda CX5 is a brilliant SUV. It is as reliable as the best Lexus, has a clean, luxurious design, has excellent safety ratings, and handles and drives beautifully. Brilliant!

@@ReDriven I was seriously considering buying another Subaru- a XV but again based on your review i did not and thanks again for such a good review. Also your CX5 review stoped me from considering a diesel CX5 and was keen to have as sunroof and heated seats but not the diesel issues.
I've had my 2018 'Touring' petrol since new. The only problem has been the water ingress issue into the wing mirror, stopping it from folding in and out on locking. Both fixed, driver side within the first year and the passenger after it failed a month ago in 2024. Mazda covered both, no cost.
I've got a 2017 with 82000 miles. I've had two repairs (rear brakes and rotors, tensioner pulley) done under Carvana's base warranty, and I've had one $80 repair myself (blower motor, which is amazingly easy to access, btw), I've probably spent a further $900 on maintenance in the last 43,000 miles.
I just had one of these last week as a rental car in 2.5L touring spec. First thing I noticed about this car is the amazing job that Mazda did making this car simply feel far more expensive then it is. I own a Skoda Octavia RS245 as my daily and an 8V Audi S3 as my 'fun' car. Prior to that I owned a facelift Mercedes W204 C250, an Alfa Giuletta QV and a Lexus IS200. I'm used to driving prestige cars (primarily euro) with impressive levels of build quality, styling and refinement - and this CX5 did not disappoint in the slightest. The exterior is stylish, the doors open and close with a very solid feel, and - no exhageration - the interior feels right up there with my Audi as far as ergonomics, build quality and just feeling special. From sitting inside this alone you could tell me this was an $80,000 car and I wouldn't be the least bit surpised or disappointed...it's really that good. Where the Mazda exceeds every one of those prior cars I've owned is in the areas of rattles and ride comfort. Even the harshest speed humps feel tolerable in this car, and minor bumps you barely feel or see at all - and the rattles and creaks which were present on all the prio cars I've owned) are non-existent. Now, on to the areas that left me a little less impressed. The first one is stability/handling/body control. I'm a little shocked that all the reviews comment on the impressive sportiness of the CX-5 because the first thing I noticed is just how floaty and unsettled it felt at freeway speeds. When moving at anything >80kmh if you attempt anythign resembling a quick direction change you are met with quite aggressive pitching and rolling and a feeling of instability that I personally found highly unsettling. So much so that I actually thougth this car must weigh somewhere in the 1900-2000kg range and was utterly shocked whe I checked the specs and saw that it was only around 1650kg. I dont usually drive SUV's so I inittially put this down to maybe me just not being used to taller cars - but then I remembered that I had an Audi Q5 as a loan car a few years back, test drove an SQ5 diesel when I bought my S3, and also had a Hyundai Santa Fe hire car about 6 months back - and none of those other cars ever left me feeling unsafe due to excessive rolling/instability. All I can think of is that maybe the hire car company fitted some cheap-ass tyres to the car that had really soft, squishy sidewalls? The second is the engine/gearbox performance. I'm not sure how anybody can say this car performs strongly or that it 'sounds good'. At least not in standard mode, where the gearbox is extremely resistant to down-shifting. When you want to accelerate somewhat rapidly you put your foot down and nothing happens. Then you put it down more, and nothing happens. Then you putit down more and the gearbox then seems to overract by dropping multiple gears, causing you to go from 2,000 RPM to 6,000 RPM almost instantly, leaving you with the sound of a straining engine that sounds like it's about to eject a piston rod. Thankfully there is a workaroud for this - put the car in sports mode and the gearbox then drops gears appropriately quickly and leaves the car actually feels fairly responsive. The third is the braking. There was one time where a car jumped in front of me at short notice and I had to jump on the brakes - I applied what felt like it should have been reasonable pressure for the situation, and the car just was not stopping...eventually the emergency braking kicked in and pretty much slammed the brake on. A second time I was driving in an unfamiliar area and had to qjuickly slow down from 70 to take a turn, and even braking quite hard I just barely got down to a safe enough speed in time to take the turn. For such a new car those brakes were NOT confidence inspiring. Despite these criticisms I did walk away feeling very positive about the car overall and would give it about a 7/10 overall. I would very seriously consider buying one *if* I could find a way to improve the braking performance and make the car feel less floaty (which would also push the score up to more like an 8.5/10).
I bought a 2nd hand very low klm 2018 2.5lt AWD GT. First thing to do was a ceramic coating as the paint is very thin on the Mazda. Also those tyres had to go, a new set of Falkens on each corner. The heads-up display is amazing and the Bose sound system is fantastic. The car likes a drink and I find myself at the servo more then the focus I traded for it. I really like to drive this car, it still brings a smile 👍👍
I have a 2nd hand 2015 CX5, and also surprised how many stone chips it has on the bonnet and the roof. I'm now considering having to re-paint the car, in particular the roof, as some minor chips are starting to rust badly.... Great car overall, but the paint seems quite poor.
@@peters5692if it has chips on the roof it’s obviously been driven a lot on bad roads. More the fault of the roads than the car. But yes it’s not exactly Lexus paint thickness.
My auto CX-9 is coming up to ten years old (2012) and 190K. Maintenance is minimal. I fitted blu-tooth through the aux input and a widget. I will get another five yrs before I go electric.
My 2014 CX-5 with the 2.5L petrol engine and 6spd auto is about to hit 160k km...still going strong and has been very reliable. My only real complaints are the poor towing capacity and there are now some squeaks/rattles from the center console area. Otherwise I have nothing but good things to say.
Mazda CX-5 is the best. Have 2 now, plus 2 given to daughters. Have had 8 MAzdas since 2004. Every time I researched thoroughly before buying (I am a CPA). Only bought because Mazda was always the best.
I had those two cars in mind as well, but I definitely did not want to deal with cvt transmission. Rav4 pricing has gone crazy, which left only the Mazda as the best option for me.
My wife has a 2016 cx5 GX awd. She loves it, it’s nice and quiet, a lot more quieter than my 2015 mazda3. I’m actually looking at getting a 2018 or 2019 cx5 gt in a year or so.
I got a 2016 cx5 gt. Came from audi. Wanted lower maintenance costs and payments with higher reliability. I'm not disapointed. It will never be audi's awd but its luxurious enough that it still feels premium. Plus my wallet thanks me.

