- Today we have another instalment of a long-term owner's review of the 2023 Mazda CX-50. I've owned this car since the end of 2022 and although I love this it, it's not perfect. Just getting back from a proper road trip, I noticed 3 main issues, specifically on longer several hour drives. Let me know what you think in the comments below!

I am getting one. One the first test drive, I noticed a little lag when smashing the gas pedal. On the second test drive, I told the salesman about it, he said to put it in "Sport" mode. No lag. Immediate smash and go. As for the cruise control, lane departure, etc...my GMC Sierra has that and does the same thing. You can disable it all or "adapt" to it. It's all nice with safety in mind, but I learned to actually drive in the 1970s before all this technology and we had longer attention spans
Nobody cares when you were driving. If you pay for the features, you would like them to work well.
Currently own the cx 5. I've put 60k miles in 2 years. My average mpg is 26 and that includes alot of city driving. Brilliant car.
I get 28 mpg on my CX 50 in 50% city driving, but I am very light on the brakes.

@@fe9523 how so? Many cars that are discontinued sell. Especially the good ones
16 mpg is horrific. You must tend to drive rather aggressively.
2 observations: As you were discussing overtaking vehicles and others overtaking you- you were passing people on the right, which tends to annoy many motorists.
Also, briefly tapping your turn signal before lane changes doesn't adequately warn other drivers of your intentions. I could be wrong, but you may be one of those drivers you so dislike.

You can go into the settings and turn the adaptive cruise control off so that next time you use cruise control, you’ll have to use it the normal old school way
There is also "sensitivity" (distance) adjustment to make it less intrusive.
After driving mt 2024 CX-50 for a few weeks now, I find the adaptive cruise control defaults to 'on' every time you start the engine. You need to access the menu system each and every time to disable that feature.
@@photog1529 that explains why mine is back on. I haven’t needed to use it much but after I turned it off the one time I never went back to do it again.
@@edschobs5204 Would have been nice if Mazda included a dash switch to disable this feature, like they did with the iStop switch.
I just ordered a 2024 CX-50 Turbo Premium...should be in any day now. I don't plan on using the radar cruise control...staying with the tried and true...I don't want to rely on a computer to speed up or slow down the vehicle...I'd prefer to be in control as much as possible. There are some bells and whistles I don't need, and this is one of them. I can also do without i-stop, but at least that can be disabled.
it isn't about what you prefer using, it's about their features needing improvement.
I have those issues on my wife's 2019 CR-V with the Adaptive Cruise and Lane Keeping Alert (doesn't "assist," just shakes the steering wheel). After the Lane Keeping shook the steering wheel a couple of times when I got close to the center line on a deserted country road the first time I drove it, I turned it off and have never turned it back on. I just found it annoying and unnecessary. (I sometimes wonder if some of these so-called safety systems just simply promote bad driving habits.) I also turned the adaptive cruise off and usually just use the standard cruise for the very same reasons you give. The CR-V's ACC will even start to brake on a multi-lane roadway straightaway if the car to my right and ahead of me gets a little too close to the line. So I would end up hugging the line to my left so that wouldn't happen. Not sure that's a safe practice. Granted, I live in a rural area and drive over 50% rural two-lane roads, but I appreciate being able to choose to turn off these features if I want to. One other thing I do really appreciate about the CR-V (1.5T) is that we regularly average around 34 mpg on round trip road trips (several hundred miles) while driving between 60 and 75 mph. (Of course my 2014 Accord 2.4L will do at least that good, too.)
2023 CX5 owner here in Canada. Just last Sunday coming home on the highway I decided to test the radar cruise for the first time. It was misty out, first 2/3 of the 1 hour drive were fine, then out of nowhere it just shut the entire cruise control off completely saying front sensor blocked. It was quite a quick deceleration before I could get my foot back on the gas, thankfully no vehicles following closely behind or it could have been rear ended. I'm one and done using it and am not a fan of all this safety/self driving, auto braking crap.

