Happy Monday guys! How do you feel about the future of the CX-5? Seems silly to us for Mazda to offer both the CX-5 and CX-50. We've always loved this model, but the new CX-50 is better looking, offers more space and better tech, and more features. We also expect the hybrid version of the CX-50 to show up later this year.

He may say it's the worst infotainment but that's pretty subjective. Just his opinion. I personally don't mind it not being a touch screen and instead using the very high quality wheel. It's much safer and a choice mazda has made. They're not "behind" that's a ridiculous take. They've said they don't like touch screens while the vehicle is moving, so it's a choice.

I agree. I’ve heard the reason they are hesitant to go to a touchscreen is because they feel it’s more distracting. I can confirm this to be true. Especially in cars with terribly unresponsive touchscreens. If I take my eyes off the road for even three seconds to try and activate the shitty screen I’m already drifting out of my lane. The dial switch may not be most contemporary but way more driver friendly.

I compared the CX-5 Turbo to the Audi 3, BMW x1, and the Lexus Rx/nx all of which are 10k more for the equivalent (based on my pricing in Canada). I agree with many of your points, especially the seating that needs to be addressed. I believe the CX-70 will address many of these issues, one of which is leg space in the back. However, the CX-5 Turbo is, in my opinion, the best bang for buck when it comes to interior fit and finish and overall driving dynamics.

The CX-5 is great value. You can't find a vehicle with as many features for the price, especially when comared to luxury brands. It's also the last of its generation so it's super reliable and buttoned down, you can't say that about the CX-50 right now. Also, many car reviewers have been commenting about how uncomfortable the CX-50 seats are. The CX-5 is still made in Japan and has an independent rear suspension unlike the CX-50. "It only has a 6-speed transmission" but it's a skyactive 6-speed and that's special. It may not get as good fuel economy as some of it's competitors, but it's not far off and it's still good fuel economy for this class of vehicle. It also earned the highest safety rating of all vehicles in it's class (out of 20 small SUV's) tested by the IIHS and was the only one to pass the new side impact test.
Its infotainment is solid. That dial is something you see in luxury brands too. Not having a touch screen means no fingerprints, it's easier to use and safer while driving. The CX-5 drives better than it's competitors, most of which have CVT's. Personally, I'd gladly trade the better driving dynamics you'd find in the CX-5 than slightly more space (back seat & cargo area) that you'd find in other Compact SUV's, but by all accounts this is a great vehicle for small families too. Also, I'm not a fan of digital displays until they get better so the (mostly) analog gauges in the CX-5 are perfect IMO.
It's a handsome vehicle whose looks will stand the test of time. The new CX-50 looks like the outgoing Rav4 which is not very original (sorry Mazda). I would never ever buy the first iteration of a new vehicle because they still have kinks that need working out. I think the CX-5 being smaller than the CX-50 and some of it's competitors is a benefit too. It'll be easier to maneuver and park in busy parking lots or at home where space is at a premium. It's Mazda's best-seller for a reason. This car is a dying breed. The last of a great generation of Compact SUV's. I have nothing against the CX-50 (or other small SUV's) but since it was so heavily compared ... It may be newer than the outgoing CX-5, but it definitely isn't better.

I have a ‘22 CX-5 Signature and I think it’s a great car. I actually like the rotary knob for the infotainment system, rather than having a touchscreen with all of the fingerprint smudges. I will admit that while the Nappa leather seats are fine, I do get some fatigue while driving the CX-5 for an extended period of time. It’s not bad, though. I pretty much love everything else about the car. The turbo gives it plenty of power, the Bose audio system is great to my ears, and having all the bells and whistles with the top trim is icing on the cake.
I will say, though, that I believe Mazda will faze the CX-5 out within the next few years. It just doesn’t fit with the direction they’re heading as a company. The CX-70 will basically be the CX-5’s luxury SUV successor, and the CX-50 will appeal to those who want a more rugged, off-roading vehicle. Even though the CX-5 is Mazda’s best seller, I don’t see it as being part of their long term plans anymore.