CX-5 has been advertised as quiet car, but you stated that it has some road noise. Could you add noise level measurement to your tests? Decibel meter and same speed on every car something like 80-100 km/h (50-60 mph). Maybe on same piece of road to keep it kinda consistent. It has other factors, tires etc. but just to get some reference. I have had noisy cars and they suck, road noise level is number one factor for me when choosing a car and it is merely mensioned on car tests. Awesome channel, not many tests used cars! Thanks!
The CX5 is arguebly the best package in the mid SUV class, but like other Mazdas it has one big flaw, its interior and boot space is the smallest in its class. Especially for a average family of 4 with the occasional guest, the rear leg was tight and the front space felt small. My final choice was between a CX5 Turbo Akera vs Tiguan Allpsace R Line and went with the later for that reason
My two teenage granddaughters had plenty of room in the rear seat, and there is plenty of room for their grandma and grandpa in the two front seats. The average guy is about 5' 8", and the average woman is about 5' 2", according to statistics, which Grandma and Grandpa are, and having an occasional teenage guest in the rear seat wouldn't be a problem, either.
@@Pyreing The only vehicles of any type that can seat 5 in *true* comfort are limos or full size SUV's. I laugh when I see compact cars or even mid sized crossovers touted as "5 seaters"...thats only in a pinch, and only with humans on the smaller side.
Lover this channel! I have just bought the brand new 2021 CX5 Akera Diesel. I have owned a 2016 Mazda 3 XD Astina with the same 2.2L Diesel engine for 5 years and put over 100,000Kms on it. There has been no major issues with the engine since get it serviced on time, which is why I bought the diesel CX5 again. Mazda’s diesel engine has less problems compared with my sold 2014 Audi SQ5 diesel engine that I owned for 3 years and sold it once warranty ran out.
@@davidperry3531 thanks for the reminder. I keep cars within warranty period most of the time with me and l don’t plan to keep it more than 5 years. So any issues covered under warranty won’t bother me too much. The new coming CX60 already attracts me a lot so I might even consider trading the Cx5 for the CX60 so I still keep at least one SUV in my garage.

One thing that goes wrong with ALL mazda CX5 is that the power folding mirrors give out and either dont fold or barley. But it’s completely free to get fixed
I purchased mine sight-unseen with 15k on the clock and have since put 20k on it, mainly across continental Europe. In that time it's seen fast highways in the summer and snow-covered roads in the Pyrenees in the winter, and lots of around-town driving. I have the top-spec (for Europe...) 2.5L automatic AWD and it has always felt sufficiently zippy and secure. Mine is the 2022 model, so has 360 camera views which really help in tight underground parking spots, and it has the larger infotainment screen and better image quality. The only downside for me is the lack of a touch screen, as the rotary input takes much, much, much longer to achieve what touchscreen inputs can accomplish in seconds. In the winter the heated seats take too long to warm up (sometimes heat is not felt for 3 or 4 minutes) but are toasty when they do finally wake up. The cooling - great in summer - is nearly instantaneous. And it's great to have the rear seats heated as well (oddly the rear seat heating activates much faster than in the front seats). The only minor bug is that when the weather is inclement (icy, or very wet) the camera system and warning systems disconnect, leaving the driver blind aside from what is visible through the glass. A very odd quirk.
Good to know how the CX-5 holds up! Now if I can only get hubby to see if he fits in the cargo area when we look a CX-5 at the dealership *LOL* (kidding aside, it was a smart visual to show what the area can hold). Great review!

they finally fixed the road noise in 2022 model. Just test driven GT SP Turbo model. What a bucket load of low end torque coupled with absolute silence in the cabin. Although, the suspension is still pretty stiff for my liking. And steering is a bit too heavy, though very precise. Overall, very fun to drive around and should be considered over cheap ass Korean cars.

