Although it's very difficult to get all the exact details as her make-up artist never betrayed her secrets, it's fun to talk about the tricks and details of Marilyn's make-up. Marilyn had lots of different looks and was pretty natural most of the time (especially in her everyday life) but this video concentrates on the very glamorous look she had for her movie poster shoots from 1953 through to the end of the 50s. Lots of the tricks were geared towards the lighting, film and camera lenses of the time. I'm creating an 'illustrative' version inspired by her most glamourous and made up look. Its just a bit of fun, hope you enjoy it! x

if lisa ever do my makeup, i would cry while removing it.
+Digmer I feel you
But the makeup would get washed away by your tears :p
😂😂😂😂😂
What I love about Marilyn's makeup is that it was very customized. I believe everyone should study their face and see what's best for them and what actually improves their look. The heavy contour and the brow shape that's currently popular doesn't work on everyone, especially if it's not done well. Study your proportions, your symmetry and use make-up in a way that it's not a mask but a real life beautifier for your face
Very well said !
Thank you.but how ?
I think your last sentence pretty much sums it up
@@nilsonlopez1850 I recommend discovering your Kibbe body type. an eye opener to me :)
This type of customized make up, colour coordination and outfits was a big part of Classic Hollywood Star System. That's what created this very recognisable faces.
This is probably the best makeup tutorial on youtube! It's like a documentary, I so admire the amount of research that went into this video! Incredible, thank you Lisa
It’s so hard to believe this wonderful video is over 9 years old. It looks as fresh as if it were uploaded yesterday whilst every other video of that age was apparently filmed with a potato. Lisa hasn’t aged a day either and the gorgeous make up and fascinating research she does still carries on to the present day fortunately for us!
Agree I felt its like today done
that shadow under the eye trick is genius!
Damn she did a lot of research on this.. I'm impressed
“Moisture = youth” words to live by
They don't do makeup like this anymore
So rare we have a celebrity obtain their own iconic look that dominates an entire decade
The look of the Kardashians literally is dominating pop culture right now. I'm not a fan of it but that's just the facts
I mean the whole "Kardashian" look has defined the 2010s I would argue. And that's a very iconic and unique look, for better or for worse.
Amy Winehouse definitely had her own makeup look that dominated the 2000s
@@cheyenne6913 it's not iconic or unique by any means. Also so overdone.
This is simply not an accurate statement. You may not think this is true 'in comparison to...' but you can't compare everything to everything else. An era comes to be defined by something by default whether we like it, or not. That is just how it is.
This was the most educational, detailed tutorial. It's great to know not only what products Marilyn used, but also WHY she used them.
she never listed any of the products
Kulwhip K she used Maxfaktor lipsticker! not MAC-i read it
This is hardly a tutorial... It is an epic, beautiful, passion-filled video. It is apparent how enthused you are by beauty. I appreciate this video so much.
MASTERPIECE
Before a date I did my makeup following this video and he was so entranced by my makeup. I’ve never had a man notice my makeup AND compliment it...let’s just say it worked. Marilyn knew what she was doing!
Lol... ;)
Marylin was really ahead of her time she did many things that we now do and have as makeup trends like the minimal makeup and focusing more on skin hydration as well as wearing half eye lashes which now we do for the foxy eye look this video is truly amazing and gave many insights on what she did. 💜
Her makeup artist was ahead of his time
I'm not gonna lie, I might give that "false eyelash shadow" trick a try one day. Genius!
I thought exactly the same!
I have tried it, and when done well it looks so beautiful 😍
And, did you?
Add the eyeliner pencils you used ? And the brands ! Lip color and brand too
It’s great, I always do it^^
its 2016 but im still watching this, this is not a tutorial this Art and History of marilyn
Agreed. Art at it's most beautiful. Well done, Lisa!
amen
Purely art
Didn't realize how old this video was until ur comment wow...
2024! :)
Can we just acknowledge and applaud this woman's extreme in depth understanding of the whole Marilyn Monroe look!.. I watched this like 3x because she was so informative! 👏👏👏👏👏👏
the lashes were maybe a bit too big but the rest was amazing
She never wore such big lashes, and she didn't highly curl them. It was all about a sleepy look.
That lash shadow trick is absolute genius!!
Lisa Wang Ikr?!!
It reminds me of ballerina makeup, especially Swan Lake 😍
Anybody else find her voice relaxing lol ?😂
I think the fake lashes are way too long, everything else is beautiful.
this is not just an ordinary tutorial video this is full of precious and good informations! thank you so much for such intelligent video xxxxx
I loved the last comment that people don't just wake up looking like Marilyn Monroe because people don't realize how much passion and pain people go through to look the way that they do.