How could it be a quick deceleration? Did it take you 30 seconds to move your foot? If the radar’s visibility is affected it won’t be reliable and is therefor dangerous. It’s a system designed to protect the driver and cause them to focus more vividly. If you get rear ended by a car for slowing down 1km/r every 5 seconds, they shouldn’t have a license.
It is a faulty system and nitpicking is an acceptable point of view fundamentally as we all differ greatly and therefor inevitably garner different perspectives of the world as a whole , it’s still an incredibly theatrical response tho lmao 😂
@@brytonmunro5270 No it didn't take me 30 secs to find the gas. It felt as if the brakes were applied when the system shut itself off and was an instant 10km/r drop as I'm staring directly at the HUD...

I have not found the safety assists to be a problem in my CX-50. I have had it all summer in SC with temps up to about 105f, not LV hot but hot and I haven't seen a hit on mileage (24.5 around town and 27 HW). I will see how it does in cold weather. You adjusted your driving in other cars, why not this one when driving where you need more smash? Use the sport mode, manual shift using the paddles or stick to get the TQ/HP you want. The 320 ft/lb of torque is great for me. My complaint? Damn Meridian Falken tires are loud on rough surfaces and the Apex roof rack adds to the wind noise.
any significant cuves on freeways i just turn off cruise because the system always thinks other people are in your lane (since the sensor just sees straight). The other annoyance is when people overtake you and they are going faster the system still breaks. very annoying. overall a fine system though >90%. Also never turn on lane keep, it's horrendous on mazda
I bought my naturally aspirated premium Plus back in July 2022. I have over 12K on it now, average miles says 20.8 because I do way too much city driving. That being said, I get on average 30 mpg on the highway. The problem is I believe this car is tuned for a 45-55 MPH highway and not 65+. Taking route 78 in NJ I averaged 26 because of the higher speed, on route 22, even with lights, I was at 31.5 when I took my time. It's also a slower road, top speed usually is 50.
Only 6 gears and limited toque on the NA motor means 70+mph won’t be that efficient

Break in period will be needed, especially for your mpgs. They will get better as time goes on
Read the owners manual on break in procedure. Basically for the first 500 miles, vary your engine RPM and don’t steady-state cruise for long periods of time.
I owned a '23 CX50 Turbo and I hated all these things you mentioned in this video! So much I got rid of the car and got a Volvo V60. Immediately noticed how bad the CX50s Cruise Control/Lane Keep was, Gas Mileage, and also felt it was pretty slow altogether. There's pros to the cx50, especially the looks...looks frkn great, but there's just some things like these that were so annoying to me.
I wonder if Mazda may not be worse than any other vehicle in regards to lane keep and ACC? In this case you wouldn’t buy any car because they would all have “deal breakers”
The Mazda cars are very good at this, in fact you can set the LKA to suit your desired level. Loose to tight. Loose will let you go over the line before ever warning you.
I mostly drive my Mazda in the city so I turn it off because if you don't it has that dumb steering resistance if you change lane without a signal. But unfortunately the LKA is garbage for when I go longer distances compared to other brands.

But I will say in case you want to pass anyone on highway please just put in sports mode and use 93 you have those issues.Because on highway there is people just love race in highway once they Read the logo on the Back of CX-50 Turbo they will try you everyday.