The 2 liter Sky active petrol is on the most mass produced engines in the World. You won't get a powerful Car but should be reliable. Don't forget clean oil as the Skyactive runs a compression like a turbo.
Great vid! At the moment I'm on the market looking for some reliable car from this category and it really got me thinking about adding CX-5 to my list of interesting vehicles. But after reading reports and mazda forums I'm really scared of how much and how fast these cars rusts... I can see why it's not mentioned with Australias models, but the rest of us folks, that have snow and lots of salt at winter really need to take that into account. Seeing mid-europe models literally deteriorating after 4-5 years is heart- and deal-breaking, don't want my son to punch through car floor.
I still have my Mazda CX-5 2014 GS AWD and I have no problem recommending this car. The weak point on this car is the brakes , the solution, Install better quality disc and brake pads
How attractive: 1000. I own one of these and I LOVE IT more than ANY OTHER vehicle I have driven. I learned to drive in it and I have fallen in love with it. But the car is fun to drive, and has a FANTASTIC ride quality with high quality materials everywhere. The next car I get will probably be a Mazda. The best part about it though; SUPERB gas mileage with about 27 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. Would definitely recommend.
Looking at a 2021 CX-5 Grand Touring in California. Naturally aspirated 2.5 engine. Only have 10K miles on it for no more than a new sub-compact CUV like the Kia Seltos or Hyundai Kona ($29,995 USD). Plus its "certified" by Mazda (main thing is an extra year of warranty added on to the remaining factory warranty). Helpful video!

Sorry for the long post - have a lot of information to share :)
The point regarding DPF is understandable but this point really only applies to any diesel that is purchased by urban dwellers that don’t know better. Diesels must have their legs stretched. With the Skyactiv-D engines, this is stressed in the manual allowing for the DPF to burn off particulates. But many don’t leading to issues.
This is the single caveat. With this said, this diesel is a peach! I purchased the a CX-5 from the first Skyactiv-D CX-5 shipment back in early 2012 after spending a lot of time in Japan speaking with car nuts. It really is a diesel unlike anything on the market and really is the best engine in the CX-5 range (if the above caveat is taken seriously).
There are several reasons for this.
Firstly, the engine was borne out of numerous university studies into reduction of emissions through low compress (diesels are usually high compression). Mazda was the first and only car manufacturer to attempt a low compression diesel. The Skyactiv-D engine is still the only low compression diesel on the market having a compression ratio of 14:1 rather than the 16:1 to 18:1 of other diesels. The only negative of this is cold temperate startup, which is resolved by exhaust recirculation on startup (a reason the engine is noisy when warming up). But the positives far outweigh this single negative.
Positive 1: Being low compression for a diesel means that the engine can be built out of lighter component reducing weight.
Positive 2: The engine has a broader rpm range sitting halfway between a typical petrol and diesel - this reduces vibration and noise. It’s certainly a diesel, but at 14:1 it loses the agricultural sounds of something like a Tiguan diesel.
Positive 3: Emissions are lower than other diesels. This one is interesting, because when it was released, it passed Euro V easily but more work was needed for Euro VI and Mazda had a 6 year program to detune engine for EPA (US) during which period, VW was sending EPA approved engines to the US (as we know, using a dyno cheat to get this certification).
What did come out of that was that both the German and Japanese governments audited their local manufacturers Diesel engines. Germany did not release results, but it’s well known all manufacturers were exceeding emissions (i.e. cheating). Meanwhile, Japan did release results and the Skyactiv-D was the only engine that did on the road, what they published (meaning that Mazda was being honest, and a reason for example they refused to export to the US until they did have an engine capable of EPA).

One great Indicator of reliability was the AutoBild Dautertest (endurance test) done on a Skyactiv-D diesel powered CX-5. This is a German test where the car is run normally up to 100,000km to find faults then stripped down to every last nut and bolt looking for wear and tear. They applauded the vehicle and engine stating that Audi for example should take note. The engine at 100,000km appear to have barely 50,000km wear.

This is major praise given AutoBild's Dautest is known through the industry as among the hardest showing flaws in every vehicle they test (Mazda is one of the few brands to have a couple of faultless tests through their 20 years of doing them)
Other highlights were that Mazda has a policy of engineering where necessarily and keeping things straightforward where reliability is important. The auto transmission in the Mazda’s of late (Skyactiv-Drive) is superb!! It’s a torque convertor with slight change to the way the clutch plate work (almost locked up the entire time). This is noticeable in it’s use, and of note, many of the US car reviewers (such as Savagegeese and Car Care Nut Remix) that are very technical, go as far as to say hands down, this is the best auto transmission on any mainstream vehicle - and every one of them have said it’s so good, they completely overlook the fact it has 6 gears.
I now have two Skyactiv-D Mazda’s (CX-5 and CX-8). They’re fun to drive, and superbly reliable when driven properly. Love the engine and the transmission. Quality and reliability are top notch.
Thank you for this! I become hesitant in getting the diesel version of this car after it was mentioned in this video to avoid them and opt for gas instead. This at least put me at some ease :)

One bonus with the petrol (Skyactiv-G) version in Australia at least is that Mazda Australia is migrating to an annual/15k service schedule, and reducing the price on these services.
Great this about this is that when servicing schedules change, Mazda Australia is quick to apply this to all vehicles of the same make, and details must stick to the very clear and advertised fixed servicing pricing.
Mazda Australia is very proactive with keeping service centres monitored to ensure that servicing is not only to a high standard, but customer service is as well.
It's the way that Mazda has become not only one of the most trusted brands in Australia (leading to return sales), but one of the most trusted brands in Australia.
Diesels will maintain the 10k service schedule. They're far more sensitive to regular oil changes (particularly with the fact that most Mazda diesels are city vehicles lacking a stretch of the legs).