I remember seeing Marilyn surrounded by the press and you could see, she was going through a terrible time. She turned her face to the wall, so the photographers couldnt take pictures............She still looked absolutely beautiful, hardly any make-up on and her hair was back from her face, as if she had just ran her fingers through it. A totally natural beauty. There will never ever be anyone, in the film industry, as beautiful as Marilyn Monroe
When she says that Marilyn Monroe was a 'naturally pretty' girl, that is the understatement of the century. She had the most perfect face.
There are plenty of videos about the strict beauty standards of actresses at the time. She had to undergo numerous surgeries, painful hair electrolysis and she bleached her skin and hair for a fair look. Men do not understand "natural beauty" and underestimate the amount of work women put into their appearance😶👀
@@kannot1 I mean the post is by a woman so if you’re taking a dig at them you’re a bit off.
I wish we knew her makeup secrets. I think it’s very sweet whitey kept her secrets but he also didn’t share his gift to the rest of the women in the world. At the end no one can replace Marilyn x
i’m speechless. how talented can someone be at makeup to be able to achieve this look so perfectly?? also you can tell the amount of research she put into this and how passionate she is.
This hands down has got to be the best Marilyn Monroe makeup tutorial on youtube! So detailed, interesting and beautiful! You should link up with miss butterfly daisy and do a 50's bombshell look on her. You would have her looking like Monroe resurrected girl!
Definitely agree!!
i never would have guessed her makeup had that much complexity! I had always assumed she just wore simple pencil liner, falsies, and a red lip
Right !!!!!
I never realized how much the glam look of the 60s was inspired by Marilyn
50s, not 60s
@@headphonic8 it's both
This was 9 years ago already!?!? Omg I remember when this video premiered! Wow!
I love this, you actually go into depth about her make up whereas all any other youtuber does is just slap on some eyeliner and red lipstick and say it's a Marilyn Monroe make up tutorial!
Came to this video with a thought of "oh, a makeup tutorial!" and ended up with makeup history of Marilyn Monroe, interesting facts on beauty world, and, well, makeup tutorial.
I want to imagine how a couple of years after this video, Lisa actually published a book on history of make-up and beauty industry -- and how proud she would be. It shows throughout the video how she meticulously explained and told stories on Marilyn Monroe and the beauty industry on the 1950s. Thank you, Lisa, for your work and passion in beauty industry.
And she did! :)))
the model is so perfectly beautiful
Marilyn was so beautiful and inventive
Wow! That trick to make the eyelash shadow is genius. Looking at old photos I always thought that was a real shadow haha!
I wish I could just sit in the chair and get my makeup done just like this... love the look
Thank you Lisa for this education. I used it on a client and they loved it. It’s so funny, how she was concerned with a youthful look. She was youthful, she died at 36.
This is the kind of Marilyn content we need.
I'm so jelly of the model Lisa is using. Her skin is flawless even before Lisa applied the fundation.
Her skin is beautiful
Wow she puts nowaday celebrities to shame with all those beauty tricks!
I hate those tutorials makeup from nowadays with those ridiculous people who think they are influences. THIS IS A MAKEUP TUTORIAL VIDEO what it really should be a serious video with content and no drama. This is actually the first time I give my time to watch it. So it means it’s a serious one. Thank you for this great video.
I agree this was an excellent tutorial She was a bombshell!
"Always be yourself"- Marilyn Monroe
As a Marilyn Monroe researcher I must say you did your research very well.
Om my goodness you're like a makeup historian. I love that you're not just goin " then she applied foundation......". You just got yourself another subscriber
I feel sad she died so young
Same. She had a very hard life and a lot of problems. Poor thing just wanted to feel safe and be loved..
Up close examination in the preparation of her face for film and stage lights, it almost resembles Kabuki makeup. Artistic to be sure but almost empirical science as well. All to create the luminescence that was the MM look.
Could you please do this same video for Audrey Hepburn?
When I see celebrities in the media, I don't automatically think of the time and effort most take to make themselves look so good. This gives me a whole new appreciation for the "process" one goes through to be who the public expects them to be.
O lord, it's a whole routine. Some times taking days to get perfect.
Marilyn‘s make up was wonderful. I have to say, even in pictures of her coming out at the hospital with her hair all messed up in tears, she still looked pretty amazing
When the makeup and hair was done and the model smiled, she did look a lot like Marilyn! She's so pretty 😍 Love Marilyn and love this video!!
Lisa Eldridge is a true makeup artist, for me, the best that has ever existed. She not only aplies everything neatly and perfect, but she really understands how to use it in your favor not like most "makeup artists" that only cake makeup on their faces saying SLAAAAYYYYY and doing shitty things that only make you look like a different person, they just try to make you look like the same thing! But Lisa doesnt, she brings out the beauty in a person, make them look real good and as themselves at the same time. Love you Lisa, hope I can be as good as you one day.
as soon as she put on the red lipstick, all of the makeup tied together and she looked like Marilyn!
