    Wow I'm so happy this series is back! I absolutely love your historically accurate makeup tutorials! So fun and interesting to see why people did certain things with makeup, you just learn so much more than you would from a regular "just do it like this" tutorial. Keep 'em coming! Mom was a teen in the 50's and she loved her red nail polish :D , even funnier , she switched to a natural colour in the 60's and 70 's but my Granny (almost 65 back then didn't give it up ! ) Mom didn't use a lot of makeup as she was allergic to most of it , but she used eyelash curlers and she and granny adored the Max Factor brand and Yardley which used to make MU back then

    Love this video, these are my favorite, MAX FACTOR!!!!! Loved it, 2000 was my fave mascara. Was sad that they stop selling it in the USA. My grandmother, who is in her nineties, always dresses to perfection. She never leaves the house without "putting her face on." She hoarded "pancake" makeup, or heavy foundation, when it began to be phased out. She now uses Tarte, which is the thickest consistency I could find for her. Although, it's nothing like cake makeup. To find anything remotely similar she would have to purchase stage makeup, and even that isn't to her liking.😊

      Has she tried Max Factor Panstick? That was a very popular heavy foundation that my late grandmother used as a young woman (who would be in her nineties now too) and Max Factor still make it in the same packaging as in the 50s, so it may be a nostalgic thing for her!

    I watch ALOT of vintage tuts but I LOVE this one because, it shows girls (and boys that aren't into the subculture) that the 50s was a very elegant, classy, sultry decade, in the fashion department too. I do my vintage make up every day. I live (currently, hopefully moving to a large city soon) in a small backwards town in the middle of no where with too much snow. But I still manage to find time to look elegant and glamorous even in my parka. I often get weird or dirty looks but sometimes I'll get great compliments and I often get elderly women and men come to me and say stuff like "I looked like you before I married my husband in the 40s!" "I haven't seen young ladies where clothes like that in decades" "Where did you get those backseam stockings, I haven't seen those since my younger days of getting all dolled up for my date!" I *love* those compliments. It makes my day :) I might have a biased opinion on that time period because my Mom was born in 1953 and my Dad in 1939 and grew up listening to stories of the good old days and listening to their music, watching old films with my Mom. My Dad had the biggest Playboy collection I had ever seen (Until a year or so before he died, my Mom liked PB but Hustler was a completely different thing. There was one on top and she threw it all out. I remember watching the girls in it and just saying "One day I want to look like that" I was so young, haha. Anyways, he had every issue from Marilyn Monroe first issues, to the most current from that day. So, now my mission is to collect all the ones I don't have in honor of my Dad and also because I love Playboy. He loved Marilyn, so thats where my fascination with her started and it *never* went away. #rantSorry #RIPjohnLegros

      P.S: I know this is a Mac tutorial, but I just have to say as a pinup-y vintage-gal that Beseme makes GREAT lipsticks in rose and red. I especially like #redhotred #carmine #merlot and they look beautifull. In "gold" casing with red vinery. Is that a word? Haha Oh, and the compacts are great too. Especially if you're pale, they case is small and cute so that you can reapply in public. Something that was popular in this time period. It was seen as sexy. Same with causiously checking your garter strap

      I just had to say that I also experience these dirty/weird looks when I go out dressed nicely in a small town. I never understood that mentality. I simply cant understand why people get so offended or angry by someone dressing nicely as long as what I'm wearing isn't extremely skimpy or revealing. It's honestly a puzzle. Do they think that we are showing off by dressing nicely?? Is it jealously. I just don't know.

      Lucy Lorelei Argh you sound awesome, keep on rocking your vintage style and collecting Playboys. I'm dying to get my hands on some Besame lipsticks, they look lovely. I very regularly dress vintage too, it's just so much fun and I adore feeling classy and a bit unique.

    • @LucyPinupdoll
      @LucyPinupdoll 9 лет назад +12

      Thank you, Miss G! :)
      You keep doing vintage you! :)
      I love dressing vintage too, I get the occasional "where are you going? Why are you dressed like a movie star etc" but I get alot of compliments too. Especially from elders. Like this one lady said "I havnt seen stockings like those since I was a young lady. Where did you get them?" So that outdoes the rude comments or looks. Plus I like not looking like everyone else. Especially in a small city like this, every one just shops at the mall and that stuff gets expensive, and everyone looks the same. I shop online, repro shops, authentic vintage shops online and in my city. Thats what I love about vintage clothes, you can pay 40bucks for a dress, have it fitted and with the right accessories. You look like you spent a ton. Also, I love to look like my style icons and idols. Then theres the hair, so much prettier than straight hair I see.
      PS: Does anyone know why my spell check isnt working? Its telling me every single word is wrong.