Concerning the drivetrain, one person's "dated" is anothers "tried, true and reliable". Yes Mazda's Skyactiv 2.5l mated to a 6 speed conventional auto has its roots all the way back in 2014, but instead of trying to stay on the cutting edge Mazda has simply improved and refined that formula..and added an optional turbo that provides enough torque for even their largest 3 row SUV. I love the fact you can get the same Engine the CX-9 uses in the much smaller, lighter Mazda 3. In fact I voted with my own money and now proudly own a 2021 turbo hatch😎 Sure the Civic may be the better overall car (subjective) and the Toyota Corolla gets much better gas mileage...but neither have the unique look and feel of the Mazda 3. To me it answers the question of "what if you mated Italian design studio style with Japanese build quality and reliability?" I think the current Mazda 3 (both hatch and sedan) answer that question in the best way possible. Of course I was able to secure my car back during the pandemic when people were afraid to go outside much less car shop..and right before car prices went totally insane. I got a great deal for a great little car that I won't be looking to replace anytime soon. Is it perfect? No, but such a beast doesn't exist in the car world, but the Mazda 3 turbo in hatchback form is close enough for my needs.
Oh, and if I needed a crossover it would be a CX-5 or CX-50. Mazda just suits my sense of style better than anything produced by the other Japanese/Korean/American/Euro makers.

  • @Cletus_the_Elder

I think the design language of the CX-90 is an indication of the direction Mazda is taking. The CX-50 went too butch, and it didn't have any upgrades in the engine or powertrain over the CX-5. I wish the CX-5 would evolve faster into the CX-90 design language. I think it's a good balance of the squarish lines without the unnecessary butch posturing. The naturally aspirated 4-cyclinder engine is fast enough for most drivers in traffic, and saves you a lot of money. That 4-cylinder does not strain, when you're going up an incline at highway speeds and when you need to pass. What is odd is that Mazda changes the leather upholstery every year. 2021 had the best leather in my opinion, among not just the past models but even the more recent models. Also, you might not need the Signature trim. Mazda, to its immense credit, has add-on factory packages that are an excellent addition to whatever lower model you are getting.

Other than that just oil and air filter. Super reliable car that I've used to tow, haul over 1000lbs and drive cross country. I've been in super sketchy situations on trails alongside Toyota Tacomas. I've ripped off plastic in numerous places scraping rocks, but fortunately all that stuff is inexpensive and easy to replace yourself. I don't know why Mazda went with the turbo engine. My 2.5L naturally aspirated engine has a compression ratio of 13.0 and feels great driving. On my current tank I'm getting 33.3 MPG, mostly highway. If I were replacing my Mazda today I'd get the RAV4 Hybrid.

Both of our CX-5's have been very reliable and well made. My 2019 Signature easily competes will others costing over $10,000 more.

This refresh has hoped this age like fine wine. Both the pre-refresh & post-refresh models look great. I was actually considering getting a used 2019-2020 Grand Touring Reserve or Signature along with the 2021 onwards Signature trim

If you don't buy a car every year you wont even know what is dated and what isn't because all of them are overwhelming at this point!. So I think that is an issue only testers would worry about. For everyone else coming from a 5 to 10 year old trade in, it is a huge upgrade. Mazda is taking a page from BMW keeping a successful design around and refining it. It keeps costs down for them and for us, resale value up. Rant over. We looked at a 2019 grand touring reserve with 50k miles. I think it was faster and handled better than the new 2023 signature that we ended up with but we had to have the parking sensors or we would have destroyed that 2019. . . . and it was only 5k less with a way higher interest rate, only made sense to go new. plus I know a thing or two about car dynamics to improve handling if i need to do that. (I already priced out the Bilstein's and they are cheap for this car.)

Although I am a big fan of Mazda, I test drove this and a Subaru Outback and found that even though the CX-5, on paper, had larger dimensions for the second row, the Outback felt roomier. I went for the Outback for that reason. I already have a Mazda 3, so if I want something fun to drive, I can just use that one.

The Outback has a longer trunk, but not as tall. It has a more practical trunk space, IMO.

The infotainment system is great. Too much complaining about it.

I wish the Caturra Brown Nappa leather seats were a lighter shade of brown or it has that Terracotta Brown leather that the CX-50 offers, or even that new peanut butter/ saddle tan brown from the new CX-90. This Catura Brown is so dark it blends in with the black elements of the interior