That makeup is gorgeous! Especially those eyes!
This is hands down the BEST tutorial on Marilyn Monroe's makeup and the history behind it, EVER! Lisa you are incredible and i have been watching your videos for a couple years! Your skill and love for this art we adore clearly shows! You inspire me as a makeup artist to create and fall in love with your work! Thank you xx
Excellent documentary info, as well as artistry, technique + insights...just think the demi-lashes were waaay too long.
Marilyn would use longer ones for evening or famous dance routines -- but they weren't THAT long.
Had they been just a wee bit shorter, Lisa would have nailed it! Still the BEST I've ever seen
Please make a priscilla presley makeup tutorial 💖🌺
Yaaaas
Yes gawd!
Esp.. That hair what she had.. even tho its not really Makeup anymore :D
Yes!!!!
I'd love that also!
I wonder if marilyn's lip gloss secret was to add vaseline to the mix?
Exactly what I was just thinking since she used it will over her face for a dewy look!
Marilyn layered her lip colour. Also a makeup artist that knows a lot about Marilyn Monroes makeup.
Here, I always thought her make up was so simple.
Allan "Whitey" Snyder was Marilyn Monroe's makeup artist throughout her career: from her first screen test at Twentieth Century Fox in 1946 to her funeral makeup in 1962. The pair developed a very close working relationship. Towards the end of her life, Monroe asked Snyder to prepare her face if she were to die before him. This was a promise that he fulfilled. Snyder died on April 16, 1994, in Hansville, Washington. He was survived by his wife, costumer Marjorie Plecher, who had also worked as the wardrobe director on several of Marilyn Monroe's films. Whitey was not only a friend, but he also pretty much created the iconic Marilyn Monroe look.
Before someone says again that she's 'wearing too much' this regime was for the movie cameras
This woman knows what she's taking about 😍😍
I can't believe I see this video again. I remember watching it 10 years ago when I got obsessed with Marilyn. And here we go again
Vivien Leigh would be an ideal candidate for you to do.
So much like Marilyn at 10:50. The best Marilyn Monroe makeup tutorial I've seen, and I've watched many of them haha. My only criticism would be that the eyelashes are a little bit too long. But apart from that, this is perfect.
I can't get over how accurate this look is!
I always come back to this video. It’s so relaxing!
I tried this look, and I've never felt more comfortable in a makeup look than this one.
It's so pretty. Also I tried it again without the red lipstick and it still looked gorgeous
I've been on a binge for the past couple of days of make up tutorials and it never fails me to see how amazing woman are in terms of self maintenance and dressing themselves up. Like the level of care and attention to details that goes into a woman's "best" look is outstanding and no wonder (some) guys are in awe if us lool
This video just helped me clarify this. Rather than Marilyn just accidentally popping on a deeper red on her lip to give her that iconic look, she and Whitey actually worked at it and did things in order to bring out the best thing that suited her. It's just so.. wow. I love make up but it's soo bittersweet
The makeup is perfect and the model is beautiful, but Marilyn had a quality about her that nothing can recreate. You just can't stop looking at her. There's no one like her.
I like Lisa's videos. I always learn something new.
Lisa's voice is comforting, even better than ASMR.
Tbh, Marilyn could only pull off her iconic look
As a huge Marilyn fan I want to thank you for doing your research and creating this absolute beautiful masterpiece. It's like Marilyn came alive with makeup.
Very pretty and accurate, but the lashes are too long.
The ultimate diva
I watched this video when I was 15 and here I am at 26 still inspired and even more inspired because I will be going to school to become a MUA! I appreciate you so much for making this video!
Does anyone else find her voice soothing??
yes so much
right i watch her videos while doing homework lol thats how soothing it is to me
omg me and my sister do the whole nivea/vaseline mix. literally had no idea marliyn did it! i have oily skin, and my sister has combination skin. As someone with oily skin, if you don't want a greasy look just use less vaseline. I always glow and have dewy skin when i do this mix! Also helps my makeup literally glide on.
Do you get break outs from it, though? I have oily skin, and would love to try the vaseline/nivea combo, but am afraid the vaseline may clog pores...?
monkeytine nope, i never get breakouts! Probably because I exfoliate everyday and always cleanse my skin in the morning. If your skin is clean (and I mean deeply clean, not just on the surface like face wash does) then this shouldn't clog your pores at all
vaseline is a petroleum based product and doesn't moisturize rather seals the existing moisture including clogging up pores.
