Good video! I'm here in korea and waiting to get this one (or their next model) after the 3080ti comes out. Hoping I can get it at a good price here. I had 34" 144hz monitor and loved it, but the vertical height of the 38" just seems like the sweet spot. What's your thoughts on that? 34" vs 38"

Also you can not have both, only one. - Also I would like to see LG UltraGear Control Center opening minimized in TaskBar not Open on Desktop every windows start. You can help yourself and use "Actual Window Minimizer", add LG UltraGear Control Center and make it run minimized into Tray. Summary: LG did a bad job not implementing passive cooling on Gsync module. Fan Noise. Amazing Sphere Lightning experience. It's a joy to use, colors close to an OLED TV.
I'm tempted to get this monitor, or should i wait for the newer revision LG 38GN950G-B? I think the newer can overclock with displayport to only 160hz, but it has updated HDR 600 vs 400 on the 38GL950G-B. Also i believe the newer revision monitor will be a few hundred dollars cheaper too.
I think if the GN version is anything like the GL, you won’t be disappointed. 160hz vs 175hz and HDR 600 vs 400 is a wash. Grab the GL if you want GSync or wait if GSync compatible is good enough for you.
@@SuprUsrStan It has G-Sync and Freesync compatibility. I'm planning to upgrade from an Acer X34 Predator. I can't go back to 16:9 monitor even if it's 4K. I am seeing X35 Predator for $100 more than the 38GL950G-B on Amazon.
I recently purchased and will be returning this monitor. Manufacture date 04/2020 so I don't think there's a 'new' fan that is inaudible or just a hum. The fan noise is a loud hissing sound.
If you have an audible hissing sound, then that’s not normal. Mine is really quiet. The “new” fan was relative to the fans found in old G-Sync modules a couple years ago.
Great video man! I love my 38. I'm like you, the HDR on this monitor looks just too fake so I leave it off for the majority of the time. I'm also running a 1080ti. What's your desk layout btw? Ikea Karlby?
Hey Stan are you also looking at the Samsung G9? I was actually looking to upgrade to the LG38GL950G now that the G9 is supposed to release on July 13th, I might as well go for the Samsung it has all the bells and whistles as the LG but it has refresh rate up to 240hz, HDR 1000, 1000R instead of the 1800R curvature, G-Sync and Freesync compatible. Plus it's priced at $1699. I'm glad I waited and still am still looking for that new upgrade for my X34 Predator.
thanks for the review! how long have you been using it? does the fan make a noise? EDIT 21/07/2020 - bought this a few months back and it's quiet no noise. amazing monitor.
I have this monitor, no fan noise that I can hear. Upgraded from X34 so the experience for me is pretty much "meh"...hdr is pretty much a gimmick -not a dealbraker on this model.
Bummer. It really is kind of stupid that there isn’t any more visibility on this DisplayPort update. A ton of people are still on 700, 900 and 1000 series GPUs.
Came across this video by happenstance and was wondering what you meant by this being the only monitors to support g-sync and freesync. I think they’ve been doing this on most gaming monitors for about 2 years now
would you recommend this monitor for gaming or waiting on price drop or new upcoming monitor? i'm useing a ASUS ROG Swift PG278Q at the mo and looking for a bigger monitor
Hi, Im currently looking into three 38 inch ultrawide monitors : Lg38gl950g lg38gn950 and acer predator x38. Seems like the specs of these three monitors are so closed. And im so confused about It, Like which monitor is the best??? Thanks a lot.
Yes, I too am looking at those very same panels. LG 38GL950G - $1,799.99, LG 38GN950 - $1,599.99, and the Predator X38 expected to come out at $2,400. I was also looking at the LG 34GN850 for $999.99, the little brother of the 38" panels but I feel I'd regret not getting the bigger future-proof panel.
That Samsung Ultra curved 49" just too big for my desk real estate... And, next size down is 32".... I wanted it in a 34"/35".... sheesh... Waiting for a FULL, real review of these new Samsungs. Lots of flash w/ the ultra curved look, but I prefer substance.... I have a nVidia 2080ti and an Intel 9900k CPU on an Asus Hero XI MB. To this point I'm very much leaning to the LG's....
Just wanted to ask if there’s something that can make the computer work without linking it to a PC ? I mean as in a computer cabinet, if there’s one strong enough for it please :)
Thanks for the review! I got because of your honest opinion and I like everything on this monitor. I have able to change the setting on the display option in the envidia control but when I play Warzone I not getting more than 40 FPS and I notice you were getting at least 100. Can you help me with the settings?
