This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new 2023 Mazda CX-50 compact crossover. There are two engine options, a 2.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder, a 6-speed automatic transmission, 256 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque on premium fuel and regular fuel, 227 horsepower & 310 lb-ft of torque. The base non-turbo engine has 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque, standard AWD on all trims. The CX-50 is a head-turner with its wide, bold stance, low roofline, dual-exhaust tips, rear roof spoiler and for the very first time, Mazda’s offering a panoramic sunroof. This crossover is designed to make your outdoor adventures as seamless as possible; the cargo floor fits coolers, packs and gear lengthwise, the liftgate opening is flush with the floor to make it easier to slide heavy items and the reinforced roofline is designed to support equipment such as kayaks, bikes and even a pop-up tent. In Canada, there are 3 trims and in the US 9 with a 4th and 10th trim on the way later this year called the Meridian Edition. The CX-50 comes with plenty of standard features in Canada like a 10.25” display with Mazda Connect, 8.8” in the US, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, leatherette trimmed upholstery, heated front seats, 10-way power driver seat, a heated steering wheel, Mazda harmonic acoustics audio system, a panoramic sunroof, power liftgate, 17” wheels, i-Activsense safety features and Mi-Drive with sport/off road modes. Other available features on higher trims include, a Bose sound system, front and rear parking sensors, navigation, a 360 monitor, wireless charger, a power passenger seat, leather seating surfaces, ventilated front seats and heated rear seats. The CX-50 starts at $37,900, GT $42,850 and GT Turbo $45,350 CAD. In the US, you have a more stripped down base model with a lower starting price of $26,800, S Select $28,200, Preferred $29,500, Preferred Plus $31,940, Premium $34,400, Premium Plus $36,400, Turbo $36,400, Turbo Premium $39,550 and Turbo Premium Plus $41,550. The CX-50 Turbo can tow 3500 pounds, we towed a 3200 pound Airstream at the launch of this Mazda crossover. The non-turbo engine can tow 2200 pounds. The CX-50 is the first Mazda built in the US at the Mazda/Toyota plant in Huntsville, Alabama. In Canada, it will be available at Mazda dealerships in May and in the US, at the end of this month. A Hybrid CX-50 will be coming as well, but Mazda did not confirm if it will arrive by the end of the year. In Canada, the base model for $37,900 CAD comes loaded with a 10.25” display, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, leatherette trimmed upholstery
heated front seats, a power driver seat, heated leather steering wheel, Mazda harmonic acoustics audio system, panoramic sunroof, a power liftgate and 17” wheels. The GT trim with a turbo or non-turbo engine option, comes with extra features like a power passenger seat, leather trimmed upholstery, Bose sound system, Navigation, 360 view monitor, a head-up display, front and rear parking sensors, a wireless phone charger ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and leather seating surfaces. GT $42,850 CAD and GT Turbo $45,350 CAD. In the US, you get a stripped down base model for $26,800 USD and it goes all the way up to $41,550 USD for the top turbo trim. Traded our 2017 cx5 for CX 50 this weekend. The new front grill looks fantastic. 2017 CX-5 went over 100,000 miles Zero check engine lights not even a light bulb failed
I just purchased this car yesterday. Was looking at CX-5, but then drove this. The seat position discussion at 7:45 was what changed my mind to the CX-50. Love the way this thing drives and handles.
Another excellent review from you guys, that Mazda CX-50 is killing it! Can't wait for the CX-90 to pop up 🥳
This has become my favorite Mazda. The CX-30 and CX-5 I drove during my recent car search. This model is right down the pike...stylish and capable. The size is perfect. I could do without the pano roof ...standard moon roof is just fine. I'm looking forward to seeing them on the road. Thanks for the review you guys are awesome.
Panoramic moonroof is part of the standard features of CX-50 in Canada.
All my 3 current vehicles have pono roof. I hardly use them, but two have leaks. One time we drove home from a trip and started to rain. The roof did not close and we got wet. But luckily, the bridge saved us from flooding the interior. I rather don't have it at all and save money on the option.
@@francisgallozzi2595 ....and here in the states as well. At the time of my initial comment that was not clear to me. The soon to come 'Meridian' should be very interesting.