Japanese companies tend to be very conservative with their servicing.
It’s ironic though because mechanically many of the decisions Japanese companies make with the functional parts of the car are often demonstrably more reliable than similar parts on European cars. Euro brands will often go the route of trying something new out only to find sometimes the new route is great, and sometimes the new thing proves to be a reliability liability.
The MX-5 though is a super interesting car to use as an example. Mazda over engineered and over specified many components on the MX-5 mainly because they know that a very small subset of them are track cars. Regular consumers see the benefit of this in extreme reliability.
So what you have in the MX-5 is a car that could easily handle long service intervals, but a car company that would rather you show up often than get a fault.
(Sorry thought you wrote MX-5 only to facepalm knowing they don’t turbo those…. But yes Cx-5 turbo will be 10k)

Recently upgraded my CX5 Diesel to a CX60 Diesel, 95000K's I had zero issues with the CX5, I expect the same with the CX60.
I’m so grateful that Mazda exists. It’s as reliable as Toyota, but feels far more premium and fun to drive for the same money, and as the old adage goes feels like you’re getting a vehicle and not an appliance. Toyota would gladly upsell you into a Lexus if you were after something premium.

Bought a 2019 CX-5 in July at the advice of our Grandson and absolutely love it. Handles really well. Had to get use to all the bells and wistles. Love the automatic headlights and cruise .
An Aussie here. Bought a CX-5 GT in Soul Red Metallic back in 2018 brand new after much research. One of the few Japanese manufacturers to use a torque converter and not a cvt gearbox, which was an advantage. Nice blend of luxury interior. Had the recall to fix the software controlling the cylinder deactivation, two leaking rear shocks replaced during a service, and had the motorised wing mirrors fail too possibly due to water ingress all replaced under warranty. I experienced the flaky paint where it chipped off and never thought Mazda would do anything about it. I contacted Mazda who did an inspection and agreed to a full respray. Kudos to Mazda. I will definitely consider the brand for another car.
And even then your experience is probably the worst it gets for a reliable mainstream Japanese car like this bar a very rare few lemons I’d guess. Compared to Euro car where the worst it gets is the car being totally undriveable and the repair bill isn’t picked up by the manufacturer. 90% of Mazdas probably wouldn’t have even had the leaky shocks or mirror motors die, your experience is probably in the minority and even then you deemed it to be a minor issue fixed quickly without much fuss.
That's a massive number of things to go poopy in their trousers in just 3 years, from what you've said I'd never buy one used, but new... Maybe

Bought my first new car a 2017 Mazda CX-5 GT with sunroof, black leather seats (love the 10spk sound system) and towbar, doesn't need turbo, it's Soul Red fast and gorgeous. Great car for its class and price. I think I’ll hang on to this one for a while. Great review.

I'm in the US. I have a 2014 with 110k miles on it. I've done nothing to it other than oil, tires, brakes, and belts. It's the most reliable car I've ever owned. I recently have had an issue with the power seat. Not sure if I have something stick in the track or if the motor has gone bad. I'm taking it in soon to find out.

@@gkcarpenter98 Over 130k miles now.. Seat issue was a frayed cable. Mazda wanted to charge me $900 for a new seat. I fixed it myself with a $3 part from Home Depot. kind of a pain because I removed the seat to get to it, but relatively easy fix with RUclips guidance. I did have to get some other work done last year that cost me over $1k (tie rod ends, I forget what else, etc., etc.) Overall still the best car I've owned and still going strong. I think I need a trans fluid flush soon.

Sounds pretty good but power seat sounds early, have a toyota camery 2001 sle v6 convertible, power seats still good, 188, 000 miles....wish the new rav 4s were as good as 2017 etc.
Bought a 2016 CX-5 Touring edition and love it! Love the way it handles especially. Only trouble we've had after 100,000 miles is one defective headlight, which Mazda replaced at no costs, and two broken rear coil springs.

I also got a used cx5 2016 model GS...Superb performance. fast, fun to drive, gas efficient, handling is good. the only thing i dont like is the sporty shock absorber, too bumpy. its a reliable car, very comparable to Toyota standards. The only issue I have is the front wheel bearing needs to be replaced. It got damaged due to the nasty potholes here in Toronto.