Looks much smaller than the Samsung 49. By the way I skipped a little and didn't see any mention of the fans. A lot of people complained that the cooling fans on this were too loud.
Hi, I just wondering what monitor arm did you pick up for the screen? I've had mine for a while now and have been looking for a arm that is able to support it.
I picked up the AmazonBasics Premium Single Monitor Stand amzn.to/2YYG4DZ It's Amazon's rebrand of the ErgoTron monitor arm. That arm easily supported the weight of this monitor. I highly recommend it!
Do you have to do anything special to make games that don't support the odd resolution fit the screen fully? How about watching youtube and such? Is there a way to force filling the screen or do you have to just deal with black bars all around?
You will have black bars on the left and right when you full screen. The good thing is that at full screen it’s still larger picture than a 27” monitor. Probably closer to something like a 29”
Was going to get this but the resolution for a 48 inch is horrendous so much so you can see the pixels on the desktop. Your screen needs to be 3860x1800 minimum.
Hey man, does your monitor have a noticeable noise from the fans? Ive just got mine and there is a very noticible and irritating noise coming from it. There is also a video on RUclips showing it. Please let me know if this is only on defective units or is on all of them
This was helpful. im looking at getting the new LG 38gn950b or the Samsung odyssey 49 G9 what you think i do have the space for ether , ill be gaming and online stuff. etc have a 2080ti.
How far back you set from the monitor comfortable . And how my inches is the monitors depth by default with the stand, like if you place it against the wall . For us people with limited desk space . Thanks
I have the monitor about 22 inches from the front of the table. The monitor is about 4 inches thick if you take account of the curve. The stand adds another 5.5 inch to the thickness. You can have the monitor a good 4-6 inches closer and be fine IMO. If you're using one of those IKEA countertops that's about 25 inches deep, one option is to wall mount it or mount it on an arm so that you can push it all the way back to the edge of the table. Hope that helps!
Worth is subjective. As with all things, if you’re looking for the best of the best, expect to pay a premium. There isn’t any other monitor on the market that does what this does except for the unreleased X38 which is expected to launch at a even higher $2400, so you tell me.
The 38GN950 is running about $1600 in the US, and has HDR 600 over the HDR 400 of the 38GL950. I believe it also runs less wattage overall. However, I think it may only run 160hz rather than 175, but I don’t think the 175 is usable anyways.
The density is to be the same as a 27” 1440p monitor. If you want something like a MacBook Pro, you need a 4K 27” screen. One of the downsides of going large is you lose the pixel density because these monitors just don’t have that high of a resolution at the large sizes.
SuprUsr Stan Thanks for the reply. Yea, I realized this later after writing the comment. I found a website dpi.lv that calculates ppi of different monitors. However, I do not have a 27’’ 1440p monitor so I am not sure whether I can see the pixels sitting 30cms away from the screen. Can you please help me in answering one question? Can you see the pixels sitting 30cms (1 foot) away from the ultrawide monitor?
3840x1600 @ 38 inch has a pixel per inch of 109.47 while 2560x1440 @27 inch has a PPI of 108.79 so they’re really comparable. My old 32” 4K monitor on the other hand had a PPI of 137.6 so it’s a notice drop in quality but still acceptable.
@@SuprUsrStan Super Thanks ! i want to buy this monitor really bad, even the Oddisay G9 for the same price cant take the cake of perfect IPS, how about IPS Glow ?
I'm once again looking for a new monitor and nothing out there is ticking all the boxes. The Acer X27 and Asus PG27uq have ruined me. They make non fald monitors look like garbage. But they have input lag and low pixel response that now makes them feel dated, but no one has yet released any newer FALD displays. So currently, I'm drawn to the 38GN950 or the 27gn950. I prefer the size and specs of the former, but the larger number of zones (in a smaller space) might give the latter a somewhat more passable HDR experience. Why can't LG just hurry up and make a FALD nano-ips display? (or samsung with their second gen VAs?)
You're going to be waiting for a long time before you get proper HDR on these gaming monitors. FALD is good and even if you have hundreds of zones, it'll still bloom, IMO. I have HDR and local dimming completely disabled because it's just too distracting. Only Mini LED or OLED will get you a flawless HDR experience. Again, IMO.
Maybe also worth considering that a 3440x1440p 34" UW has the same ppi as a 38" 3840x1600p UW, so if you have a weaker card like a 1080ti it would make more sense to keep the smaller resolution with it being easier to drive, and if need-be you can use super-sampling (on your GPU sw) to squeeze more visual fidelity out of the image. Also I tend to find that most of the time with a larger display you have no choice but to push it back away from you,(minimize head/eye movement) and a smaller screen can be brought forward. Additionally I would recommend at least a 2080 to drive this monitor/res. Great monitor nonetheless have fun!