Lid T yeah so I use it on a damp face. plus the vaseline is mixed with nivea :) and i do this in the morning so my face is clean!
Lid T vaseline doesn't clog pores, it's classified as non-comedogenic. It is in fact used as a base for most topical skin-medications, so no, it is most definitely not bad for your skin in any way.
The eyelash shadow and highlight effect is honestly one of the most amazing tricks that I've learned about but will likely never use in my own life. It's just... the illusion of it is genuinely beautiful.
I can’t believe this video is 10 years old!! Wow. Such great history!
When will you documentary be shared in the USA?
i love this! there's a gazilion of tutorials on this but none gives so much detail and authetity as this one. However i do think the lashes are a bit too long and unnatural.
this is art
I could listen to you describe makeup looks for hours. It is so soothing!!!
The model is incredibly beautiful.
The beauty mark was fake?
I have a faceshape very close to Marilyn's but have always been terrible knowing what makeup style would fit me.
Definitely gonna try this tutorial sometime for something fancy, would be fun if I manage to pull it off!
My face shape is also very similar to Mairlyn's. I leaned how to do "the look" from this video and Besame Cosmetics and adjusted it to my own tastes. Well worth the effort
Omg this video is so old I’m impressed
Yours is THE BEST Marilyn Monroe makeup tutorial of all!
The model has GORGEOUS skin!
I watch this video over and over again, always when I need relaxation and to get my mind off things :) The best video there is about Marilyn's makeup, lovely xx
Hi, I do the same. Have a lovely day!
WENDY ROMERO That's so nice :) Lovely day to you too!
:)
That lower lash shadow tip is GOLDEN.
This was so in depth and informative.
I’ve seen this video so many times but I still come back and watch it monthly.
What I love about this video is that, while it reveals all of the secrets of her makeup, the model wearing the look is proving a very important point; That makeup will only get you so far. The appeal of Marilyn's look only worked so well because it combined with her charismatic acting and her soft personality. If you ain't got that, it's just makeup. Beautiful makeup, but definitely just makeup.
Not trying to take anything away from Whitey here but I have read many, many books on this gorgeous woman and she often did her own makeup, particularly for photo sessions and in her last movie, never finished. The two did indeed collaborate as she knew every millimeter of her face and she understood key lighting - they worked to achieve it whether the director/s chose to use it or not. Also she had a special something. Her friends Jeanne Crane & Paula Strasberg reported being with her, at different times, when no one would recognize her. One time with Jeanne Marilyn did it for fun, to show off, Jeanne was a pinup girl and actress but with Paula Marilyn did this thing on purpose. When Paula asked why no one was recognizing her she said 'Oh I'm just Norma Jean now, want me to be Marilyn?' She walked out of a department store fitting room and did The Thing : She turned on the inner light and transformed herself into the Star she was...and they were mobbed by people wanting autographs and calling her name and nearly fainting with joy. Incandescent is what they say about her and it's so true! ~~ Would love if you could also do Dietrich and please, please, Diana Ross!! Thank you for this amazing series Lisa!!
ALL HAIL LISA ELDRIGE.
I think from the images that the lashes were thicker (but they don't come like that now) and the eyeshadow under her eyes was slightly lighter, but you are spot on. Your look is closer to the 70's, but it's impossible to be 100% without the products they had. You've done such a good job!
I LOVE the lighting in this video!! So much easier to see how things actually looks and what each step does to the face, compared to your newer videos where the light is faaaar too bright! But this I love! You’re a makeup genius, so all I want is to really see what you’re doing😍
It's amazing how her makeup artist back then knew and used a lot of the tricks we use today. Highlighting/contouring, white on the lipstick (Is that to make it look like there's more shape, or for some other reason? I'd be grateful if someone could let me know :-)) etc. I bet up close her lipstick looked caked on. Even in the black and white photographs you could see her skin looked oily from the Vaseline. But she was a beautiful woman! I love not just the tutorial but the facts she gives :-).
Oh those lashes are way too long! Thanks for sharing this tutorial!
i love lisa she’s so nice and literally never forgets to mention alternative products for woc and different skin types when shes doing tutorials on herself! her love of the history of makeup and the history of women (as she always says) is inspiring!
You must have done lots of research! Well done! You did Marilyn justice!
Can you do Elizabeth Taylor? You have the best and the most accurate tutorials :)
This is the best Marilyn Monroe makeup video I've ever seen! You are so talented!
11 years later and I still can’t get over the mascara. Simply amazing
I don't leave comments very often but I need you to know I come back to this video at least every few months, even after all these years. It's just so beautiful and interesting. It's like watching a beautiful documentary. Thank you so much Lisa!!!