@@slighwentwalking2024 You can only get the panoramic moonroof from 2.5 S Preferred Plus and higher in USA for CX-50.
Nice review. I'm glad that you pointed out the difference between volumetric versus usable cargo volume between the CX-5 and CX-50. I currently lease a 2020 CX-5 FWD Touring down here in Florida. One of the reasons I'm considering a 2023 CX-50 next year is its longer and wider cargo area.
I looked at this clip this morning and what you said about the car was spot on. I went to the dealership, drove one and leased it.
Love your reviews! I have had two CX-5s and now have a CX-30; the seats are way better in the 30 & 50 than the CX-5. When I switched to the CX-30, I couldn't believe at 6'3, I fit better in the CX-30, although I do hit my head sometimes getting in and out haha, so I will be most likely switching to the CX-50 in a couple years. One of my reasonings of staying with Mazda is their AWD system works so well, living in a snowy area with some rough dirt roads their AWD has gotten me through some sketchy conditions with ease.
Which year of CX5 are you comparing with the CX 50? Because from the year 2022, all front seats are fairly common between CX5 and CX50, with CX5 having an elevated thigh support and CX50 having a flat bottom.
@@ludwigtheholyblade79 I had a ‘13 & ‘20 CX-5, I’m comparing the ‘20, while very comfortable I could never adjust to get enough legroom but it never really bothered me. When I had to get another car (due to a deer) I was shocked at the difference of legroom I had being a smaller vehicle. It could be the difference in padding as you spoke of allowing me to stretch my legs lower. I did see one video from TFL Car on the CX-30 that explained the seats were designed emulate standing posture. When the CX-50 hit showroom floors I noticed the interiors were similar between the 30&50 and seat comfort of the 50 was closer to the 30 vs. the 5. Being 6’3”, broader shoulders and scoliosis I personally have a hard time with seating adjustments. Quick example I had to drive my friends ‘19 Grand Cherokee, even though I’m a huge fan of Jeeps, my back starting hurting only after 5miles of driving. Thankfully for Mazda I have zero pain even on longer road trips.
Another great review. CX-50 will be another SUV home run after CX-30. Can't wait for CX-70 and CX-90, especially PHEV which will enhance Mazda's dynamic image to another height.
I think Mazda has nailed it. It looks brilliant. Both this Mazda and the Subaru definitely hit a sweet spot in the market. I think its an absolutely fantastic looking (inside and out) product. Either one would look great in my driveway. Thanks for another great review.
Lmao please don’t compare this to the Subaru. Subaru has gone downhill, they have a huge identity crisis. They are an “enthusiast” brand trying too hard to appeal to the masses. Their CVT pretty much robs the vehicle of any driving pleasure. What’s the point of having a great engine when your transmission bottlenecks the feel and performance of the entire vehicle?
Buddy of mine just took delivery of his CX 50 yesterday. He literally test drove everything remotely in the perspective class and decided on the Mazda. He loves it.
As always, you guys nailed it. Best couple auto reviewers EVER!
They nailed it, but no one should ever say mAzda (a as used in ace) :D it just sounds so wrong.
I test-drove this vehicle yesterday and really wanted to like it. It addressed the few things that made me reject the CX-5, chiefly the amount of cargo space. But the seats were the deal-killer. I like a firm seat, but these were church-pew-hard. The ride was a bit rough and the cabin was not particularly quiet. A shame; I had hoped that it might be the one.
The CX-50 is the best looking CUV of all in my opinion. Cudos to Mazda for knocking it out of the park again.
I spoke with a Mazda mechanic and he told me there are problems with turbos across the brand. He said the four cylinder minus the turbo, is bullet proof.
Bull
I love Canadians man, they're so much nicer than Americans. Wouldn't mind moving there!
Till you see the prices!
I really like the mature and planted look of the CX-50, this would be my top pick from Mazda.
I test drove the new cx 50 last week and turned right around and brought it back to the dealer. I sat very low in the car even though the seat height was adjusted and the driver's window stopped very high. I felt as if I had been dropped in a box. I got the CX5 premium plus instead and picked it up a few days ago. I love it.
Thanks, we're looking at the CX-5 PP and this is a confirmation.