Away from You? I am sitting with my face glued to the screen (alittle bit exaggerated but still :P) when playing First-Person Shooters, so I definately need a bigger screen then 27" :)
I really value my vertical height. The 49” is just two 27” while the 38” is closer to the height of a 30”. If you really want a strong curve and game a lot more than productivity then the 49” can be a strong contender. Also if your games support the super ultra wide, then that could be an option too. RTS and MOBAS? Probably not so much. 2¢.
SuprUsr Stan I use exactly for both, games a lot and productivity a lot. Iike coding, big spreadsheets with lots of columns, copy and paste through windows, etc. I hear excellent opinion about the CRG9 for productivity like a life changer on saving time, don’t you feel that way? And also excellent opinion about gaming, even RTS. Like Citi builders, They are billions, jurrasicc park evolution, etc. Because users says that you see a lot of map, without move the mouse side by side.
@@sebak2003 Again, the reason why I got rid of my double and triple monitor setup and went with a single 32" 4K monitor for the longest time was because i wanted vertical space for spreadsheets and productivity. I've settled for a 38" ultrawide because it's a compromise between the 32" and 27" for vertical space. If you don't mind the dimensions of two 27" monitors, go for the G9. Most RTS games don't do well with ultrawides. They'll either have long black bars on the sides so you effectively get a 27" display, or they're super stretched and you have no additional vertical space, also not good. Personal preference really but I strongly lean towards the 38".
Had the 34" until a day ago but unfortunately I got possessed by an evil demon who decided to punch my whole fucking fist through the monitor. I'm now sold on the 38" instead! Hopefull no demon possessions in the near future!
No! When I was playing Warzone on my ultrawide LG ultra gear .. it was just the best. So smooth and no warp effects whatsoever. You just get more view from the sides. Unfortunately, my monitor stopped working.
Forgot to add that, what I was playing on, was a 34” which is 21:9 ratio. This screen ratio is great (29”, 34”, 38” monitors). There are monitors that are much wider at 32:9 such as a 49” monitor which will make the imagine distorted in games “most of the time”.
Personally size and resolution is a lot more useful than the increase in FPS. Also, depends on what you think is more important and the games you play.
Wait for FULL, detailed reviews of the new ultra curved Samsungs on TFTMonitors site... The LG's will be tough to beat... don't let the 'flash' of the ultra curved Samsung cover up it's potential inferior specs & performance, if any...
I can't speak about the price difference but specs wise, I think it would come down to HDR600 vs G-Sycn Module. The 38WN95C is a "G-Sync Compatible" monitor so no actual g-sync module onboard. It would come down to how important either of the two features are for you and how long you want to wait.
@@SuprUsrStan Elaborating on that, I suppose its right to say Gsync is probably the more important feature for a gaming monitor cause I guess we dont watch HDR intensive content on it? Or is the Gsync overhyped/negligible?
@@megaprimegamer1184 Right now HDR games are few. Going forward that will change as more games will take advantage of HDR. I've always been of the opinion that if I'm paying at $1,000usd or more on a monitor it damn well better have everything. Gsynch and full HDR 1000. But that's just me and what I expect. But to the question of whether gsynch or HDR and could only have one? Gsynch. Again that's just me.
Skott62 ya fair enough. If I’m getting a monitor like this it’s for gaming. So Gsync should be priority. But seeing we already have few $1000 monitors with 1440p/ips/gsync/144hz, for such a steep increase in price hdr alone doesn’t cut it. But then again, if it’s closer to 1200 or so I’d see it fair.
0:43 There was the Acer XR382CQK (LG 38UC99) but it was a 75Hz w/FS panel and I hated the panel so much I sold it within a week. But this one looks pretty darn good, I'm still sitting on a 4 year old PG348Q (was out before X34) but don't know if I should wait for the 'gamer' X38 or just go with the LG...could last me until 5120x2160@120Hz lol
I have a feeling I’m probably going to pick up the X38 once it comes out and replace this with that. The FPS counter on the LG goes away on reset or deep sleep while the Acer is always persistent. Small detail but I loved the hardware FPS meter on the predators.
@@SuprUsrStan It's gonna be ~$2.4K but I'm sure feature/quality wise it's not gonna disappoint AND have speakers! I used to use FRAPS but yeah a permanent native counter with G-sync is nice to have, along with AB of course. I really wanna know if the X38 will ship with *1:1 pixel mapping* ? Not enough monitors do.