There's a good reason why the CX5 is so popular - quality throughout. Have a 2015 KE Grand Touring 2.2lt TD with 180000km. It'll tow my 4m tinny on 1000km trips no problems, seats 4 adults comfortably and has all the features one would need. You get out of the car after long drives feeling very good, not drained. I'll drive it until it dies, then look at another one...
No issues at all with engine oil level rising / carbon build up / blockages? Which can destroy engine in the matter of minutes when it happens.
Mine is at 140k (bought at 135k) and found now that this is a common problem with their diesels. Lucky I could stop immediately and only cooping a $3k bill.
Now looking at selling and buying a Petrol version.
Your experience echos Autobild's endurance testing in Germany (which does a rapid 100,000km and then checks every part down to bolts for wear and tear).
The very experience Germany option (translated):
"Conclusion: Mazda can pat itself on the back. With no defects worth mentioning and with flawless workshop performance, the grade 1 shines in the final certificate"
This is for the 2017 CX-5, but the original was so good that it almost became of of the few fault free cars (and in a couple of decades of this German magazine testing cars, Mazda still holds record for most number of flawless cars).

It's a 194hp non turbo one, it get going not to bad and we average 9l on 100km on it, in summer it's more like 8,5l/100km. Can't go wrong with mazda, i myself drive a mazda 6 2020 with also the 194 2.5l petrol (same engine). Rock solid cars, mine is at 75k km my girlfriends cx-5 at 40k km. Got just 1 repair done, that mazda covered... 1 side mirror motor blew and it did fold properly. Nothing else, put fuel in it and drive it hassle free ... just do the yearly checks and you will be fine for a long time.

Getting a 2016 or 2017 Mazda CX-5, used, with 70,000 miles is essentially like getting a newer Ford Escape from 2021 or 2020 and with only 20,000 to 25,000 miles.
That's how much better the Mazda engines are, as well as their life expectancy.
Plus, I'd generally stay away from CVT engines and the whole EcoBoost and Turboboost crap. Just, many, many more problems with that.
Also, make the sure the Mazda CX-5 is a 2.5L and not a 2.0 L. The 2.0L don't add enough oomph.
Also...
Ford had still been adding components to these Mazda engines, up until about 2015 or 2016.
I'd make sure to get a CX-5, that has no Ford components, whatsoever. It's kind of hard to research, though.
I mean, there's some really good 2014 CX-5's out there--well priced, but I'm not sure if they have the Ford components or not.
I'd probably spend a few thousand more and opt for a '16 or '17 CX-5 model, because I think in just those few years, there's been huge improvements with handing; noise reduction; shocks; overall drive--all that kind of stuff.

Bought a 2019 CX-5 2 months ago in this same machine gray color, it looks stunning and drives fantastic. Very happy with it.
I put Continental tyres on my cx5 and the road noise difference was a huge improvement. I would compare it to a VWPassat which would be the benchmark in this category for road noise

One suggestion to everyone, since I had to replace the stock TOYO's with Pirelli Scorpion AS plus 3. I only gave up 5% of absolute sharpness of steering but what you gain is a very compliant tire. It grips better in the wet and very good longevity ( over 100000 km. ) compare to about only under 50000 km on the stock tires. The biggest improvement with Pirelli's is ride comfort and low noise (super smooth). I would consider next time when I buy another CX 5 I would change the tires right away and sell the new stock tires so I don't have to wait 4+ years until they wear. (owner of 2 different CX 5's) !

Ive been trying to pull the trigger on a used Med SUV to do some light camping with for a year now and this channel has just accelerated my knowledge so much. I've gone from wanting a Sportage > Forester > XTrail... but i think I'll now look for a 2019 CX5. Love that there is a Turbo option. I've had a new CX-5 for 5 years and it has been a great car to drive and carry my bike. I have been looking to update and my gripe is that Mazda only put Daytime Running Lights on all their upper model variants. It will be 2022 soon so Mazda should put DRL on all their models, like all the other car brands.
Hold out 1-2 years, they’re entirely overhauling the CX-5 next year, a completely new generation. Probably following in the footsteps of the updated Mazda 3/CX-30 but applied to the 6 and CX-50, etc.