@Wikoli B I have had the cx5 for almost 5 months now. I smile every time I get in my car. I had ordered an audi q3 9 months before and when I found it was not coming for probably 6 more months I looked around. I am so happy with my decision to buy the cx5 and like it more than the audi! I think you will love it.
@@nancylide723 Thanks Nancy, appreciate your input.
@@nancylide723 I'll add that if you like your car, and you got a decent deal, you're good, as long as they didn't rip you off. I never take extended warranties or other adds.
Inversely, if you got a smokin' deal and don't like your car or got a lemon, it was a bad deal. I've learned to make sure as much as possible that the car you're buying is a good unit, and if it's a fair deal, you should be good.
I own 2 2022 Mazdas.
CX30 turbo and a 3 Sport (hatch). As I reside in Canada, we get the unlimited kilometres 3 year and 5 year powertrain warranties.
Who else does this at this price point?
If we needed the extra room the 50 would be very nice option. Since we don’t, we are extremely satisfied with our Mazdas.
Well done again Motormouth.
All new Mazda?! Andrea has to be loving it. My goodness this car checks all the boxes.
Bought a CX50 6 months ago but I got the pearl white but otndid not have turbo.. Love driving it and it handles very well
I've watched your channel enough over the years to value your well considered opinion. When I replace my 2013 Outback Limited I will shop the CX-50. Although I have learned to get the most out of the CVT, I still don't like it and Subaru's reliance on a screen for common controls is not as good as my 2013 with actual buttons.(I have tried a 2021 during a service stop) If a switch fails in my car I don't lose everything. Just my thoughts from an avid viewer.
If they would have kept the cx-5 height along with the cx-50 ground clearance, it would have been perfect.
Yea........Side window is TINY.............Paul
I agree with the CX5 height I would have bought the CX50 instead of the CX5
Nailed it
Totally agree! It should have been the same height as the CX5.
Love you guys. You have great energy and wonderful chemistry. Thanks for all the outstanding content!
Just picked up the 2024 CX-50 Premium. Very Pleased. It is solid and prefer the lower ride feeling. It has upgraded shocks and lighter steering compared to the 23' Model. Within 2 days, I found a coding bug. You can use the favorite button to add a radio station to favorites. Discovered you can add the same station multiple times. Ideally, should be limited to once. Also, instead of a delete a favorite screen action, it would be easier to hold down the favorite button to unfavorite a station, essentially a double click.
It is a VERY good looking behicle. Best looking Mazda. Saw one in the showroom today and it was nice. Did not drive it, was there for the CX-5 (yawn) but may consider this.
Superb, polished and professional review. Love the format. Subscribed. Seems like a great car. My wife wants one and I think we are about to pull the trigger on getting one. Thank you for the great review.
Finally a crossover that strikes a good balance in the stance of the vehicle. Width to height ratio is awesome while still having decent ground clearance
I think the CX-50 is a great looking vehicle, but it does not surprise me that some people don't like its looks. I mean some people even like the looks of Hondas. There is no accounting for taste. I just hope there is inventory for the CX-50 when my lease is up in May.
I bought a new 2021 Mazda CX-5. I believe the CX-50 has the same engine. It burns engine oil from day one. I looked up and found a bulletin for my car to be repaired. I took it in and they agreed that my car fell under that bulletin according to the VIN but, that I had to wait for the engine light to come on. By my calculation that won't happen until one oil change after my warranty is up. Don't take a chance and buy Mazdas. They don't stand by their product unlike Honda for instance. At the time I was shopping for my car, they had fuel dilution problems with some of their engines. Similar to my problem but worse. They put out a bulletin and fix it. Mazda will do whatever it takes to avoid paying to fix the problem, even when they themselves admit that there's a problem.
The 2021 Mazda 2,5 turbos are reported to have oil consumption issues due to redesigned valve seals. I would either stick to the naturally aspirated 2.5 or research and question thoroughly the '22 and '23 oil consumption stats on the turbo version.
@@wikolib6821 Great News. Mazda finally agreed to repair my car. I know it took some prodding but still you have to give them credit. I’m so happy I don’t know what to do with myself. They're going to replace the exhaust seals.
@@wikolib6821 Sorry they are going to replace the exhaust valve seals.