@@SuprUsrStan During your usage/review of the 38GL950G did you notice if it has 1:1 pixel mapping? I find it really handy for plugging in old consoles and running sub 1080p resolutions naively. Thanks

Monitor doesn't offer different colour settings for SDR and HDR like TV does when HDR, DolbyVision and SDR have their independent color setting adjustments.
- Volume Control (on Joystick) but there are no speakers. Left and Right activate Volume control but those shortcuts should be use for switching On/Off Crosshair and FPS counter
- Lazy Menu. There are Gamer Profiles but you can not Edit, Save and Overwrite existing profiles with Crosshair or FPS counter included like Predator x34 does. You always have to go deep inside Menu and do it. Also you can not have both, only one.
- Also I would like to see LG UltraGear Control Center opening minimized in TaskBar not Open on Desktop every windows start. You can help yourself and use "Actual Window Minimizer", add LG UltraGear Control Center and make it run minimized into Tray.
Summary:
LG did a bad job not implementing passive cooling on Gsync module. Fan Noise. Amazing Sphere Lightning experience. It's a joy to use, colors close to an OLED TV.
Massive price gouging atm with covid. I settled on something else but would real have loved to be able to afford to at least test one of these.
My 7 Noctua case fans produce more sound than that... doesn't bother me at all, especially when I game & use my Sennheiser PC360 headset.
The best monitor in the world in 2019 and more expensive too.
A few days now. The fan is silent, it’s good.
I have this monitor, no fan noise that I can hear. Upgraded from X34 so the experience for me is pretty much "meh"...hdr is pretty much a gimmick -not a dealbraker on this model.
I recently purchased and will be returning this monitor. Manufacture date 04/2020. The fan noise is a loud hissing sound.
What's it like for movies? Does the curved screen feel weird for watching them?
Best review.. i had to return mine because i thought the black screen during post was a defect damn, buying it again this week.
Wtf...
Bummer. It really is kind of stupid that there isn’t any more visibility on this DisplayPort update. A ton of people are still on 700, 900 and 1000 series GPUs.
SuprUsr Stan true i really had no idea about this update... 1080 Ti Sli user ✋🏻
Came across this video by happenstance and was wondering what you meant by this being the only monitors to support g-sync and freesync. I think they’ve been doing this on most gaming monitors for about 2 years now
Very useful thanks, thinking of ordering one.
would you recommend this monitor for gaming or waiting on price drop or new upcoming monitor? i'm useing a ASUS ROG Swift PG278Q at the mo and looking for a bigger monitor
how do you connect your MacBook Pro to this monitor?
Thunderbolt to display port cable
Just to reiterate- 34” Ultrawides will probably have you wanting MORE VERTICAL SCREEN SPACE. Choose carefully!
What are your thoughts on the Samsung G9 Super ultra wide 49" that's coming out in a couple of months??
Is there a specific Macbook configuration for this MacBook? What graphics card is needed for this monitor on a MacBook?
Thanks for the review! I got because of your honest opinion and I like everything on this monitor. I have able to change the setting on the display option in the envidia control but when I play Warzone I not getting more than 40 FPS and I notice you were getting at least 100. Can you help me with the settings?
What's your pc specs?
Looks much smaller than the Samsung 49. By the way I skipped a little and didn't see any mention of the fans. A lot of people complained that the cooling fans on this were too loud.
Hi, I just wondering what monitor arm did you pick up for the screen? I've had mine for a while now and have been looking for a arm that is able to support it.
I picked up the AmazonBasics Premium Single Monitor Stand amzn.to/2YYG4DZ
It's Amazon's rebrand of the ErgoTron monitor arm.
Probably closer to something like a 29”
Great video. I don't like HDR either so i picked this one up!
Does this monitor come with sound or do you need to hook it up to some external speakers?
so are these monitors better than the monster 49 inchers that are out now? or is 49" not that good for gaming?
Thank you so much for the review :D
Thought about this monitor, but I wanted better HDR. I ended up with the lg cx 48 inches. I have for about a month and I really like it.
Was going to get this but the resolution for a 48 inch is horrendous so much so you can see the pixels on the desktop. Your screen needs to be 3860x1800 minimum.
Is it possible to lower the resolution and still use the 160hz mode? in some games i want to maximise the fps, at the cost of resolution
Just got one under a 1000 dollars, I consider myself really lucky!
Hey man, does your monitor have a noticeable noise from the fans? Ive just got mine and there is a very noticible and irritating noise coming from it. There is also a video on RUclips showing it. Please let me know if this is only on defective units or is on all of them
Mine was quiet and silent. I have heard other people complain about it though, but not everyone.
is this monitor also good for photography?