I drove a CX7 for 3 years. It had the turbo petrol engine. A nice car but very thirsty especially when towing.
I brought a new CX5 GT 2.2 diesel turbo and I have had it now over 8 years with 120,000 kms.
A perfect car with no issues and it uses 7.4l per hundred average.
In my opinion the petrol motor is rubbish. Diesel is supreme especially if you tow.
Yes I wouldn’t say that diesel is bad I don’t believe one guy from one garage who just had a bad luck servicing more diesels.
It would also be worth making a difference between the model years - the older Diesel engines in the cx5 had problems but since 2019 I don’t think that is still the case…
We are looking at the CX-5, and there's one really important point (especially for a family car) that you need to take into consideration when buying used.
In 2019, Mazda introduced the safety pack (lane departure warning, radar cruise control, autonomous emergency braking) as standard across the range. Beforehand, it was only standard on the top-line Akera.
For mine, that means that it's worth stretching the extra couple of grand to get a 2019 CX-5 over the earlier versions. All it takes is one avoided head-on smash to pay itself back...
Or get an older one with Akera
I forgot to add in my previous post that I had a problem with my CX-5 key fob. Quote from Mazda was an eye watering $701 for each fob and programming. An after market fob on EBay was $50 plus programming. In the end is was just a battery problem. Mazda price for headlight globe $45, Supercheap Auto $10, same globe. Spares and accessories are SO expensive from Mazda. Front and rear mudflaps from Mazda $460, Ebay $40.
All brands are the same. Toyota wanted $750 for a digital clock in the dash on a Hiace.
I bought brand new CX5 in 2013 still got it never ever had any problems just wear and tear tyres brakes and service it’s still like new.
How long do you think it can last if well taken care of?
I purchased a 2018 CX 5 GT a year and a half ago, based on a video from Redriven. I had spent some time in the hospital, and while getting better I researched used cars. I didn't look at domestic models as I had too many problems with them in the past. I had checked out Volvo, Audi, VW, Honda, Nissan, Lexus, etc, and all had a pretty large problem associated with each model I looked at. The only one I had not heard any complaints about was the CX 5. I have some disabilities still, and the safety features in this car are top notch. My favorite thing about it though is the headroom. I'm 6'3" tall and in 90% of past cars, my head was just touching the roof while driving, and when I came to a 4 way stop, I would have to duck my head down a bit because the rear view mirror would block my view to the right. Not in this car. Great visibility all around.
Diesel is a quite nice engine. Just do not forget to care about it with regular oil and filters changes and ofc do not forget sometimes put the pedal to the metal on highways and everything will be ok
I mean dude are we gonna take a face level “Diesel is nice” or trust the mechanic who has seen it all and says things still go wrong even with proper maintenance. You’d have problems if you don’t change the oil in the petrol too, but they said petrol is trouble free and diesel has issues so clearly it’s comparing two on equal maintenance standing.
@@User-cb4jm maybe the mechanic has a limited sample of data and doesn’t properly differentiate between different Diesel engines..? It’s well known that the older Diesel engine had problems but the newer one of 2019~ should be Problem free.
Lots of issues with the Diesel engines prior to 2018 I think, (do your research). I’m on the Facebook CX5 page and it’s mostly all bad with the diesels.

One of the biggest problems is made of steel rings nozzle seals. But nowadays they are changing to made of copper ones and that resolves most of the problems. Plus need to clean of soot intake and exhaust manifolds. Both procedures are well known to official maintenance stations, so just ask them about those rings. And if your car has steel ones, change them to copper ones

Mazda have been found guilty by ACCC of ‘unconscionable conduct and false or misleading representations’ particularly with the diesel motor in the CX5. Have consumers forgotten this? This is the main reason I would not consider a Mazda.
As a first time mazda owner I have to say they make some awesome cars. A little tid bit if your looking to buy a used Mazda....don't buy one made before 2016. Prior to 2015 Mazda was part owned by Ford. Meaning not all their cars were 100 percent made in Japan. Once they got rid of Ford their quality and reliability improved. Oh and for driving dynamics car drives like a BMW or Audi for almost half the price!
Had 626 from 80-280ks for 15yrs, fuel pump and windscreen washer were it for unexpected repairs. After >200k clutch hydraulics, AC refrigerate needed replenishing occasionally and leaky tappet gasket. None of which are unexpected on any car of this age even a toyota.
I have a 2014 cx5 and it's made in Japan. Rock solid at 158k miles.
The Mazda CX5 is a brilliant SUV. It is as reliable as the best Lexus, has a clean, luxurious design, has excellent safety ratings, and handles and drives beautifully. Brilliant!

