The Mazda CX-5 is fun to drive.....paddle shifters....what like maybe 1 second faster and 20 more hp then the other two... Come on, it's a utility vehicle. We are talking about crossover suv's. If you are the type to try and drive a crossover like it's a sports car, your a D-bag. Or at least you're going to look like one. This review needs a review!

Been loving my CX5, it really is a wonderful car. The way it handles long bends and sharp turns, it's actually better than most mainstream sedans and is akin to, dare I say it - MX5. Considering the size of the car, the fact that it can just dart into long bends and kinda begs you to floor it out of the corner while keeping its composure, that's just fun.

We had a ‘21 RAV4 loaner a few weeks back and I rented a ‘22 CX5 this past weekend. Interior usability was fantastic on both, why more automakers can’t do this is beyond me. That said, the CX-5 absolutely blows it away in every way imaginable except overall interior space. The RAV4 was bloated, soft, and handled like my dads 1991 Dodge Ram…and it was just as loud on the inside. That CX5 was incredible though.

I test drove all three and went with the CRV. The lane keep is way more advanced than the others and we got a great deal on one. The interior of the rav4 was lacking in the power trims and the Mazda just doesn’t have the space (it felt small). Again, these cars are to go on long distance trips and grocery shopping.

  • @matthewlocke9225
    @matthewlocke9225 4 года назад +167

The CR-V is a realistic drivers car. It’s super comfortable even on long trips, the lane keep assist is basically auto pilot. It’s true about the engine having a bit of turbo lag but 80% of people live in cities where that will rarely matter, and this car handles traffic like a boss!

And that's my point - in overall Mazda has nothing special in design, for 6 it's well outdated. Actually 3 looks the same as previous gen, and cx5 is a little bit different in front (situation was the same with old Outlander, changed grille, headlights and called a new gen, XL, but basically it was the same model).
Actually I think the issue with Mazda is lack of money, they can't afford to change model line every 4 years and create a variety of models for every request. Not complaining, but for new it's matter of fact, they have a very narrow segment where they can't compete with major brands like VW (Tiguan), BMW (x3), Honda (CR-V), Toyota (RAV4) and, I think, even Ford has better chances with new Escape which is all-new). And I need to note that Ford looks very good IRL.

The CX-5 is very compelling (for the segment). Have been considering getting one but the competitor hybrids are so much more fuel efficient at around 6L/100km. That is a massive savings in fuel costs.
For "value", the Rav4 will likely have the best resale and reliability, but just get the hybrid. It's only a few grand more and has more power. The improved fuel economy alone will pay for the difference in a few years. The hybrid transmission is also reported to be more reliable than the non-hybrid.

Traded my my 17 CX-5, and 19 Fusion in. Test drove the the 22 CX-5, Rav-4, & the CR-V. I went with the CR-V. Liked the CR-Vs over the other 2 by far. But everyone is going to have their own needs and that is ultimately how people are going to have to decide. This is a good side by side video. Been in automotive as a tech since 1995, and my dealership is a Ford and Mazda dealer. I will say the 1.5 turbo CR-V has a lot more passing power than the 1.5 turbo Fusion, but the Mazda does out power the Honda. Steering in the Honda is by far better than the Mazda. Taking corners is a much smoother experience.

Test drove all of these quite a bit, and loved them all, and took some notes while at the dealerships (shared below). Ultimately the short answer is none of them are clear winners due to each offering different aspects that may appeal to you more/less.
CX5 - Outstanding looks, handling, options, but only comes in black trims mostly (the advertised other colors I was not able to find anywhere in my local region). I found the visibility to be just ok and felt a bit cramped in.
Rav4 - Best MPG, great looks. Cons: very flat driving experience, found it to feel much bigger than the other two (perceived size).
CRV - Felt sporty in sport mode, CVT is responsive, great looks. Cons: neither the best handling NOR best mpg, but a great mix of both. Can get other colors apart from black that is available in my area.
    All are awesome.

@@Fadic4 ....compared to everything in its class.
The CRV is severely underpowered compared to the RAV4 or CX5, and the performance data backs that up. Look at 0-60 and 1/4 mile times. While obviously none are fast, the CRV lags behind considerably.
As demonstrated in this video, the turbo lag from the 1.5 actually makes passing scary.
The 1.5 is also the least reliable engine here, as turbocharged Honda engines aren’t reliable.
Don’t even get me started on the CVT. Worst feeling ever when driving a car, kills the power, sounds absolutely horrid and feels so unnatural. CRV would be my last pick here by far.

The driving dynamics matter a bit, but it's the "livability" that matters with these practical vehicles. These cars are meant for every single day, doing all of your errands, taking trips, etc., and doing it with compete reliability. The RAV4 is the one I'd choose. Great driving feel, high quality of materials, very capable and great for long drives. The automatic transmission is miles ahead of the CVTs offered by the competition in terms of smoothness. Would definitely get another one when the time comes, but would opt for the 2.5L.