    One of the ads you show is for "Cherries in the Snow" lipstick and nail polish, both of which are in drugstores today - I just bought both at Walgreens a few months ago. I love the tutorial but the main reason I watch this series of videos is because of all the makeup history knowledge you bring. I find it so interesting to learn that they liked a full lip and a mask like effect in foundation. Really interesting facts for any makeup addict. I really like how you research the information and deliver it to us with images and examples. I would love to see the 90s/early 2000s à la Britney and Christina. ;) I can't wait to see Ancient Égypt. And also, little bit of trivia I learnt during my british history class at college: in the Victorian era, men recognized prostitutes easily because they were the only ones who plucked and made up their eyebrows and who wore lipstick. ;)

    • @Zabrena
      @Zabrena  10 лет назад +12

      CorailAuxJoues Thank you so much for the appreciation! :) We definitely need to do a Britney/Christina look! Yes, the Victorian era was so unique because normal societal women actually had to hide their makeup purchases; they didn't want any makeup they wore to be noticeable, it was kept very minimal so as not to be associated with prostitutes and actresses (who wore heavy makeup), which were not looked upon favorably at the time! Funny, huh? :) xoxo!

    THINK PINK! THINK PINK - Stanley Donen's FUNNY FACE I loved this! And since in the 1950's I used to sit and watch my Mom put on her makeup I can tell you that you got it Absolutely.Right! She used to say when I told her it was like magic."I am turning the witch into the princess" and it IS magic! I just so loved this.
    Now about Pancake. It was invented in the 1930's by Max Factor for the Movies. And when I was an actor we used to still wear it on stage.It really smelled wonderful and you applied it with a sponge and water. The thicker eyebrows became popular because Elizabeth Taylor refused to have her brows plucked thin as was the style at the end of the 40's when she became a teenage star....And they look Gorgeous on YOU!
    Anyway on to the 1950's hair... Zabrina you made my day...OH I almost forgot. YOU look as beautiful as Audrey, Grace, Elizabeth, Lucy, and Marilyn. xo

      Lanier Smith Your mom is too funny! HA! Ah! You taught me something new! I didn't know Pancake was used in the movies, makes sense though given it coming from Max Factor. And I didn't know that about Elizabeth! Good for her for being true to her glamorous self ... can you imagine her with thinner brows? Not a good look! Thank you for the compliments! Those are some enormously gorgeous women to be compared to! :) xoxoxo!

    Great ! So fun! Had to laugh when I saw the Revlon(Finally.) "Cherries in the Snow". It was my first real lipstick. We were not allowed to wear makeup at school but AFTER school...out came the lipstick !! (Once we were on the bus,of course.) Finally either my Jr. or Sr. year, we were allowed to wear lipstick ! But only that. Oh, and if you looked like a "tramp", you had to take some of it off. "Tangee" natural, was all I was allowed to have and no I keep a tube of it in my drawer for a quick bit of color or because I just want that pink color. Back then it was probably $.50 nd now it's like $16.00 with shipping. Babysitting gave some much-needed money when I was older (15) to buy the coveted Revlon "Cherries...") When I started college (16), I had some rouge ,It wasn't called blush. What a hoot it has been remembering all this stuff. By the time we were married I used eyeshadow ,also. (21) after all it was the 60's !!! Can't wait to see more of these !!

I remember when I first started wearing makeup my Mom telling me about ladies who wore pancake makeup so heavily that when they'd wrinkle their nose their makeup would crack. She also told me about a girl in her gym class getting hit on the side of the face with a volley ball and for weeks the ball had the girl's portrait on it because her makeup was so heavy it transferred to the ball.

    Love this look! I remember my Mom when I was very little, and she was not a heavy makeup person but naturally pretty...she used Pond’s Cold Cream, a mild soap like Cashmere Bouquet to cleanse her face. I remember her main makeup at that time was Coty’s loose powder in a peachy shade, no concealer, cake mascara, brow pencil with arched brows, and little “rouge”, but had various shades of red, plums, orange -red shades of 💄 lipstick, and never left the house without it-she had beautiful teeth and smile, and it truly made her look so pretty. Later on she discovered Estée Lauder facial oil, that she would wear at night, and used less soap for cleansing! Great tutorial and love this on you, perfect! ☺️💕💄‼️

    I've enjoyed your period time videos. I've always love women who wear makeup well. Growing up in the 50s and 60s, I saw many ladies who had, what I would call a tailor look about themselves. What I guess I'm really saying is, I miss the glamor of that era. For both sexes! Even the bad guy in movies and TV worn a coat and tie. One thing about the nails back then. They were like pointed daggers. Not squared off like todays trend. Thanks again!

    In the 30s, 40s, 50s, and early 60s, a "woman of Experience" was the target demographic. Fifteen year olds looked like kids, but a woman in the 25-45 range? SHE was a femme fatale. Twiggy put an end to that. I'd love to see that return.

    I used Max Factor Pancake makeup until they stopped selling in the US. It is the ONLY foundation that I could wear that would keep my oil shine at bay for at least 8 hours and that is without having to use a face primer. If Max Factor came back to the US I'd go right back to it. :(

    I really would like to comment. I have used your tutorials for about a year now. I've been doing art photography and making old accurate photographs, so THIS is exactly the research I need. I have done 20's and 50's so far. I LOVE LOVE LOVE your videos. Just looking at your make up at the beginning, I can't tell much about what is done. It's so subtle and not costumey. Then when I watch the tutorial, I UNDERSTAND and appreciate how much work is done into making it so accurate.
    I can not express enough how much these mean to me. You are brilliant and wonderful. ♥