I did too, but chose a 2015 model as it's much cheaper :-)
I've had my 2018 'Touring' petrol since new. The only problem has been the water ingress issue into the wing mirror, stopping it from folding in and out on locking. Both fixed, driver side within the first year and the passenger after it failed a month ago in 2024. Mazda covered both, no cost.
I've got a 2017 with 82000 miles. I've had two repairs (rear brakes and rotors, tensioner pulley) done under Carvana's base warranty, and I've had one $80 repair myself (blower motor, which is amazingly easy to access, btw), I've probably spent a further $900 on maintenance in the last 43,000 miles.
I just had one of these last week as a rental car in 2.5L touring spec.
First thing I noticed about this car is the amazing job that Mazda did making this car simply feel far more expensive then it is.
I own a Skoda Octavia RS245 as my daily and an 8V Audi S3 as my 'fun' car. Prior to that I owned a facelift Mercedes W204 C250, an Alfa Giuletta QV and a Lexus IS200. I'm used to driving prestige cars (primarily euro) with impressive levels of build quality, styling and refinement - and this CX5 did not disappoint in the slightest. The exterior is stylish, the doors open and close with a very solid feel, and - no exhageration - the interior feels right up there with my Audi as far as ergonomics, build quality and just feeling special. From sitting inside this alone you could tell me this was an $80,000 car and I wouldn't be the least bit surpised or disappointed...it's really that good.
Where the Mazda exceeds every one of those prior cars I've owned is in the areas of rattles and ride comfort. Even the harshest speed humps feel tolerable in this car, and minor bumps you barely feel or see at all - and the rattles and creaks which were present on all the prio cars I've owned) are non-existent.
Now, on to the areas that left me a little less impressed.
The first one is stability/handling/body control. I'm a little shocked that all the reviews comment on the impressive sportiness of the CX-5 because the first thing I noticed is just how floaty and unsettled it felt at freeway speeds. When moving at anything >80kmh if you attempt anythign resembling a quick direction change you are met with quite aggressive pitching and rolling and a feeling of instability that I personally found highly unsettling. So much so that I actually thougth this car must weigh somewhere in the 1900-2000kg range and was utterly shocked whe I checked the specs and saw that it was only around 1650kg. I dont usually drive SUV's so I inittially put this down to maybe me just not being used to taller cars - but then I remembered that I had an Audi Q5 as a loan car a few years back, test drove an SQ5 diesel when I bought my S3, and also had a Hyundai Santa Fe hire car about 6 months back - and none of those other cars ever left me feeling unsafe due to excessive rolling/instability. All I can think of is that maybe the hire car company fitted some cheap-ass tyres to the car that had really soft, squishy sidewalls?
The second is the engine/gearbox performance. I'm not sure how anybody can say this car performs strongly or that it 'sounds good'. At least not in standard mode, where the gearbox is extremely resistant to down-shifting. When you want to accelerate somewhat rapidly you put your foot down and nothing happens. Then you put it down more, and nothing happens. Then you putit down more and the gearbox then seems to overract by dropping multiple gears, causing you to go from 2,000 RPM to 6,000 RPM almost instantly, leaving you with the sound of a straining engine that sounds like it's about to eject a piston rod. Thankfully there is a workaroud for this - put the car in sports mode and the gearbox then drops gears appropriately quickly and leaves the car actually feels fairly responsive.
The third is the braking. There was one time where a car jumped in front of me at short notice and I had to jump on the brakes - I applied what felt like it should have been reasonable pressure for the situation, and the car just was not stopping...eventually the emergency braking kicked in and pretty much slammed the brake on. A second time I was driving in an unfamiliar area and had to qjuickly slow down from 70 to take a turn, and even braking quite hard I just barely got down to a safe enough speed in time to take the turn. For such a new car those brakes were NOT confidence inspiring.
Despite these criticisms I did walk away feeling very positive about the car overall and would give it about a 7/10 overall. I would very seriously consider buying one *if* I could find a way to improve the braking performance and make the car feel less floaty (which would also push the score up to more like an 8.5/10).
I bought a 2nd hand very low klm 2018 2.5lt AWD GT. First thing to do was a ceramic coating as the paint is very thin on the Mazda. Also those tyres had to go, a new set of Falkens on each corner.
The heads-up display is amazing and the Bose sound system is fantastic.
The car likes a drink and I find myself at the servo more then the focus I traded for it.
I really like to drive this car, it still brings a smile 👍👍
I have a 2nd hand 2015 CX5, and also surprised how many stone chips it has on the bonnet and the roof. I'm now considering having to re-paint the car, in particular the roof, as some minor chips are starting to rust badly.... Great car overall, but the paint seems quite poor.
@@peters5692if it has chips on the roof it’s obviously been driven a lot on bad roads. More the fault of the roads than the car. But yes it’s not exactly Lexus paint thickness.

My auto CX-9 is coming up to ten years old (2012) and 190K. Maintenance is minimal. I fitted blu-tooth through the aux input and a widget. I will get another five yrs before I go electric.

My 2014 CX-5 with the 2.5L petrol engine and 6spd auto is about to hit 160k km...still going strong and has been very reliable. My only real complaints are the poor towing capacity and there are now some squeaks/rattles from the center console area. Otherwise I have nothing but good things to say.
Mazda CX-5 is the best. Have 2 now, plus 2 given to daughters. Have had 8 MAzdas since 2004. Every time I researched thoroughly before buying (I am a CPA). Only bought because Mazda was always the best.

I had those two cars in mind as well, but I definitely did not want to deal with cvt transmission. Rav4 pricing has gone crazy, which left only the Mazda as the best option for me.

My wife has a 2016 cx5 GX awd. She loves it, it’s nice and quiet, a lot more quieter than my 2015 mazda3. I’m actually looking at getting a 2018 or 2019 cx5 gt in a year or so.
Yep I agree, I tested both the 3 and the CX5 and really felt the Mazda 3 being pretty noisy. I'm now the owner of a secondhand 2015 CX5 2.0.
I got a 2016 cx5 gt. Came from audi. Wanted lower maintenance costs and payments with higher reliability. I'm not disapointed. It will never be audi's awd but its luxurious enough that it still feels premium. Plus my wallet thanks me.

CX-5 has been advertised as quiet car, but you stated that it has some road noise. Could you add noise level measurement to your tests? Decibel meter and same speed on every car something like 80-100 km/h (50-60 mph). Maybe on same piece of road to keep it kinda consistent. It has other factors, tires etc. but just to get some reference.
I have had noisy cars and they suck, road noise level is number one factor for me when choosing a car and it is merely mensioned on car tests.

The CX5 is arguebly the best package in the mid SUV class, but like other Mazdas it has one big flaw, its interior and boot space is the smallest in its class. Especially for a average family of 4 with the occasional guest, the rear leg was tight and the front space felt small. My final choice was between a CX5 Turbo Akera vs Tiguan Allpsace R Line and went with the later for that reason
My two teenage granddaughters had plenty of room in the rear seat, and there is plenty of room for their grandma and grandpa in the two front seats. The average guy is about 5' 8", and the average woman is about 5' 2", according to statistics, which Grandma and Grandpa are, and having an occasional teenage guest in the rear seat wouldn't be a problem, either.