For the auto breaking, have you confirmed or not if there are other settings to tweak the sensitivity of the trigger? I currently have a Subaru, not a Mazda (although i used to have a miata pre tech safety stuff), and for the longest time I didn’t realize I could change the sensitivity of when the breaks engage due to distance of a car in front while on cruise control. There are three dashes that indicate how close is tolerable, pretty close, medium close, wide birth type of thing (there is no feet/km shown so i assume it’s really approximately one car length, two car length, three car lengths). Maybe there is something similar on the Mazda, I don’t know. I usually keep it at the default of three since I don’t want to ride to close to others, but to each their own. On three it does engage the breaks when non-necessary sometimes. I can see why some would be irked by that.
I agree with all the points in the video. I also experienced those problems with safety in mazdas, they keep improving them with time. (I owened 2019 cx5 GT, have 2021 cx30 natural aspirated and 2022 cx9 GT) I also learned that you can override the breaking or slowing down of the radar cruise using accelerator pedal. Manual controls always take priority. Also there are some twicking available under safety settings. Nothing is perfect in this world... I tried Toyota safety 2.0 in 2019 highlander and it was Bad comparing with Mazda cx9 at that time, lane keep was beeping too much telling everyone in the car I was doing somthind wrong where mazda just qwietly vibrated my steering wheel for me and moved it in the right direction so no one noticed, etc. Also BSM in 2019 cx5 was too agressive, but they fixed it fast in the later models becouse everyone was complaining, try to find enother car company that listens to its customers.
Yes, lane centering would be nice, it will come soon, remember mazda is a small company...
Also want to say about MPG, it's the 6-speed tranny problem. Once they upgrade to 8-speed it will be better especially on the highways. They already have it in cx90...
I agree with the first two points on the cx-50. I have the base model, The lane assist and auto braking cruise are most definitely finicky! All in all I love my SUV, for living in the far northern upper Midwest it fills the bill for everything I want or need. I don't have the MPG issues like you do, do miss not having the horsepower as you but my first two tanks of gas have gotten me 27.5 mpg. Feels adequate to me.
27.5 is great. I have the turbo premium plus and I think the best we've done so far is 23.5 mpg in mixed use city/highway.
Yeah, people are being too nice. Mazda's lane keep assist is hot garbage. Other brands have had lane centering for almost a decade now.

I had one of these as a loaner when my 3T was in and I struggled to get more than 19-21mpg just putting around. In the 3 I get 26avg with lots of city driving, 30 hwy on road trips and 24 if I'm late for work.
I hate driving road trips during the day due to the crappy road etiquette you noticed so I either gap them way before they can respond or only road trip at night. The 2.5T in the 3 is much better tuned for higher RPMs. I noticed the CX50 is in 5th at 35 and it really lacks high speed acceleration due to weight and its low torque focus.
If you are driving at 80MPH, 17 MPG isn't surprising. Drive in sport mode. Acceleration is immediate.
Always nice to watch a review from someone who took a long road trip! How were the seats? (And if you don't mind, what's your approximate height?) The reason for the nosey inquiry is that we test drove one of these (and a CX-5) and really liked it. But the seat bottom cushions seemed a bit short, but on a test drive, remained comfortable. (I'm a little over 5-11.) The fact that you have a GR 86 is of interest too, as I have a '17 BRZ with Performance Pack. I'm trying to find a suitable replacement for my '14 Forester XT, and the CX-50 is about as close as I've found so far. (The Outback XT did not impress me.) So, lane keeping. I've never had it, but test drove a SUV that had it. One of the things I noticed (think it was a Subaru) was that it DID seem to want to center me in the lane. I didn't like that when driving curves where lanes were wide enough to "fudge" placement to approach a more correct "line" though the curves. I had to fight it. It's not like I'm racing, but I try to maintain habits at regular speeds too. (Have to do something to keep driving a little interesting.) So, cornering in the dead center of the lane all the way through a curve was annoying. The auto braking due to the radar cruise is downright scary. Years ago when the technology was newer, Car and Driver had a car they were testing in Montana do a hard auto braking for a phantom object too. This was at 80+ on a wide-open Montana interstate. Fortunately, no big rigs following closely. Some aspects of modern tech aren't what they are cracked up to be. Sure, some folks will say, "just turn it off", but that's just irritating because I paid good money for it and typically don't get to choose whether to have it on my vehicle. Put the $$ into a more adjustable seat for the front passenger for me, please. Why can't the passenger get adjustable lumbar?

I have used the lane assist on one trip. and I turned it off. Traveling down a state highway a tractor trailer's trailer started to veer into my lane. I went to turn a little to give the driver a little space between us and the lane assist wanted to turn me back closer to the trailer. It was annoying.
How does it work in construction zones when you are weaving through barricades?