Thanks for the review
38 seems like the sweet spot for the future of gaming 34 inch not wide enough
I wonder LG 38GL950G-B is it same monitor or new version?
It's the same monitor.
SuprUsr Stan what’s the model that is using that same panel you said was coming out later?
Hey, I was wondering if when you are reading texts, do the words look like they're rainbows sometime for you?
Hey Stan. Great review. Curious as to what model speakers you using? Your gear list doesn't say. Thanks!
This was helpful. im looking at getting the new LG 38gn950b or the Samsung odyssey 49 G9 what you think i do have the space for ether , ill be gaming and online stuff. etc have a 2080ti.
49" is for productivity/coding and sim racing
@@inezabeats8766 Would love a 34 or 38 with 240hz though :(
I have heard for best performance need to run this monitor on 144 hz, is that correct?
@@SuprUsrStan thanks
@@SuprUsrStan samsung odyssey g9 coming out soon
Very informative thanks
34GN850 $999 vs 38GL950G $1799. worth it for the double price?
Worth is subjective. As with all things, if you’re looking for the best of the best, expect to pay a premium. There isn’t any other monitor on the market that does what this does except for the unreleased X38 which is expected to launch at a even higher $2400, so you tell me.
The 38GN950 is running about $1600 in the US, and has HDR 600 over the HDR 400 of the 38GL950. I believe it also runs less wattage overall. However, I think it may only run 160hz rather than 175, but I don’t think the 175 is usable anyways.
It's a beast of a monitor, but I have a issue where it drops down to 85 hz, and the reds get blurry.
what wall mount do you use for the lg ultragear 38 ich 38gl950g
What kind of desk is that mate ?
Is the clarity of this monitor like the retina screen on the Macbook Pro? Asking just to get an idea of whether the pixel density is enough.
Hello i like your review, everybody who reviews this monitor dont compare the pixel desity to an standarf 27" how the image clarity is for an big 38"?
3840x1600 @ 38 inch has a pixel per inch of 109.47 while 2560x1440 @27 inch has a PPI of 108.79 so they’re really comparable. My old 32” 4K monitor on the other hand had a PPI of 137.6 so it’s a notice drop in quality but still acceptable.
@@SuprUsrStan Super Thanks ! i want to buy this monitor really bad, even the Oddisay G9 for the same price cant take the cake of perfect IPS, how about IPS Glow ?
How would a amd card work on this?
what are your thoughts on the soon to release Samsung Odyssey G9 it should be dropping next month.
Too wide and too squished. Both gaming and productivity may suffer from the lack of vertical area.
Hmm 34 inch or pay double for 38inch is the question
there are 2 fans in this monitor and I can hear them Both. second I can hear in the bottom. The one on top is quite noisy. You just need to accept it.
Tnx I read that in other comments from people own it...2k for loud monitor - NO THANKS
I recently purchased and will be returning this monitor. Manufacture date 04/2020. The fan noise is a loud hissing sound.
Again, IMO.
@@SuprUsrStan i find it great on the pg27uq. Don’t really mind the bloom. I just want the same kind of fald array on one of these newer panels.
This one or the CRG9 49 monitor ? Which one do you choose and why? Best!
@@SuprUsrStan Thanks Stan, tough decision, but you definitely have a good point, too.
SuprUsr Stan and for more better inmersion (VR style), the 49 it’s not more incredible experience than the lg 38 on the games?
How tall is the screen in inches? Thanks!
What mouse are you using?
Can you watch netflix fullscreen on this monitor ?
Is this an HDR monitor
hi thank you so much about yours video,i have a question sir -LG UltraGear 34GN850 realiy support G-sync like this monitor?...
Yes. The GN version of this monitor is g-sync compatible. Supports VRR between 44-144hz.
Compatible- thats the Minimum of Nvidia
Had the 34" until a day ago but unfortunately I got possessed by an evil demon who decided to punch my whole fucking fist through the monitor. I'm now sold on the 38" instead! Hopefull no demon possessions in the near future!
you fuck, you made me so nervous with that knife! But I love the video
Do images look warped in an ultra wide? If I play Warzone and walk up to a wall, will this wall’s image be distorted? Hope this makes sense.
Bro nice one keep it up😁😁😁😁
The timing of this review is very close to Amazon’s recent restock of this monitor. Does that explain the timing behind this?
Im thinking about buying this monitor right now or the new samsung G9 which is 240hz and 1440 though
@@brianboucher4248 I mean yeah your right, I like the LG ,this is the one ive wanted to get, but yeah I hear You. Ordered It.
Wait for LG 38WN95C??? (Better HDR, Cheaper?)
Is anyone else having issues getting audio to work? Just the monitor itself