@@lgsprings5623 Glad they are taking care of you. Hopefully this solves the problem.
I REALLY like this new CX 50. Mazda has shed the image they had with the Protege and went premium and powerful. I drove the CX5 and the Miata at a test drive event and enjoyed them very much. This fits the bill for comfortable daily driver with easy entry/exit which I've come to appreciate when wearing bulky winter clothing.
I just checked it out in person. Looks great in polygraph metal. Seeing it in person it looks like they referenced the Rav 4. Looking forward to test driving it.
How can it be compared to RAV4? That car is "chiseled", as Andrea put it.
06:04 I actually would prefer 4 trims over the 9 that we'll get here, simplifies the decision making process. I would personally would like only 2 trims and have an a la carte options menu.
a la carte would be great. I want a Bose system, but could care less about heated seats or auto closing back.
@@PeteJake100 Unfortunately that will never happen as the manufacturers have figured out this money making formula so why would they go back.
We Canadians get less trim but more standard features and usually s better pricing strategy. I can do without the pano roof as well. I think Subaru nailed it with the wilderness trim in terms of amenities and capabilities. This looks sexier and undoubtedly more reliable with the CVT and sportier driving dynamics. I have the Onyx or Outdoor in Canada but I do not like the thirsty nature of the boxer architecture. If I can get of my lease, I’d get this for sure.
Loving the looks of the cx50, i like the wider body. Cant wait for the mazda-toyota hybrid venture in the next few years, babying my current vehicles to make it to then lols
Excellent and helpful review. Many reviewers will focus on minutiae that does not matter (ex. the placement of the middle vent). One month into owning the CX-50 Turbo (wife's car), it is a fun small SUV to drive. And the styling is class leading IMHO. Your review hit what buyer's want to know. Thx.
This is the coolest thing mazda has given us in years.
Too bad those of us in the right hand markets are not getting it.
And i wish it was available with a manual gearbox.
thank you for showing the vehicle with you standing next to it. i wasnt sure how big the cx-50 was
I am a big Mazda fan and if they offered a hybrid trim . I will get one next year.
Great review. I've seen the CX-50 on the lot and I just saw one in the wild on the local Walgreens parking lot with a lot of dirt on it, so the owner obviously lives off the paved road. This is a beautiful car, very well designed and engineered.
My wife is in a '22 Mazda 3 Premium which is a great sports sedan but I hit my head every time I get in it. Looking at the CX-5 and I'll have to demo it to see if would work for us.
If at all there is a plan for CX 90 which can look like a big brother to CX50, I am sold !
I tried it myself yesterday the CX 50 the shocks are a little stiff on the road could be better
This is nice looking vehicle. Interior is good. I wish touchscreen is front of dashboard not top of it so driver can reach for it. Awesome video Andrea! 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you, so glad you liked it. Really happy there is a panoramic sunroof now!
@@andreaspencer9813 You are an very welcome and same here. ☕️☕️
Gorgeous! Wow love the exterior color and design and the interior color! Sharp!
Just put down money to reserve the next CX-50 coming to my city. I can't wait!
Another very informative review! I just wish Mazda and Subaru would have more hybrid models like so many other auto companies are offering. With gas prices in Ca over $6 dollars/gal its very hard to justify buying a gas engine. But I guess when your car sales for both Mazda and Subaru are so good there isn't the urgency to add additional technologies.
I’ve seen some reports that mazda is expecting to launch a hybrid cx 50 at some point in the future!!
I hope Mazda finds a good way to make their hybrid models without a CVT. Given they are going to be borrowing some of their hybrid system from Toyota, I have my doubts. Maybe its just me, but I'd rather pay a little more for fuel than deal with a CVT.
@@realbigtuna667 Me too.........In fact, I traded My CVT Subie for a 6 speed CX30...........Paul
Yes Yes Yes! I was waiting for this review. Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
I'm looking to replace my 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan and this vehicle is at the top of my list of considerations. I sat in the CX-5 and I felt like I was sitting on a pile of rocks. Went to sit in the CX-50 and I felt like I was in heaven. The CX-50 is my style of vehicle.