My 2017 Mazda 6 does the same. Brakes hard when someone cuts in front to close or on a curve.
The Mazda CX-50's Lane-keep Assist System (LAS) can be turned off using the Mazda Connect system or the i-ACTIVSENSE OFF switch. The Mazda Connect Owner's Manual has more information on how to turn off the LAS using Mazda Connect.
In short... rely on yourself, not technology. Turn your head, use your eyes, beware of your surroundings yourself.
I appreciate your videos! I just got a used 2020 CX-5 but I'm interested in the CX-50 Hybrid once it comes out. I'm in the same area as you and road trip all over the surrounding states too, see you around!
Lane keep assist and adaptive cruise control issues are not limited to just this model. I just had a 1000 mile trip in cx-90 and can confirm both of the issues are there too. Several times first feature tried to aggressively steer me into obstacle on the road or into a pedestrian.
I have NEVER had an aggressive input from the system. It will tug the wheel of course, that is what it is supposed to do.
I had the hard braking false positive when I was test driving. I thought it was quite dangerous too

The Radar cruise control is scary cause it waits till your extremely close to someone before it slows down. I’ve used it in the city with my CX 5 and it’s scary.

Thats what that styling of cruises control does. My GMC acadia denali does the same things. These are common issues with newer vehicles
I have a 22 Outback and I’m liking no CVT. I also don’t mind the infotainment. I might prefer the dial since I have a giant screen in my outback but I hate it. It crashes all the time and is very latent.
what do you think about the hybrid thats coming. I'm thinking about picking up one. I am amazed that the turbo is getting

A software update would fix the Radar issue. Had the same issue with my mazda 3. Quick fix

I'm looking at both the CX 50 and CX 5. The 5 seats have an inch or two more depth than the 50 making the 5's seats a lot more comfortable. In the 50 half of my hamstring is hanging off the seat and I'm only 5' 8". This is a big minus on the 50. However the arm rest is an issue on the 5. It's far back and you can only rest your elbow on it. In the 50, the arm rest extends all the way so you can rest your whole forearm on it. This is a big plus for the 50 and a big minus for the 5.

omg, I test drove both CX-50 and CX-5 just 2 days ago....my spouse noticed this and asked me about it. We are 5.8 and 5.4, I am honestly little surprised this isn't even a topic in the reviews I have seen so far.

Yes
A/C lowers gas mileage, although only around 10% or less, according to a bit of research I did after watching the video... I'm no mechanic, so I can't think of what else could have lowered the efficiency...

I really like the CX-50, but I do hope it gets a hybrid option in the future. Fuel economy is a problem for me, having 20 mpg and maybe lower is quite concerning.
We wanted CX-50 for my wife but the front seats are so uncomfortable that we decided against it and went with CX-5 instead. We have owned cars with hard seats before (BMW E84, VW GTI) but those in the CX-50 are on another level.

Interested too in the seats. I'm a husky guy and found the seats in the CX-5 narrow with the bolsters. Hoping the CX-50's are wider and more comfortable. Read some people complaining about the seats in both on long drives!
@@bigmo9044they are wider but a bit too flat and stiff (car had 4,000 loaner miles) and the lumbar adjustment kinda blows.
I prefer the seats in my 3, although I hated them for longer drives the first 10k miles
Test drove CX-50 today - the front seats felt like sitting on a park bench - we opted for CX-5 instead.
Well you expect technology to work perfectly. I learned to drive in a 56 Chevy Belair. No lane keep, no lane centering, no cruise control, no turbo, no rearview camera. no power steering, no power locks, no power windows. heck not even seat belts. No radio, No A/C! The dash was metal. You drove the car, you controlled the distance between you and other cars. You kept the car centered in the lane. The transmission was 3 on the tree manual. Some older cars on the road did not have turn signals. We were just glad to be mobile. Today's technology is amazing! with so many distracted drivers the car itself is trying to keep you safe. And someday soon you may get in and tell the car where to take you. For now however, you are the driver.
Were you driving into a strong wind that day? I got 13 mpg through Wyoming once in a Corolla that normally got 38-40 mpg.