@@Pyreing The only vehicles of any type that can seat 5 in *true* comfort are limos or full size SUV's. I laugh when I see compact cars or even mid sized crossovers touted as "5 seaters"...thats only in a pinch, and only with humans on the smaller side.

Lover this channel! I have just bought the brand new 2021 CX5 Akera Diesel. I have owned a 2016 Mazda 3 XD Astina with the same 2.2L Diesel engine for 5 years and put over 100,000Kms on it. There has been no major issues with the engine since get it serviced on time, which is why I bought the diesel CX5 again. Mazda’s diesel engine has less problems compared with my sold 2014 Audi SQ5 diesel engine that I owned for 3 years and sold it once warranty ran out.

@@davidperry3531 thanks for the reminder. I keep cars within warranty period most of the time with me and l don’t plan to keep it more than 5 years. So any issues covered under warranty won’t bother me too much. The new coming CX60 already attracts me a lot so I might even consider trading the Cx5 for the CX60 so I still keep at least one SUV in my garage.

I have a 2020 grand tour model. Car is awesome. I like the sky feature when in traffic. The turbo kicks in nice when needed.

One thing that goes wrong with ALL mazda CX5 is that the power folding mirrors give out and either dont fold or barley. But it’s completely free to get fixed
That’s why I have them deactivated. I just fold them in when needed which is almost never.
My 1977 Ford Pinto still runs great. Original everything... including the transmission fluid.
Lol... this comes up in my feed, a day after I just picked up my used 2019 GT. Love it.
I purchased mine sight-unseen with 15k on the clock and have since put 20k on it, mainly across continental Europe. In that time it's seen fast highways in the summer and snow-covered roads in the Pyrenees in the winter, and lots of around-town driving. I have the top-spec (for Europe...) 2.5L automatic AWD and it has always felt sufficiently zippy and secure. Mine is the 2022 model, so has 360 camera views which really help in tight underground parking spots, and it has the larger infotainment screen and better image quality. The only downside for me is the lack of a touch screen, as the rotary input takes much, much, much longer to achieve what touchscreen inputs can accomplish in seconds. In the winter the heated seats take too long to warm up (sometimes heat is not felt for 3 or 4 minutes) but are toasty when they do finally wake up. The cooling - great in summer - is nearly instantaneous. And it's great to have the rear seats heated as well (oddly the rear seat heating activates much faster than in the front seats). The only minor bug is that when the weather is inclement (icy, or very wet) the camera system and warning systems disconnect, leaving the driver blind aside from what is visible through the glass. A very odd quirk.
So thankful mazda listens to what people want its about time car companys hear the people😊

they finally fixed the road noise in 2022 model. Just test driven GT SP Turbo model. What a bucket load of low end torque coupled with absolute silence in the cabin. Although, the suspension is still pretty stiff for my liking. And steering is a bit too heavy, though very precise. Overall, very fun to drive around and should be considered over cheap ass Korean cars.

I Absolutely Love My CX-5, It Has Plenty Of Room (Albeit For Someone Getting Out Of a MX-5ND), Love The Heated Seats, Replaced The Stock F/R and Center Channel Speakers With J.B.L.s, Added a 12" Rockford Fosgate Sub Powered By a JL Audio Amp with a Soundstream 1.5farad Capacitor, Replaced the Stock 18" Wheels With Konig 19x8" Wheels on P245 Tires - Handling Is So Much Better Now Over Those Narrow Stock P225s...

The 2 liter Sky active petrol is on the most mass produced engines in the World.
You won't get a powerful Car but should be reliable.
Don't forget clean oil as the Skyactive runs a compression like a turbo.

Great vid! At the moment I'm on the market looking for some reliable car from this category and it really got me thinking about adding CX-5 to my list of interesting vehicles. But after reading reports and mazda forums I'm really scared of how much and how fast these cars rusts... I can see why it's not mentioned with Australias models, but the rest of us folks, that have snow and lots of salt at winter really need to take that into account. Seeing mid-europe models literally deteriorating after 4-5 years is heart- and deal-breaking, don't want my son to punch through car floor.
I still have my Mazda CX-5 2014 GS AWD and I have no problem recommending this car. The weak point on this car is the brakes , the solution, Install better quality disc and brake pads
How attractive: 1000. I own one of these and I LOVE IT more than ANY OTHER vehicle I have driven. I learned to drive in it and I have fallen in love with it. But the car is fun to drive, and has a FANTASTIC ride quality with high quality materials everywhere. The next car I get will probably be a Mazda. The best part about it though; SUPERB gas mileage with about 27 mpg city and 31 mpg highway.
Would definitely recommend.
Looking at a 2021 CX-5 Grand Touring in California. Naturally aspirated 2.5 engine. Only have 10K miles on it for no more than a new sub-compact CUV like the Kia Seltos or Hyundai Kona ($29,995 USD). Plus its "certified" by Mazda (main thing is an extra year of warranty added on to the remaining factory warranty). Helpful video!