How bad is the Tiguan?😅
@@seanjamesmacleod241 it was so bad that the car died at 9000kms. I was worried that because I was driving a lot, I didn’t want the risk of getting stuck somewhere so I had to get rid of it.
i gotta say, as a MAH-ZDA owner here in the U.S. (lol) that black gloss grill and vents pick up every dead bug carcass that sticks to it and that is all you see when you walk by the front of your car. looks good freshly washed but if you are a neat-freak it might drive you crazy...I just go "ugh" silently to myself as I walk by and shrug it off to all the miles I am putting on my car from LOVING to go on long weekend drives.
Looks like this is my next car after my current 2010 Mazda 3. I hope there will be a PHEV in Canada.
Beautiful looking suv, does base model have blind spot
We do a lot of golfing and usually carry my clubs all summer. My CX5 does not fit our clubs across the back will they fit in the CX50.
Great review and like this new Mazda cx 50. Being looking for a new SUV but hard to find. Zack said something on his talk last night so have a great day and enjoy because kids grow up to fast.
They sure are growing up fast! - Andrea
I test drove CX50 yesterday and it's not as good as everyone is saying on YT. It's really hard to steer and you have to fight with the gas and brake pedal, they're so hard to push. I've owned Mazda CX 5 and it was a dream to drive but this one seems different and harder to me. I understand that they're trying to make it more rugged and that's appreciated but inside also everything you touch is creaking because it's super cheap plastic (besides all the leather parts) and on the door, Bose speakers are so easy to push and move because they're wrapped in plastic. The screen is put too far away and when the sun hits it in the right way, you can't see anything on it. Everything else, including the small version of moonroof (Mazda's first attempt to do this), which also doesn't open all the way but only opens as just the normal sunroof ( same size which is a shame) and the motor that opens it seems rough. With all the gas prices these days, I don't know who this car is for. I was hoping to get it because I love Mazda but (CX5 and CX 30 drove better than this).
Driving it daily to work, you'll have to see a chiropractor more often.
I wonder will we get this in Europe. The cx60 was recently announced here. I like the look of this. All Mazdas look good, inside and out.
Thank you for another great review.
Guys, a very good detailed review 👍 Mazda CX 50 looks amazing!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
Hi, thanks for the videos, Im receiving my mazda cx 50 gt turbo 2024 in a week and Im from Montreal
i think it looks great!.. this was my 2nd option to the 2022 Nissan Rogue. The only reason why I didn't go with Mazda was because of the lack of dealer inventories near me.
That's awesome to know about that roof hold that can hold weight of 3 people.
Moving dead bodies has never been this convenient!
Why did they get rid of the 40-20-40 rear seat? That was a big plus on the CX5
I noticed that too. I wonder if it either has something to do with seat comfort (sitting on that little 20% section may not be that great), or saving money in design and construction (two instead of three seat back releases).
Great review. I'm thinking of waiting for the CX 70 since it will be a HEV and PHEV.
This is basically the old CX-7 that people have been longing for. I love the interior except the rear seats. It needs the 40/20/40 split so you can fit hockey sticks, skis, etc. and not force a passenger into the uncomfortable middle seat.
Can you do a cx30 and cx50 comparison
I wish Mazda Canada have the most basic trim because it's more affordable than higher trims just like in the US they have ten(10) trim options.
sadly in Australia we don't even get this model, this is a hottest Mazda SUV right now
This looks really nice! And it finally has the touch screen. Too bad they didn't add a modern transmission.
Hi. I appreciate it if you reply to my question. If you want to choose between this and Tiguan 2024, which one do you prefer? reliability wise, driving quality, etc.?
Nice review! Love that shade of leather. Right now I.m still enjoying the red leather interior of my cx5 100th anniversary By the time my lease is up there should be other new Mazda products available. The future cx70 with Rwd biased AWD and straight 6 seems more interesting than the cx50. Although I'm sure that will be more expensive than this cx50.
Thanks for this great review! I hate all those intrusive safety features... Nanny (nannies) should never interfere with my driving pleasure! lol. Instead, Mazda should have put more efforts and focus on the front turning signal lights which are too low according to me. That's a real safety issue!
I like the more squared off exterior and classy interior. I would have to take a look at this one since its cargo capacity is on par with the competition.