Automatic emergency braking will be mandated by law in all vehicles starting 2029. It may be enough to stop me from buying anymore new cars.
My current 2022 does not auto brake but does have collision warning. It goes off all the time, particularly on curves just as you mentioned but also if I'm passing a turning where it's a little tighter. If that were paired with the car deciding to brake for me, it would be intolerable. The system isn't good enough. There's also the reality that it could be exploited, which I don't like.
I think AEB (automatic emergency breaking) which is on pretty much all new cars, is a deal breaker for me; time to start buying classic cars and fixing them up instead.
I’m considering purchasing a naturally aspirated CX-50. I do a lot of long road trip driving for work. I’m currently driving a 2010 Avenger, and need more cargo space. Driving an older car, I’ve never had either lane keeping or radar assisted cruise control. I’d probably disable both features anyway. I recently finished a 20-hour drive, from Vermont to Mississippi, and I actually enjoy being manually in control of such things. I guess it’s a matter of you can’t miss what you’ve never had. The gas mileage thing is concerning, though.

You gotta realize how much harder an engine works in extreme heat. Thats why the gas mileage went down. And you can use cruise control and turn off the adaptive radar for it so you can just use it like normal cruise control

It isn't a self driving car. Adaptive cruise and lane asist in most cars have setting to change the following distance and lane sensitivity. In any case these are not perfect in any car. If you haven't tried these in other cars I think you will find the issues you find are common to other makes also.

My mom is noticing that in my old CX 5 she’s doing more highway driving and the MPG isn’t any better than 18
My 2017 CX-5 does 25.1 mpg
My 2023 CX-5 does 27 mpg and that is at an approximate speed of 75 mph.
sometimes 'all the bells and whistles' can be way too much - I like my 2015 CX5, and hope to still stay in the CX5 family when I get a new one in a few years.
I get 40.7 mpg at 60mph on the highway with cruise control and 37.6 mpg at 70mph.
Not in a turbo. And not from calculating the MPG accurately
Disengage these so called "driver safety features" and rely upon your driving skills in the highway. Technology is good, but not always. The highway experience you described is scary 👻 😮! 👏💪🙏
It is appalling how far driving skills have fallen in this country. His mommy probably still cuts his meat for him because holding a knife in one hand and a fork in the other is too challenging or dangerous for him. After all, where is he supposed to put the seat belt?
@@rogerspalding5673 the LEADING cause of accidental death in the WORLD is car accidents. The majority of these accidents are caused by fatigue, careless and reckless driving, not buggy tech or "novice driving". New drivers that are nervous rarely get into serious accidents; drivers with ego problems do. In addition, driving tech is always improving industry wide, while the same can't be said for human drivers, as one's experience cannot be just "copied" to another. Driving tech saves lives, and continues to improve + save more lives each year. If you want to live in the 20th century, you aren't looking at statistics. Even with the accidents Tesla Autopilots caused, Autopilot was already safer than humans on a per mile per accident basis since 2019. Just imagine how much more progress will be made in the next 30, 50, 100 years if Autopilot and driverless tech is only less than 10 years old (less than the age of a teenager).
He is wrong, Use the features, I do daily with no problems. My wife doesn't even know they are there and they are active.

@@asapbud3074No it’s not. And this is proven by people in older cars who drive carelessly. Their cars don’t have driver assistance tech but they still cause accidents. Newer cars are safer in every way.

It was 110+ outside and cranking AC. Normally I get 23ish daily driving
I really can't believe that car only has self-centering below 40 mph.... When it's really useful on the highway for long trips.

You're not supposed to use the wrong fuel for your car.... Different fuels have different ignition or burn timing to ignite, putting premium for a car which requires regular 87 can be more damaging to the motor overtime. ALWAYS fill up with the fuel listed by the manufacturer.
Mazda recommends 87 octane but you can use higher if you want more power. It's on their website.
@@roadcykler62 Thank you, I stand corrected, Mazda does in fact specify this on the website. In general, you can put premium in any car which normally takes regular fuel but science have always suggested you should not do it due to the different ignition time difference between regular and premium petrol.
Why are the upper level vehicles always reviewed? Not everybody wants a turbo or the added "bling". Turbo's are such a pain in the 6 to maintain, & half of a mortgage to repair.

I would challenge this reviewer's points on a couple of notes. Reading the Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) section of the operators manual, first, the manual specifically states, "If the distance between vehicles control is disabled using [Settings] in Mazda Connect, the MRCC with Stop & Go function switches to cruise control." This is the correct way to manage MRCC in traffic, and regular cruise control suffices for most driving situations, especially open road. I have problems with the concept of letting the vehicle manage a cruise control function anyway. It follows the logic of self-driving vehicles that run into other vehicles. Secondly, he reviewer is blaming the vehicle for his own his driver behavior in dealing with other traffic in close proximity, such as a crowded freeway. He reinforces this perception by bragging about his foxiness in dealing with other "jerks" who he's trying to out gun or maneuver around. Therefore, the educational value in this video is gone. Me? Waiting for 2024/5 hybrid version.

Yes, you can turn off the radar for adaptive cruise and just use like old school cruise. Problem fixed

I really don't want a car with all the driving "assistants," including the computer screen. About the only modern tech I like in a car is the backup camera and a generic hybrid system. The rest of it is ridiculous price inflation. I don't use a radio. I'm even fine with manual window cranks. I wish they'd pull the sh!t out of these cars and drop the price by 10k or whatever.

Yes! The fuel efficiency is trash on this car. I have one and the 30 MPG highway is 100% false advertising. I am still a bit mad about it.
Thanks for the report. I get 27-28 mpg on highway constantly. Something may be wrong with yours.

I have to agree and go farther. The lane keep assist is garbage. Other brands have had lane centering for almost a decade. The radar cruise is really unrefined and in reality would be better if it just went back to the simple old school Toyota "cruise control stick" on the right side of the steering wheel.

I don't want to stay in sport mode driving on the highway. Shift logic more aggressive and maintains a lower gear at any speed. Kills fuel economy

Honestly the Mazda is a good car, it was between a CX50 turbo and a rav 4 prime for my wife. The prime was only 2k more and we only use the gas motor when we drive more than 50 miles in a day. Although I will say the range can be 30 or below miles if it's really cold out.

I have a question: What exactly are you relying on Lane Keep Assist to do? Just shut it off. And yes, the Radar Cruise overworks the brakes. To the point that I hate it in my 2018 Mazda6. Be that as it may, Mazda is amazing and it's not Mazda's fault that American drivers are morons.
Watching crash videos I'd say many drivers all over are subpar. At least in America the vehicles have to pass inspection of some sort and aren't ready to fall apart as they go by.

Mazda doesn’t have the same idiotic philosophy of their autos being self driving. They are drivers autos as such their Variable cruise controls give subtle clues if your crossing over lanes rather then jerking the wheel out of your hands. This calibration is what sets Mazda apart from all of the mindless electronics jamming up every automobile on the planets for the sake of novelty, rather than actual safety margins. Most of them overly react to outside road perturbations. If you consider everyone on the road behind the wheel are watching every other cars positioning and driving styles . And if you consider being in line at a grocery store and someone takes cuts w/ out asking you first, it becomes very frustrating. The same phenomena happens on the road way, often I find if I need to get over I’ll make eye contact w/ driver and give them a thumbs up and a smile. 9 out of 10 drivers will nod for me to move in front of them. The key is not slowing other drivers down by slick cut off maneuvering techniques. It’s when you’re sneaky about it and brazenly aggressive towards others that will often cause them to speed up. Driving is like skiing, subtle smooth moves creates a very fluid experience while moving forward. Considering we are all “ Bozo’s on this Bus” leave room for all of us Bozo’s to move and groove 😎 w/ minimal drama. It’s a Win~Win.
Get rid of the stock air filter in your engine replace with and oil based filter also remove the charcoal filter in your engine air filter box car will have more power using 91/93 octane. For better gas mileage get a 3/8 drill bit for metal. Put a 3/8 hole in the exhaust pipe where it's connected to the muffler. It will sound better and more powerful. That small hole in the exhaust makes a whole lot of differens. It releases some back pressure on the engine. In about a week of driving your mpg will be way up. Don't be scared nothing is going to break. 👍

Anyone who is willing to sacrifice 25 bhp in exchange for saving a few pennies on gasoline doesn't deserve such a fine automobile. If you don't want to use all 256 ponies, then you should be driving the non-turbo version. This vehicle and turbocharged engine are intended for driving enthusiasts. If you don't know what driving enthusiasm is, and have no appreciation for the performance the turbo brings, then you should be driving a Chevy Trax or other pos which is suited to you. The car is not the problem. You are.