Excellent Review. I love the look and performance of the car. I'm eagerly waiting for the Hybrid version. Any idea by when is the Hybrid version of CX-50 expected to arrive?
We asked Mazda but they wouldn't confirm, we are thinking the end of this year or beginning of next year. - Andrea
I like it as well and it reminds me of that Volvo as well. Usually I don’t like plastic cladding too much but I think it suits it just fine.
I really do have to try out the backseat though. I’m very tall and my daughters are growing centimetres every day it seems. I want to make sure there is room for them behind my seat. I’d definitely go for the turbo.
I love wagons too, Zack. :)
Aren’t the rear doors hard plastic vs the cx5 soft touch? Also what did you think of the torsion beam?
Hit that notification bell Zack. Nice car though, looks well balanced on the road taking corners with ease! Sporty looks with a degree of mild off road capability!
I m not a fan of Mazda but they really nailed that one . When compared to the others it s clearly the most appealing .
@Hugh M. I agree with the paint issue...my Cx5 has a ton of paint chips and I do not drive in rural or harsh conditions with off roads etc.....I too wonder if the paint quality is less than adequate as I have never had this issue with previous vehicles.....but I do love my CX5 and am test driving the CX50 tomorrow!
Yes! Been waiting for this one from you two
I like the exterior of this new model. But I like the interior design/layout of the dash better....in the CX~5. This looks more plain and spartan up front. CX~5 for me.... Nice review though.
The CX5 signature seats are much more comfortable than any seats in the 50, at least in 2024.
Probably the only new Mazda I _don't_ like the interior. The exterior is stunning as always.
You guys have nailed it with this review!
Thank you so much, we appreciate the kind words - Andrea
@@Motormouth... Andrea is it you or Mazdas new products that make your husband more of a Mazda Boy now? 😉
Majority of people will purchase the non turbo version but there isn't any review on it. Most of them are for the turbo version.
Another great video!! Also what watch are you wearing Zack? Vintage Doxa?
Vintage orange Seiko 5, called the UFO.
Great review, great car. The pinging noise would drive me nuts though. Could not handle that. Strange but true.
How quiet is the inside?
This vehicle is low and then the seats are set lower in the CX-50? My neighbor has one and it sits low like a regular sedan. I love the look and the style of it, but folks are very crazy drivers where I live so it’s to my advantage to be up higher.
I don't get it, you press on "info" on the steering and then you have a digital display. It actually is fully digital !
I prefer my new 2022 CX-5 Turbo Signature but I do wish that it would have wireless Android Auto. Not a fan of the nappa leather in CX-50 with a strip dead center in the seats . I believe CX-50 is trying to appeal to the younger Subaru crowd with CX-5 up against the Audi and Lexus crowd. I would agree the panoramic moon roof panel looks great. I also prefer the no black plastic trim in fender wells gives it a more premium look.
Short seat bottoms no thigh support? Twist beam rear suspension. Hi belt-line and small windows? I’m sticking with Subaru.
Does the CX-50 have remote start on the key fob?
Mazda styling is incredible.
HOLY SMOKES!!! Yeah 9 trim levels in USA but--- drum roll-- several mid-tier trims arent available until the fall! SMH
It is Mazda’s best looking car!
In South Louisiana we need more air vents in front. Why is their only one center vent? Other than that it's wonderful vehicle. Great review. You all are the best.
Sorry guys we are spoiled here in the states. Cool vehicle but I’m looking at the bronco sport
I like the styling for the most part, I’d still prefer a digital driver side dash, so happy to see a touchscreen. I’ve also stayed away from Mazda because of their small back seats
Love the videos, but perhaps the time has come to move on from the Mazda vs "Maaazda" quip, eh?
I did a test drive today. Somewhat underwhelming. I live in the country side and I really miss the independent rear suspension from my CX 5. Will not buy.
Why don't they update cx5 entertainment system.
Looks like a WAGON to me! I love it!
Very nice car. Great review! We don't get the CX-50 in Belgium. Waiting to test the new Mazda CX-60 Plug-in. The Mazda CX-60 or the Toyota Rav4 Prime will be my choice as my new car.
As always very informative reviews! Top!
I love it !! And love the more rugged / solid looks.
Nice. I love the interior. And I love Wagons!
